The Peter Pan Problem

  • This was said to be one of the biggest mistakes WED made when creating Peter Pan’s Flight 🙈
Though the Fantasyland dark rides were a hit from the beginning of Disneyland in 1955, they realized immediately that they didn’t have enough capacity. It wasn’t until the 1964 New York World’s Fair (and the prodding of Nunis, aka “Hop-a-long Capacity”) that Disney finally found methods for moving more people through an attraction per hour.
But even with many upgrades in the 1983 Fantasyland remodel, Peter Pan’s flight in Disneyland (as well as the one in Walt Disney World) still suffers from extremely low capacity. That is why the line is always so long, because it’s a slow loading, low-capacity attraction. Some have said the wait is not worth it to a 2.25-3min ride (depending on the version you are on), but for many this attraction is a must-do in the Disney parks.
There’s a significance there, in the wait. We continue to join the queue, though this ride is one of the shortest rides in duration of all the Disney attractions. Maybe it’s because the idea that we don’t have to grow up is a hope we hold close, even for two and a half minutes at a time. Or maybe we all just want to be able to fly, even for a moment, away to our own Neverlands 💜
“We were talking about what things we could use for Fantasyland in some of the rides. And we kidded about Peter Pan. ‘We could do a Peter Pan fly-through.’ While Walt was gone, Bill made a little schematic birds-eye view of where you would go, and that became the ride.” - Richard Irvine

This ride is so popular I don’t know why Disney doesn’t make an other ride with the same ride system. Theme it to Mary Poppins. There are 2 dumbos, as well as Magic Carpet so two similar rides wouldn’t be a problem.

That ride is weirdly one of the most memorable moments I have from all park visits I had as a child, even though I only rode it maybe once. I leaned over the edge and looked down, and I remember thinking "We're so high up! Wait, no we're not, but it looks like we are, so maybe we really are?" It's also a memory of my Mom and Dad having a good day together.

Yeah Walt never meant for it to be a museum, more like a living organism that changes and grows with time. He once said the storybookland canal boats was just a temporary little ride until they could get something better.

I keep reminding myself of that when I mourn Maelstrom but I will never forgive The Great Movie Ride being replaced with what, in my view, is a lack-luster ride (though it has a great story). It isn't a roller coaster unless it can go up and down inclines. And honestly, it was such a unique attraction that was replaced with a common attraction.

The first year Disney World was opened I got to go. To ride each ride you had to pay a certain number of tickets, but we didn't have enough money to buy a lot of them, so I savored each moment on the rides, thoroughly captivated. On the Peter Pan ride, the ship was a wonder and I didn't mind at all when it paused at the scene where Capt. Hook balanced atop the crocodile jaws. As Hook did splits, we waited. And waited. Our ship was at the top of the up and down cycle. Finally, someone came with a ladder and helped us down. As we walked through the rest of the ride and exited, we were given a long, long string of tickets, maybe even more than we started the day with! Best Disney moment in my past 50 years!

@@SmallSpoonBrigade They obviously make more money from people bying all day passes, and selling more passes than they can really accomodate.
You pay for a full day of queueing, and you might get 10 minutes of ride for your money.
Imagine if they guaranteed a maximum queue time of ten minutes at every ride? The would have to reduce the number of visitors significantly.
And then there is food, if you can ride instead of queue, they sell less food, You might just stay there for 3-4 hours until you fell done and then leave and eat somewhere else.

I am saddened for those who have never experienced that true Disney magic as a child, particularly on this ride, and at a short wait time to where one could ride again within the hour. I was blessed with so many magical years. Thanks Grandparents, Parents, Walt, and all those who designed and built Disneyland.

    • @57thorns
      @57thorns 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

The problem here is greed. They could allow less people in, and instead have witing lists for the tickets. Then people would complain about the tickets not being available.
Or they could just raise ticket prices to compensate, as they are already doing with "express passes".

If they had made the ride longer, they could’ve accommodated more guests, and thus shortened the lines.

Not by much if there is any improvement, unfortunately. The ride itself is pretty slow, so the queue is still going to move pretty slowly due to how few people are still going to get on and off and at the rate that the ride moves

    • @matter9

A longer ride would make line wait times worse. Ride length is independent of throughput. More seats per gondola/ship thing, or more gondolas would help. A longer ride with all else being equal would make the problem worse. The only thing that would change is retrospect feelings as to whether the ride was worth the wait.

The Peter Pan queue is brutal: No shade, cramped, winding, boring, no storytelling, no distractions, ride frequently pauses due to loading/unloading trouble, lots of line-cutting, and torture for fidgety little ones (and their parents) to endure. Love the ride but I won’t attempt it if the wait is more than 30min, and that’s still crazy lopsided when comparing ride vs wait. Monsters Inc. has nearly the exact same issues.

First time I ever went to Disney, back in the 80s, this Peter Pan ride was almost empty so I went on it. I was maybe 11, and I LOVED this ride so much, I kept going on it about ten times. Flying above the town and through the bedroom was so much fun!

Next to ‘Pirates’ its one of my favorites. As a 17 year old I flew on a PanAm 747 from LA to London, looking down B4 landing the view was reminiscent of the Disney attraction…….magical!!

I’ve been going on Peter Pan’s flight since I was old enough to remember it. There’s something so magical about flying around Neverland in a pirate ship, and the stories I have about it make it all the more precious. When I was maybe four, the ride stopped, and I was absolutely *terrified* that the animatronics would attack me, and every time my mom tried to talk, I would shush her, because she was going to wake them up!
And because I have that memory, the ride means that much more to me

I’ve been to Disney World several times over the years and Peter Pan’s Flight has always been the one ride that I go on every single time. I can’t express how much I love this ride. It’s gone through changes over the years but I still love it was much today as I did over 40 years ago. They’ve gotten rid of Mickey’s house, the original Snow White ride, and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and it didn’t bother me but if Peter Pan’s Flight ever goes away I just don’t think I’d be able to ever go back.

When my girlfriend (now wife) and I went to Disney World, Peter Pan's Flight experienced some kind of malfunction while we were waiting in line, which added about an hour and a half to the wait-time. On the upside, we were in the air conditioning the whole time, which was a good break from the July heat and humidity outside.

This ride is one of my earliest childhood memories when I was 4. I couldn't find the tracks under the ship and couldn't figure out how the ride worked and it made it feel like real magic to me. 🥰
(I also got lost in the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse because I had seen that movie so many times and couldn't believe that it was real or that I was actually there. My Dad let go of my hand for a moment and I wandered off to inspect things! I don't remember being lost, but I do remember the awe and joy of seeing the treehouse!)
Disney World at 4 really was so magical.

The author of Peter Pan gave the copyright to a children’s hospital in London called Great Ormond Street Hospital
That copyright has been changed so that it will never expire and sick children in the UK will continue to benefit from Peter Pan
Unfortunately you only have to comply with the copyright if you live in the UK
I think it would be great PR for Disney to give any profits made from Peter Pan to the hospital but let’s be honest, they wouldn’t do that unless they legally had to
