If I am fair and unbiased and honest, water is really dirt cheap . Malaysia should change the price. This is what any country would do. We should not be ungrateful to Malaysia, the country that has been feeding us water since independence. Without Malaysia water, how could sg have prospered. A bankrupt Malaysia is doing what they need to do to survive this crisis due to 1MDB. We should follow Confucius teachings and respect Malaysia for their generosity that allowed Singapore to survive. We must not bite the hand that feeds us, metaphorically speaking
Singapore goverment think they are the smartest people in the world....they think they could cheat thier neighbours forever and fool the world with thier hypocritical fake democracy....if they even know what democracy means...
Smart Singaporean! Unlikely many ungrateful bitches here who still don't get it why Malaysia finally bite back, after decades being taken advantage of.
Actually PAP-led administration exagarated the whole thing as in going into war because they wanted Singaporean believe that there is a diplomatic tension with neighboring countries. So that, SG people would look at PAP as the national hero who save them from "bad" Mahathir
Simple. Like a broken record player, it plays the same tune over and over again, spices it up with a little envy, race and religion. A lie repeated a thousand times seems to be true. The ex-PM is still at his old game, but the people of Langkawi and Malaysia in general could see more clearly now. It was the most embarrassing moment for a PM of 20 over years.
This young chap must have crafted his questions over nights. Smartness with a large dose of arrogance. I am glad Tun took his questions with grace, calmness and was unfazed by the youth's persistence. Society will teach him how to be humble in front of an old sage. I am Singaporean!
Ditto. Singaporean here too and I find the arrogance of some Singaporeans to be overbearing and off-putting. While I do not always agree with Tun M on all matters, I can see that he's just looking out for the interest of his people. That's what a good leader does. Of course, he isn't perfect but he has made a fundamental difference to the country's economy and forever reshaped in the landscape of politics in Malaysia. During his first tenure as PM, the Malaysian ringgit was stronger and there was a lot of progress and development within the country. It was only after he stepped down and corruption became rampant that things went south for Malaysia. He's no pushover, unlike many of his successors.
I’m Malaysian. This Mahathir is the biggest corrupter of all times. He stole from the people and if not for Singapore, we Malaysians would be bankrupt long ago.
You are as dumb as the Oxford student and the rest that laugh at the auditorium. You fell for Dr M choice of words. First buying raw water at 1 Singaore cent and selling clean water to Malaysia for 15 cent(50 sen) is a good deal, if we make money in bottled mineral water and tap water for drinking and bathing, so can Malaysia. Malaysia can sell the water to Thailand for much much higher, 1 gallon for 15 cent, everyone is the winner. Malaysia is already selling to Thailand for treated. I guess our oxford student didn't see that coming, he could have added this point to Dr M
Young chaps in Malaysia and elsewhere nowadays know old foxes are cunning and try to pull wool over their eyes to look good or win votes. Unfortunately there are some who don't.
Dr Mahathir is a Legend in politic Arena.Even Putin and many World Leaders also respected him.But the problem in Malaysia is corruptions which already become a habit and culture. It's not easy to stop this corruption in a country that bigger than Singapore.😊And furthermore it's too long to explain.

Im malaysian but the thing is singapore have water security problems in the past, now 65 % of water come from singapore themselves and 35 % from malaysia. The most important thing malaysia can do right now is to wait out the duration of the water deal itself. Morally it is wrong to buy water at such a low price but sells it at a bigger price. but a deal is a deal. The credibility of both countries at stake.
Now every body knw Singapore buy raw water at 3cents and Malaysia in 1962 was very generous because Singapore at that time is still a young nation from part of the State in Malaysia become an independance nation.

The biggest losers are people of johor and not the federal government. Johorians has been pawns in the game of thrones. Wake up. All the Singapore government need is to ban all workers into singapore, no more treated water, no more ships from pasir Gudang thru Singapore water. This issue should be brought up by both countries leaders and to be settled peacefully behind closed doors. Every country leader is fighting for their own country and people rights. Unwise decisions from both sides by inviting hostility. One guy in small boat thought he was visiting international waters was then chased away by warships and coast guards. His intention is hear from his local naval experts on where the disputed waters are as he is no naval expert. The presence of the navy and Coast Guard fleet to chase away a small boat is overwhelming. Crooked bridge is a concept by Dr M bcos Singapore didn't want to free the passage at causeway possibly on the raw water supply and the possibility of pasir gudang port becoming more successful. If Malaysia is hostile, they would have disable the bridge on their own. Why bother negotiations? For the airspace system. No country leader will accept limiting their airspace without compensation. Is there any compensation package on the table? Nope. Singapore side is trying to be sneaky by letting this slide pass. If Malaysia is hostile once again, they will build 5 construction cranes at the spot blocking planes entering or landing safely at seletar airport. I dun stand on Malaysia or Singapore side but facts are on the table. We bought millions of gallons of raw water per month and Inreturn they purchased pea sized volumes from us. They need it as emergency backup. Not daily usage. Of cos both sides want to win but there must be a neutral agreement from both sides. The high speed rail is slightly controversial and in the end if there's no talk about it, Singapore can proceed to claim contractual compensation from Malaysia. That's what contracts are for. For the student I have only one question. "For fame or personal gratification?" my guess is both. Fundamentally disagree? You don't even have any foundations yet. Dr M has initiated Petronas towers, bridges, schools, automobiles... What have u done? 头没那么大,不要这样没礼貌。
If it is for fame then I guess he got what he want lol even his peers laughed at him.. As Malaysian I hope Tun can change the agreement while he is still in charge

G Oroton, Mahaathir mentioned warships...what warships ? They were patrol and navy vessels. What a spinner Mahthir is. Where is his evidence ? Singapore Defence Minister said Singapore navy and Police Coast Guard craft have been patrolling these waters for 20 years or more. “Out of nowhere, on Oct 25 2018, Malaysian government vessels now claim these waters as theirs and have been continually intruding since November. These are serious violations of Singapore’s sovereignty.” Mahahtir said "warships'? Where are the pictures ? Mahathir has to show evidence.
well the inherent unfairness of a contract does not in itself excuse the breach of a contractual obligation nor excuse the attempt to unilaterally revise important clauses in the contract.

@@ghilmanmutalib5149 This is not a slave owner mentality omg. That's just a false equivalency. This is not a contract for human servitude (in which case the contract will be immediately void for illegality). But the legal principle is that a contract cannot be vitiated simply because one side made a bad bargain. If that is the case, transactional security will be completely lost and people can just walk back on their legally binding contracts with impunity anytime one of the parties feel it is 'unfair'. Transactional security is a cornerstone of contracts and contracts can really only be vitiated for unfairness when there is deliberate and overt exploitative conduct by one party over the other to the extent that it becomes unconscionable to uphold the terms of the contract. I seriously doubt that the current water agreement reaches this very high threshold. I don't think it is met in this case and so I will just uphold the original terms of the contract. Besides, Malaysia had the option to revise the terms of the contract in 1987 and chose not to do so. This fact tilts the circumstances even more favourably towards Singapore.

It's a fact Singapore should admit, they purchase water at a price that is completely obsolete and absurd to go on now eventhough it was mutually inked. Why can't Singapore be generous to revise the price that could reflect fairness to all Malaysians?
Tats why singapore is singapore... Only under mahathir, malaysia cannot be taken advantage off. Under rest of the PM, it is soo easy to do tat especially to Najib😅😅
If you are correct, then Malaysia should pay the Philippines billions of dollars for Sabah. Malaysia pays the Philippines "a price that is completely obsolete and absurd". What can a few thousand ringgit pay for cost of living of the Philippines sultan and royal family. Malaysia should be more generous before asking others to be generous. Laws and and legal agreements signed by both countries cannot simply be changed by anyone party.
@@westwoodly The claim of Sabah as ancestral territory of the Sultan of Sulu is baseless. Read: “Modern international law does not recognize the survival of a right to sovereignty based solely on historic title; not in any event after an exercise of self-determination conducted (in North Borneo in 1962) in accordance with the requisites of international law, the bona fides of which have received international recognition by the political organs of the United Nations. Against this, historic claims and pre-colonial titles are mere relics of another international legal era, one that ended with the setting of the sun on the age of colonial imperium”. - judge Ad Hock Frank, 2001. For example; the ICJ in the 2008 Malaysia-Singapore dispute over Pedra Branca recognised that Pedra Branca was not terra nullius (no-man’s land) and the sovereignty over it was with the Johor Sultanate. The ICJ, however, awarded Pedra Branca to Singapore when it was proven that the British government of Singapore has acquired it from the Sultan of Johor since 1953. If ancestral claims hold strong position under international law, then Pedra Branca should remain with the Johor Sultanate (Malaysia) and not with Singapore. In addition, if historical claims could be upheld, then, Malaysia, through the existing Johor Sultanate could put a claim on Singapore as well as the Riau Islands of Indonesia. Malaysia too, via the historical territories of the Kedah Sultanate, could claim sovereignty over Thai provinces of Satun and Trang as well as Tenasserim in Myanmar. This is nevertheless, not how international law operates and shows that ancestral claims do not carry much weight under international law. The Philippines Government does not recognise the Sulu Sultanate as a sovereign entity within the Philippine Constitution. The Malaysian Government no longer pays the Sulu representatives since 2013, and the Malaysian Government had been seeking to legally abolish the secession payment (which were not rents, as the Filipinos mistakenly believe) since the late 1990s. Stopping the payment indicates that Sabah is indeed Malaysian sovereignty. Any other claims are considered satire, and should not be entertained.
@@AliffDelacoure Of course you are right. Countries and politicians interpret the situation and agreement they way they like. It's quite clear that this student doesn't understand the principles of international law (which regarding this specific issue, would be of public international law, compared to private international law. The latter being that it is completely different in context as well as whether it has any legally binding actions.) Which in this case, can only be mutually agreed upon by the two nations, thus being in the context of _public_ international law. Looks like the person does not have any understanding of UNCLOS (the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) as well. In essence, _both_ nations have to agree on the principles and terms of the agreement (or treaty which would likely be the case) between the two nations. *But if it is certain that the Government of Singapore is refusing to negotiate terms with Mahathir on the topic of water supply to Singapore, then Mahathir and the Government of Malaysia is not obliged to meet with them.* They have to discuss it in a such a way that the agreement is fair. (by the way, I'm neither a Malaysian nor a Singaporean.) If he had done his homework (something of which I'd expect a supposed Oxford undergrad to have done), he would have known this. Oh, and his ignorance shows.
International laws are less effective here, this plays into the deep roots and history Singapore and Malaysia have fought over on for decades, ASEAN rules (especially rules between SG and Malaysia) take precedence in this case. Most of the trades done between Malaysia and Singapore are back door and international laws are not prominent, Secondly, Singapore has never refused Malaysia of revisiting the water supply trade and Malaysia is dependent on Singapore for clean water as the bill of water trade in 1962 - 2061,in lieu of that, i disagree that the oxford kid was being ignorant he was probably aggravated by Mahathir’s response to his question as he was not directly responding to it. They just both have extremely different view points and that’s ok
Nathan, I think you are apparently Unaware that the Water, Agreement referred to by the student and Mahathir was an Integral Part of the LEGAL Separation Agreement by Singapore FROM Malaysia, signed and ratified by both Singapore and Malaysia under the watch of the British. This agreement IN TOTAL, created Singapore as an Independent Country, recognised by the UN. I presume Mahathir knows what a Legal agreement is. But he probably knows that you don't know that the 2 WATER AGREEMENTS were Embedded into the Singapore Separation Agreement from Malaysia. Without this water agreement, Singapore would NOT have agreed to Separate as Singapore would not have sufficient water to sustain itself. And the Malaysian PM then and Government wanted Singapore Out of Malaysia. These are the historical facts in 1965.

Additionally, by what Dr Mahatir has stated that, even though it may seem Singapore is the "richer" state, because our "GDP per capita" is greater than Malaysia on paper, that statement fails to account for other aspects, if Dr Mahatir wants to talk about "per capita" or each living heads in Singapore, the cost of living in Singapore per capita is far greater than that of Malaysia per capita. So his arguement that Singapore should pay more just because of the fact that Singapore is richer per capita is laughable. In fact, it just demonstrates how incapable the government is able to increase GDP per capita of Singapore. Malaysia has historically enjoyed the exact same benefits of Singapore, geographically, climate wise, diversity wise, and additionally Malaysia has natural resources, but why doesn't Malaysia have identical or greater GDP per capita? I am not against Malaysia, but their government does make some questionable choices sometimes, and I am sure that it is perplexing for the citizens to have to burden the cost from the mistakes from the government, no government is perfect, but you should not just blindly shill whichever suits the narrative.

It shows that you lack knowledge, that's all. It was a package deal which requires Singapore to ensure that Johore gets sufficient treated water supply, and also that Johore has sufficient water before selling raw water to Singapore. Singapore abide by the agreement and procure the water catchment area, paying huge compensation to the inhabitants, paying rent for the catchment area and building dams and pipelines to tap the rain water that would otherwise flood the villages or flow down into the river and sea. In addition, Singapore supplies water to Johore at below cost whenever it needs more. It cost billions of dollars to build all these infrastructure which eventually will be given to Johore - as it did with earlier with one of the reservoir. Mahathir stills sees the treaty with blinkered eye - he only sees the 3 cents and that's all matter. That's why he couldn't resolve the old railway for his entire terms as Prime Minister, nor the water issue. It was Najib who was able to seal the deal - getting a few pieces of prime land in the city centre in land-scare Singapore that is now probably worth more than a few billion Singapore dollars compared to the railway line. Mahathir couldn't see the situation in totality. Same blinkered eye he sees in his relation with China, which is Malaysia's No 1 trade partner.

Had a great exchange with Malaysian PM Tun Dr Mahathir at the Oxford Union, where I asked him about the ongoing maritime dispute between Singapore and Malaysia. Dr M responded that the 1962 Water Agreement is unfair to Malaysia. During our exchange, I understood his argument to mean that it was unfair for Malaysia to sell untreated water to Singapore at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons but buy treated water from Singapore at $60 per 1,000 gallons. Thinking that $60 per 1,000 gallons seemed strangely high, I subsequently double-checked this. It turns out that that Dr M was referring to the price at which Singapore's PUB sells water domestically (approximately RM 60 per 1,000 gallons). Singapore sells treated water to Johor at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons. Dr Mahathir thinks this is unfair but I disagree. Given that it costs Singapore RM 2.40 to treat 1,000 gallons of water, Singapore subsidises the water by RM 1.90 per 1,000 gallons. Johor sells this treated water to Malaysians at RM 3.95 per 1,000 gallons - meaning Johor earns a profit of RM 3.45 per 1,000 gallons. Dr M also noted that Singapore has bought water from Malaysia at a fixed price of 3 sen per 1,000 gallons since 1926, and that Singapore has stopped Malaysia from revising the price. This is also inaccurate. Singapore has purchased water at this price since 1962. Under the 1962 Water Agreement, Malaysia had the right to review the price in 1987 (when Dr M was PM). Malaysia chose not to do so. Furthermore, as Singapore's Foreign Minister noted in Parliament earlier this week, Singapore is obliged to sell Malaysia 5 million gallons per day (gpd) of treated water but out of goodwill supplies 16 million gpd. Two weeks ago, at Johor’s request, Singapore further increased the supply of subsidised water to 22 million gpd. In 2018, also at Johor’s request, Singapore supplied more than the usual 16 million gpd for 20 days. All the additional treated water has been supplied to Johor at the

EVEN that argument was ALREADY clearly smacked down by the student's 3 rebuttals: 1. there's a legally binding agreement, lasting until 2060s, for raw water to be sold from Malaysia at that price. PERIOD. Black and white, YOU SIGNED IT under no coercion or duress. 2. you HAD the chance to revise it before! Not as if Singapore didn't give you the chance to revise the price. Again, YOU didn't make a fuss about it then and ultimately did not revise the price 100% WILLINGLY. 3. Singapore sells treated water at a huge discount to Johor, this is cost on our side as well - you think it doesn't take fuel, electricity, manpower and maintenance to treat water? So there is no use coming to us now and keep saying that "it's unfair" when ALREADY there's firstly, a legally binding agreement (BOTH parties mutually agreed to), and secondly, a good will opportunity given to you to revise it and thirdly, a pretty good deal that indirectly makes up for the so-called "unfairness" (cost savings from discounted treated water that you receive VS. 3 cents raw water that you sell). OOOOOO WAIT, are you able to understand any of the words above...? Oh right, you probably couldn't even get into a Malaysian University, let alone Oxford.
The real story is much more than that about water pricing. Malaysia supply not consistent and very dirty water in 1980s, Singapore asked Malaysia to clean up river & water bank. Malaysia refused unless Singapore pay higher price or come to Malaysia to repair and spent capex. Singapore had chosen the later spent billions. Long story short, many untold events

The issue for Spore was not the price of water. It knows it's too cheap. Singapore was prepared to accept a price revision in the past but it wanted concessions on other areas from Malaysia . This Malaysia could not accept and rightly so. They see it as good negotiating strategy but Malaysia see it as ungrateful and stuck up neighbour.

Plan to reschedule the water price and negotiation always fail. Then after the water agreement end. Malaysian authority in future must calculate all the cost they had lost for years and the new agreement must be really totally severely acutely on the Malaysian side. Just 'hati kering' sell untreatment water USD10 PER LITER to Singapore. Agreement revise every 5 years. Malaysia no need to buy treatment water from singapore again. Because here we already have good water treatment facilities a long time ago. We actually dont need at all these kind treatment water for this bad unfair unfavorable 1926 water agreement. If in the future, Singapore govt feel it is unfair for this new agreement, dont say we are cruel, unmankind, unacceptable or any labels that you like to label us...think it now before its to late. Be wise, dont delay, dont play play, revise the agreement asap because malaysian govt is not so cruel (now).

For the student I have only one question.

well the inherent unfairness of a contract does not in itself excuse the breach of a contractual obligation nor excuse the attempt to unilaterally revise important clauses in the contract.
@@eugenedebbs2189 thats some slave owner mentality bruh. “My contract trumps fairness”. Wanted a fair deal is just human nature and holds weight in any argument. This kid got embarassed

Read:
“Modern international law does not recognize the survival of a right to sovereignty based solely on historic title; not in any event after an exercise of self-determination conducted (in North Borneo in 1962) in accordance with the requisites of international law, the bona fides of which have received international recognition by the political organs of the United Nations.
So Mahathir can claim Singapore and parts of Indonesia, but Sulu cannot claim Sabah. To extend the argument further, the Thai King cannot claim part of northern Malay, and neither Indonesia can claim parts of Borneo. Only Malaysia can. That's Malaysia law.
(by the way, I'm neither a Malaysian nor a Singaporean.)
If he had done his homework (something of which I'd expect a supposed Oxford undergrad to have done), he would have known this. Oh, and his ignorance shows.
What?
Bunkum

Singapore even acted in good faith, by selling way more water, on top of the surplus of the 11 million gallons of water in, in which i emphasise is only a ONE time event, when the water treatment plant in johor is affected by pollution.

It's so laughable that so many comments from Malaysians here blindly and delusionally trying to claim that Mahathir won against this Singaporean student, not knowing that he was actually school-ed and was completely forced into a corner by both reason and evidence; so much so that ALL he could only do was to keep harping on (which would be a flimsy argument in an international court by the way) the 3 cents thing, 3 cents here, 3 cents there. EVEN that argument was ALREADY clearly smacked down by the student's 3 rebuttals:
1. there's a legally binding agreement, lasting until 2060s, for raw water to be sold from Malaysia at that price.
