    I have used these quite a bit while just driving and walking around and had not submerged the X3 in the protective housing in water yet... but now that I have, I'm realizing this might not be an answer.

    I bought them for use on the car (for bugs and specs that may hit the lens), and I mount my 360 on the backboard at local college basketball games. It's great for both of those. Indoors-no guards and underwater, the invisible underwater housing.

    The vurnability of this camera is actually holding me of buying it...
    I really don't understand why they didn't made removable lenscovers instead of selling covers that you stick onto the case.
    It would not have taken a NASA scientist to achieve this. And it would have been easily possible by designing a special removal tool for it.
    The "threads" would have gone inside to not obstruct the lens view. But I don't see any problems in that. It only would take a little bit more of space. But I guess much people wouldn't mind much when the camera gets about a few mm thicker while they have the possibility to remove lenscovers. Lenscovers could actually be of any material when they're removable. Because you just can replace them then when damaged.

      I definitely agree. It's amazing that the Go series has threads for changing out lens protectors but the top-level camera from their offerings doesn't. Hopefully they correct that with the X4 or whatever is next.
      I will say, this vulnerability hasn't stopped me from using it, especially with the sticky lens guards. Since I 1) don't do anything extreme that would most likely damage this camera (like riding a dirt bike, racing a car, etc.) and 2) I am comfortable putting almost all of my equipment in just about any situation in order to get the shot, I had no problems getting this.

      Very spot on opinion! I WILL buy this protector, but for ONLY when not in use. Although there's never a guarantee, but I'm an anal, meticulous Virgo who's over the top with being careful with any of my electronics. Have never dropped my phone, nor a camera - yet. lol. But I will buy this for storage in my pocket or bag, but will take it off for use and just be extremely mindful of not bumping/hitting it on anything. And will just wait until 360 come out with better solution.

      @@tribzman3977 that is actually a great idea. Using it for storage.

    The sticky guards are sacrificial plastic. Like ANY plastic they scratch (safety glasses, reading glasses, headlight covers). They are made for impact resistance. If you want to protect your lens in the bottom of a kayak use the silicon hood. This version apparently has obvious stitch line conflicts.

    Thanks for this update. I just picked up a 360 a couple weeks ago and have really only used it once when we toured the USS Yorktown. I noticed some condensation buildup just from the humidity on the sticky lenses while recording and judging from this video looks like the max guards will be worse.

    • @MilledgeAustin
      @MilledgeAustin  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah. I saw a little condensation build up on the insides of my sticky lens guards when I have jumped in the water with the X3, and I was hoping that these guards would allow me to clean them easier... but they really took a while to get reacclimated to the heat and humidity. I'm really hoping the X4 has a screw on option and/or someone comes up with a tempered glass version of the sticky lens mounts (or something of that nature).

      I’ve recently returned from a snowboard trip where I lost a bunch of great off piste footage because of the official insta360 sticky lens guards fogging up 😭 It’s rubbish they are stuck on as you can’t sort that in the field.
      I’m thinking these might be the answer as you could pop them off and wipe the inside of the cover them bam, you’re back in business! I note you say they take a while to acclimate, but in snow sports I’m hoping this wouldn’t be such an issue as temp range between the snow and air wouldn’t be as great?? What do you think?
      Before anyone says just go without, that’s a big no from me, I snapped my selfie stick and would have ruined the lens if they weren’t covered by guards in a big tumble!

    I subbed to you a while back for your work with the Insta360 x3. I also got these lens protectors and this was exactly my concern. (I've already done over 20 videos with this camera in various conditions) When I held them in my hand they were definitely plasticky and did not instill confidence in any way. I opted NOT to use them since I live with BRIGHT SUN and TONS OF WATER.
    I believe the best application would be for fast events (driving, hiking) where debris is the issue and sun will be at a minimum.

      Exactly. When my buddy and I go to do Tail of the Dragon this fall, I will take the one I didn’t scratch to help avoid rock chips when I do certain shots, but it will be on the shelf until then.

    Thanks for this "Part II" ! I think I'll stick with the original protection then. I should mostly use the camera inside. If it's used outside, it should never have something to do with sports. And for the sound, it seemed pretty OK before going in the water.

    • @MilledgeAustin
      @MilledgeAustin  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, sound wise I have been thoroughly impressed with this camera every time I use it. Obviously in high wind situations (outside a moving vehicle) it can be a problem, but I love how well it captures audio. And yeah, these mounts are ok at best. I’m very hopeful something will happen to get better protection someday.

    I found other flaws: they cover microphones and speakers. That cannot help performance. Check it out. I went to a larger square based sticky mount. So far so good.

    Hi, I guess that the low temperatures while skiing would also smog the glass protection lenses ?

    • @MilledgeAustin
      @MilledgeAustin  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not really sure since the snow and air temps would both be cold. Could be worth trying.

      @@MilledgeAustin Hello Austin , thanks for your reply about the glass lens guards for the Insta360 x3 . We went yesterday to the mountains, very disappointed because while filming skiing/ snowboarding the stitch line really really bad and I’ve already the changed the stitch line lens in the app, there was NO fogging in the lens at all which was great . Still unless they can improve the stitch line problem for me these lenses are unusable.

  • @rhlparkr
    @rhlparkr 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I get stitch line with the sticky lens also, and it fogs up when dipped in water

    • @MilledgeAustin
      @MilledgeAustin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You have to use the app to massage the stitch line with the sticky lens guards. There are a bunch of different settings in that tab that I play with and calibrate to minimize it. And I have seen a little fogging with them, but not as much as the premium lens guards.
