Burton made this towering speech on November 20, 1983. At the time, he had been suffering from cirrhosis and kidney disease for two years, and from constant and severe neck pain for much longer. He would be dead within a year. To pull this off was sheer mastery.

I was in the audience that night. I toured with Frank Sinatra for almost 14 years as his opening act and was with him for about for about a year at that time. Frank invited me and my then wife to the event. In those 14 years there were take away moments just to numerous to count.This night stands out as one I knew I would never forget. In this room were the biggest stars in Hollywood who I had seen so many times in movies as a little boy growing up in Harvey, Illinois. When Richard Burton began to speak with that magnificent tone of voice a hush came over the room and many were brought to tears because of the content and delivery but also because they had been blessed by Frank's benevolence as well. Time and time again I witnessed his acts of kindness. As I have said so many times "Frank Sinatra wasn't a Saint but he sure did some saintly things" Rest in Peace dear friend. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of you.

It's not just the mesmerising voice, it's the beautiful choice of words, the timing, the pauses, the intensity of the presentation. Perfect in every way. Two great men.

How wonderful it is to hear someone speak so eloquently and powerfully....there are some great speeches on TH-cam...Barack Obama never disappoints, G.W. Bush's eulogy for his father is superb. What I find interesting in Richard Burton's speech is that he mentions Sinatra not being able to get work, which could have been a mistake, but wasn't, because it re-emphasised the working class roots of a man who had made his money and spread his wealth to those that were struggling.....

I could listen to Richard Burton’s superb diction all day. This was a tour de force of a speech that focused more on Frank Sinatra’s generosity and not his artistry. Sublime!

@cistv brown Let's use 1970 as a benchmark for his last hit. He was 55 at that time. Not many singers maintain their voices and popularity for that long. I made the mistake of believing his greatest hits were his greatest vocal performances. Definitely not. What'll I do, I'm a Fool to Want You, The Summer Knows, Hello Young Lovers, September Song, I Think of You. Dr. Martin Luther King wept during Sinatra's VC of Ol Man River. If you don't like him or his singing then you of course are entitled to your opinion. Avg he was not.
@cisty brown Better add to your list. When he broke through in the 40's he was the Presley or Beatles of the time. He was a recording star, concert and nightclub performer, actor, movie star, television performer and talk show host. There wasn't much in entertainment that he couldn't do.

Anyone who hasn't already heard it, check out Richard Burton reading Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas. It's amazing, the fact that it's a Welshmen reading a Welsh poet adds to it for sure.
The Welsh have the greatest voices: Burton, Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Griffith, Michael Sheen, Bryn Terfel, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones.
Not sure there has ever been a more spectacular tribute to anyone, ever.
Oh yes there has, unless it all hangs on what you mean by "spectacular". Aside from thousands of unheard eulogies, the elegies of certain great poets are more memorable to me than this - interesting though it is to see for the first time.

By some unfathomable coincidence I have manage to miss this speech until today. Today, I needed my spirit lifted, today I felt so very low, today I felt so so tired, and then this; this magnificent wordsmith filled me with humility, restored my spirit with deep joy, that one man can speak with such command about his dear friend has moved me in a way beyond explanation.
What a speaker with a voice that is captivating. Frank looked moved by Richard's words and delivery.
Richard Burton was one of the finest actors ever. From "Cleopatra", to "Taming of the Shrew", "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf" and "Becket", he filled the screen with his brilliance. That voice was like a magnet. This brilliant actor was nominated 6 times I think and never won. It's a real crime when you lose to John Wayne !

She was such an icon and around the time of Cleopatra i think lots of guys thought lucky Richard that she was his wife. Yes, he had that amazing voice in movies and speeches such as this.

Aa a 74 yo and having listened to this for my first time It truly left a tear in my eye for a speech given by someone so worthy to someone worthy of every word. Bless you both
Jerry Lewis is on record as saying, that Frank Sinatra would call friends like Dean, Judy and Sammy etc...and go to hospices, children's homes and hospitals on Christmas day to entertain patients...without any cameras or media there. He did it out of the goodness in his heart not for fame or kudos. David Niven is also on record in his book saying Sinatra helped him out in a huge way, and it wasn't financial. Frank also paid Lee J Cobb's medical bills even though they weren't close friends. When Cobb asked why? Sinatra replied, "because I like your work". Frank had power and influence that even helped get JFK elected as President, he had his flaws no doubt, but his selflessness and generosity knew no bounds. Great and fitting speech by Richard Burton.

When Sammy Davis Jr lost an eye in an auto accident, his Friend, Mr Sinatra paid his medical bills and supported his return to performing and made sure that he was given every accomodation to perform and stay in Las Vegas hotels despite their prior policies with black performers.
He was a Giant of a proponent for equal/civil rights for All Peoples and a Tremendous supporter, friend of the Jewish people and of Israel.

Frank Sinatra in his career raised more money ..over a BILLION dollars in today's money...and paid the bills for more famous people and just plain people.....than any other entertainer in history....Sinatra also paid ALL expenses out of his pocket when he performed for charity and did his world charity tours.....and he paid far more than he had to .....

These were the great men of great days
Two fella’s from the streets who’ve got more brains and class than any stuffed shirt ever had.
Two frauds pretending tough guys, more like. One a has been actor turned alcoholic, the other one a has beeen crooner turned a has been bore.
I am proud to say my father was a school boy friend of Richard Burton, he was an outstanding actor, narrator and a wonderful wonderful human being. There are certain people in life who just breeze along , they are able to do a multitude of things with their life and are accomplished at many many things. Richard was a true genius , a gentleman who loved what he did and boy did he do it well. He was from a different generation, almost old before his time but the one thing with Richard was as my Dad said he never forgot where he came from, he was proud of where he grew up but also grateful for the upbringing.
These so called movie stars of today need to look at these old films in black and white and with their wonky sets and bad lighting and realise the one thing they could do was act, tell the story bring it to life. There will NEVER be a generation of actors like these greats who have died and that is sad, so so sad.
Seems like it was always better in the old days Hanks not bad De niro,, Pacino. Nicholson, Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio to name a few

Every once in a while I replay this moving tribute to Mr. Sinatra by Mr. Burton. Each man had voices so distinctive you could never mistake who they were. The diction, the beautiful vocabulary and the timber of Burton’s voice is deeply moving, a reminder of a time when Hollywood had some class. And say what you will about Sinatra…for his legendary charity and anonymous generosity this tribute was well deserved and no one could have delivered it with more dignity and elegance than Richard Burton.

I would have Burton Taught in all UK schools, I'm English and have always been a pains to point out his Welshness! He was a one off.
Years ago , in the mid 90's , I was down on my luck. Homeless in Santa Monica called. There was a priest, father Chase that came out to the beach ⛱ every Sunday and he and his friends would serve a terrific meal. And with the meal he gave everyone a dollar, sometimes $5 or $10 dollars. And one day I asked him where the food and money came from . And he told me frank Sinatra had an account set up specifically for that reason. I miss you ole blue eyes, mr anonymous 💙.

My way is a song about Frank Sinatra - each lyric and each note is describing Frank's life...he sings it with the passion and emotion as though he is showing us his soul. No one can sing this song like him, he owns this song..he lived this song. This is his legacy. This is his story.

This is one of the greatest speeches I have ever heard in my life! Richard really out did himself . Having had the rare privilege by accident to have met Mr Sinatra he was kind and gentle greeting everyone in the room one by one. He didn’t have to but he did. I remember reading Lee J Cobb had heart surgery Sinatra paid the bill.
Lee Remick husband had heart surgery she went to pay the bill.
It had already been paid by Sinatra.
Lee Remick said years later at the time she didn't know Sinatra and up till that point she had never worked with him till many years later.

Gene Shallit while interviewing Burton said that people would pay to hear Burton read the phone book. He then handed Burton a phone book. He opened the phone book an read, “Johnson, Phillip, R.”

To think that this superb actor never won an Oscar is one of the prime reasons why this 64 year old American stopped watching the so-called Academy Awards twenty years ago! Richard Burton did not even get an honorary one!

An Oscar or 100 for that matter, would be a scant reward for Burton's talent. The Oscar is so neneath his stature, a worthless trinket at best.

I had the good fortune in 1983 to meet Ella Fritzgerald on Miami Beach one New Year's Eve.... she was playing with a combo in a small hotel on Ocean Drive.
She appeared to be in her mid70s. During her break, over coffee we talked about music.
I asked her who was her favorite male singer. She instantly replied .. " Frank Sinatra " !!
She also said they dated for many years and would even go to the Opera together in NY on Saturdays! I got to know that their love for music and respect for each others talents was immeasurable!! True Story!!!
As tributes go, this has to rank among the best. No notes, and with that richly toned voice that makes him instantly recognizable, that was a perfect delivery.

I feel blessed to have grown up at a time when you had great entertainers like Sinatra, and Burton still showcasing their abundance of talent…side note, I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr.Sinatra when he appeared on the Arsenal Hall show with Joe Piscipo. 🎙️🙏🏾🕊️🕊️

A speech for all eternity to whom an anonymous man receives such high praises is truly remarkable. MR. BURTON's VOICE is no match. Unequalled at any level. Such class such fineness.
Both Frank and Richard are so missed. I'm glad I had the privilege of living in their era even though it was far too short.
