We were camping at Deep Creek Campground in the Smoky Mountains last week. We kept watching the weather and packed up and left out Thursday morning at 4:30am after the 1st rain event ended and before the hurricane rains started. Thank God we left when we did. We were walking around your beautiful little town all day Wednesday. We went to Darnell Farms on Wednesday too. I hate to see the damage. I hope no one was killed there. God Bless Bryson City. Praying for you guys.
I've camped at Deep Creek with family several times. One of our favorites cuz there's something fun for everyone not far away. You made a wise decision to leave when you did.
Thanks for this. My grandfather built the bidg where the chinese restaraunt is and ran his furniture store there for 40 years. He built the house next door and that's where they lived. My mom taught 3rd grade on school house hill during ww2.
So sorry to hear about this. We got hit in Georgia as well. Sending up prayers for all of our states affected! North Carolina,South Carolina,Tennessee,Georgia,Florida and Virginia 💔💔💔🙏🙏🙏🙏
So glad you, your Sister and Mom are safe. I thought of you through the day and kept looking to see if you had posted. And I didn’t forget Kody either 🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕
My heart breaks for everyone who lost everything in this storm. Two of my favorite places to visit North Carolina and Tennessee. Never seen destruction like this in my 43 years on this earth in these two states that I love. Hopefully the government will step up and help rebuild and help these individuals in need who lost everything. Prayers go out to the families who lost loved one's as well.
Thank you for showing this, Melissa. We all need to be praying for everyone affected by this terrible storm and if anyone is able, maybe make a donation to some relief effort organization. It's important to see what other people are going through because any one of us could be touched by a disaster at any time. I'm glad you & your sister sit up a little higher and didn't suffer any damage. It just hurts to think of what so many people are going through. Sending love & prayers for all!❤🙏
It's devastating. No other words for it. So many towns, gone!!! It's unreal to think that a hurricane can affect us way up here in the mountains of NC/TN. 😢😟
Glad to see Bryson City made it through. Spent years out there building log homes and helping GSMR. Yes, the Tuckaseegee is prone to flooding. Have seen it multiple times over the tears.
That's why i thought of posting, nobody talks about all the towns affected. I know they focus on Asheville, but so many other towns were destroyed. Not us, thankfully, but i was scared for a bit. We were lucky. Real lucky.
Thank you for the video, I have spent some 30 years coming and going to Bryson City with wonderful memories memories..So glad it's not as bad as I imagined. My thoughts and prayers to all affected by the storm .😢 God Bless you. Judy from Boca
I'm English. I Love Bryson City, genuinely love the place. It has nice shops ,steam trains ( big kid that I am), terriffic scenery. and most of all wonderful people.
God bless the people in NC, TN, FL, and GA affected by the storm. My wife and I have been to the area many times staying in Bryson City or Almond and section hiking some of the AT and other trails nearby. We love the area and the people and pray for their safety and recovery. Even when staying in Almond, we usually come in Bryson City to shop, buy the home bottled olive oil and eat breakfast. Always so good.
I don’t live there but I’ll never forget this hurricane and all the havoc wrecked on many states. Prayers to the deceased families. I couldn’t cross that bridge.. 😳😬
I love this town. I worked as a raft guide on the Nantahala river. And spent a lot of time in Bryson City. I still visit, including a few months ago.. I will pray for all of western NC and East TN hit by the storm. As a whitewater kayaker, I've seen many floods. But none as big as this one, across the area.
Did NOC come out of Helene ok? I can’t imagine what the Tuck and Lake Fontana looked like then & now. Horrific flooding thousands will be missing (deceased) just devastating
Thank you so much for this post. I hope you are able to post again. husband has family off Buckner Branch. We had a small place there until last year. I just love Bryson. Praying
We were just up there at Deep Creek the first week of August this year, my heart is totally broken. I pray with God’s help and the will of all yall up there in Bryson City, you can rebuild, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone effective
I guess they had to make a choice to release some of the water, or risk the dam collapsing which would have been much worse. As long as it was damage to buildings and property and no human lives were lost, that was a win, since as you said, it could have been much worse.
NC needs to be looking at their overall infrastructure. Eastern Carolina was sacrificed to Raleigh in previous major storm event, and it has taken years to recover. Little towns and farming communities don't have the same clout.
Melissa very sad what Helene has caused for so many in the southeast seems Tennessee & North Carolina suffers the brunt of it. I am glad for you that you are on higher ground. But the clean up will have a lot of effect on goods & service for a period of time. Stay safe!
We’re okay! Our sewage/water system is very large and advanced so it was able to alleviate SOME of the flood waters but the Oconaluftee was still incredibly high and dangerous! 😬 Some minor damage to our island parks and a couple of houses but overall we are okay. I heard Soco was hit the worst. And that there was a massive landslide blocking the mountain road even still. But as far as I know we didn’t have any deaths or missing people. A few were hurt but only a small handful. Overall? We are doing pretty good… Especially considering how bad it was/is elsewhere… 😕😞. Edit: The Tribal Internet somehow managed to stay up the whole time! Which allowed people to still get help mostly, even though phone service and satellite was down.
I'm glad to hear you're OK over there. I'm going to try and drive a few places to look, even though it's a few days later. The water here is still high, nothing like it was. But, i didn't want to go explore too much right when it was getting bad! I went home, stayed there! We thought the bridge here would wash out! They were yelling at people to get off the bridge. It got real scary for a while. It could have been so much worst here.

Before moving to Florida 40 years ago I lived in Nashville and Bryson City was our go-to place for vacation. We always stayed 3-4 weeks at the Deep Cheek Campground just down the road from the park entrance. I have fond memories of that area and hate seeing what's happened. We have been through a lot of hurricanes here in S.W. Florida including a direct hit from Hurricane Ian 2 years ago at this same time of year. As bad as that was what I'm seeing on the news in Western N.C. is worse. I wish all the good people of N.C. a speedy recovery.
Hello! Thank you for posting this. It's absolutely devastating. I am a subscriber to the @PerkinsBuilderBrothers page and there are a million plus people that have fallen in love with your little piece of paradise. Everyone hopes the emergency supplies and crews get to you soon.
Hi Mellissa!! Watching now. Cell towers still out in western NC. I got gas at Hotspot. Some pumps were out of diesel & some out of regular with ethanol. I got regular without ethanol whatever that means. Someone said tankers can't get through to this area to deliver. You captured this well. The cleanup is horrendous. Please stay safe. 💕
I just got gas a bit ago at citgo! Line, u can only get 20 bucks worth so i don't really want to waste gas. There was almost a fight when i was there, i was like oh boy....i just want gas and out of there lol
Seen more fights at that Hot Spot over fuel than you can imagine. 😅 Glad to see Bryson City still in on piece. ❤ Wasn't born there, but have always considered Swain County as "home."
I was just in Bryson City last month, my third visit there in the last four years. Such a beautiful area to visit. Rode the GSMR Nantahala Gorge train route and visited NOC. Sad to see the devastation that Helene brought to the Smoky Mountains area and all of NC and TENN. May God be with you all.
Thank you for sharing! My family rents a cabin on a creek on Issac Wiggins Road every December when we come for the Polar Express and I’m hoping that the house hasn’t been washed away and that the family who owns it is okay!
Oh no! You’re right it could have been so much worse. I’m so glad our little town was spared! Hi Melissa, wow this storm did a lot of flooding. My prayers go out to everyone affected by this. I'm glad you all are on higher ground and are ok. Take care, hug Kody tight for me. 🙏
Been to Bryson City a few times, The most dry and safest place is if You can believe it unless They get a mud slide is of All places the Cemetery!! Unreal! Wish everybody the best.
Thanks Melissa. I did see a video that showed Sylva being flooded next to the paper mill there in the curves. I also saw a picture of that small dam on the Tuckasegee there at Dillsboro. It was coming over pretty good, but no pictures of town or down next to the Best Western. Not sure of the name of the creek that runs behind downtown Sylva and into Dillsboro. I'm sure it was up fairly high, too. Stay safe!! Be careful!! Shane W
Came across your video and subscribed to your channel. So sad and devastating what's happened. My thoughts and prayers are for all affected by Hurricane Helene.
I was in Bryson City in 2018 and rode the GSMRR excursion steam train. It's a wonderful small town, and had a lot of charm. I'm glad they didn't have the same fate as some of the other towns further in the mountains. The river there crested a few feet below the flood of record. The French Broad river upstream of Asheville actually crested around 10 feet higher than the previous flood of record for that river. Definitely Could have been much worse for Bryson City. Thanks for the video!
We just rode the train at Bryson back in March and we walked those very streets that are now flooded. As we rode the train and saw all the beautiful creeks and waterfalls, I understand how all the large amounts of water flowing off the mountains would cause gentle streams and creeks to become raging torrents.
Wow thanks for sharing. I am praying for all in East TN and Western NC my sister friend lives in Marion NC and they are okay. One of their sons lives in Asheville and he is okay too so incredibly devastating for so many folks 😢❤🙏
I sure hate to see Bryson City like this. Praying for all to recover. My dad was born there in 1931 and lived and raised in Alaska. I personally haven't been there since 1974 , but I will never forget the beauty of the area and lots of family.
I'm in Florida and only 20 miles from the west coast and barely got wind or rain. My heart goes out to you people up there as that place was my go to place if my place in Florida got destroyed by a hurricane.
I've a lot of cousins & their familys in Bryson, any word from the Crisp folks would be most appreciated. & how did the old Calhoun House fair the storm & floods?
This was from Friday, i could just post now, we still have no cell service here. The water has gone down. Thankfully, it could have been much worst. I think some stores in town suffered some damage, but i haven't heard ant other damage except maybe right on the river.
I've only lived here, just about 2 months now, so i don't really know anyone. I'm sorry! I know i can go to the library for a signal, many people go there to check in with family...
I'm speaking from experience it's going to take a very very long time dealing with insurance companies I'm not going to mention the insurance company but it rhymes with State Farm
Prayers for Bryson City!! We’re in the Greenville SC area. Haven’t had power since Thursday, I think!! Just now able to get here online, and that’s only with 2 bars!! Gasoline and ice seem to be the most-needed things right now. They’re saying we “might” get power by Friday!! Yes, we have LOTS of trees over, but the worst part is that there are still fallen trees resting on power lines!! Where are the power company trucks??!!! They can’t get the power back on until the trees are removed from the power lines!! We still have traffic lights out on main thoroughfares. It’s ridiculous!!
Glad your love ones are safe. Prayers going out for you all. Thanks for sharing as I have a reservation in the future, and thinking about canceling due to a potential new system coming up. I know what you are going through I been in Florida since the 1980’s. Stay strong.
I graduated high school here. Crazy to see the water that high. The road by the old dollar general is across from the Depot “flooded” often but went away after a couple hours.. this’ll probably be dayss Sad to see that happened to Darnell farms. I hope they can recover quickly.
Thank you for the update. We were wondering how Downtown was. We own property there and was wondering. Do you happen to know what it looks like over by the Old Ice Plant?
I don't know where the old ice plant is, I'm sorry, I'm still new here. If u give me the name of the rental, i can see if i can find it if it's in downtown. Having no sell service is hard, i can't Google anything and i don't know where everything is.
Bryson is ok. I want everyone to know that. I'll do an update video as soon as i can. This was from Friday. People are canceling reservations, I've heard, and that doesn't help this little town. They need people to visit, to come here and spend money. Some stores had damage, yes, but everyone is working together to help each other. Like i said, I'll do an update video soon to show ya'll too. 🩷
@@italian_grlthe towns may need tourist dollars, but with so many roads and bridges out, would it be advisable? According to NDOT, currently, All roads in Western NC are considered Closed due to the extensive damage and destruction. Emergency vehicles only.
Very nicely done video with the captions. This has been an unbelievable event. We were just on the edge here in Shelby, NC. Hard to imagine how it will be in the tribulation when it is like this everywhere. Prepare NOW so you will be "safe in the arms of Jesus."
Thank you so much! I just read a few rude comments about how i need to learn to edit, be a professional. LOL okkkk I'm not by any means a pro here. I do this for fun. I don't make a ton of money doing it, and i can't afford to buy expensive editing software. The day this is my job, and i make good money, then I'll worry about that. 🤣so thank you for your comment, I appreciate that. I also can't do much cause we have no service yet either here. 🩷
Friend of mine lives next to the river in Bryson City and said the river didn't jump the banks. Thankfully, Bryson City didn't experience what many other towns did by only a few feet.
Oh it could have been much worst, we all know that, but it was close. Very close. And for me being from Indiana, this was scary. We never dealt with hurricane remnants up there. It did flood in town, business were damaged, but it could have been much worst. I thought it might take out the bridges, it was so close! And that water pressure slamming in to it for days, not good. I still worry crossing it. Smh.
💔💔💔 this little town is one of the best kept secret places in western North Carolina... I'm so sorry. My daughter and I love to go there and ride the train in the fall. I'm so sorry for you all the were praying for you all.
Sorry to see the flooding, but thankful the town is still there, unlike many others. My wife and I first went to the Dillsboro /Bryson City area in April 1997 for a ride on the GSMR. Since that first trip, we and our 2 boys (now 21 and 24) have taken every vacation up there. We've been there twice this year and will be back again in January for our anniversary, if we can get there. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Wouldn't mind living there one day. Have you heard any news about Dillsboro? Any videos, any damage? Thanks! I enjoy your videos!!
Oh yes!!! It is better now. I'll do an update video as soon as i can. This was from Friday. We have no cell service yet though. So many other places in western NC were hit harder than us. Stores are open, some only taking cash. Like i said, I'll try and do an update video soon. We are ok here. 🩷
NDOT (NC Dept. Of Transportation). According to NDOT, currently, All roads in Western NC are considered Closed due to the extensive damage and destruction. Emergency vehicles only. I just looked this up, it's true and factual. Please don't go anywhere in Western NC if you're from out of town until NDOT says it's OK.
Will do. I don't want to. I'm nervous! I can't work anyways, i need cell service to do orders so I'm screwed anyways. Smh. I'll just do yt videos. Around here of course. Cherokee, whittier... not farther. I know things are still a mess.
Wow, I didn't realize how bad it got down there! You weren't joking. And I'm kinda surprised that bridge is still open to traffic. I don't think I would cross it.
We don't have a choice!!! My anxiety is so high over that too. I did not go over it when the water was right there, crashing in to it!!! Nope. 😳😲I'm still nervous going over it! How do they know it's safe, that was a lot of pressure on that bridge for at least 2,3 days!!!
So sad to see! I bet the Nantahala River flooded. Is the Nantahala the river that you usually take Kody to? That may too much of a river to take him. Hate seeing all those campers flooded. Some people live in their RVs so it may be everything they own under water. So heartbreaking when you think of all the people that have lost homes and lives! Glad you and your family are all safe! Glad your tiny homes are on higher ground! I've had to evacuate several times living on Hilton Head Island. It gets expensive between food, gas & hotels when you have to leave your home! Glad you & your sister didn't have to incur that expense!

I’m only 15 minutes away in Cherokee. Perhaps I’ll make a trip over there soon.
Shane W
I'll be checking things out when i go to sylva today. First time heading that way in a week. Hopefully cell service works there too.
So happy you, sister and Mom are safe Take care.
I just got from Bryson City. So sad to see this. I wish you guys a speedy recovery and please stay safe.
Came across your video and subscribed to your channel. So sad and devastating what's happened. My thoughts and prayers are for all affected by Hurricane Helene.
🩷🙏
I was in Bryson City in 2018 and rode the GSMRR excursion steam train. It's a wonderful small town, and had a lot of charm. I'm glad they didn't have the same fate as some of the other towns further in the mountains. The river there crested a few feet below the flood of record. The French Broad river upstream of Asheville actually crested around 10 feet higher than the previous flood of record for that river. Definitely Could have been much worse for Bryson City. Thanks for the video!
Yes, for sure. It definitely was scary, and it was so close to being much worst. I heard chimney rock is gone. So much devastation.
Yes, it is heartbreaking. I heard chimney tops is gone. So much heartbreak and devastation. Here, and in east TN.
Sadly, insurance companies will not pay anything if the damage was due to flooding. You have to have a flood insurance policy from the government.
PRAYING for ALL from Michigan

Glad your love ones are safe. Prayers going out for you all. Thanks for sharing as I have a reservation in the future, and thinking about canceling due to a potential new system coming up. I know what you are going through I been in Florida since the 1980’s. Stay strong.
My mother and grandparents lived here but that was many years ago. Praying 🙏
😢we love to vacation there, praying for everyone there 🙏 God bless 💕
We just left two weeks ago from spending the summer there. Great town how was deep creek coming out of the park?
Deep creek is fine!
Me and my bestie took the train in Bryson city 😢 my heart is broken to see such devastation. My prayers are with you all.
I was standing on that little look out area during this hurricane. To see the water was very scary for me.
I graduated high school here. Crazy to see the water that high. The road by the old dollar general is across from the Depot “flooded” often but went away after a couple hours.. this’ll probably be dayss
Sad to see that happened to Darnell farms. I hope they can recover quickly.
Thank you for the update. We were wondering how Downtown was. We own property there and was wondering. Do you happen to know what it looks like over by the Old Ice Plant?
Downtown is ok. Some stores had water
I plan on doing a video showing what town looks like now, as soon as i can.
I don't know where the old ice plant is, I'm sorry, I'm still new here. If u give me the name of the rental, i can see if i can find it if it's in downtown. Having no sell service is hard, i can't Google anything and i don't know where everything is.
The water has gone down though, we were lucky that way
Thank you for responding. It is actually close to Darnell Farms. There is a gas station at the corner of Main St which is Hwy19 and Kirkland Creek Rd.
This breaks my heart. My family and i have gone to Darell farms several times. It is one of our favorite places to go.
I drove by Darnell farms today, i think they're open and doing well. They did get damage, but they are doing OK.
We were just there late June! Camped Deep creek, walked town. Was thinking of returning Oct 😢
@@italian_grl Good news, but I kinda feel bad taking trip for enjoyment when so many are suffering 😒
@@italian_grlthe towns may need tourist dollars, but with so many roads and bridges out, would it be advisable?
According to NDOT, currently, All roads in Western NC are considered Closed due to the extensive damage and destruction. Emergency vehicles only.
Beautiful little town, we took a ride on the smoky mountain railroad that originates there
Very nicely done video with the captions.
Thank God you are safe!
Smh.
Glad y'all are safe.
Hows it looking up there?
It's fine today. On Monday. I'll do a video walk through town later when i can! It's actually a bit sunny, for the first time.
Bryson City had a devastating flood in 1940. In 1916 Western NC had a catastrophic flooding around Asheville, not sure how Bryson City was affected.
💔💔💔 this little town is one of the best kept secret places in western North Carolina... I'm so sorry. My daughter and I love to go there and ride the train in the fall. I'm so sorry for you all the were praying for you all.
Prayers for everyone!
I'm not sure about dillsboro, sylva...i have not made my way that way yet. I heard they got flooding too. I don't have tv so I'm not sure.
Wow prayers for all of them
I'm supposed to visit here oct 25.. do you think it will be okay then?
Oh yes!!! It is better now. I'll do an update video as soon as i can. This was from Friday. We have no cell service yet though. So many other places in western NC were hit harder than us. Stores are open, some only taking cash. Like i said, I'll try and do an update video soon. We are ok here. 🩷
Darnell farms though, idk. They were hit kinda hard but i think they're getting help from people, trying to get hayrides up again soon. Etc.
Travel in Western NC is “prohibited” right now!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you get any water in your tiny house?
No, she didn’t
@@eleanormassaro5195 thanks. I thought she said they didn’t. But wasn’t sure
Bryson City was flooded worse then that back in 1940's. You can read about it and see pic of it in the Swain County Museum right there in Bryson City.
Thanks for sharing this
Who’s here for the Perkins bros?
Stay safe and God bless!
