Chemical Engineer here. Just FYI, for house paint that exploded in the wheel well. Let dry. Rent a dry Ice blaster and a tote of dry ice. Total would've been around $150 for the ice and most likely around $2-300 for the blaster for a day. Dry ice blasting would've made quick work of the paint, and leaves absolutely no moisture and will not damage electronics like the wheel sensor or abs. It also is pretty accurate, so no worries about overspray or hitting the rotors. Look into it. It's a unique solution for many unique situations. It can be dialed back like pressure washing so you only remove what you want, but doesn't shoot spray and removed material all over the place.

I will add that as part of a restoration project I'm removing undercoating from the chassis of a 70s vehicle. As it aged it pulled off of the chassis and created bubbles and air gaps that led to water getting behind it and laying there against the steel. In a few places this led to rust out. I would not worry about a thin coating on a fender liner for appearances sake but think twice before putting really heavy layers on your car's metal parts as some previous owner did to my vehicle. On another 60s vehicle I own a previous somebody used a combination of roofing tar and undercoating to hide rust perforation. Thick layer of roofing tar over rusted steel topped with undercoating to give the wheel well a uniform appearance. Just something for everyone to look for when you buy an old car for cruising. I knew what I was buying so there were not any surprises.

I've been in the used car recon business for over 18 years and dealers only use OEM if they have to. Either way, he is for the most part, very knowledgeable about most of what he does
Good demo. I’m thinking doing this on my F150. The factory coating in the wells is wearing off from mud and pressure washing and it looks blotchy now and it’s visible. The sound eliminator would help also as I have more aggressive wheels on that have more road noise. I’ll have to try this. Might also try it on my lifted truck but that’s a bigger project. Lol.
That is a good idea as a patch to the problem, soon as it gets some miles on it that stuff is gunna get chunks out of it and all the white will just start to bleed through. The way u sprayed it on is why the texture is the way it is. If you pulled back a foot or so and sprayed more uniform it would get the texture in it. Up close doing a wet coat like that makes it smoother. For things like fender flares, or door clading, the wheel liner like what's In this video, this doesn't work on all black plastic but it does for most so test it in a spot that is not obvious until u get the feel for the type of parts you can doit to. But if you take a heat gun, heat gun for beginner, propane tourch if you have experience in doing this but make sure the part is clean, no dressing or anything on it and apply heat to it and it turns back to literally like brand new!! It just takes the outer layer and it "melts" it just enough to get the black shine back and u don't need to use any dressing or nothing like that. You can but it isn't necessary. The type of plastic that it does best with is mid 2000 Jeep's the fender flares and bumper end caps. That plastic, not just found on Jeep's BTW just a good example of the type of textured plastic it works the best with. Try it out on some old parts but once you get the hang of it it is an amazing trick to making an old car look showroom ready and actually stay that way after it is washed also!!
Nice Vid..If the WW is Clean, just spray it.. But if not? I go to the 25 cent Car wash and High Pressure Wash the WW's ( Leave engine running, so can turn steering wheel to get inside the WW.) by the time I get home? All dry and ready to Remove the Wheel/Tire and Start spraying.. Thanks Scott for the Type of Spray paint to use..I've used the Cheapest I can get at WalMart. But only last 1 yr.. I'll use Duplicolor Next time.. BTW- Everycar I buy, I also Pressure wash the Frame and Extra Undercoat it I buy a Couple of cans of undercoating ..Just make sure that Frame( or whatever) is Clean best you can.Last for yrs.. And good to do any BodyParts you can get too and Undercoat them ..
Oh ya forgot to say with the paint on the liner like you were dealing with in the video, sort of a play off my previous comment but if you remove the liner completely from the vehicle. One, you can really get all up in it and clean it up good with it out. And two, if you apply heat from the backside of the linner it will actually start to release the mold release agent from when it was first casted into it's current shape from the factory cuz it's still there and the heat brings it out if it's not too too old but you can then just peel the paint right off of it in leaving it Brandy new looking and ready to get back on the road again!!

I think it's a great idea for a got to get it done today problem. Lot's of other way's But most won't fit the time frame or the most important one make the car owner happy within a hour or two. Thank you for letting me into your world at the 15:48 time frame
As a detailer you should have completely cleaned the wheel liner then spray because it lasts a good couple of years good clean nice finish than its worth doin
if you have a rubber lip attached to the fender liner or quarter panel it will cause condensation to get in between the metal and the rubber. It will rust the quarter panel or fenders fairly quickly. I always take them out when buying a car.
Scott, have you ever used Duplicolor’s CP199 Clear Adhesion Promoter followed by their Trim and Bumper paint? I used it on some badly faded bumper trim and it still looks new over 2 years later. I don’t know how it would hold up in a wheel well but it sure would look better than that undercoating paint.
I've undercoat my whole truck 3 times in the last year and it loses color eventually and flakes off sometimes so yea this didn't work for me. Next gonna try the raptor brand undercoating or truck bed liner. And I gotta say an expert would just take out the liner so no over spray and much easier to paint
i just used dupli-color yesterday for the first time. I painted my valve cover and have to say...great paint! Maybe just a note, but a pro-detailer should use raceramps ;-) It's an awesome, easy way to get the front of the car up aswell as being able to clean the underside well. Another thing , i always lifted the cars up I ever did, at garages it's easy to use a lift ofcourse , but it helped alot! Over the years, I've had many customers whom I could warn of rust, bad exhausts, faulty enginesupports, oilleaks, brakeproblems etc in time, just because I lifted up the cars. As a pro-detailer you actually should clean the underside, certainly when cleaning out an enginebay, and take the extra's with it. Your customers will appreciate it alot!
rubberized undercoating is really bad for trapping salt and dirt. The problem is that that undercoating dries and cracks and then the salt and water get underneath it and are trapped accelerating the corrosion of the vehicle.
I couldn't stop looking at that rusty frame. Can you review RP-342 some day? It's military grade cosmoline.. a lot of people Rave about how much better it works Vs. undercoatings and oils

That's all fine and dandy, till you have to pull the liner. With the under coating on the screw, and bolt heads. So if you have to get to a sensor or turn signal bulb for example. I think plastic and vinyl paint as a better option. It may not last as long, but you can pull the liners if need be.

great question...and yes it was all over the wheel and metal parts..but those areas are somewhat easy to clean and remove paint from..i used a 3m eraser wheel to remove the paint from the clear coated wheel...but the video was more about heavy build up on plastic and wheel well liners...thanks for your comment
A better way would have been to use Duplicolor Trim & Bumper Paint, it is flat black and flexable...Being that you didnt want the texture...If you wanted texture your way would be perfect...

Hey Scott...If you like an undercoat with little to no texture, try FlexSeal. I wasn't a fan of it at first, but my ATV brush guard's protective coating had rubbed off over the years and had started to rust in spots. I coated it and the control arms with FlexSeal and was SUPER happy with the results. And the bonding was fantastic, both on plastic and metal. Thicker than paint, but with smooth texture.

Nice thing about is that after a year or so when its starts getting kinda chalky looking and not so nice again, all you gotta do is shoot it with another coat of the under coating and it looks brand new again for another year. I've been doing this for years now to keep mine and also customers vehicles looking nice and sharp looking!!!!

I’m familiar with how to do it from an amateur perspective but I get a lot of compliments. Can you maybe give me a basic list of products I should have to be more professional? I have basic stuff for interior detailing and some exterior. Mostly stuff I get at auto zone and places like that
Scott could u just jack up the car beside the tire to give u a good wheel gap and just avoid taking the wheel off? Maybe drape a old towel over the back of the wheel just in case it blows back while spraying....?
Home Depot, AutoZone, O'Reily, Walmart, it's between 4-7$ a can. The can looks the same size as yours. I sprayed my grille and chevy emblems with it and they lasted 2+ years before needing to be redone. But I also use a heavy ass pressure washer, and it will rip this rubberized coating off. And to undo it I just had to peel the stuff off, or use Acetone which helps it not adhere properly. I'm willing to bet they're the same, maybe it's even cheaper for you.
yes i think dupli-color is like 6 dollars a can but to be honest i can't remember ...but i will for sure follow your tip and look into it...as always trent i appreciate you on the channel:)
Thank you, never thought about using it as a undercoating. I've always used 3M's undercoating product. For whatever reason this Plasti-Dip idea just came to my head. Sometimes Home Depot will have it on sale for like 2-3$ a can though, awesome buy at that price.
you would have to cover everything, cause if you spray suspension parts, especially springs, is gonna be a pain in the ass to remove, but is better than painting, considering nobody gives a shit or looks at wheel wells lol

I have a feeling without an adhesion promoter for the PLASTIC, the undercoating will just flake off as soon as you go into the car wash with a pressure washer...
How does somebody run over a can of white paint? I've never seen a can of paint on any road during my 45 years of driving. Tell the customer that he needs his undercarriage rustproofed. I see rust everywhere on that car.

Depends on the brand. The best product to use instead of this stuff Scott used is a rattle can of bedliner. Works awesome, lasts and lasts and looks great.

But just trying to explain to someone what the texture looks like without them knowing would be best explained as an "orange peel" look. I used bedliner in my wheel well. Still looks good after 6 months.

Best to use a removal tool on the fasteners(if needed) and spray the liner off the vehicle. Not much extra time at all.

Scott could u just jack up the car beside the tire to give u a good wheel gap and just avoid taking the wheel off? Maybe drape a old towel over the back of the wheel just in case it blows back while spraying....?

Scott, this stuff seems very similar to Plasti-Dip. Have you tried that product? It's a rubber coating as well.

Home Depot, AutoZone, O'Reily, Walmart, it's between 4-7$ a can. The can looks the same size as yours. I sprayed my grille and chevy emblems with it and they lasted 2+ years before needing to be redone. But I also use a heavy ass pressure washer, and it will rip this rubberized coating off. And to undo it I just had to peel the stuff off, or use Acetone which helps it not adhere properly. I'm willing to bet they're the same, maybe it's even cheaper for you.
yes i think dupli-color is like 6 dollars a can but to be honest i can't remember ...but i will for sure follow your tip and look into it...as always trent i appreciate you on the channel:)
Thank you, never thought about using it as a undercoating. I've always used 3M's undercoating product. For whatever reason this Plasti-Dip idea just came to my head. Sometimes Home Depot will have it on sale for like 2-3$ a can though, awesome buy at that price.
you would have to cover everything, cause if you spray suspension parts, especially springs, is gonna be a pain in the ass to remove, but is better than painting, considering nobody gives a shit or looks at wheel wells lol

I have a feeling without an adhesion promoter for the PLASTIC, the undercoating will just flake off as soon as you go into the car wash with a pressure washer...
How does somebody run over a can of white paint? I've never seen a can of paint on any road during my 45 years of driving. Tell the customer that he needs his undercarriage rustproofed. I see rust everywhere on that car.

Depends on the brand. The best product to use instead of this stuff Scott used is a rattle can of bedliner. Works awesome, lasts and lasts and looks great.

yes of course:)...but in this situation orange peel does not apply because the product is made to be textured by design..orange peel is when we are talking about car paint...thanks my friend:)

But just trying to explain to someone what the texture looks like without them knowing would be best explained as an "orange peel" look. If you say "texture" there are hundreds of different types of textures. I was just trying to simplify the term. Any who....nice job! Love the detailing with the paint sprayer vid!
