  • Firstly- Sorry for all of the bangs. I am using a mic that is attached to my desk and as I get excited I seem to tap on my desk! I hope they aren't too bothersome and I will certainly be more careful.
I hope that this video provides you transparency into what it took for me to get into medical school from a grades standpoint. Grades are important Yes, but remember that grades alone do not define you and they certainly do not determine who will become a great physician or not. Keep working my friends

Hey Pat I want to thank you so much for making these videos. You're very straightforward, no BS, providing information for the listeners. Your videos have helped me relate to my situation. I'm a active duty Army, just about to start my CVICU journey but med school has always been in my mind. I've taken most prereqs when I was in nursing school so my goal is to apply to med school in the next 3 years. I want to ensure I focus on being a competent ICU nurse first. Hope to learn more from you and pick your brain sometime in the future!

Hey Sarah, your comment means a lot to me, thank you! And thank you for your service.
As you've heard in my other videos I think their CVICU is a fantastic place to start. You will be challenged and put in uncomfortable situations and you will have to rise to the occasion and get better everyday. I agree with you, become the best nurse that you can be over the next year and then see where you are at and what the next steps should be.
You seem like you are in a great place and have already made some huge steps on your journey to physician. I hope the videos I make will continue to help you on your journey. I look forward to hearing all about it

Congrats! Your hardwork will definitely pay off! I'm so glad that the diverse life/work experiences and determination of "non-traditional" candidates are being valued during the admissions process. Shows how working hard and being focused is key to achieving your dreams. 👏
Which programs/schools did you get into?

Hey future Doc, thank you so much for the transparency! I feel right in the same boat as you! ICU as a new grad RN to now, except prior, I had already nearly finished a bachelor's in Biology. I'm back to working on that now - finishing physics and Biochem and etc. Any advice or schools to consider? Also, can you go into how you did your application, like extra curriculars? Shadowing experience, etc? Thanks!!
Looking to go into Pathology, by the way :)

Hey Pat! Glad to see a vid from you again. Happy to update that I'm progressing well in my own journey. Gotten A's on all the pre-reqs while haulin my butt to finish it all during my undergrad BSN program. My question is as I look into the near future and gotten full-time RN invites (ED v ICU), is there any specific recommendations on how to tackle MCAT + apps? I am expecting to enter a 2-year contract as a fulltime RN so I'm wondering if I should take the risk to study while working in service of possibly getting in soon after I end that contract or wait til that contract ends and go per diem to commit fully to studying. Also, do you think it matters the unit you chose? Keep being an inspiration good sir.

Sean! My good man. So great to hear from you. You should be very proud of yourself for all of the work you have put in and all of the discipline that you have shown! keep rocking brotha
I will be biased and say that ICU is the best place to be. I loved my time on the CVICU.. any ICU that I worked at as a travel nurse after that was no where near as hard or as acute. In the ICU you can have longitudinal relationships with the patients, usually a more controlled environment where learning and exposure are easy to find. happy to talk more on that!
I think that as you start to work as a nurse you are going to realize that it is really a full time commitment and enough on your plate. I think its fair to allow yourself at least one year of just becoming the best nurse that you can be before you have to go and make any decision on when to study for the MCAT or if you should take less hours at work... I hope that is reasonable as an answer. But realistically I studied while working full time and if you already have those classes you will not be taking them like I did while working- giving you four full days each week to study. If you have managed to get through you pre reqs while doing your BSN then I have no doubt that 4 days a week for MCAT is adequate and you are going to absolutely crush that thing... just take practice tests to see where you're at score wise and time it off of that. Again we will talk more about this down the road.
Im inspired by you and your effort and discipline. I didn't have your vision or work ethic in undergrad.. so my sincerest respect and admiration to you. Excited to see where your journey goes my friend

Hi! I want to say thank you for inspiring me, my concern is I didn't get good GPAs on my BSN of nursing. Is that going to be a big problem to go to the med school in the US? Thanks in advance.

@@RN2MDpat I am thinking about it! It's always been a thought, but way more recently. I graduate nursing school in May and start working in the PICU in July. In the meantime, I have some shadowing set up with a pediatrician I use to work with, and starting to organize my past transcripts to see what prereqs I would need to start tackling. It's rather early in the process..still seeking God's will on the whole thing, but finding your channel has been enlightening and encouraging. Keep posting :) and I hope all is going well with your schooling.

The nice thing is you are in a great place. Dont stress tooo much about your future. just focus on being the absolute best nurse you can be for like a year. becoming a great nurse will already be enough on your plate.

Hi man. Current RN here in the CVICU as well. I am thinking about going back for medical school and been looking to do a DIY postbacc as well. Do you think going to a community college for your pre-reqs hindered you in any way to get into medical school?

    • @RN2MDpat
      @RN2MDpat  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think that at the end of the day going to a university is going to look better just due to the assumption that those classes are going to be a little more high level.. Whether that is fair or not.. I cant say but thats just how it is. Now for me CC was the right choice across the board. Cost, Class schedule etc. To dispel any questions about your ability to excel in sciences.. go crush the MCAT. I also think that working while taking classes looks very good showing that you can handle a lot on your plate as well as the fact that you really want to do it. Let alone continuing to get that nursing experience. Ultimately if you can take at a university more power to you but if you can not dont let that discourage you or destroy your dreams - because you can make it happen at a CC.
