Grimes performs "Be A Body" live in the KEXP studio. Recorded on 2/20/2012. Host: Cheryl Waters Engineer: Kevin Suggs Cameras & Editing: Jim Beckmann Photo: Morgen Schuler www.kexp.org/ www.grimesmusic...
I like her because she's so relatable... Like she fucks up the timing of her samples in the beginning and you and see her visibly distressed. That's so me as a musician.
I tried to do a live performance with a similar setup and it is so insanely difficult to concentrate on looping and singing and playing. Never again. It's like a miracle when things sync up.
I remember hearing this album and watching this performance for the first time in 2012. Really manic and confusing time of my life. Hearing this again provokes some painfully cathartic nostalgia. Selective memory just associates this sound with all the fun times, long nights with friends, or alone. The psychedelics, the feeling of actually being inspired, hopeful, angry, and passionate. Not knowing what was around the corner and that not realizing the most volatile time might have been the best time of my life. I saw her perform at Pemberton in 2014. All my buddies went to other stages. They didn't know or care for the music. They missed out. Thanks for the memories Claire :)
That says it all really, she was enjoying some cramped knees, stretched tendons and hamstrings and knobbly ankles and tapping those cute black tight enclosed Grimes feet. My Obsession is very granular and focused.
+SNOWMΛN She actually has a sweet voice... that could _definitely_ use some training. However, in more recent performances, while she's still singing out of key here and there, she seems a lot more confident and does so with certain "punky" IDGAF attitude that suits her music quite well. She also goes into all-out Banshee-mode more often.
Well this in an old comment but anyways she has said that producing and making the beats is more of her thing and singing feels sometimes uncomfortable to her. But I have to say I really like that "punk" feeling in her singing here, no matter if its a bit off key. She takes risks and not trying to be perfect. :3
I'm a bit late responding to this but what is the time stamp for the part where you can hear "100 days, 1000 years"? I don't ever really think it's necessary in most music that artists have to sing their lyrics to be completely clear and understandable. But I'm just curious about Grimes' lyrics because they're often so... cryptic... But still just as evocative as if you were hearing clearly sung lyrics with meaningful poetry. Sorry, this probably made no sense. I am also high lol
@@kmdn1 hey! It’s at the 6:55 mark. I love that you can’t understand most of her lyrics and some of her songs like Symphonia IX is so beautiful but the end as I describe it, is a spiraling dark hole or Darkseid, it’s super dark OR Urban Twilight, that’s a super dark song and I LOVE it. I also love listening to her music when I get nice and stoned lol.
@@Ryanlovestobake hi! :) You're totally right! "Hundred daaaaaaays.... Thousand yeeeeeeeeeeeaars" I do that while listening to music too. Even without any lyrics to give you a mental picture, somehow the music makes you conjure up very specific abstract mental images with a mood or feelings connected to it... Like when you see some image in a dream and for some reason it makes you feel terrified or happy or sad but you have no idea why. I just noticed in Symphonia IX she sings the words "dark side". . or darkseid?
@@kmdn1 I agree, and something about Grimes’ music just I can’t explain it, it fills me with so much happiness but other songs like Know the Way can make me so fucking sad and wanna cry, hahha. Oooo I think in Symphonia, she’s saying something like uhhh “to be in a dark side, be in a deep mind” that’s what I think she’s saying.
@@Ryanlovestobake it reminds me a bit of some Burial songs. That low synth line with weird vocals. Gotta love living in this day and age with so much music at our disposal
A young lady I know introduced me to Grimes and I'm hooked. She's very talented and her voice is hauntingly beautiful. It's always great to see how she does it. Amazing. 🌹
It took me two minutes to forget she was kneeling on the floor looping and to completely enter my imagination. Abd also I like her little foot tapping lol.
Pure Joy how does wealth affect music? If someone w rich supportive parents gets sent to school and makes music that sounds punk, is that punk? I’m not referring to this person, and I don’t know the answer to this question. But almost every musician today has gone to school to make music and I wonder what that does to music.
I see nothing wrong with her voice it's angelic in a way and unique. This video is a little jerky on the transitions because it's a live PA. Looks like she has a drum machine, Juno-G keyboard, guitar fx pedals, MIDI, def a sampler for all those triggered samples and a few other things I'm sure. So she's managing the timing of that equipment while she sings. Not sure if anyone noticed but that's a very very hard skill to master. In Ableton you have all your instruments and you work at one at a time to buiild a song. She's taking those machines and playing live.
Pure Joy This wave of "the shittier the more artsy it is" annoys the fuck out of me. It''s like the poop song Kanye just put out. Is that meant to question the idea of what is conformist as well? Please don''t be full of shit.
@@Abrahamhamham people ride Grimes so hard its crazy. Every comment section of vid of her live performances where she fucks up or doesnt sound great are filled with comments praising her on it. She could fling shit into the crowd and start scratching her pits while bouncing around like a monkey and some fans would act like it's some beautiful statement or "omg she messed up? THAT IS ACTUALLY AMAZING SHES SO HUMAN OMG I LOVE CLAIRE"
Проект с Канады, чуток раскручен в США. Супер музыка! Украина за вас. в массы по радио!!! Правда не многие эту музыку понимают, однако нужно её внедрять!!! П.С. Привет с Украины (P.S. Hello from Ukraine). P.C.C. Вас слушают на всех континентах. (You listen to all continents). The Best!
This version of Be a Body is incredible. Darker and more atmospheric.
You're a true fan
its a cacophony wtf are you on about "incredible"
It reminds of walking on Santa Monica beach in the summer evening 😍😍😍😍
I have to agree 100% it's so much better. this video was actually my first time hearing it
Me too and its the best version.
I like her because she's so relatable... Like she fucks up the timing of her samples in the beginning and you and see her visibly distressed. That's so me as a musician.
That to me is a shit musician. How can you fuck up basically doing nothing?
😊
The mug, the lamp, the wires, the litlle doodle in the wall with the flasher, the collection of rugs
EVERYTHING IS PERFECT
We’ll never see Grimes like this again probably, which is sad.
:(
:(
why not?
That's life, people change. I'm glad she made so many good songs in the past.
@Sorcerer I agree. The mainstream poison is seeping in.
I haven't fangirled this hard since Nirvana.
Urtė Katiliūtė foreal lmao same since Alice in chains layne days
💜💜💜

and cc.
Ya basic
Why is everyone saying she's out of tune? It just sounds different from the album version.. and it's amazing, at all.
👍
I love this performance...it's organic...it's lovely to see people work with their craft...we love her because she is herself x
It sounds more as if she's harmonising.
Reydson Lee she sounds fine to me idk
Nah it's just cos your tone deaf, haha
I come here at least once a week. Brilliant! I love her old stuff soooo much!
Be a body to this 8 minutes and 48 seconds each day and see results. Dang my heart is pumping. Thanks for the serotonin and inspiration Grimes 🙏
i dont know if people realize this, but this is so goth. i love this.
Watching her work on the song is like watching a sushi chef prepare your food
LOVE Grimes. She is a TRUE artist.
This is so good, I hope she isn't too hard on herself still. The groove is solid and her raw talent shows in these older videos.
This is Grimes at her greatest: a mad fucking scientist twisting knobs and shit, making something fucking beautiful.
8:02 when she looked up at the interviewer that was very adorable, shes like completely different after the performance
I tried to do a live performance with a similar setup and it is so insanely difficult to concentrate on looping and singing and playing. Never again. It's like a miracle when things sync up.
Loopers need a math brain. Mine is: not 😻
Hentai404 practice. I do it every day. It takes skill and dedication hahaha
you’ll get it eventually lol
no quantisation?
@@thetree9399 It didn't really exist in hardware at the time. It was doable through Ableton but I wanted to be non-laptop for some reason.
i love how real her performances are, i love when performances arent perfect it just is much cooler

05: 05 uwu she’s adorable
am i the only person who really likes the vocals in this?
yes
we checked and it looks like this is the case; those thirty likes on your comment were Russian bots
It's great has a punk feel. These kids don't know shit.
I think you are
Definitely not
I'm more fascinated by what she's doing rather than her actual singing.
It seems that nowadays she sings so much better
She's a pretty shitty singer, but her tracks sound cool as hell.

I wasn't into this kind of music before. GRIMES just popped my cherry.
She is 110% completly in the music...it's a joy to witness.
She reminds me of KraftWerk in their early years, a diamond in the rough.
Great sound scape.
I love how chanty and trancey this is ☁️☁️☁️🤗😍🧚🏻♀️🛸🔮
Some of her most genius and artistic work. Her older music is soooo much better than the newer stuff.
“100 days, 1000 years” I’ve never heard those lyrics until now and I’m high, y’all. Lol. Fucking love her!! Especially the dark and haunting shit.

phew this is so energetic yet so calming i’m so confused
At first her singing is surprising but it really grows on you. It's fascinating to watch her perform !
I came across BE a body after diving into Visions album. I had no idea Grimes was on this level a decade ago. WHAT THE HELL DID MUSK DO TO HER?
72 people did not close their eyes until they saw....
MrWitchman1967 hahahah 😂😂😂
Those same people think Pop music is music also...
Maybe they did close their eyes and missed the like button

When or if you're playing live deviations are what makes an artist.
I'm in love with this woman
shes so talented and cute :)
Ultra nice song
Singing out of tune is a deliberate punk thing... It's meant to question the idea of what is conformist just like everything punk is meant to.

lmfao, do you write bullshit like this all day? Her pitch perception is fucked because she has headphones on. if she could sing in tune she would.
