Why You Don't Hear Much From Matthew Lillard Anymore

- Matthew Lillard rose to fame in films like Hackers, Scream, and SLC Punk!, but we haven’t been hearing from him as much in recent years. To horror fans, his best-known role will always be the over-the-top Stu in the first Scream film, and a certain generation of filmgoers will always think of him as Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, but the roles that helped boost his career also typecast him. He’s continued to work as a character actor in film and TV, and he’s grown interested in directing as well. Let's take a look at why we don’t hear much from Matthew Lillard anymore.

Nah, it's because his body was destroyed while he was trying to go to 5% of Shaggy's power
You beat me to it
The burden of trying to posses
just .00001 percent of shaggys power was far too much for his mortal body and so he perished for his foolishness
XD
Lol
Damn bro you said it first
YOU DONT TALK SHIT ABOUT SCOOBY DOO LIVE ACTION CUZ THAT MOVIE WAS THE SHIT
Kush Keith legit bro.....gotta love Scooby-Doo
Kush Keith TOOOOOO TRUE
Lmao that's right!
I loved that movie when I was a kid.
+Mack Whitaker
I think every melanial did. We all watched old episodes of Scooby Do on cartoon network(back when cartoon network was good) and then they finally did a live action and couldn't have picked a better cast. Ahhh the early 2000's....
Because he’s traversed to another universe to spread 0.9% of his power
You suggest his power is finite? Ha.
He does not need to go to another universe. He is a multiversal being
@@benitocoronado1948 nobody said 100% is the limit
Woah 0.9% that’s the most serious he’s ever gotten..
It's 1.2% now, he's evolved
I hear that he hasn't done much in film since the last Scooby movie because the spirit of Shaggy still lives inside him and will not allow his body to act in anything other than Scooby Doo movies. When Lillard even attempts to do any acting outside of the Scooby universe Shaggy's Spirit possesses him and casts him into a David Lynch production.
@Beanie Sandals a much simpler and easier way to say that would’ve been “He got type cast as Shaggy” 😉
@@nsasupporter7557 its not really funny the way you put it but ok
@@Beanie-Sandals like I’m staying as shaggy and dying as shaggy man!
So if he's still voicing acting, doesn't that mean we do in fact, hear from Matthew Lillard?

Kevin Pham, thanks. I try to remain anonymous online at least until I get my TH-cam channel up and running then I'll get into character; I'll have videos explaining why I chose this name and what the character means to me
I wont accept another shaggy. Its like hugh jackman and wolverine
Ace Knight I'm the same way with RDJ and iron man
Shaggy's a drugged out 1960s hippie from the time when Scooby was first done (just so y'all won't come yammering at me at when the series originated, yes, I knowm, late 60s).
Accurate af.

He is living as embodiment of shaggy now, watching and protecting us from beyond the multiverse

Because he’s busy mastering the Ultra Instinct.
FRISHR he already did. Right now he training to go beyond that.

I don't care what anyone says. I really enjoy Matthew Lillard
Good...you and three others apparently.
houchi69 failed actor who is jealous
agreed. he has energy that you can't find in other actors. fun to watch, even in bad movies.
I adore Matthew Lillard too. I enjoyed him more than I did watching Freddie Prinze Jr.
slc punk is a perfect film.
Matt literally plays his roles too well so people have trouble seeing him in other roles
Colin White he got lucky, twice. beyond those he's entirely forgettable
+JamesThePierce Those were the only 2 actually popular ones lol
Plenty of people didn't like the Scooby Doo movies but one thing everyone agrees on is that man is the real life incarnation of Shaggy Rogers lol the other actors weren't bad but could've been replaced.
Colin White exactly. He's still shaggy to me in every movie I see.
Matthew Lillard was always a good actor. He is better known as Shaggy now, but I've already liked his roles, even if the movie he was in tanked. And to be fair, I actually liked Without A Paddle.
I only knew him as Stu from Scream ;~;

I loveeee without a paddle 🥺🥺🥺❤️
Without a Paddle and Thirteen Ghosts are my two favorite movies he's in. Without a Paddle is one of my go to movies when I need a laugh.
No he had to retire,he killed the cast of Scooby Doo and had to conceal his power. He had to make machines to help conceal his power but now he's back and ready to take on the world only using 0.02% if his power to rebirth the universe
I think Lillard was AWESOME as shaggy, NO ONE COULD have done it better!!!! BRAVO!!!!👍👍👋👋💞💞
Dan Bailey hell yeah
Dan Bailey well Mitch Hedberg would have been better if he were alive much much better
I loved Mitch Hedberg, but sorry I think your way wrong!!!
i agree, Lillard IS Shaggy!
IKR???? I thought casting was PERFECT.
I grew up with the Scooby Doo movies. I loved him as Shaggy. That's what I know him for. I loved the Scooby movies.
I don;t care for them now and he's rined in part because o'that. An animation historian (NOT ME lol!)who'll stay anonymous
said on one of the animation themed newsgroups in the salad days of usenet in 2002 on that film:
"The movie should never have been made in the first place. It is a very sad commentary on our culture when crap like SD can be so internationally successful. It is even more sad that SD has become H-B's main legacy when they should be remembered for such great characters as Huck Hound and Yogi Bear."
SlapMyFinns YASS SCOOBY FANN ME TOO
I've never even heard of Huck Hound.
One of the few actors that were so good it actually hurt them. That scream movie was the single greatest horror movie ever. His acting set it on the map
It’s a masterpiece yeah
If someone from 2 years ago saw the present comment section they wouldn't understand what's going on
I have no clue
Help
Been a year and I still do, it's not funny already though.
1 year later and I still don't know what's going on
@@nickgreenhow5513 Why not?
So are we gonna pretend 13 ghosts never happened.. or even Serial Mom
exactly he killed it.
I mean I actually liked him in that movie and I loved that movie in general.
Why? you didn't like 13 ghosts? also I didn't know he was in Serial Mom.
Martin Guzman oh no I loved those movies, I'm just surprised they didn't mention them because they were good films with him in them. But yeah he played the son in Serial Mom
13 ghost was beyond epic
SLC Punk is such a masterpiece, I'll forever love this guy. He's so great. He deserves way better.
Totally agree
I wish they had mentioned SLC Punk!

"My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at meeeee" is the best line from the entire Scream franchise.
It's fecking hilarious.
Welcome back Mr. Afton.
I was born in 96 so the scooby doo movies were good and I can't really imagine a better shaggy

He was the perfect Shaggy. Voice, charisma, mannerism, and all.

His Shaggy was perfection.
I'm around the same age and can't agree more. That dude rocked as Shaggy, nobody could have done better.
I was born in '03 and I still think he was awesome as Shaggy. I saw the thumbnail and was like, "Holy crap look, it's Raggy!". Lol 😎

I came to see why we don't see him anymore, not a fucking history of all his movies
real talk, Adeel
AND they left out slc punk, i fucking loved that movie and he really killed his role as steve o
Piper Cook - That movie is actually mentioned. Pay attention next time.
Pipier Cook they talk about real quick
youngwarriorpoopoocaca I'll your two guys' word for it
He belongs in a Marvel Movie as a minor villain.
Dan Williams - A thousand times yes except I think he could go bigger than just a minor role. His style of humor complements the series nicely, I could see him holding his own beside Deadpool, Spider-Man, Ant Man, etc BUT I really would love to see him as a lead. Deadpool acts in many ways like a "spunky sidekick" who accidentally got the lead role, but he does it Marvelously (pun intended.) I'm sure he could pull that off in a similar way but distinct enough that folks don't try to point fingers saying it's just a B-movie rehash of Deadpool. He's got a dynamic that reminds me of Jim Carey's "Mask" and it is perfect for the MCU. I haven't a clue which character I would cast him as but I'm ready to go write a letter to Marvel begging them to give him a role. After sticking around for so long being very much under-appreciated, this man deserves a gleaming comeback opportunity.
Dan Williams I think he would make be a good riddler
Kevinthewiseone holy shit , i totally agree
Dan Williams absolutely man good shout
Adam X... Summers or whatever. X-treme. He actually has the face for it, with the goatee and such.
Or... OR, Arcade. Yea, Arcade could be cool. Or Jamie "Multiple Man" Maddrox. Playing pranks on everyone.
It's because he's busy defeating Saitama while using 10% of his power. *WHILE IN ANOTHER DIMENSION*
Pssh he only needs .1% to defeat that loser
Ordin Ary we all know shaggy would destroy the universe at near 10% of his power
Simple, he became typecast; an actor's worst nightmare.
He played in scream then scooby doo sounds like a varied career to me
Karl M Except he never had that status, he is just widely known for 1 or 2 roles (like Hayden christensen)
Come on guys without a paddle was a classic such a great and funny movie

Andros the warrior High Alpha you're right he's the 2nd best Shaggy ever both for live action and voice. He's only second to Casey Kasem
nicky anne nasution yeah good point..
CrazyComicGuy 64 yeah your right..
Yup,
No one else can ever play shaggy better than He.
It was like He was born for this role :D
Shaggy is using 1% of his power while shooting his films
It's because due to his connection to Shaggy, he was able to abandon his physical body and proceed to a whole new level of reality beyond our comprehension.
His shaggy was perfect even to the point where he was cast as the voice actor for one of the modern cartoon adaptions
*all of the adaptations. He is shaggy in basically every role post-Casey Kasem.
Anime Battles HQ one he does a lot of the movies now and tv shows for Scooby-Doo! As Shaggy
Joseph DiSalvo yep
He's the official voice of Shaggy after Casey Kasem was too ill to continue.
I dont know, I love Matthew Lillard, started with Hackers and still goes on today. He's quirky, strange, and comedic, that's really what got me and my friends enjoying what he does.

watch them again, it's sad.
Ezra Hutzler I rewatched monsters unleashed a year ago
i still like it
I just rewatched the first one with my son and I still liked it.
I just rewatched both for Nostalgia a week ago and still loved them both. Absolutely everything about them is great. The first movie is a fun island with a twist, while the second one has a dark theme about it but is just as great for some reason.
I just watched them last week, still enjoyed it
without a paddle is one of my favorite movies. 16% wow.
chandler1289 Same, I was thinking the same thing. It has a good story and good jokes. I can't see why it got bad reviews?
My wife and I love that movie
Love that movie
It is one reason when I hear someone speak about rotten tomatoes I think they are idiots who don't know who to judge a movie for themselves. Rotten tomatoes has a REALLY weird movie review system and has shown to be very biased as well "They gave the newest ghost busters movie over 80% review". Which means I don't trust them or their reviews.
+Budasteelers1 because everyone thinks giving negative reviews makes them above others
It’s because he’s traveling the universe and conquering it with his power
All that with only using 0.0001% of his power
It was because he was consumed by the power of shaggy, which ultimately made him part of the universe
No matter how much you may not like the live action Scooby-doo movies everyone has to admit Matthew Lillard was the perfect man to play Shaggy.
without a paddle was great lol
Yes
I really enjoyed Without a Paddle: Nature's Calling, for that matter. The actors were having a lot of fun and they're talented and the absurd script moved right along. When movie critics try to judge silly comedies that aren't aimed at snobs they generally are incapable of doing so fairly because they're snobs.
Up with Lillard, down with the hacks at Looper.
said ma mind is tellin me nooooooooooo
Freeze perrrrverrtsss!
No doubt, that's why I think rotten tomatoes scores are a hot load of pretentious garbage.
He just needs to sit down and take some notes from heath ledger and watch as many horror thrillers as possible. I could easily see him revive his career in the horror genre and be some mad sadistic serial killer. Kinda like a Joker personality with elements of say Ted Bundy, when a stranger calls, hanibal, etc!
He is a god, he can vanish.
I remember him best from the movie, the thirteen ghosts!
yeah i remember that movie too. i wonder why they didnt mention that movie in their list.
yea he had a cool/funny role in 13 ghosts.. fire movie not many people know bout it tbh
YES!! Loved it!
Mrs. Thomas
I love that movie! Wickedly terrifying and he was great in it!
Without a Paddle was great, I don't know what she is talking about! LOL
I agree.
Q she can’t relate to having friends and wanting to go on a treasure hunt.
*He is just powering up..*
Because he had to go to a diffrent world to contain his power to train so he wouldn't destroy the whole world
I absolutely LOVED him in Hackers and SLC Punk. He was amazing in both roles.
Stevo is the role I always really remember him for. One of my favorites.
BOOM WHA WHA BOOM.

_But my Body! My body is telling me Yeeeeaaaah!~_
Only tapped the video because I saw the thumbnail of him in his shaggy outfit and that's the only reason I knew his existence
You must either be over fifty or under twenty because he was sort of unavoidable for a while there.
DoubleFailMech or under twenty.
ULTRAMAN exact reason im here
Owen McCauley either way, Scooby doo movie was good :D
ULTRAMAN His portrayal of Shaggy was great, but I've had to watch that movie with my daughter too many times to call it great.
Shaggy used 0.00000000000001 % of his power to make this 2 year old video show on my youtube feed
I really like him as the voice of Shaggy. I think he was a perfect replacement for Casey Kasem. Playing shaggy on the big screen also might have temporarily slowed down his momentum as a serious actor but I think in the long run it helped him get a solid lifetime voice acting job while he builds himself up in other roles.
without a paddle was funny as hell.i could probably consider one of my favorites.matthew lillard is a good actor dont care what others think
James Campbell agreed👊
The burden of trying to posses
just .00001 percent of shaggys power was far too much for his mortal body and so he perished for his foolishness
Its because he became one with the universe after playing shaggy, he couldn't handle his own power
13 ghosts. Check it out. His performance is dope as fuck.
Ok but he was perfect in Scooby-Doo.
He was overcome by the almighty power of Shaggy and couldn't work anymore
It's such a pity he isn't cast more often. He really is an amazing actor. Type casting him is the worst thing anyone could do. He is amazing in every roll he plays. I especially loved him in Good Girls. To show how broad his tallent is just compare him in Good Girls, Scooby-Doo and Scream. All the rolls are very different and he does them all flawlessly. He doesn't need to be a lead. Most supporting roles are far better actors than the lead anyway. I hope to see him in more films moving forward.

Scooby Doo 2 monsters unleashed, has pretty much most of the villains from the tv series all in one movie
14% for Without a Paddle?! That was a hilarious movie, and most people I know liked it. Very odd.
Critics cant be trusted
Keep in mind that comedy of all kinds is an acquired taste. Most comedy works by being off beat and a little obvious. They are also a bit shallow in terms of filmmaking. Critics tend to over analyze a movie and except depth where there isn't any. That's why most of the time you'll see the critics score low but the audience score much higher.
I'm not a huge comedy fan... There are certain types of comedy that I like. I do not like gross out comedy or screwball/stupid comedy.
Without a Paddle, in my opinion, was a fun movie. I enjoyed it. It's ultimately a forgettable movie. If someone asked me for a good comedy, that wouldn't be near the top of my list. But if someone asked if it is worth a watch, i'd tell them yes.
fleshTH I disagree. They don't see depth that isn't there.
They've just seen a lot more movies and have more to compare it to. If you've only seen a few "buddy comedies" it was probably pretty good. When you've seen dozens, or hundreds, the trope gets played out.
same here I still love without a paddle to this day Hollywood just can't see good movies as well as we can ig
