Listening to grimes in her early years and watching her feels like heart breaking feeling of watching videos Of an old friend and remembering overcoming times. I’m speaking for myself. I was depressed with a lot going on mentally. Very creative but troubled, overcoming addiction k heart broke with anxiety. Her music really helped me to just be myself . Be present , overcome and be myself. Really helped me is an under statement. Seeing her this way again is very very bittersweet. Such a weird feeling. I got saved in 2016 by the Lord Jesus Christ & only He truly healed my very soul & gave me a new spirit and way of thinking. I am free in Christ. I pray this for grimes. My first love in music.
@@naomidenisepinedaspirit At least we were alive to appreciate it while it was happening! Everything has to come to and end, ya know, and it's not a bad thing. Just cherish these moments and go on, seek the next special thing. Don't revel in the past. There's no need to feel sad or melancholic about anything: it was awesome, so look at the positive side.
For me, it was because in the thumbnails it looks like Cardi B or Niki Minaj, so I would have never clicked on it if I didn't stumble upon the thumbnail of this video that held an absolute charm to me... and I'm absolutely BLASTED. Great lesson about appearance ^^'
Writing music is not easy. People think they can just push play and do this. But, they forget she wrote every note and every beat, sings, and produces her work. That takes incredible skill and is a LOT OF WORK. Her music is unique and original and forward thinking. She is doing her thing, as opposed to most popular music today being over produced, repetitive and plastic and shit.
I'm trying to make music and it's so freaking difficult to not only find my sound but just produce stuff. I don't like having all of the things done for me, but like you said it takes a ton of work. I don't even know how to put this into words, god haha
Isn’t interesting that peeps have a hard time hearing her words? She is a musician. She just wants her voice to compliment the instruments of her sound. I’m waiting for a Björk and Grimes collaboration. Just think of the beautifully creative structures they could make. It would be one of the greatest musical endeavor ever! Keep on rockin Grimes!
actually it is difficult. she is doing it the hard way vs. playing on a prerecorded track she is actually initiating every part. this is much different than the current ways of dj's and hip hop that play on a back track. she is actually manipulating all the tracks dynamically which takes massive skill. yeah you could push one button and have everything done but she is doing it the traditional hard way and even playing the keyboard parts exclusively. definately an artist and not a back track singer. 100% look up keller williams or reggie watts for examples of the same thing.
exactly, if not crazy, definitely weird and not serious or "responsible" enough. But this is just normal human behavior, we just keep stereotypes in our minds for things we do not understand...it's like a defense mechanism we create to feel more comfortable with the uncertainty of it all.
beautiful. i had no idea she did all the cues, loops and keyboard stuff by her self. Wonderful to my ears. And as for her voice........ wow. Talented young ladayy we have here
I discovered you by accident while surfing for "Grimy Dubstep" beats...Best discovery ever!!!! My daughter (9yrs old) and I love you sooooo much. She sings your melodies all day. I never woulda thought I'd listen to art pop like Grimes or Bjork, but dame, they have a way of intertwining deep meaning into an easily accessible package.
I notice that most other musicians, when asked if their family/parents influenced their music, usually respond with big answers as if they're trying to prove that they have the "right upbringing" for a musician, knowing all the big legendary bands or solo artists, but Grimes is just like "yeah nah not really" and happens to have a much more free creative energy than almost any other musician I know.
album 1: 2010, album 2: 2011. album 3: 2012. --- it's obviously super impressive how she does this all by herself, but it doesn't take her THAT long to put it together.
+Joshua B Same. I had to get her album Visions shortly after that and now I'm a huge fan. Her music is so beautiful and she seems like a really sweet person. :)
@@ronrendon and you misogynistic swine that doesnt think about the fact that people love Lana for her voice, music and personality. Keep hating women on daily and drink hot dog water
Me personally, I think she's more of a person who loves to makes beats then sing. And that's not a bad thing. Her voice is not very strong but I think she puts it in her songs to give it something else. Not every artist has to be a great singer because being an artist can mean many things. Artists are people who use their creative minds to make things. That's an artist. This is just MY opinion.
I've never listened to music like this and I am completely blown away by how beautifully she performs. What a mysterious way about her beautiful voice and lyrics. I will be listening to more of her music. It has such a soothing effect that I haven't heard before.
How anyone would thumb this down is crazy. Soul-less. This is purity in her performance, tarnished and flawed, as how all music should be. Perfection in music can only be reached through using technology, like auto tune. That makes people lose their creativity and character. Flaws is what gives music personal character, and that is a beautiful thing.
@@sorr0we Not saying it is bad. Just saying that it reduces the character of a sound by introducing noise-reducer, cleans up the keys, ets. If this is the sound one desires, then it (autotune) is successful in its delivery. If not, then it isn't wise to use it.
So long as you keep track of your pre-recordings and have a good sense of timing then I believe anyone can do this type of shit. Notice I didn’t mention the art of singing in key, as it was clearly absent in this case.
This video kinda saved my life. A little over a year ago I was thinking about ending things. I decided if I had something to do to distract myself I would do homework. I began listening to grimes and I was fascinated because I had never heard sounds like these before. They sounded so much like my childhood yet grown up somehow. I found this video and it fascinated me and I didn't know why. Looking back maybe she reminded me of what it looked like to be an artist discovering something new. To be the unique person that makes people question them that I used to love being. I listened to the album every day to get me thru the school day. I listened to this video every night to fill the time waiting for my boyfriend to come home and call me. Instead I would fall asleep listening to this. A few months later I had the courage to break things off with him. And I had the courage to grow and do things on my own. I discovered traveling and hiking. I rediscovered my love for art and discovering new ways to make it. I am now finishing my first year of college for free, I have a job that I love, a side hustle which I'm passionate about, I've discovered how important it is to be there for yourself, and I make art regularly. Every day I get to discover new reasons I'm happy to be here, whether that's my upcoming graduation or that I got to lounge in pajamas all day today. TLDR Things get better! Hold on :)
Crazy how long ago this performance was. I remember seeing this and instantly thinking how cool it was because it was so raw and unconventional. Just chilling on the floor with gear spread out all over jamming out.
I like the fact that she created this interesting music sitting on the floor with her mug next to her, like any girl in her bedroom. Well done. Very talented person. It was interesting to watch the process.
I'm 27 years old and was raised in a family of musicians, I've never felt so inspired as I do here with Grimes. I've tinkered with so many different pieces of software and instruments and I really feel like I have a gift to give, and by being here with Grimes it's really helping me realize anything is possible.
You should look up "Just for Now" by Imogen Heap and watch the first video that pops up. It's like 12 or 13 years old. Anyway, it's her performing all by herself live at a radio station, similar to this. And similar to this, she various machines, software, and loop pedals and probably other pieces of machinery that I don't know the names of. The only difference between the two performances is that the entire song (including the music in the background) is completely comprised of sounds she is singing and snapping and clapping and shit like that. I love this video, but personally I love the other video I just recommended to you even more because I think it's hella cool and inspiring the crazy things one can produce by simply using a loop pedal, recording different sounds and simply layering them together in a particular order to create a dope song. Anyway yeah, you should totally listen to it and let me know what you think.
It's a massive shame her music dropped off so fast. Visions is SUCH an incredible, unique, fascinating, beautiful album and everything else since ranged from flawed to mediocre to contrived. She falls into those categories of artists who made one masterpiece of an album and could never come close to the same level again.
I'm a guy that was raised to keep his emotions in. I had this college sweetheart and we had a bad break up. For my own protection I sealed those memories. however these 30 minutes have ripped open that scar and the emotions fell out. I have never cried this way before. All 30 minutes I felt like grimes was passing me through a emotional juicer. I feel so amazing.... I've been listening to music for all my life and I can't believe that I can still find such rare talent. Gives me a reason to wake up in the morning. Thank you Grimes
This was where it all started for me...the first track...sitting on the floor in a massive coat and unlike anything I had heard before...the day that the word Grimes entered my vocabulary for the first time. Better times...
shes like a little 12 year old girl sitting on the floor playing with her toys, except the result isnt a pile of poorly drawn crayon houses. its an amazing wall of sound, its like if your ears could hear in colour. colour like what your brain just imagined the previously mentioned houses to be. :)
dudeathischair22 ...yasss.. ‘almost’ exaaactly how I think, and wrote using the SAME analogy to describe any music like this! It’s, ‘Painting with Sound’. You can look at all different paintings, whether it’s da Vinci.. or the ‘technique’ an artist uses to paint..abstract, ect.. or, by the 60’s Warhol’s subject of printing, silkscreen, which was known as the beginning of ‘Pop Art’. As the evolution of music kept evolving faster.., and what was being done in the recording studios, which really took off in the mid to late 60’s (developing sounds you cannot make with a voice or any instrument..recording talking but playing it backwards, then adding ontop laughter at super high speeds or slow..’n layering ‘n layering whatever you wanted)..which especially started off with the Beatles.. well, George Martin, really.. idk if the first was their Rubbersoul Album or not? .. but by the White Album and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, you really know what I’m talking about! Hence, today... we have every and any sound we want to make and layer, all at the touch of our fingertips (or feet/ toes). Which brings me back to painting.. and the imagination..layering.. until the painter is satisfied and he see’s his work come together. I always used to say, “Music is what feelings sound like.” I guess, in a way, what a painting does for the artist 🤷🏼♀️ But HOW do you SEE feeling..and emotion.. which is what, again, music brings out? It’s why ‘Music is the Universal Language.’ And an explanation .. for me as well.. was made into another beautiful analogy with what @dudeathischair22 wrote. In the 1960’s.. ‘n especially today.. we’re Painting with Sound.. the music being the paintbrush, ‘n are emotions are creating the ‘masterpiece’. **Edit.. yes, that was way too long. ‘N the whole ‘little history lesson’ about evolution of music in the middle of it, was distracting and sort of off track.. not explained well. Sorrr-aay** Either way.. I ❤️ loved your analogy. I jus wish I could make mine as short and to the point!
I regularly listen to about a dozen of her songs. I absolutely love her voice and the production quality of the accompanying music in those songs is just amazing.
Loved seeing this : after seeing her visually artistic videos, I could not tell if she really sung, composed, etc. Alone with her synth and mixers, singing live, awesome. The set-up here looks a bit like a subway artist. Respect.
KEXP has changed my opinion on so many artists it's almost hard to believe. Never cared for Grimes before watching this videos but the first three minutes alone shows that she is very talented, has an aesthetic and a vision which is crucial for any artist.

Grimes once said that she doesn't like calling herself a singer, but rather a producer who sings her own tracks
she sings, therefore she is a singer.

I really like her musical language. Her planet it’s so beautiful...
It’s amazing to watch here come up with this language live, i never heard anything like it before
Writing music is not easy.

Some people say that it takes no talent to perform this music live since she's mostly just pressing buttons but this looks hard as hell to me haha
HAHAHA ikr
actually it is difficult. she is doing it the hard way vs. playing on a prerecorded track she is actually initiating every part. this is much different than the current ways of dj's and hip hop that play on a back track. she is actually manipulating all the tracks dynamically which takes massive skill. yeah you could push one button and have everything done but she is doing it the traditional hard way and even playing the keyboard parts exclusively. definately an artist and not a back track singer. 100% look up keller williams or reggie watts for examples of the same thing.
Yes, is pretty difficult. Actually, those are Instruments as well. Instruments as = "tools" for music. Good music!
Nothing is difficult, if you got the skill and talent

I notice that most other musicians, when asked if their family/parents influenced their music, usually respond with big answers as if they're trying to prove that they have the "right upbringing" for a musician, knowing all the big legendary bands or solo artists, but Grimes is just like "yeah nah not really" and happens to have a much more free creative energy than almost any other musician I know.

Claire said something like this before that singing comes last to her.
Peggy Guillory Indeed. And I'd say that the music, if done in a certain way, can match up with a not quite perfect voice, to make it a great song.

Yesss great description
not the only way music can be perfect, theres such thing as proper technique. also, she does auto tune and distort her voice??
„Autotune bad“
It‘s not that simple
@@sorr0we Not saying it is bad. Just saying that it reduces the character of a sound by introducing noise-reducer, cleans up the keys, ets. If this is the sound one desires, then it (autotune) is successful in its delivery. If not, then it isn't wise to use it.
What flaws? Not familiar w the studio versions btw.

Hold on :)
Thank you for sharing your story, it’s helping me today.

Anyway yeah, you should totally listen to it and let me know what you think.

dudeathischair22 ...yasss..
I always used to say, “Music is what feelings sound like.” I guess, in a way, what a painting does for the artist 🤷🏼♀️
But HOW do you SEE feeling..and emotion.. which is what, again, music brings out? It’s why ‘Music is the Universal Language.’
And an explanation .. for me as well.. was made into another beautiful analogy with what @dudeathischair22 wrote.
Sorrr-aay**
Either way.. I ❤️ loved your analogy. I jus wish I could make mine as short and to the point!
😁👍
