Okay, my family has an almost 7 year old fixed male rescue dog. He has separation anxiety. We've had him for 6 years. We have two other dogs which we've had around the same time, both female and fixed. He's always gotten along with both of them.
A few months ago, he started peeing in the house in random places. He particularly liked to pee on electrical stuff, which is obviously dangerous. I acted quickly to re-train him and get to the source of the problem. I figured that he was doing this because of stress and anxiety due to a recent event, which was my older brother moving out, and our family moved to a new house shortly after that. We took him to his vet, and she ruled out any physical health problems, and agreed that it was likely his anxiety. We changed his medication around for a bit and we found a med and a dosage that works for him. He stopped peeing in the house completely for about 6 months. He's been much calmer and much happier as well. During this time, we continued enforcing good behavior, aka, peeing outside, listening to commands, etc... However, he has started peeing in the house again, this time it's mostly been on the furniture. We've had a lot going on, but nothing new. We haven't changed his meds and he gets them on time every day. I'm very concerned, because my father says if we can't figure out why he's doing this and stop it, he's going to bring him to the pound. Keeping him in a kennel is not an option as he is very high energy. Keeping him outside is not an option because our yard is small and I live in a very hot climate. I'm in a tough spot financially because I'm disabled and can't work, so I really can't afford to bring him to a trainer or anything like that. What would you suggest I do beyond what I've already done? How do I help him quickly? I'm afraid to give him up because he's getting older now, and his anxiety would only get that much worse if we abandoned him. He was abandoned by his last owner, so I don't like thinking about how he'd feel if that happened again. I'm afraid he wouldn't be adopted by someone who can really help him. I don't want him to live in a shelter for the rest of his life, and I don't want him to be put down after not being adopted for a period of time. My dad says he doesn't care whether he goes to no-kill shelter or not. I couldn't live with that possibility. At the same time, he's ruining property that doesn't belong to me, and I can't afford to replace the furniture he's destroying... I feel really lost. Any suggestions?

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would recommend looking into food puzzles and I would also make sure that you're walking him at least 2 miles a day. I know you don't want him living in a crate because it was high energy but if he goes back to a pound he's either going to live in a cage for the rest of his life or he's going to be potentially euthanized. So as of right now the best option is to try and work with him and keep him in the great room he's not going not being supervised

He will lift his leg and will pee on the pad stuck to the wall with the sticky tac. You can replace the pad on the wall. Or, you can buy magnets online for peeing dogs. That’s not always true (did you mean “doesn’t”?). I neutered my 4-5 yo rescue because the vet said it would help the marking and that was a horrid lie. My dog because more subdued (and he wasn’t even difficult to begin with) and still pees in the house despite my attempts. I would NEVER recommend neutering a dog just to get the marking to stop. It’s an inappropriate blanket recommendation.

They can but also they spite piss if they know it makes you angry so they will do it for attention. I had cocker spaniel who only do it if I ignored him or was hanging out with a girl. The water management is a good point though. I’m going to control this pitbull’s water intake and walk him 30 mins after food and water hopefully this will get him on a good pee schedule.

I put pads in there and tried a doggie diaper and he pulls it off and tear the pads up. I am so tired. I hate to get rid of him, but this is starting to wear on me. How do I get my 3 dogs to stop peeing? I have 2 girls and 1 boy (all not fixed). One girl in completely good, but the other girl wi just do it whenever. She purposely pees after we let her outside, and our Male dog only pees after she does to scent mark. Is there any ways I can get her to stop peeing after we have her out? We take her our every 2 hours and leave her out there for 10 mins

When training a big problem, it akways helps that I do not feed my dog food all day except when we go for walks and every time he peed he got a few pieces of kibble. Every time I call and comes, some kibble.. Every time he sits, stays or does anything good, I give him some kibble. By the time we we're done he eats a half cup of food but its in reward format.
      In training,
I feed less, reward with food more.
He started peeing in one spot in the kitchen (3x in a row) and I read that the problem was he could still smell it.
So I crated him in the house or kept him on a leash with me the entire day for 2 days and cleaned the tile 5 times.
      So far, so good.
He still gets kibble when he pees in a certain spot.
      👍

My 6 year old male had parvo as a baby and wasn't ready to be neutered or potty trained until about 9 mos old. He is the youngest of 3 Frenchie brothers ( the oldest passed in 2020) but he was smaller and got so much more attention than the others being so sick. We didn't crate him because he was so sick and I was bathing him and washing blankets multiple times a day. I personally kept him alive for 10 days before the ICU took over them antibiotics/antivirals for months. Now he is the baby of two - the older one is perfectly potty trained and sleeps in a crate (he turns 10 in November). He also has had spinal surgery for congenital vertebrae issues and loss of bowel control. He recovered well but now he has begun to slide backwards and cannot always make it outside to the yard to potty 😢. His walking has deteriorated again and of course I'm sure he will live forever but unfortunately Link's behavior has been very difficult - his marking is getting worse and he seems very bored so he is acting out. Also he is now picking up his brother's "bad habits". Would an alpha female puppy be any benefit to getting him to learn to stop marking from potty training her and also give him a buddy to boss him around?? I know it sounds like a crazy idea but we have literally tried EVERYTHING 😬🤨🤔

My dad has passed away recently and we've took his 5yr old French bulldog in. He's a lovely little dog, great with the kids, a great character etc. But he's peeing in our house. Not cocking his leg to pee but peeing on the floor in the passage. We take him out multiple times per day for walks and let him out multiple times in-between walks, we've only had him a few days but I'm thinking at 5 yrs old surely he shouldn't be peeing indoors, I mean it's not like it's scent marking up a wall etc, it's big puddles on the lino floor. Is this because he's new here the little fella has had alot of change recently with my dad passing on and coming to our house. I've just not had it with previous dogs before. Maybe a check up at the vets is needed to rule out medical problems. 🤔

I’m fostering a 7 month old dog that was in a bad situation for a few months. Starved and locked in a cage. She drinks crazy amounts of water and pees like 15 times a day. Maybe more! I let her outside and take her for walks at least every hour and she still pees inside literally 15min later. Large puddles. I saw her hold it for 6h before in the kennel and she just saw a vet so I don’t think it’s a medical issue. I’m honestly at my wits end. She is also peeing in the kennel now. No matter what I do she just wont stop. I’m devoting tons of time to fixing this but nothing is working.

Then give it spanking then put it in the cage or outside. That's what we use do, we took them to the mess right after they did it and spanked it on the butt with a belt or rolled up newspaper or a slipper then put it in timeout. After a few spanking sessions they didn't do it anymore and now wait by the door when they have to potty.

My puppy was let out back and peed, she was taken for a walk and pooped, 8 minutes of being inside and she pees on my kitchen fatigue mat. She always pees on the fatigue mat. It’s driving me crazy.
It’s rebellion, I’m sure it is, but to what I don’t know. Everyone’s crazy for this dog including myself, she gets all the love and attention and praise.
She’s not six months old yet. I know she’s a puppy. She is capable of holding it in for a good while. She’ll never pee in the truck, she’ll never pee in her crate. It’s only when she’s given free reign to wander indoors for a minute, and the second she’s unsupervised is when it happens. She’s not nervous, or even unhappy, but also not over excited either. She just does it for some reason

She was spayed at 1.5 yo, but 4 months ago she started to pee inside, she is sleeping at she pees (only a small amount to be called an accident), then she started to do it everywhere! at any time, she can be laying around and then BAM! a small mark of pee.
Then 2 weeks ago she started peeing inside, like full peeing, but our house has 3 leves and every level has a place for her to pee, in the first one we have the patio, in the second one we have a small corridor and in the third level she can pee everywhere since its the terrace. Is that a bad thing? maybe she need only one space for pee so she can know where she can only pee. I already took her to the vet and they are doing tests

Papillons, two of them. Now about 13yrs old. I've had them their whole lives. Neutered, no health issues. #1 dog, used the doggie door 100% of the time at first. #2 came from owner who used large crate while at work, he peed in crate and also when he was out of crate. He's been peeing in my house since day one. #2 followed suit and has been peeing ever since. Over the years I've tried everything I know and could find out online and speaking with trainers. They have their own bedroom room with doggie door. I sure wish someone would discover why they do this and be able to fix it. Both were neutered before they could even know what marking was so I feel pretty good that it's not a marking issue. We can rule out any health problems, I was a vet tech so they have had exemplary care thier whole lives including regular blood work, fecals, exams, dentals etc.
My conclusion after all these years is that maybe it's a breed thing and when it comes to peeing, their just assholes. Lol. Other than the peeing thing they are the coolest, funniest, most loving dogs and I can't imagine my life without them.

There is no solution. If you adopt an adult dog that has never been potty trained, there is ALWAYS a chance that the dog will pee inside the house. The dog simply cannot hold his/her pee as any dog that has been potty trained. Sometimes the dog simply can't hold the pee; sometimes the dog gets scared if you yelled; sometimes the dog gets anxious when you pet him/her; ..

He was so sweet but he was never properly trained outside and I got him when he was over a year old.
So the way I trained him and all my dogs is.. #1. Start by not feeding the dog during the day. No food or water on the floor.
I offer water many times a day.
When I take the dog out for a walk and he pees or poops, I give them a couple of bites of kibble.
Whenever I train, I don't free feed. If I'm trading him to "get down" and he listens, I give him a few bites of kibble.
When I call the dog and he comes, kibble.
I would suggest rewarding peeing, pooping outside, every time. No misses.
I actually had to walk my dog in my own backyard for a month to teach him to go potty in a certain place and then I was able to watch and reward.
So I take him out 5x a day and I say "go potty" and he does, most of the time. I keep saying it.
It's a little harder with number 2. But after he eats, I leash him, won't let him free ever after eating. I put the leash around the leg of my chair. Never let him out of your sight unless he's crated.
      After we eat now,
I wait 30 mins and walk him in my yard.
      "Go pup pup"
      Go! Now!
He's usually slow to go. If he doesn't he's back on the leash. And we try in 15 mins.
      In the morning he's good.
I still train him by walking him in my own yard to go to one spot.
Pain in the butt but I do a few exercises- (squats, lunges or stretch) while he sniffs and then decides to go- finally.
He been doing fine until just recently he peed 3 times in my kitchen.
So I went back to putting him on a leash in the house and restricting his movement using a 5 pound dumbbell to hold the leash.
I walk the dog to one particular place in the backyard.
I watch if the dog pees.
      Immediately reward!
The trick is not to free feed the dog so the dog is actually hungry and more willing to pay attention.
A hungry dog is an attentive dog.
An overfed dog is lazy, unattentive , uncooperative.
I taught my cat to come in by using real meat every single time he came in when called.
My husband stands at the door and tries to call him in but he never comes and then he has to call me saying, " Honey, please call the cat" and the cat comes.
      Stop free feeding and watering.
Offer him water throughout the day, so you get an idea of how much he's drinking and when.
      It takes a few days.
      Also...
Why my my dog was peeing in the kitchen in the exact same place was because, (I read) that the floor probably still had a little scent left, probably in the grout.
I soaked the area with vinegar. Then washed it 5x.
      No more peeing.
You need to start with everything being 100% clean, no scent at all.
Its hard. Idk how you can do that for the whole house. Fabreeze?
Id rent a Carpet cleaner and use white vinegar. Acetic acid. Then rinse many times.
I would say...everything he's ever peed on must be cleaned or disposed of. It sucks. It makes me angry.
      I feel your pain.
Just remember it's not personal. They smell the old smell and they think it's OK.
      Good luck.

What if you take dog out regularly, and often but won’t pee outside but will pee inside later when you’re not watching? Would they do this for attention?

i have a female german shepherd, she pees and poops in the house and on my bed multiple times even when we control when she eats and drinks. also, we keep her outside and let her sit out there and when she comes back in she pees in the house. i don't believe anything medical is wrong with her, but how could i make her start peeing outside instead of in the house without beating and yelling?

first thing you need to do is make sure that she does not have any sort of medical condition that's causing this.once you've ruled that out then you will look at positively reinforcing her either with treats play or praise

I had a dog like this, made me crazy. I'd walk him, nothing. He'd come in and pee. Aaargh!
He was so sweet but he was never properly trained outside and I got him when he was almost 2 years old.
So the way I finally trained him and all my dogs is..
#1. Of course,, crate him every single night.
      To help with bladder control.
He learned to hold for over 10- hours.
      #2. Just as important.
✋ free feeding the dog during training days. No food on the floor. No water either.
      Seriously.
      3. I offer water every hour to see how much he's drinking and when, so I can be attentive to his pee schedule.
      4. I take the dog out for a walk every hour to the exact same spot and say, "go potty." When they go, I praise lavishly and reward with a couple of bites of kibble.
I do this for all training days.
      Works much faster.
When I train the dog to "get down" and he listens, I give him a few bites of kibble.
When I call the dog and he comes, reward, praise and always kibble.
I actually had to walk my dog in my own backyard to teach him to go potty in a certain place and then I was able to watch and reward.
      5. Have ONE pee/ poop spot and repeat many times,"go potty" go!
Now when I let him out and he runs to the "spot," even if i can't watch, I know he goes and I praise and reward with kibble.
      6. Training #2 was different.
Once he was pee trained it was easier.
After he ate, I leashed him, everytime, won't let him free after eating a bowl of food.
I wait 30 mins and walk him in my yard to the potty place.
      "go potty"
      Go! Now!
He's usually slow to go. If he doesn't he's back on the leash and we try in 15-20 mins.
Back to the ONE spot every 15-20 mins. Reward and praise.
I still train him by periodically walking him in my own yard to the potty spot and reward and praise. Just in case.
Pain in the butt but I do a few exercises- (squats, lunges or stretch) while he sniffs.
He been doing fine until just recently he peed 3 times in my kitchen.
So I went back to putting him on a leash in the house and restricting his food, water and movement using a 10 pound dumbbell to hold the leash in each room near me.
Again I offer water every hour.
We did the walk to the spot 5x and he went.
Immediately rewarded! Don't forget it's just his kibble.
⭐The trick is no free feeding so the dog is actually a bit hungry and more willing to pay attention.
A hungry dog is an attentive dog.
An overfed dog is lazy unattentive and uncooperative.
It's teaching them cooperation, they won't starve, they will learn.
I taught my cat to come in by using real meat every single time he came in when called.
My husband stands at the door and tries to call him in but he never comes and then he has to call me saying, "Honey, please call the cat" and the cat comes only to my voice, still. Treat or not.
Stop free feeding and offer him water throughout the day, so you get an idea how much he's drinking and when.
It takes a few days maybe a week.
      Also...
Why my the dog was peeing in the kitchen in the exact same place was because, (I read) that the floor probably still had a little scent left after my friends dog peed.
      Probably in the grout.
