Lithium has helped me stabilize my moods very well, while gabapentin helps me focus and mono-task. Wellbutrin and Celexa help me stay above the depression. Night meds for sleep is half a Trazodone and melatonin. I also take a multi vitamin. I was misdiagnosed with major depression and finally got bipolar 2 at age 58, after feeling suicidal for 4 years. I’m better now than I’ve been my whole life, and went through almost everything on your flow chart of other problems. Thank God for social services, psychiatrists, therapists, hospitals, aftercare, and my family. Thank you!

I have type 2 bipolar disorder. I have long maintained that I never entirely feel "normal", I always have lingering symptoms. And sometimes it's like I have lingering symptoms of both hypomania and depressive, i.e. I am exhausted, without energy but my mind is racing. The only time I feel really well is during the prodrome of hypomania but I don't realize what it is until it's really beginning to kick in. Another thing I've noticed is how it seems to have changed over the years. In my early twenties my hypomania wasn't as profound, not as uncomfortable, and lasted for like months while my low times were relatively short while now my hypomania has a far more sudden onset, shorter in duration and much more uncomfortable while my low times can go on for months. Also in the beginning, my ups and downs seemed to be more mood specific with my physical energy altered but not crazily so. My lows I had that true blue hopelessness and sadness but not terribly tired and my ups were moods of happiness with only a little increase in energy. Nowadays, it's like my moods aren't altered that much but my energy level changes are ridiculous with my lows being bizarrely fatigued and my ups having a crazy amount of physical energy that can only be addressed with physical exercise. I'm not all that productive like people describe it. It's more of an insane amount of unproductive, though very focused, physical energy.

You are loved and cherished. You have nothing to fear. There is nothing you can do wrong. If I had to boil this entire message down to one sentence, it would run this way: You are loved. And if I had to boil it down further, to just one word, it would (of course) be, simply: Love.

Psychotherapy ONLY helps if the person consciously WANTS to help themselves. Otherwise, it's just a money mill for the therapists. When you express "concern" to the affected family member, it may often be viewed by that person as "judgment" and as a consequence, they will withdraw, avoid, and cut off communication with the "concerned" family member. I know this firsthand as fact.

UPDATE: I have now been off of my lithium for 5 months or so. I’am doing well but Fall is coming. Spring and Fall are always difficult for me. I still take Lamictal and clonapin. I don’t feel that I need an anti-psychotic yet. But I’am aware that I might have to this winter. My liver has gone back to normal after an Internist told me it never would. Probably should’ve gone to a specialist.
I talked with my therapist yesterday and realized that I have been isolating to much. So I’m going to start going for walks. It makes me uncomfortable because I feel like people are watching me. I realize this is unrealistic paranoia but I Think that a lot of that is my borderline personality disorder.
So all in all I do believe I’m doing well at this point. I need to keep up with my therapist and be honest about my mood’s to my husband and therapist just in case I slip without realizing it.
It has been nice to think more clearly and not having to deal with irritating side effect’s of medication. So at this point I will keep managing and continue to move forward. A healthy balanced Routine is key for bipolar!

Sounds great, Did you know that Dusty Springfield was supposed to have had bipolar ? Have been reading her biography and watching youtubes documentaries on her life and it sure seems probable. She was hospitalized at Belvue in NewYork City in 1985 . Hard to believe she had this with her talent. See 1979 concert in London at Royal Albert theatre on youtube. Richard Dryfus too is a member of the club ( saw his interview on youtube). Lots of genius folks have this. You are definitely not alone with this. Best wishes.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder even though I do not believe I had it, I had depression but not bipolar, never had the manic stages , sleeping pills help me now to sleep, the doctors tried me on something like 15 types of medication, but nothing helped but sleeping pills are helping me , the only thing is the doctors do not like to prescribe it for me yet I was forced to take so much medication that never helped me, when I tell the doctors sleeping pills are helping they tell me they cannot prescribe it long term as I would be addicted, so a paradox really.

    little to nothing spoken of.
Mania was in different forms always followed by deep dark havens of depression. I was 50 when diagnosed, finally. Note*** I'm a psych nurse since 22 and since 50, depression is 90%.

Response rates do not look great--around 50%. Some of us with bipolar do not get much help from medication. Although the meds do not work, we do get their side effects like weight gain. I gained 100 pounds and as a result lost my self esteem. Eventually, my psychiatrist got me stable--but only after I stopped drinking. Many of us with bipolar try to self medicate. Drinking made me feel good for a while, but the pills didn't. Eventually, I got off meds and have done well for many decades.

All very interesting, especially the similarities of many of us bipolars. For me, first clinical depression on and off for several years, which slowly morphed into bipolar 2 at age 57.
My manic phases seem to be quite a bit less pronounced, and my depression had previously been much worse, because I attempted suicide 13 years ago.
Now my weird interest has shifted somewhat to discovering most of the common side effects I have from Lamotrigine. Not too serious, I suppose. Mostly just annoying, because I sometimes feel like I'm speaking, thinking, and moving in slow motion. Yeah, that old classic psycho-motor retardation.

There's several theories as to the etiology of bipolar. Energy (mitochondria) disregulation is but one. Another prominent idea is that it has to do with glutamate regulation.
The fact is that the brain is the most complex organism known to man. It is hard to make progress. I am just thankful we have smart people working hard to do it. And I am super thankful for rich people who donate money for the research.

But I gained weight, unfortunatelly. Although I prefer to get weight than to ever have that kind of depression again. It was awful and it was traumatic.

Here's some advise , when you first put someone on a ssri, and they come back and say they are worse, they are crawling out of their skin and would like to do the same with their bodies. This is because some many people can not start an serious at the starting dose . For example Paxil should start at 5 MG. It pails in comparison when it comes to anxiety. So, they say they are worse and yall increase the dose but these people haven't articulated how they actually feel. It's like you have a hemi in you. Now...this doesn't necessarily mean they are bipolar because they reacted to the ssri. Please hear these words, akastisia is torture. There are no words. Ots not just an uncomfortable feeling. It's terrifying, torturing.....every second. The living with akastisia group is utterly heart breaking. Every ten minutes someone is saying I'm done done I can't take it ...one man sqan dove out of his office window. It maddening. That group is very difficult to be in . People have this for 20 plus years. All you want to do is die it can happen when you're getting on medications when you're on medication or when you're getting off medications and all of the psych meds can be responsible I wish Klonopin and Xanax then at the top. Doctors are failing to recognize it and these people need help. It is so much more than a movement disorder. It's like a neurological poisoning and I think it has something to do with the myelin sheath losing its protective layer. I only had it for a short amount of time and it was unbearable and I would have definitely killed myself had it not gone away. I truly don't know how people hang out and live through it. L-lysine is y'all need to listen to your patients because it's hard as this is to swallow we actually are smarter about bipolar then y'all are we're the ones that have taken all the meds we research we know ourselves where is our is our own bodies y'all need to listen to us. Be very careful prescribing benzodiazepines and be very careful of the amount of milligrams that you're willing to give somebody and if you ever give Wellbutrin to a person that has a tendency to throw things and break things when they get angry they are going to come unglued in about 3 days after they start the Wellbutrin. They probably won't associated with the Wellbutrin they'll just think that person really made them mad but it's just because of the Wellbutrin

I am not happy how bipolar disorder is treated. A protokoll has to be created which puts an end to this disorder. My wife developed it when 60 years old and has got phases lasting euch about 3 years. Her doctor gives her Rivotril and
Seratralina and strong sleeping medicine in her present 3rd depression.
My question (I am almost certain that you cannot answer it) is how the old Chinese handled it or how Ayurveda is treating it ???
I am very sorry to show here my disappointment. I was 9 years old when getting narcplepsy + cataplexy. Today having reached 81 years no knowledge of its causes nor a final healing has been developed.

DXM put me back on track after being suicidal for years. Wouldn't suggest it for everyone though, it can be pretty hardcore.
Psilocybin tho shouldn't give you any problems. The best thing about it was the anxiolytic effects. Like a pat on the back from mother earth telling you to take it easy.
LSD is kinda too intense for me, even on much lower doses than psilo. Has a kind of synthetic feel to it that I just don't like. I feel manic clenching my jaw through it. But can still be really enjoyable.
MDMA also helped ease some tension from time to time, too. I love the introspection on it. But you can also roll with friends which makes it versatile. But I'd be careful with X. Never know what could be mixed in with the pills.

Lithium isn't a new treatment. in the 1980's they called every kid bi polar, except they called it manic depressive, and gave everyone lithium. it didn't work. or maybe that's because it was a wrong dx? Because my son took 2 meds, zoloft and mood stabilizer and he does great until paranoia and thought they were poison and my mother who has 3dx of histrionic pd, psychotic pd and narcissistic pd, decided it would be fun to tell him all the specialists and I have lied all his life and he doesn't need meds. now there are holes in all my walls, furniture destroyed and for the 2nd time in 7 months he is stuck across the country where he takes off with no plan or money and needs me to get him home. i have to get guardianship of my 21 yr old to have him put in a facility to get stabilized on meds and past the paranoia. lithium was never given to him.

Agree that it’s not a character flaw but it isn’t a chemical imbalance. Pharmaceutical companies used that phrase as a marketing tool in the 80s. Unfortunately it stuck. There isn’t one study that proves a chemical imbalance before starting medication. Medication, does, however has been proven in multiple studies to cause a chemical imbalance in the brain.
