For 30 years I was trying to remember why I was sent to stay with my Great Aunt for the Summer I was 7. I knew something drastic must have happened at home but I could not find out. Last year I was standing in my kitchen and it came to me all of a sudden. She lost her husband and they sent me there to keep her company. How precious and now all the memories make sense. @CTW-G Good question. I grew up in the 60s. I didn't think my family would be honest if it were something shameful. I did ask my older sister and she said she didn't know.
Kicking you out because you only had 300k subscribers. I bet they're kicking _themselves_ now. Good for you, Dr. Mike, sticking to your principles. Sometimes integrity pays off.
I feel like integrity always pays in the long run. Sure short term profit always is an option, but integrity helps with many social dynamics and can actually be pretty profitable.@@teresaellis7062
It's such an American story. Most businesses around the world have foresight and can read potential markets fairly well. American business philosophy revolves around short term profits with no real long term sustainability and it's part of why the US economy is falling to pieces.
Thank you for not quitting TH-cam. And a HUGE thank you for not being pushed into endorsing things that you can't fully stand behind as a medical professional. Your comment about extra vitamins and such not really shortening illness time really hit home with me. My family has chronic medical issues--everything from severe asthma and autoimmune hives to chronic sinusitis and a deviated septum. If I had a dollar for every time someone said, "Oh, you should take this vitamin," or "You need to be exposed to more germs," or "More time outdoors would help your asthma," I'd be a heck of a rich person. You'd think that they'd understand if there's a genetic predisposition to health issues and you've been dealing with it for almost FORTY years, something like a vitamin isn't going to magically fix it. Having regular checkups, eating healthy, and following treatment plans that my specialists give me, however, does help me live a better quality of life.
I agree! Although I have to mention that I have a chronic Vit D deficiency due to underlying chronic medical conditions and I'm permanently on prescribed Vit D tablets which really helps to keep my levels normal. Blood tests have shown how alarmingly low my Vit D levels become when I'm not on these prescription tablets. I also have to get monthly Vit B12 injections and iron (IV) infusions once or twice a year to keep my levels normal due to my nutrient absorption issues and other chronic medical conditions. So I would def advocate for supplements prescribed by specialists (not just a GP) if they make a huge difference and it shows up in your blood tests (or blood work as Americans call it).
My mum had a small patch of dry skin on her top lip that wouldn’t heal since 2018, so eventually spoke to the doctor. Turned out it was basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer). She was prescribed some chemotherapy cream and got the all clear last week, thank goodness! Always wear sunscreen!
Chemotherapy cream lol. Ok I shouldn't laugh but there's no such thing. They use extremely acidic/basic creams to essentially burn off anything it touches. My mum went through several iterations of it as well. Some types look gruesome while their face peels off but it looks great afterwards - lot less worrying, if you know what i mean.
My cousin's husband sunscreen actually caused him to get cancer because o fit's ingredients ...so make sure the sunscreen is a healthy one. He is pissed because he wore it faithfully , & boom it made him worse. Sad
Thanks for not quitting TH-cam. I hate that some company called y'all a failure when you probably own one of the best medical TH-cam channels we have here.
I used to work for a veterinarian drug testing show horses. I was a Pee Collector. The horses who'd been on the track (ex-race horses) were conditioned to pee post-race when you whistled 'La Cucaracha". Worked like magic.
...Oh my god just image a pissed-off employee - or even just random spectator - wreaking havoc with knowledge. That's a gross-out comedy sketch that just writes itself.
He talked about it on another video. Something like that almost happened because he wouldn’t support something he didn’t like, for people that were funding his videos.
@@andrewg2032 It's been awhile, three months to be exact, and no one answered your question, so here it goes; Dr. Mike, started a TH-cam channel with investors money so they expected him to do as they wished, whether it was ethical or not. When, Dr. Mike, refused to be sponsored by a product he didn't believe in the investors were out and called his channel to be a failure. But, Dr. Mike picked it up from there on his own and now have over 12.1 million subscribers. Yay !
A lot of people are way too easily embarrassed by their own bodies so it's hard to ask questions about things like peeing in the shower when we see doctors in person. I'm not one of those people but I'm glad Dr. Mike can be their safe place where they can ask embarrassing questions and he takes the time to answer them. We need to normalize these conversations so we can all be comfortable being open and honest with our health care providers so we can advocate for ourselves and get better care.
Something to note about peeing in the shower is that shower water and toilet water don't always go to the same place. You usually don't have to worry about this in your house, but Cruise ships usually do handle shower water and toilet water differently.
Also drs don’t seem too interested in anything else except for the very specific thing you came in for. Went to see a dr to see if I was pre diabetic (I wasn’t) & just brought up my irregular cycle & gave her a graph of them courtesy of my period app & she basically went “weird. Anyway…”
Dr Mike I’m so glad you didn’t quit TH-cam when you almost did. I have had some terrible medical experiences which causes me to have pretty severe medical anxiety to the point where I won’t go to the doctor until something gets really bad. After watching your content (and also Mama Dr Jones!) for a few years now I’ve realized it’s really helped with my fear of going to the doctor, and has raised my standards for how I should be treated/given me language to speak up for myself when I do go. Thank you ‼️‼️‼️
Some doctors can be so arrogant and look down on you like you’re an idiot … I have encountered a few over my many years. If I don’t have a connection to a Dr I will never put myself being tin their presence ever again, I don’t care how good they think they are. Your mental health is also important! I ways do what is best for you. ❤
The pelvic floor dysfunction is so real but I almost never hear it talked about so kudos for that! My pelvic PT got me to stop having urgency because I was doing that “force it just in case” thing all the time. The first doctor to speak to me about my pelvic floor was a pelvic pain specialist in another city, (who referred me to my PT) not my gp, not my OBGYN, like an endometriosis surgeon. After going to PT for my pelvic floor I’m a huge advocate for learning about it and talking about it, I think it would help a lot of folks :)
How did you deal with the anxiety when trying to make the change? I know I'm causing myself problems by going too frequently, but if I don't, I can't think about anything else.

I asked a question on another one of your videos. Thought about it for a day. Made a doctor's appointment. Thanks for getting me to put it into words and realize it was a real problem!
Never quit TH-cam, Mike. You do such an amazing job debunking misinformation n we wait for u every Wednesday and Sunday with something new. Kudos to u, Doc.👏
The memory thing makes sense to me. That loss of connection to a memory is exactly why I can't remember single points of data. I have to have multiple data points to remember so that I have multiple avenues to access that memory. I can remember entire lists of names of people but I can't remember a single name unless I connect it to an existing set in my head.
Yeah, also nothing is ever lost in our minds. In 2017 I had the same dream I had when I was in kindergarten. And for the past few years my dreams repeat sometimes, but I still keep forgetting them. Sometimes I randomly remember things I haven't thought about for 15 years.
Similar for me with song lyrics. I can't tell you "what comes after this line?" or "what's line number x?" but if I just go through the song in my head I can easily recite the whole thing.
Dr. Mike, I have diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis and as a result I am on disability and spend most of my time at home. I absolutely love your humor, I look forward to your videos everyday! You keep me smiling despite how I am feeling. This disease is very hard to live with. I loooooove you!
Respect for you man. Things like that make life suck, and seeing people like you break through the mold and enjoy life anyway just brightens my day. Keep positive my man :D
You drew a tough card. Your attitude is so admirable. I'm glad for your sake as well as many others I've seen on here that Doctor Mike didn't quit TH-cam.
Isn’t it amazing how someone you’ve never met can have such an incredible impact on your life? Dr. Mike and KallmeKris (and quite a few others like OneTopic and SpeechProf but it made me so happy when I first saw Dr. Mike and Kris collab that they were the first to kind) have helped me more then I ever would’ve expected and it’s wild. LOL...my mother trained my brothers and I to go to the bathroom before we went anywhere. So, even now at 76, when someone says, "Let's go", I have to use the bathroom. My mother trained me well.
Sunday mornings I go to the bathroom before I leave and then again when I get to church and after Sunday school and then after choir sings. It’s a good training you mom did with you.

Traumatic memories can be unconsciously kept deep in the brain and then can be triggered by a similar experience that brings back memories of the trauma. This is a form of survival that keeps memories from becoming overwhelming to remember. 😢
All memories are stored in the subconscious. Nothing is gone permanently (not including brain damage from head trauma) the memories are stored away we just can't consciously remember everything.
The splinter question reminded me that I had a splinter in my big toe that my body hardened and made the skin feel and look dead. It was just a little spot, but it made kickball impossible to play. A year later we just had to grind down the skin and take out the splinter because of pain. This happened in my early elementary days decades ago and there is nothing there today! So doctor Mike is telling the truth!
I had a coworker who to a multiflora rose thorn stuck in the back of her hand, and these thorns are TINY. She tried to pull it out but failed and then she figured her body would just work it out since it was so small. But further from the case, it made her hand swell and she had to go to urgent care for this tiny little thing.

Forgotten memories don’t go anywhere in most cases not involving brain degeneration or injury, they get blocked from access by other processes. Interestingly, “forgetting” is an active process in the brain that is different from “not remembering”. It’s why you can have something “on the tip of your tongue” and remember it later.
@@DizzyCarrots A brain works a lot differently than a computer, we know where memories are in a computer, we don't really know where they go in the brain or how they are stored even when we do still remember
@@davesmith1588 We do know how memories are stored in the brain (in the form of connections). The brain isn't based on binary calculations, but at an operational level it is rather similar to artificial computers, especially ones running neural networks.
I don't really understand how the brain remembers things, but I think I have permanently lost a few memories. I've had a few small, focal strokes that have diminished my memory as well as causing some mild aphasia, both expressive & receptive. Thank God it is not worse than it is! Sometimes memories come back, as Dr. Mike says , when I stop trying to remember! But sometimes they never come back.
There's actually a story similar to yours in the VTuber world. Twin VTubers were originally hired as tour guides. One of the reasons I selected Pediatrics as my specialty was how quickly kids recover. You get the problem solving aspect of Internal Medicine plus the immediate gratification of surgery. Plus preverbal children can’t tell what’s going on. I learned during residency that if I kept my mouth shut long enough, 95% of the time, the mom (regardless of the educational level) would point me to the correct diagnosis. the whole peeing in school thing where you go just in case is a real issue in a lot of places because a lot of teachers like to put a cap or time frame on when you can go and how much you can go so a lot of people in school just go whenever they have free time because they don't want to risk it
I always called it "final pee" when I was a little kid, because I'd always use the bathroom right before we got in the road for long trips. It's honestly just handier if you're going to be out of the house for a couple hours or more to pee beforehand just so you don't have to worry about usually gross public bathrooms, interrupting your time out, and if you hit traffic or you get stranded due to a car issue, you're all set until help comes or traffic moves. I still have a really strong bladder when needed too so the habit has never ruined my ability to hold my bladder if necessary
For anyone with mouth sore issues: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in toothpaste can cause canker sores. I used to get canker sores frequently, but after I learned about SLS from my dentist I changed to an SLS free toothpaste, and I stopped getting sores in my mouth. (Obviously this is the chemical irritation that Dr. Mike is mentioning, and everyone should listen to his advice about sores that don't heal.)
Yes, absolutely SLS. I found out about that in the '90s and have been using non-SLS toothpaste ever since (Sensodyne is a good brand). Not as cheap as the regular toothpastes, damn it, but worth it in having less sores. Basically SLS is a cleaning agent that's used in floor cleaner! And it erodes the skin on the inside of your mouth; no wonder it causes sores!

Dr.Mike's comment at the 3:25 mark about med students who become doctors after doing the bare minimum to slide by in med school reminds me of a joke I once heard: Q: What do you call the student who finishes last in their class at med school? A: Doctor
@@kathygonzalez8737 My parents are doctors. My mom taught med school. Med students are graded on how well they do on the floor during hands on training, as well as how well they do in the classroom. If they're getting Cs, it's because they're slacking on the floor during hands on training, too! Besides, what they learn in the classroom is knowledge that they then put into practice on the floor when they're getting that hands on training. If they're not paying attention in class, they're not gonna know what the hell they're doing on the floor! On top of that, though, if they're slacking in school, it's because they don't give a damn about the care they're providing. That's definitely not someone I want caring for me! Phones aren't the problem. The work til you die culture in America is the problem. American workers work over 100 more hours per year than Japanese workers on average and they often get less pay, little to no vacation time, and no mandated days off. I think that's a much bigger problem than you being on your phone.
@@AIHumanEquality In America if you're someone who works over 100 more hours per year than Japanese workers? sure, it may be. but to a student, phones are often one of THE most detrimental things to their health, mainly mentally.
@@AIHumanEqualityAh sure don't but how about personal experience? Just burying my phone away in my purse whenever I'm away from home has _vastly_ improved my mental health when i didnt even realize i had a problem. 1:00 “Best thing you can do to remember something is to not think about it; forcing yourself to remember is sometimes the worst thing you can do” Oh that explains why in high school I’d sometimes be taking a test and forget all that I studied the night before…and then remember it hours later after I’ve already taken it.
My son broke his arm while carrying an empty horse feed bucket when he was 2½. It took hours for him to be seen in the ER, and that's one of the rare times I've almost lost my temper at a hospital. Once the triage doc saw it, he was a little pissed they didn't give him higher priority. They x-rayed it and was a clean break. They used pins and rods to hold it in place while it healed. When they took the last x-ray, there was zero evidence of a break. He's 5½ now and occasionally says his arm hurts. But it doesn't slow him down.
In regard to the shoe question, a good compromise is wearing minimalist shoes, also know as barefoot shoes or zero drop shoes. These are shoes that allow your feet to mimic being barefoot while also being protected. A couple of good brands are Vivobarefoot and Xero Shoes. Be careful about the ones from mainstream brands such as Nike. The criteria for determining true barefoot shoes are that they have very little material which allows them some to be super flexible, they have little-to-no hill-to-toe drop (shoes like boots and high heels have a huge heel-to-toe drop, while shoes like sandals have none), and have a wide toe box, meaning you can spread your toes out inside your shoes.

Regarding the splinter question: a good friend of mine has, like me, suffered for years with plantar fasciitis - or at least so she thought. She saw a doctor about it last year because it was really bothering her. Something in her symptoms or description got him wondering, so he did an X-ray. And, drum roll please, he found that there was a sewing needle embedded at an angle in her foot and completely surrounded by tissue. This embedded needle required surgical removal. (The x-ray is really something to behold.) The doc believes that this needle had probably been in her foot for many years, probably since before she was a teenager; she’s now retired from teaching. To make matters worse, her husband is a GP.

I have a distinct advantage over people being dyslexic and having dyscalculia. It gives me a different way of looking at problems and leaning visually. I learned the best way of figuring things out when frustrated is simply walk a way and leave it alone, try not to think about it. When I can't find something or try to remember I usually sit for a moment, relax and try to think of nothing, only relaxing; I usually come up with the answer. Also if it's a more concerning problem just give yourself a night or two without stressing and let your subconscious work out the details. Usually works.

Glad to find a good doctor here on TH-cam. About peeing in the shower: Many years ago, I overheard some guys at my gym joking about it. I actually do it a lot. But never in public, open, gym showers. Only at home, in private. Hearing running water or seeing streams of water never make me want to pee. When I pee in the shower, I stand directly over the drain. I never let it run on my feet or get on my body. Probably a lot harder for women, though.
Can you please talk about Hashimoto's and how under diagnosed it is, especially for males(me). It is an absolutely debilitating autoimmune disease that has at times left me useless to my professional and home life for months at a time. I had to ask my Doctor to add thyroid antibodies to my bloodwork to detect the disease. Otherwise doctors seem to be beholden to TSH for diagnosing anything thyroid related. Which is an antiquated notion. Please bring awareness to this.
As far as women being generally colder, I understand that the fashion industry plays a role. A lot of women's clothing materials are thinner than men's clothing materials. This was/is a tactic by many designers to encourage women to purchase multiple layers.
It annoys me when I see a man in trousers,t shirt and pullover walking next to a woman in a short skirt, flimsy top, bare arms and looking totally frozen. It seems to be a given that in order to look attractive women have to expose certain areas to the elements, and the public gaze.

Autism was a recognized condition for 64 years before the mass proliferation of smartphones, but obviously the brain chemistry and structures existed long before that, so: yes, you could survive.
As someone with ASD and ADHD, yes, sitting alone with our thoughts CAN be very difficult, but it is absolutely worth it. Our brains need times of doing nothing- true nothing, not just being on our phones- to process information. That’s why stuff like showering and short walks are so good for your mental health- because you are giving your brain a break instead of continuing to force-feed it even more information. This year I have realized that a lot of my problems absolutely stem from or at least are worsened by my addiction to my phone and not letting my brain have times of rest while awake. I even think that neurodivergent people might be affected WORSE by this because we can more easily become overloaded or struggle to process information! If you get understimulated when you try to take these times of purposeful nothing, maybe try doing something mindless with your hands like using a fidget toy to keep your brain entertained without overloading it with information :)

Acids and bases are chemicals. That's chemotherapy. Chemical therapy. I'm pretty sure they make them with more traditional drugs, too.

It's been awhile, three months to be exact, and no one answered your question, so here it goes; Dr. Yay !
@XLindsLuvsPinkX why do purple believe this?
A lot of people are way too easily embarrassed by their own bodies so it's hard to ask questions about things like peeing in the shower when we see doctors in person. I'm not one of those people but I'm glad Dr. Mike can be their safe place where they can ask embarrassing questions and he takes the time to answer them. We need to normalize these conversations so we can all be comfortable being open and honest with our health care providers so we can advocate for ourselves and get better care.
This right here!

Can we appreciate the irony that our brains know exactly how they work they just refuse to tell us.

Question for you, how do you stay in such good shape?
Forgotten memories don’t go anywhere in most cases not involving brain degeneration or injury, they get blocked from access by other processes. Interestingly, “forgetting” is an active process in the brain that is different from “not remembering”. It’s why you can have something “on the tip of your tongue” and remember it later.
Funny how our brain is literally just a supercomputer controlling an organic suit lol
@@DizzyCarrots organic computer... were do you think they got the idea for computers ?
Oh that explains why in high school I’d sometimes be taking a test and forget all that I studied the night before…and then remember it hours later after I’ve already taken it.

I think an ADHD superpower is being able to have downtime and remember memories WHILE browsing TikTok WHILE pondering the meaning of life WHILE creating an epic 135473 step business plan that will change the world. It's like having multiple brains. Downside to ADHD is taking action on any of those things because all of those brains are at war with each other about priority but, hey, stilll a superpower.
Also a downside... trying to remember any of that 😅
Thank you for putting this into words!
8:11 guilty of peeing before I leave the house even if don’t have to go 😂😂 Just a habit
Sometimes I dont and wish I did lol. If I know im riding my escooter I def go before leaving. I dont wanna pee my pants speeding when standing lol
as someone with bad anxiety problems.. i do the same lol. basically impossible to leave the house without peeing first.
Which is interesting cos that’s what potty trainers are told to do..
Same, and I'm not stopping! lol
I also have Hashimoto’s. It causes so many problems for me. You have my sympathy.
1:10 a good reminder to get off the computer! 😅 I will finish this video after I give my brain time to just chill with my own thoughts. 😊
I am glad you stuck with it Dr.Mike 🧡
As far as women being generally colder, I understand that the fashion industry plays a role. A lot of women's clothing materials are thinner than men's clothing materials. This was/is a tactic by many designers to encourage women to purchase multiple layers.
my mom tells me men's shoes are better made than women's shoes
It annoys me when I see a man in trousers,t shirt and pullover walking next to a woman in a short skirt, flimsy top, bare arms and looking totally frozen. It seems to be a given that in order to look attractive women have to expose certain areas to the elements, and the public gaze.
I appreciate a doctor that isn't on board with the rampant overuse of drugs for everything. Probably one of the worst things for your health up there with bad diet and no exercise is to take a bunch of drugs you don't absolutely need to.
yeah you've definitely made it, watching you all the way from Egypt here.
Dr Mike your celebrity doppelganger is Patrick Dempsey aka Dr Derek of Grey's Anatomy!
Yes! Thats what I thought when I first saw him
HOORAY ANOTHER SERIES COMING BACK
Yes! I have/had many allergies (shellfish, peanuts, dogs, cats, etc)and I’m doing allergy shots once a month. I’ve been able to eat some shrimp products and all sesame seed products.
As an autistic person I wouldn’t be able to survive without my phone 😅 sitting with my thoughts and socializing can both be very hard
I agree very much. I also have ASD, and I either sit with my thoughts, or trying to socialize, can't do both without getting exhausted.
Autism was a recognized condition for 64 years before the mass proliferation of smartphones, but obviously the brain chemistry and structures existed long before that, so: yes, you could survive.
❤
I'm in the same situation. Gotta stimulate that noisy brain.
Mike, great stuff. Soo pleased you proved those f*s wrong. Rock on and keep rolling. You do add value, thank you!
haters gonna hate....... mike shines so bright
What is the difference between "illness" and "disease", doctor Mike?🤔
