  • In this video, How you can do medicine as a second career, I go over what you should know when starting a career in medicine a little late. I go over the things you need to know when applying to medical school at an older age. I go over medical school for a non traditional student.
    My name is Dr. Karen Francois and I am a 5th year Attending physician based out of NY. These stories will chronicle my life with Anesthesia, as an Anesthesiologist and home life with my husband and 3 children. Through these glimpses into my life I hope to inspire and motivate young women or men into seriously considering Anesthesia as a career choice.
    I am a Doctor and I as born and raised in the projects of the Bronx NY and I made it to become of highly respected physician , if I can do it then any one else in my situation can do the same.

    I'm in my first year of Med School. I am 43 y/o, married, have 2 kids in college. I was a PT for 17 years. I consider my past a huge benefit to being in med school! Although science classes are difficult due to the time that has elapsed from my undergrad years. Overall, my PT experience helps with clinical application of information as well as learning clinical skills. Anyone can do it, if you can dedicate yourself to it!!!

    Currently in my third year of pursuing my degree in early childhood education.
    It was only when I started my preservice training that I was exposed to concepts like child development and pediatric illness. It was then that I knew I was born to be a pediatrician.
    Many say I should have shifted to a premed degree. But I believe I don’t have to choose between having “LPT” and “MD” after my name. I believe I can have both!
    Thank you so much for this 💙

    Hey Dr. Francois! Thanks so much for the video. Wondering if you could talk about the flexibility of anesthesia in a different video - it's unclear what schedules are realistic and what schedules are unrealistic! I.e no call schedules, schedules with night call (i.e no 24 hour call), schedules at 0.8FTE, schedules with 2 or 3 weekdays plus 1 call day (more days off).

    Another great video! I believe I read somewhere that 35+ yo applicants represent approximately 1% of med students in the US. It’s encouraging to see that I’m not the only one considering a career change later than I should have. But I’m done focusing on age.
    I did see a video where someone recommended NOT mentioning your children in your personal statement. As a mom who put aside my career ambitions specifically to become a better mother I think my family represents a big part of my story/journey to med school. What do you think? And also, could you do a video on how to write a good personal statement? I won’t be applying for a couple more years but I’m trying to get a head start lol.

    I have worked in public health policy for many years. I wanted to join medical school when I was in my 20's but since I was an immigrant, I could not get any student loans. The desire to study medicine remained and I have enjoyed working alongside doctors to develop policies. I hope to apply to medical school next year in 2023. I will br 48 years old. I am a bit concerned about managing the study workload as I have been going through menopause and sometimes struggle with fatigue. Can you provide some advice? Do you know any women who have completed medical school in their 50's or 60's?

    Im thinking of going to med school for either radiology or anesthesiology, I was just wondering if the hours are harsh? ie: do you work weekends? Do you work holidays like christmas? how many hours in a 7-day week?

    • @3anesthesiame40
      @3anesthesiame40  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Alek, thanks for watching! It really depends where you work. For me, in a non-private practice setting, I have reasonable hours and if full time, you will likely work weekends in this type of setting. If you work in a small group you’ll probably work the holidays more often. In my particular case I’m frequently able to get the holidays off ( I was off on Christmas). In a typical week I work about 50 hours (varies if I’m on call).

    I have a question. Are non-degree holders able to get into medical school? I can see how an RN or someone in a stem field is able to transition to medicine but how would that look for someone with no bachelors, no college credits, and worked a regular trade job?

    • @3anesthesiame40
      @3anesthesiame40  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      College degree/Pre-requisite courses are required for application to medical school. It is quite competitive so your best bet is matriculation into an undergraduate degree program on a pre-medical track or completing those courses in a post-bachelors program if someone had a different career path before wanting to become a doctor (even RNs do this). You won’t be able to apply any other way.
