I could listen to Otto for hours. I really like the professionalism, transparency about the product and amazing engineering and technology that goes behind their speakers. I’ve never considered Dynaudio before, but I’m definitely going to pay attention now.

I appreciate the discussion about measurements vs. sound quality. It's good to hear him emphasize the importance of the human element in establishing what the final speaker design should be rather than just going by machine measurements.
I think it's a good approach that a lot is still produced by Dynaudio itself or in Denmark. I wish Dynaudio continued success.

I’ve had Focus 30’s for a month and love them. I was totally impressed with the sound, then recently optimised them with Dirac Live, they sound even better now.
Bought few months ago the Dynaudio contour and……….. amazing!!!! Makes me very proud to be the owner of it! Lovely video with factory views.

I was introduced to Dynaudio speakers over 20 years ago and at the time the dealer told me that B&W would not allow their speakers to be sold In the same shop as Dynaudio because the competition was too tough.
I ended up with a pair of Countour 3.3 speakers which, although not pretty, sounded awesome. They were even sold at half price as the cabinet was not ‘perfect’. They remained in my hi-Fi system for a long time and now sit as the front speakers in my surround system - usurped in my hi-fi by a pair of Kef Reference 205/2s. I can’t see me ever getting rid of the Dynaudio’s unless I become seriously rich.

Great video Terry having owned a set of confidence C4's and having Dynaudio in my car I am very much a fan of this company. Their Sonic signature as a loudspeaker manufacturer is very organic with a believable presentation that l love.👍🙂🎧
Love it love it love it! I have always been a big Dynaudio fan with a set of Excite front and surround and Contour center. They are amazing. Lacking some bass at times but I fixed that by adding REL S510. Thank you for all that you do. Yet another great video!

Excellent vid Terry. I'm a big Dynaudio fan (passive) so this was great stuff. Detailed and interesting. The issue of how measurements and construction correlate with listening is clearly a big topic.

Terry ;) Nice video, great lightning, sound and interview. But, and there is a but... the sound mix is not good, the level of the music is way too loud. I have to turn the audio up and down when the music starts or ends... This is only meant as good input from a Dynaudio and Dirac lover (from Denmark BTW), and also a sound engineer and Hi-Fi critic. Keep up the good work. ;)
I think I'd like to own a speaker or Amplifier from every company you have reviewed so far. I'll say that's not possible . But I'd also say it's because you do such a great job of high lighting the quality of those products. Dynaudio has always been on my radar. Their speakers are beautiful! So, thank you for your work & giving me something to look forward to!
Currently running the Focus 20XD with a rel t7x sub. Stream from a bluesound node. I do room eq with umik1 and REW. Sounds amazing :) The sub really opens up the speakers.
Got them used for 1000usd including stands and hub. Only 3 years old -from 2019.
Now i have a complete 'high-end' system with sub and room eq for under 2500usd. Would love to hear how the new line compare the older models :) Dynaudio makes a bargain on the used market!

I like the point about measurements he made, even though a speaker may measure better on a graph, it's more important to chose what peaks and troughs are less salient to the human ear.

Great video. Thanks Terry. The impressive testing system in Jupiter is absolutely an important (and efficient) part of speaker tuning, but human ears are always the most important. Sometimes the numbers don't translate to good performance.
I had many Dynaudio's. The last pair was a C2. Very nice at that time. But i bought some actives from another brand. Still have them. When i have the time and maybe the money, i would consider Dynaudio's active.
The BM6A model (mixing) is 25 years old now, and still on the market. That says a lot about the quality. The new LYDs are different animals - class d amplification and way higher crossover frequency (LYD 7 4300Hz vs.BM6A 2200Hz). I have not heard the LYD's though.
Completely random (interesting) fact. Lyd is the Danish word for sound.
awesome video, def made me more interested in demoing a few models from them. I do really wish he would have shown the difference in the levels of tweeters, because they all look so similar.
They do look similar, because the dome itself - the part I am holding up in the video - is actually exactly the same in all our hifi and pro speakers, except that they are sorted by performance so the more expensive models have the most linear domes. Except for this, the short story is:
Emit/Evoke/Focus uses Cerotar tweeter with Ferrite magnet (Focus uses Ferrite because higher sensitivity is not an advantage in active speakers). Emit is assembled in China but using the same parts, including the soft dome manufactured in Denmark.
Contour i uses Esotar 2i tweeter with neodymium magnet
Confidence/Heritage Special uses Esotar3 tweeter with stronger neodymium magnet and larger aluminium rear chamber.
Special Forty uses a custom variant without the Hexis inner-dome and custom yoke.
There are other minor differences, but this is the broad overview.
Great interview. A must for anyone interested in audio, especially when going out to get a pair of loudspeakers for the first time.

Wow, fantastic video Terry! I learnt more about Dynaudio in this video than any other I have watched. I’ve been viewing a lot of stuff as I have just recently bought some Confidence 20 speakers which I am completely delighted with in my small room 😀
I wish Dynaudio would have powered center channels…that would enable to set up a powered 5.1 home theater system
I have Audiance 75s which are very effective for my age related deafness.
When their raw drivers were available, I built many pairs employing 1st order filter networks. Today, Mr Skaaning's, Audio Technology DK drivers the newer iteration, expensive, but worth it.
I feel very lucky as an amateur to have Dyn contours.. I have never found the end of them… from the clearest most delicate notes., to a base seems as deep as a sub.., and never booming or without definition…

i love my evoke 20, for classical musical you can hear the room sometimes, quite realistic and precise. What model should i upgrade too from here? since there are a bit too bassy for a medium sized apartment living room.

I've had Confidence C2 with Naim in tha past and full set of Lyngdorf... are looking for my "final set" 😇 considering Confidence 30 / Diablo 300 or the much less expensive Focus 50 as the more space saving and adjustable solution. In fact I do consider Focus 30 as my living room is "only" 30m2 Any thoughts on that? Thanks.
Glassfiber aluminum voice coil former Where the voice coil shorted on the aluminium voice coil. I am very surprised by the difference.
I own Dynaudio DM 3/7 not in production anymore I have them for a while and dont see any reason for a change .They match very well with my NAD C-388 as this amp has plenty of power because this speaker need power to shine.

Hi Larry. This question is always slightly complicated to answer, as it depends how you define where a product is "manufactured"... We follow the official guidelines (of course), which means that the "Made in..." on the back of the speaker will tell you where the final assembly is made. Currently all Pro speakers and all hifi speakers except Emit and Evoke are exclusively manufactured in Denmark. Evoke has been assembled in both Denmark and China, with exactly the same components including all drivers manufactured in Denmark. Emit is assembled in China with several components sourced in Europe, including the soft dome manufactured in Denmark.
A unique feature of Focus is that the electronics module, including mounting the components on the mainboard, is manufactured exclusively in Denmark, less than 100 km from our own factory.

Terry I currently own Kef R3 paired with Rotel 1592 integrated amplifier (400W /2 power) and two Martin Logan Dynamo 800 Subs. I love the sound of the R3 but have always wanted to upgrade to KEF R11. Ive been offered Bowers and Wilkins 804 D3 for less than a pair of KEF R11 (Less than KEF R11 sale price open box.) I am not familiar with Bowers sound, I've owned KEF LS50 and upgraded KEF R3. My plan was to upgrade to R3 Meta when released, or go bigger with a good deal on KEF R11.
I know from your videos you are very familiar with KEF and you also have lots of experience with Bowers and Wilkins.
Whats your take taking into account my amplification?
Music listening all digital BlueSound node with separate DAC . Room, untreated normal mid size living room- TV is also connected to amplifier as a source.
RS45 if I may add. I had the K-R3 as well. Because you have a Rotel amp. These can become a bit forward or bright. Defiantly consider a set of dyns also Monitor Audio will match you amp very well. B&W is not a good sound. My opinion. If you want a smother amp then the Rotel. I mean warner and more reveling. Look at Rega. They are awesome.
The eddy current damping when using an aluminium voice coil former is easily solved. All you have to do is to have a longitudinal gap the the former to stop eddy currents from flowing in the coil former. Without the gap the aluminium former acts like a shorted turn in the voice coil. Using an aluminium voice coil former with a longitudinal gap allows much greater cooling of the voice coil and much higher power handling capacity. There are two British speaker companies that use aluminium voice coil formers to vastly increase power handling. I am astonished that the Dynaudio designer hasn't thought of this simple solution.
Because the bigger the gap, the less detail and nuance. You can buy large gap speakers and hear the mush.
Hi Jim. Thank you for your comment. As I mention in the interview, there are ways to design around it. We have used aluminium formers for 40+ years, we do know how they work 😊 There are other material options as well, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The eddy current demonstration is simply meant as a visual demonstration that each element of a driver has an impact on the whole. Not to say that one material is always better no matter what. Hence the talk about “balance”.
Hi Jim. I just re-read your comment, and I think I didn't understand you correctly the first time around, so let me clarify: The aluminium former I used in the demonstration DOES have this gap. I don't think I can upload images here, but I will be happy to share a picture of the inside of the former 🙂 The gap decreases the eddy currents, but does not remove them.

With all those capability its surprising the Special 40 was so messed up if you look at the GR-Research upgrade video to fix that Woofer ringing at 1100 Hz
I think its naive to think that a company making speakers for a high % of studios around the world and with the most advanced measuring systems in the world didnt know and make a decision about that. Not everything you see in measurements is audible so priorities are taken into account as Dynaudio explain in the video.
Also its not an upgrade if you change things, if you change the intended sound of the speakers and not upgrade which would be a better version of the same thing. If you change the freq respsonse you change the speakers intended sound - hence the subjective aspect mentioned.
For the measurements if you look at the before horizontal off axis response its very uniform for the speakers power response the more off axis you go, the after is not, it changes a lot off axis. That was likely not Dynaudios goal, the upgrade maybe improves the vertical but makes the horizontal worse. I would bet Dynaduio would say horizontal matters more than vertical in the high frequencies as the height is more fixed in setup than how off axis you will listen which changes for every listener.
The Spectral decay graphs have different parameters, the before has a tighter time of 3.5ms the after 4ms which of course changes how the graph looks. Still there is a 1000hz reduction of a few ms but how audible is that reduction or the ringing in the first place?
Also $500 more production cost means approx $1500 more retail cost that is never mentioned and for how much sonic gain that has to be calculated as well by Dynaudio to hit the price point.
@@PursuitPerfectSystem thanks for taking the time for such a lengthy and well thought out response. To be fair to Danny, while he may not have mentioned it this time he does often refer to the four or five fold ratio of production cost to retail price and why it’s easer for owners to DIY the parts quality upgrades than exprct the manufacturer to use premium parts and still hit a price point. And the only reason he had the speakers was because an owner sent them in because they weren’t totally happy with the sound. If you look at the driver responses they were messed up and that 1kHz resonance is most certainly audible being in the upper vocal range. (at 12:54 in yr video he talks about them avoiding resonances but they missed the goal on the 40, clearly). I agree Dynaudios measurement rig is outstanding and it’s clear they made a decision on what to let out the door and at least it wasn’t as bad as the Klipsch’s that Danny gets to fix or some of the B&W’s for that matter. If you’re ever in Texas you should go see him especially after he put a call out to online reviewers. Meanwhile I can dream of replacing my Linn Keltiks with the new Linn 360’s. And now I subscribed to yr channel
Thanks for the well thought out response, but its important to remember Danny is only "fixing" the speakers in his eyes, what he is actually doing is changing them in ways to how he thinks they should be. If that is what someone prefers that is fine but the definition of fix I think is very loose. Companies make speakers in a certain way to sound a certain way, Danny is changing them to how he thinks they should sound and really its done to sell his products, aways remember that too
@@PursuitPerfectSystem As a designer he believes the speaker should be accurate and that means having a flat response as a measaure of accuracy and anything else added by the speaker is coloration / distortion if its not part of the input signal. as a committed Linnie I would agree with that. No manufacturer is infallible or gets things rigt every time (even Linn), but having watched all his videos several times and all the manufacturers and models going across his workbench, it becomes clear that drivers summing in phase perform better and more consistently ad if replacing cheapo crossover parts with better parts improves clarity then you get a better speaker than the manufacturer was able to put out at the price point. Now, DIY is not for everyone (certainly not my B&W 804 owning mate in London) and in that regard I believe Danny performs a valuable service by supporting and educating a DIY community. and if the fix / upgrade path gets people to later buy his kits... then more power to him. I envy your visit to Denmark, and hope to do the Linn factory tour sometime soon if i can just get over to Glasgow.
If you get the chance speak to some speaker designers a flat on axis frequency response is not their target because that is not what you listen to, its also not "accurate" either because of how the human ear works . Most designers look at the power response and how consistent the behaviour is off axis as that is what you hear. Dynaudio for example concentrate on what they call the "listening window", Danny didn't mention that as he did not think to contact them and ask them, he knows better of course.
I am all for educating people but when that education is followed by a product to be sold with never any mention of before and after sound quality its not as clean cut as it should be.
Danny from GR-Reseach probably hates this interviewee for saying measurments can be perfect and the speaker still sound bad. Its all about the balance not about 1 aspect. That is near a Universal Truth even a Veteran designer can fail to follow.
I appreciate the video. This has nothing to do with you in regards of my opinion, but the factory visit did not impress me. It was nothing to do with your side of it. It’s what they didn’t really show you. Or did not allow in your video with the Bowers factory tour they really were in-depth and I can respect that obviously they’re a trade secrets you don’t wanna reveal to your competitors, but it was almost more than interviews in a warehouse tour again, I appreciate your work, and this is not a critique to you directly. This is more of a critique to the company
There was some things I couldnt shoot video of and some that wasn't happening because of the time of year. But I shot an hour of factory production video so could have shown loads but I felt the interview was more interesting than someone screwing in screws or hand manufacturing drivers in similar ways. I put the video together and I thought the balance of info to factory was good. What I didnt get much video of was fully produced speakers, I didnt think to which is a shame as some of the larger Dynaudio speakers are cool. Criticism taken on board, I know its not of me, but really it is but I am not offended by your comments
I listened to Focus speaker here in Sweden , they don't sound good , not at all audiophile , I would say it sound like mid-Fi ,
it hade a lot distortion , not any soundstage, sorry guys .class D is not my amplifier
Thats totally the opposite of how they sound and how they have been designed. Heard all of them now in several different rooms its the same for all the models. Their sound stage is excellent
@@PursuitPerfectSystem well I don't trust what manufacture to try or marketing their stuff , I trust my ear , not all of model sound good , in my ear model Heritage Special passive speaker sound good , which i run with my class A amplifier.
