Great reaction Liz. You hit it right in every respect. Each of these versions is unique and special in its own way. I too prefer the piano version in the church but i applaud Angelina for providing us with another version to enjoy as well. Angelina brings the lyrics and meaning of the song to life as only she can.
Both these covers are glorious but I prefer the stripped down version, it lets her voice absolutely shine. Thanks to Toby for asking AJ to sing this reinvented cover of his song for his Piano Diaries album. Toby is quoted saying, “Working with Angelina has been nothing short of inspiring. Both versions are beautiful... It caters to both who want intimate performances and to those who want a chill music video. Nice reaction Liz! On the piano is the co-writer of the song, Toby Gad. Just to let you know, the other co-writer of the song, BC Jean, was the first to sing the song as well as the person the song came from. She had just broken up with the man that she loved. Per Toby, he played it for Beyonce one day and she really wanted to sing and use this song, and the rest you say is history. Angelina and Toby have been working together for a while now and are creating new music for her to sing. They teased a song at a special event called Bad Valentine and it should be coming out within a few months. This collaboration is awesome! The Piano Diaries is Toby's project of other singers singing his most famous songs. Angelina of course is singing this song made famous by Beyonce.

You freeze ... endlessly listening to her wonderful voice and admiring her fantastic musical sensitivity, even the simplest song that passes through her hands becomes fantastic. She is simply unique and with a wonderful melodic perception. This interpretation (not a cover for me) with one of the authors of the song (Toby Gad) playing the piano, is curative for the your soul and the soft background accompaniment of the piano and cello give her a beautiful silky backdrop, until that wonderful whispered final phrase "... but you are just a boy". Angelina is the answer to any person having a bad day. Almost instant joy to the sound of that gorgeous voice, a voice that always reaches your heart. I get lost in the beauty of it all--this was a beautiful production and performance. I really expect this to be a magical year for our barefoot princess. Angelina is a story-teller supreme, gifted with a voice like none other. Collaborating now with Toby Gad only adds to the excitement of her future releases. Although I love anything Angelina, I much prefer the 'church' version to this 'walking' version...probably makes me older than dirt.

On Thursday June 20 at Herb Alpert's Vibrato Grill & Jazz in Los Angeles Toby Gad will be appearing. The show is A Night With Toby Gad “Piano Diaries Live”. It’s an event for charity. No info on who the performers will be but I would assume it would be the same as on his Piano Diaries album which would mean Angelina singing If I Were a Boy. I guess we’ll find out soon.
What a wonderful reaction Liz! I'm with you that she is a great story teller. She uses a lot of her speaking voice and it is as she's having a conversation with us. Her low tones, vocal fry gives that emotional feel and her high tones are strong. She changed the feel of the song, fantastic job.

Music wise I do like the first video more than te second one, but they are both awesome and each for a different public. The song was written in 2008 by Toby gab (a German/Danish songwriter) and singer/songwriter BC Jean, who was the first one who performed the song. Beyoncé was the second singer, also in 2008. Toby Gad discovered Angelina and he has asked her to perform it for his project "Piano Diaries". And it seems that Angelina has found a new "Angel" in the ranking: Toby and Angelina have performed the song several times now, they are writing/composing new songs for Angelina together, he play's the piano in the first video and he has filmed and produced the second video (which is filmed in the streets of London (UK)), which is now declared the official music video of this song.. So serious things are going on now. One or two days ago Angelina has been interviewed on Norwegian television (video is online and it has "cc" in English). I promise you, she has both: a wonderful singing voice and a beautiful speaking voice, but as she speaks and you have never heart of Angelina? You would not guess that she is one of the finest vocalists on the planet. That difference is enormous.

Agree with you 100%. Both versions are incredible but I think I prefer the stripped down version mainly because you can hear the details and nuances in her voice more clearly. The second version seems to definitely be geared towards a younger audience both in the instrumentation and video style which I think is a smart move.

A cover only in the sense that what Beyoncé made was a cover of the song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, originally performed by Jean in 2008. Beyoncé's cover was that same year.
In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the fourth version I have heard. I am not sure if it is really a cover when a singer is standing next to the composer as they jam to create a different version of the song.

Same vocal track as the diaries version, but the instrumentation makes it more uptempo. Pure genius! The only downside is you can’t hear the little nuances that separate Jordan from all the other female singers on the planet. Guess she’ll have to release two versions of every song from now on lol!
