Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

Instantly deleted? Well, you glorified pub bore, the walls and the battles are all Picts. Scots only began to arrive here from the 5th century onwards.By the time they had their first king - in the 9th century - they barely constituted 10% of the population. WE HAVE SOD ALL TO DO WITH THE ROMANS; WE ARE, BASICALLY, IRISH. Okay?!
That title is a bald faced lie, because when the Romans were in the British isles there was no such place as scotland, because the area known now as scotland only became scotland when the Ulster tribe of Scot’s(that should’ve been scoti) invaded the far north of Britain, and created what became scotland………….
And the term Picts is a Roman term for the most northerly of the British tribes, who painted woad pictures
(or possibly tattooed pictures, depending on the Roman source that you are reading, but some tattooing was used for pinpointing acupuncture points that were needed, at least five thousand years ago(which is 2.5 to 3 thousand years before the chinese supposedly invented acupuncture) which was shown to be a fact when they investigated the body of Oetzi who died five thousand years ago)
all over their bodies instead of being totally covered in woad, and they were not a part of the tribe from Ulster who were the original and only Scots(scoti)…………
And the scoti invaded from the 5th C to 7th C, which is where the term scotland comes from, and the confusion is caused by the use of the term latin scholars, who are just roman catholic priests who were basically lying to cover up the reality of their invasion………….
I'm really interested in the Picts , I live in Dundee. I love your stories
@@NorrinRaddNorrinRadd I find the use of woad by the Picts debatable.
Romans may have equated the paintings and tattoos with their use of it.
You are a true tribute to your beloved Scotland.
Excellent story telling Bruce. You actually sounded like you'd been there and experienced each and everry event that you described.

As a former educator I LOVE the narrative timeline format. Taking events and timelines and converting them to eras lived and the true people who occupied them. This is why historical preservation is such an important endeavor for all people and places. It’s one thing to read it in a book; quite another to dig through diaries, oral histories, study archaeological research and bring the voice of the past into the present.
Never thought I would have seen an Otago Highlanders jersey on this channel, great content as always, keep it up mate. Chur from New Zealand.

The best analysis of how the Caledonian tribes managed Roman aggression that I have seen. We know from the behaviour of invaders and defenders throughout history that those who flee advancing armies join with those who resist the invaders. Alliances are built and resistance strengthens. Invaders' supply lines get cut, trading ceases and occupation becomes untenable. If the Caledonian's had wanted to be Roman, north of Hadrian's Wall would have been indistinguishable from south of it. The fertile central lands of what are now East Lothian, Fife Angus and Aberdeenshire would have seen generations of Roman farms with villas, temples and baths. The old tribes said "no" to that, and with good reason. If they hadn't stood together, there would have been only one invasion and one long occupation of Caledonia. They clearly had a firm concept of "the north", held and shared by many clans, as being a single entity, when it came to defending it.
This was a great video, I always love hearing how Scottish tribes came together to fight off an impending invasion from army’s who came from overseas and took a foothold in the south to take us
The best ever. Great story, even greater story telling. Thanks Bruce.
Ah Mel, you are a gentleman

This for me is the best video you have done so far Bruce, I couldn't take my eyes or ears off it, simply love the format of this one. Almost felt like we were there with the characters you were portraying. Excellent!
I was born and live in Shetland. The broch of mousa is amazing I've had the privilege of working on its restoration a few years back.
If you travel to the village of mossbank and walk down to the lighthouse you will find the remains of another broch upon which the lighthouse was built a number of years ago.
The south end of Shetland and lerwick is bursting with well preserved ancient buildings, but as you travel north you will find that the local authority cares very little for preserving the past. It would be greatly appreciated if you made reference to this.
the broch features in one of the Ian Rankin stories, and also in a recent edition of Radio Scotland's Out of Doors.
Really enjoyed this one, thank you very much as always. English born and living in Shropshire but currently enjoying your content from the not so sunny Isle of Benbecula! Scottish culture really is my passion and I continue to enjoy my daily viewings of your videos!

If any of those wonderful videos have taught me anything, it's to get out of Glasgow and see the countryside. So much history in our soil.
Yeah man
I lived just north of Roman Road and walked along Antonine Road on the way to school. Almost 50 years ago in P7 we joined in and took part in excavation of a Roman Fort and Bathouse across from the School. I think I found some early twentieth century broken pottery and glass.
It’s was an interesting afternoon. I have been back and stood in the Old Roman Bath with my Canadian kids who had never seen anything older than about 150 years. We also visited the Antonine wall for a walk.
I always just figured the Romans Came, Saw, Decided the place was to much bother and Left.
Great video Mr Fumey, I hugely enjoyed it, living within a mile of the preserved section of the Antonine wall I was surprised by how so few of my school friends knew about it. Perhaps my advantage was that an unpreserved section ran along the boundary line of my Grandfathers back garden, being curious to the purpose of this abandoned strip of land he explained the story of the wall to me and if I walked a few miles I could see the preserved section. Game on.
A couple of years later a family friend took me shooting for the first time I was twelve and while walking up birds he asked if I was interested in history and knew about the local Broch, I don't know what was more fun that day, shooting the guns or walking on the rim of the remains of the at that time unvandalised Broch, thinking about it's location and the nearby Roman wall
Yes it's an amazing piece of history. My father also lived near the wall (Dullater) and we were always going for wanders up and down it.
@@liampaterson3424I'm glad our predecessors took the time to protect some of the better sections for future generations. The section I'm familiar with is just outside Bonnybridge running alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal. Those Romans had big ideas.....

You're the history teacher we never had Bruce, to be fair, Mr. Davis, Brynn, was a good history master and would regale us with tails of daring do by Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, even the Welsh kings and I think made some mention of the Celts of the North and Ireland. He wasn't keen on the English so as part Scot I was safe, especially being from the Gales and the other side of Kernow, the Kernowek closer relations of the Cymraig. I used to be able to speak quite some Cymraig as a boy.
This section of Scots history I knew some of but not enough, thanks for filling in my gaps. I really liked the quotes as the descendants of past kings, it brings it all to life. Julius Caesar got his arse handed to him by the English the first time around, but that pales in comparison to Scotlands three times with different generals.

The Romans, according to the maps, advanced through the fertile farmlands right up the North East of Scotland. The Picts made use of the mountains in the highlands which the Romans seemed to have a problem with. Seems like the Picts were well organised and had a well thought out sustainable plan that the Romans couldn't figure out.
If the Romans really put their backs into it we all know what would have happened. They were very good at figuring other people out eventually. But Rome had troubles back home civil wars and such. Romans fought more lethal and more ruthless enemies.
No danger the Scots would’ve seem em off .
I was just talking about this the other day!

Great video, as always! I really enjoy your videos. Being of Scottish descent, I started playing snare drum with the Cameron Highlanders Pipe Band of San Diego in 1973, until 2017. There's one detail in this particular video that I believe was not brought up though. God. King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. A Scottish king becoming king of England? He was used by God to bring the world the most powerful and popular book the planet has ever seen, the Authorized Version of 1611, though these days it is commonly referred to as the King James Version. I believe that this is a crucial part of Scottish history. Again, great video! Keep up the good work!!
King James sold Scotland freedom to the English. We are still trying to free ourselves

A bit off topic (and I'm not sure I haven't mentioned it before), but I wonder if you've ever considered Farley Mowat's _The Farfarers_ ? His thesis is that islanders from the Shetlands and Orkneys were the first to voyage to Iceland, and later Greenland and North America, before the Norse.
Mowat, another great storyteller, who does not shy away from emotion.
Wow. I've been watching Bruce's videos for quite some time now.
I've learned a lot, and enjoyed many of the more lighthearted tales.
But this one? Truly a powerful piece of storytelling.
Wow, thanks!
Loved the first person family storytelling you did here it's extremely creative.
Well a Roman legion vanished in the Caigangiorians near Glasgow Scotland, and so has other people too🥺😱🤨 the movie the Eagle is somewhat based on that.
Not a bad film.
Surprisingly a decent movie
I take it by the Caigangiorans, you mean the Cairngorms and they are a long way from Glasgow. The Legion you are talking about was the 9th Hispana (origins in the name) and they were not lost in the Cairngorms. No one knows wether they were harried while not drawn up for battle by which they would have been unready when attacked. OR, - they were some myth that has quite possibly grown out of organisational irregularities in Roman admin. It is hard to beleive that a Legion of over 5500 battle hardened troops could have not at least a handfull of survivors. It is also unlikely that they were not accompanied by auxiliaries who also would have numbered in their thousands. This type of thing can be verified by visiting The Huntarian Museum in Glasgow University, who have been excavating Roman remains in Scotland for some sixty years at least.
Rosemary Sutcliffe's novel was certainly ahead of its time, I remember she also set a novel about the Arthurian era...
Fascinating presentation. I’m going to save it to watch again.. before we leave for Scotland next week. 🇨🇦
