I remember making these in my first domestic science class. Yes that’s what it was called in those days. In my school we had a two storey science block that contained two fully furnished one bedroom flats. We learned how to budget,shop,cook,clean,wash and iron. We also leaned how to sew including make do and mend. We where also taught personal hygiene and it didn’t matter how much the clothes cost you where wearing as long as they were clean, pressed and your shoes polished. It’s what was called putting your best foot forward. It really was the first steps into adulthood. I taught my children these things from a early age and they have done well.
I haven’t made these for many years…back in the day my granddaughter used to “help” make them with me. We would stand the mixing bowl in the sink and let her mix - we used a chair for her to stand on. My husband would nip outside and film her through the kitchen window. A mini “Mary Berry”. Happy days…🏴🇬🇧
@@puppy1584, there's "kits" that have cables to connect your old device to your computer. It also has software that records the "film" to your hard drive as you play the "movie". Don't be discouraged if the kit doesn't go directly to your camera... You may know of an intermediate step that will get you there... Maybe camera to VCR to kit. There are services that do this for you, especially if the "film" isn't playable. But it's fun to watch the movie during the transfer.

Mom used to make these every Sunday morning to go along with chicken soup lunch. We all loved them, especially dad. He always had four. Dad and I loved butter so much the comment always was, "Do you have enough biscuit for the butter. Mom preferred raspberry jam. I can smell them now. Dad was born in Tayport, Scotland. Memories or what ! I can remember 60 years ago coming home from a day in the park to the wonderful aroma coming from the kitchen knowing my Mum had made a batch of rock cakes and having to wait patiently or maybe not so patiently for them to cool down. Thanks Rik for a glimpse of happy times .

I grew up on rock cakes and when my children were small in the 80s they grew up on them too but since they grew up and left home I haven't made any anymore. Probably because there is just the two of us and we would then have to eat them all!!!! Maybe I should make some again when my grandson comes over. He would love them. This brings back memories Rik, Saturdays was always baking day in our house growing up. Every week we’d help Mum bake Scones, Rock Cakes, Iced Honey Buns (like a sort of ginger cake), fairy cakes & melting moments (a sandwiched melt in the mouth shortcake type biscuit) & a Victoria sponge if we were having visitors. Australian here. I was born in 1960 and rock cakes were a big part of visiting my grandmother and one particular aunt, but they have both been dead for many decades. I feel inspired to revisit my childhood....thank you very much! Thanks also for the history lesson - I had no idea they were in any way connected to the War. I thought they were as traditional as Eccles Cakes or Yorkshire Curd Tart.

Talking of rock cake memories---When I was 21 I found myself in Liverpool Prison (Walton) We often got a rock cake for supper, along with a mug of unsweetened tea. We were lucky if we found a currant in our bun!
My mother used to make rock cakes, she'd count how many there were on the cooling rack. My Dad and I used to help ourselves, and tell fibs about how many we'd eaten, thanks for the memories!
My mum wasn’t a baker but my auntie Nan was a brilliant baker, scones ( my favourites) and her rock cakes were devine, I was always asking my mum when we were going to visit my auntie so I could ask her if she would make some scones or rock cakes for us, aye fond memories. I miss both my mum and auntie who I loved dearly, but life goes on, thanks for the memories Rik.
these are so good. I make em with some dates soaked in cofee/rum, toasted pumpkin seeds, slices of almonds, chopped dried apricots, chopped pecans and walnuts, then fill to a cup with some fine chopped raisins makes for a great sconey, cakey, spicey... yum :) thanks for recipe!

Rock Cakes were certainly a big part of my Australian growing up, back in the 50s-60s - and I still make and enjoy them!! And yes, they were an early lesson in school "Home Science" classes too, one of the few in which all students were successful, LoL!! Whereas Mum used either Dates OR Currants and glace Cherries, I tend to use glace Ginger, Mixed Peel and Currants and also wholemeal Flour + LASHINGS of Butter :) Ah, the "good old days" ......... 😂 RjB

My mother used to make rock cakes, she'd count how many there were on the cooling rack. My Dad and I used to help ourselves, and tell fibs about how many we'd eaten, thanks for the memories!

My mum wasn’t a baker but my auntie Nan was a brilliant baker, scones ( my favourites) and her rock cakes were devine, I was always asking my mum when we were going to visit my auntie so I could ask her if she would make some scones or rock cakes for us, aye fond memories. I miss both my mum and auntie who I loved dearly, but life goes on, thanks for the memories Rik.

these are so good. I make em with some dates soaked in cofee/rum, toasted pumpkin seeds, slices of almonds, chopped dried apricots, chopped pecans and walnuts, then fill to a cup with some fine chopped raisins
makes for a great sconey, cakey, spicey... yum :)

Rock Cakes were certainly a big part of my Australian growing up, back in the 50s-60s - and I still make and enjoy them!! And yes, they were an early lesson in school "Home Science" classes too, one of the few in which all students were successful, LoL!! Whereas Mum used either Dates OR Currants and glace Cherries, I tend to use glace Ginger, Mixed Peel and Currants and also wholemeal Flour + LASHINGS of Butter :) Ah, the "good old days" ......... 😂 RjB

Ah, mate. This recipe brought back memories...when I went to 'big' School in 2001 I had to take food technology lessons. One of the cooking recipes we did was indeed rock cakes. Delightful little things! marvellous matey!
