- Ernie shows off The Sunbum, all 40-feet of it, from front to back. It's a customized Prevost Bus with every comfort of home, including a marble staircase at the entryway. The banks of lights, gauges and video monitor resemble the captain's deck on Star Trek. Customized in southwest style, The Sunbum has leather couches, a full-sized refrigerator, and a Tiffany-like lamp. The bathroom shower has frosted glass with the initials "T, E, and you know the rest!" Hint: Tova is Ernie's wife.
This was published about 6 months before his death. Ernie was a great guy and a great character actor. They just don't make them like Ernie any more. RIP Old Friend!
When was this filmed? Seems like it was early 2000’s just looking at the cell phone
I remember meeting Mr. Borgnine back around 1976 when I was a kid. He was in Playa del Rey, CA filming Future Cop. There were a bunch of kids wanting his autograph. I came up and asked, "May I please have your autograph?" Mr. Borgnine looked at me with a big smile and said, "That's the way to do it!" He right away signed an autograph for me. I've never forgotten how kind he was.
Well, he is on heaven now.
I grew up in Playa Del Rey in the 60's and 70's. My God father looked so much like Earnest and every time I saw him on tv he reminded me of him.

Ernie looked great for 95. He was certainly proud of his vehicle, i am glad he enjoyed it to the very end. He was a wonderful actor and was in many classic motion pictures.

I remember seeing a show where he was being pranked and he arrived home to find his house wrapped in a huge fumigation tent. He enquired politely what was going on and was told his house was infested with an insect that had to be eradicated before it spread in the US. He then asked how long before he could get back inside his home and was told a few days. Instead of going into" the don't you know who I am" or having a tantrum he simply said I suppose we can go and stay in a hotel for a few days. It was a show that preyed on people acting badly in a stressful situation, it flopped with Ernie as he was so polite, and understanding and remained calm and reasonable the whole time.

Yes I have seen Ernie in so may movies ,acting the bad guy it would be strange to me to see him calm. I would be disappointed not seeing him turn that character of the wild guy . ( Like his part in " Bad Day at Black Rock")

What a lovely man. No airs and graces, just sharing the bus he loves with those of us who may be interested.
I sat next to him in a restaurant in the mid90’s. He was traveling in his bus, passing through and stopping at an old favorite place of his. I opted this remarkably engaging man chatting up the wait staff. I didn’t realize who he was at first and the. saw that big gap toothed smile and a waiter asking him to sign a menu and put it together. He just had phenomenal positive energy and presence. Once in a while you encounter someone with that bright inner light and Mr. Borgnine was surely one of those.
I loved Ernie since I was a kid. I was devastated when he passed. Actors today aren’t made like this anymore. RIP.

My grandfather told me stories about hanging out with ernest in the 40,s when he was in the service and would get leave, he said ernest was one of the most down home people he ever met and that he never got angry about being approached by fans. Truly a lost breed , if everyone was like ernest the world would be a much better place, r.i.p.sir, salute 🇱🇷👨✈️

Ernest Borgnine was a tremendously talented actor who is sadly missed after his passing. I loved him in everything he was in, whether television or film. Today’s actors have nothing on him. Ernest outclassed and out acted them all.
I cherish my memories of knowing Ernie and of traveling with him. Such a fun, upbeat guy. He was always so kind to me and to everyone

i remember way back watching an art movie about 911- it was film made from segments about people experiencing 911 when his episode came on i remember being suprised that he was still alive-that was around 2005 or so- then i cried because his performance was so touching

Great guy. I miss him. One of the few actors who could play funny or dark characters and both convincingly.
My wife & I met him in the General Jackson Showboat in Nashville, TN. He was with George Lindsey(Goober), they both were very kind & down to earth. I know it must be hard to be famous like that & go out somewhere always knowing that people will notice you & want an autograph or a picture with you. I just told them both thanks & shook their hands. Really enjoyed this video. Just nice to see them both doing well back then. Nowadays so many stars seem to be out of touch with the world around them.

@Josh - I see no reason why he might not have been a nice guy. I worked in the audio and video recording industry. Ive worked with many more famous musicians and actors than most people. Many of them are nice. None of them were down to earth. They have no idea what life is like for the little guy. They only know they would pay any price to have to avoid returning to living an ordinary middle class life.
John Parker he was a veteran meaning he probably worked pretty hard in his old days. With that I think it’s safe to assume that he knows what it’s like to put hard work in and understands both worlds. In general I’d say he’s probably the one of the most down to earth guys I’ve ever seen.
Mr. Borgnine reminds me of my father inlaw. He was a WW 2 navy vet, and loved being in the navy. Down to Earth loved his cars. He also loved driving and traveling. He wasn't afraid of trying new things and lived his life to the fullest. Many of these guys have passed away and I miss the greatest generation. We could use more guys like this today.

Ernest has always appeared to me as a good guy. In the few interviews he's done and one the silver screen. Not the typical Hollywood snob. Like Tom Selleck. They should happen to be actors and in show biz. :) Plus Ernest and his wife have to mix with "regular folk" driving across the country. Wouldn't be doing this if they weren't comfortable or Hollywood snobs.
as i said in another reply here, another celeb. my gordon lightfoot, i met three times after concerts here in knox tn. hje remembgered me asked about how my father was doing, etc, one im surprised he rememebred me, and 2 remembered the conversation we had after the first time i met him after a show almost 7 years previously. people like this were cut from a differnet cloth than many others were

He was pretty robust for an 80 year old. Good genes, lived to 95.
He also road horses like he was doing the wild bunch movie again. Icon.
He passed away on July 8th, 2012 at age 95. Not sure when this video was shot but it says January 21, 2012. Like to think he was driving his rig at 95! RIP

All my tough guy heroes sadly have passed away.As of writing this Clint Eastwood is the only one left.Feel blessed to have grown up as a kid back in the 70s watching guys such as Ernest Borgnine wreck havoc on the big screen in their prime.Feel even luckier to be able to see Ernest on you tube being a regular,cool down to earth guy.

I recall when he was on TCM being interviewed by Robert Osbourne. He was so open,engaging,with a great memory and told some really interesting stories. One of a kind for sure. He never retired and seemed to be always busy. RiP
Biggest star in the world, and he is out there on his own, on the road, just doing it by himself. No driver, no retinue, just him. He had to be competent to drive that thing, and the little touches - like putting the mats down on the marble so as not to wear them down - are classic practical stuff. Very cool video.

Over the years I have had a growing appreciation of Ernest Borgnine. I loved his small role in R.E.D. Great guy!
I've been playing these videos of Borgnine on the road, over and over again. His voice is comforting to me. I grew up watching his films, as I did Gene Hackman's, Clint Eastwoods, etc etc. I miss those days and those that were there then. Watching these Borgnine videos feels the same as watching home videos made by my parents so many, many years ago. Too much change.
He was 95 years old in this video, still stomping around and living it to the fullest. Died six months later, but God bless him.

Me and 2 of my friends stopped at that bar back in '78-79 when we were stationed at Elmendorf after a day of fishing. There was a French horn kind of looking thing by a window and friends told me that if you blew it, quail would come out for a free handout. I blew the horn....getting a face full of sawdust! Yeah, it was a gag the owner has played or seen played on more than one visitor.

My uncle got to meet Ernie back in the early 80's,my uncle owned a optical eyecare center in Soldotna , Alaska.When Ernie was in Alaska on a fishing trip in Soldotna he stopped in my uncle eyecare center to have his glasses repaired.I was a teenager then i thought it was cool he got to meet Ernie.

I liked Ernie since in the 50's when I was a young man. The movies that I saw, impressed me as his personality came through and he was indeed of good personality and character. Memories of a great actor and a friendly nice fellow.

I've always loved Ernest Borgnine. Such a sweet guy, not a pretension in sight. He was true Hollywood royalty, unlike these mooks they're subjecting the viewing public with today. But the best thing about him is that he never acted like Hollywood royalty.
