6 or 7 years ago, I broke down in Erwin and had to spend two days waiting on repairs. It was the most unlikely place to become my favorite southern town because frankly, I'd never even heard of it until then. It did though., it became a destination for me. Those two days are some of the fondest travel memories that I'll ever have. The people of that town are top notch. Damn! What a mess! That building at the beginning, at 17sec., Is the Erwin Hospital!😢😢❤️…At the 35 second mark, that T-shaped foundation is the USA rafting headquarters (gone). At the 2:45 minute mark, all that yellow and white plastic piping came from the Polypipe USA plant 1/4 mile up river, the building with the silos. And at 7:56 minutes, in the lower left corner, the red and blue roofed building, is the Appalachian Trail Hostel! The bridge crossing the river there is gone!
I'm curious. What are these "prayers" for? I mean, the disaster has already struck. Seems a little late to be asking the sky daddy to do anything now, don't you think? Also, if God has a supreme plan for everything, this has to be part of it, right? Why not say "Thanks for the water" and call it a day? It's pretty obvious humans are on their own on this rock.
Never ever thought I would see this scene in East Tennessee. As bad or worse than anything I have ever seen in Florida. Incredible footage and incredibly sad video footage . 😢😢😢
I’m over on the NC side….just north of Asheville. I live about a quarter mile from the French Broad and, obviously, we have seen massive flooding and other damage here. So sad to see the Irwin & Unicoi areas so damaged. Prayers for all those affected by this storm!
I happened upon Erwin one year, while looking at property further east. My first thought was....this is a place where I would love to live. Ended up in Sevierville but have thought of this lovely place often. Seeing this, breaks my heart. Prayers for the residents of this awesome little town.
Thank you for posting. The destruction is unimaginable. The livelihoods of so many is gone. Just the roads and bridges alone for people going to work will be on hold for a long while. Pray for our people and little Town.
This strech of I 26 between Johnson City and Asheville is one of the beautiful spots in our country. Just came through here two weeks ago and always stop in Erwin on our way to pick up 81 North. The people are awesome and although this is heartbreaking to watch, they will land on their feet and rebuild. So glad your hospital was evacuated successfully. God Bless .
Incredible footage. I am in South Florida and have been dealing with Hurricanes for a long time, since Andrew. We have had rain events like that not even tropical storm-related the last two years that dumped so much rain so quickly that it turned our airport into a lake for a day. You add hills and mountains. Wow, those rivers.
as horrifying as this imagery is, footage like this will be absolutely critical in the years ahead! seeing the path of the water and the high points will be fantastic for future reconstruction plans including better run off management! thank you for this footage!
The church still standing next to the river brought chills through my body as I thought of in troubled times turning to the Lord Jesus Christ Son of God for strength, hope, and wisdom. For He will never forsake you. He is merciful. Amen 🙏
In Miami, Florida and Hurricane Andrew survivor among a few others! Feel for evryone going through this tough time! Be thankful for there are those who did not make it! One thing ive witnessed in times like this is how people find away to come together and help each other!
So devastated. The entire Appalachian Trail is closed from mile 0 to 864. Historic loss for these communities. And I just got to witness how kind they are on my thru hike this year.
God will give you strength and mercy for your community. Keep the faith, look for the blessings in the comming days . Don't despair on what's gone, God will replace with better. Love ones that need you more now . Learn more about yourself and how to open your heart for God. Blessings and peace to you all.
Complete devastation..I hope folks impacted by this finds the strength and means to push on and rebuild. Life can turn upside down in a blink. Appreciate the sun on your face and the innocent laughter of a child..nobody knows when life will deal you this type of blow. 💪 🙏
I honestly don’t know that I would suggest rebuilding at least not in the same place since this type of storm may just become more common. This is the reason rule America is becoming a place people move away from because natural disasters and man-made, disasters, and businesses being destroyed will kill these small towns.
@@dwainschumer9298 No place is safe anymore. I grew up in Louisiana and on the coast of N.C. I now live part time in South Korea. The typhoons here are just as destructive as our cat 3/4. Boone and Asheville will rebuild bc it's tourist attracted. The folks that live in the small hollars and dirt roads they too will rebuild bc too them they are living the life they love. Small town, modest living and surrounded by neighbors and folks who are like minded. I agree it's a small business killer but also those that work blue collar trades will flourish from rebuilding, clearing up etc. It'll be hard going for many but believe me when I tell you country folks can and will survive friend. I just hope after this they utilise some type of aqua-ducting system in the future to stave off this sort of thing for flood control measures.
Yes. They will rebuild. In Texas 33 years many rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt with our hurricanes. I’ve experienced 5 hurricanes in my house but not this level of destruction. Just tons of cleanup. Spiritual warfare going on strong now. A time to truly seek who’s best to be leading this country. My answer is God’s choice. Trump.
God bless the people of Unicoi County and Erwin. We're from Buncombe County in NC and we got hit hard but not that hard. The great people of TN are in our prayers. Pray also for those serving us and trying to get our lives back to normal.
Praying for the well being of many that have lost homes, jobs, businesses,churchs,hospitals..so sad but so reality.. America is divided on stupid things while our own fellow citizens are suffering devastations all around us..Lord please help your people realize whats important greater than race and politics right now, help us to love, pray, and help one another
Praying is nice. It can be comforting, but don’t pray and then be upset at the collectivism (taxes) required to get things up and running. I notice a conflict often with those who pray and the need for government.
Thank you for making this and putting it up this is my hometown and im just now seeing this i been without power for 9 days it took us 2 day to saw out the roads to just get to town Hampton was hit hard to many people have lost everything they have work for. Thanks to all out there working trying to rebuild
One thing I have learned from this video is, flooding in the hills is way different from the flat land. I thought we had it bad when hurricane Floyd flooded us and there was water eight inches from the bottom of the traffic lights. But at least it wasn't a raging rapids through the town. God bless these people.
Heartbreaking devastation . The power of wind and water is infinitely more powerful than we ever imagine. It is also capricious. Yes, the hurricanes and tornadoes come annually but the far reaching effects are sometimes beyond imagination.
I work in this county and the exit you see (40) is the one I used to take to work. The river is the Nolichucky River that flows in from NC via the Nolichucky Gorge. Even in a moderate rain this river is fairly violent and I know many people who will never raft it again. These are some of the best people you'll ever meet and the town is just an average town with no tourism really but with an awesome backdrop. There is an American flag in front of most homes and it is truly a model of what most of America used to be. Please keep the people of Unicoi County in your thoughts and prayers.
I'm thinking the total for all the damage Helene had done is going to be over a zillion dollars. The last death count I saw was 40 but I'm sure that will at least triple. This was a storm of centuries. I've heard that if the Atlantic's water temperature rises a half of a degree more there will be a permanent hurricane 🌀 in it

Scour can become so deep that streambed material is removed from beneath the abutment or pier footings (known as undermining), compromising the integrity and stability of a bridge structure
I don't think people realize just how devastating this is for the years to come! Food production and manufacturing took a massive hit with this hurricane and there's another one on the way! Then, on top of that you have the inflation!

Love Erwin. My Lay religious chapter (a couple of years ago) selected to have meetings in their local library because it was between our cities of Asheville and Bristol. The library folks were so welcoming! They even had a library kitty cat named "Story." It's so heartbreaking. I drove that selection of I-26 countless times and drove thru Erwin to go hike Mount Michel its surreal honestly to see what happened. My prayers are with everyone right now
Good choice on the music. Way to gain engagement for your audience too, getting them to comment which increases your algorithm. Obviously, everyone that comments haven’t done better, but just arm chair experts. Each person that comments negatively on your work I hope donates $500 each to the relief efforts because they believe they want to make the world a better place. How pedestrian a move to make the music depressing when the video already shows a horrific event that those people that live there have to live through. Thank you for doing this video and your choice for accompaniment.
Music doesn't need to be depressing, but it should be solemn and respectful of the people who have lost so much. And if I had $500 to give, I'd give it. Would volunteer my time if I didn't live so far away.
Beautiful video, how beautiful the mountains are, none fighting the other about one being greater or greener……..just co existing…..the way it was planned. Man is out of order so the earth is too……….because of man and his greed.
This has really saddened me. I used to come through this area almost every day when I drove a truck. I loved the beauty of this place. I just can't believe the damage. I hope the people are okay.
From SE Louisiana thoughts and prayers , Erwin TN is one of my favorite places in the world. When I thru hiked the AT in 1999 I spent thanksgiving in Erwin at Uncle Johnnys and I fell in love with the tri city area . This hits me in the gut about as bad as when Katrina destroyed New Orleans. Be safe stay strong and know that you will come back from this better than ever .
Excellent photography! I think I would have chosen different music to underscore the devastation perhaps but the point is made regardless. Any links to bona fide local donation collection centers would be great.. Thanks for showing the carnage in TN!
The storm, the flooding aftermath with dams threatened, roads and buildings destroyed, this is one, unfortunately that will go down in history. A disaster worse than the Johnsonville flood in terms of damage. My heart aches for all those affected.
My heart is breaking as I watch this and the tears just flow. I am in middle Ga and what we have all just experienced is devastating. It's not about the things, houses , jobs but this and the time we live in is about God Almighty !!!! Get to Him quickly, run while there is still time. He loves us so much He sent His only son . Give it all to Him He will see you through. As this is happening to us here please know the middle east is jumping right out of the pages of the Bible speaking very loudly And prophetically. Pay attention. Time is short. Very short. Much much love
Appreciate the drone footage. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 extended to those who lost their life or are struggling. Stay strong and work through the process of recovery. We have been complacent about Mother Nature and hope the rebuilding will take her into consideration. ✌🏻

Instead of music it would be better if you did a voiceover. said where this, city, state, region, how many miles it covers, what river that is, what highways those are, what cities they connect to, and what those buildings house. You must understand people are watching from all over the world. Most local news broadcasters aren’t even saying which state they’re covering only the county so you’re not the only one. I’m in Alabama and I’d like to share this but I need more information. This is devastation on levels never seen in my lifetime. I’m so sorry for everyone’s losses. The video is good I just wish I knew more. I’m so sorry and God bless.
I agree. Would be nice to know what we are looking at besides total devastation. Appears to be an industrial area with several large buildings, but what? Not much info in the description either.
It’s the Unicoi Hospital at Exit 40 on I-26 in TN and the interstate bridges are just north of that hospital that was on news for needing 50+ people rescued from roof. The interstate connects to I-81 north of this and goes south through Asheville.
I was thinking the same thing. You took my words wright out of my mouth. I would love to know what highway that was and what was those buildings that were destroyed and what area was this?
Thank you! It’s hard to recognize places where we have been happy. I pray for all the people there, especially those working in the area at that moment.

Thank you. I was wondering what the yellow piping was.
Thanks for the info! 👍🏻
USA rafting? Isn’t that where the KOA was located? I just stayed at the KOA in Jonesborough. Surely that was affected by this no?
UJ :-(
Thanks for sharing what little landmarks are left… while the city lines remain, the geographical area is forever changed
My heart breaks for the community of Erwin. Sending heartfelt prayers for all in Erwin. ♥️🙏🏼♥️🙏🏼♥️🙏🏼
Thanks so much love from Erwin.....
Never ever thought I would see this scene in East Tennessee. As bad or worse than anything I have ever seen in Florida. Incredible footage and incredibly sad video footage . 😢😢😢
Yeah, same here, I lived 31 years in Palm Beach County and only saw this a couple of times down there.
Any river or stream between mountains can swell as they've done many times since the mountains were formed millions of years ago
I’m over on the NC side….just north of Asheville. I live about a quarter mile from the French Broad and, obviously, we have seen massive flooding and other damage here. So sad to see the Irwin & Unicoi areas so damaged. Prayers for all those affected by this storm!
Thank you to whoever made this video. I never would have known to be praying.
Pray for our people and little
Town.
I've driven though there at least 20 times on my way to or just leaving from family in Asheville. WOW that is horrible! Thank you for sharing.
Our Hearts go out to all those impacted. Thank you to all the emergency services folks.
If people were moved out, better than devastating loss of life. Heard 34 to 43, ? Condolences for their loss
The church still standing next to the river brought chills through my body as I thought of in troubled times turning to the Lord Jesus Christ Son of God for strength, hope, and wisdom. For He will never forsake you. He is merciful. Amen 🙏
A beautiful part of the country. Great photography. Hope the residents recover soon.
Trump.
This breaks my heart ❤! This is one of the most beautiful areas of East Tennessee there is. May God Bless those who have lost everything. 😭😢
God bless the people of Unicoi County and Erwin. We're from Buncombe County in NC and we got hit hard but not that hard. The great people of TN are in our prayers. Pray also for those serving us and trying to get our lives back to normal.
Praying for you guys. May God bless you and find peace through this difficult time.
Praying for the well being of many that have lost homes, jobs, businesses,churchs,hospitals..so sad but so reality.. America is divided on stupid things while our own fellow citizens are suffering devastations all around us..Lord please help your people realize whats important greater than race and politics right now, help us to love, pray, and help one another
Be consistent and give the “Lord” credit for this destruction he has visited upon this community.
Well said.❤
Praying is nice. It can be comforting, but don’t pray and then be upset at the collectivism (taxes) required to get things up and running. I notice a conflict often with those who pray and the need for government.
Prayers for the community of Erwin, the beautiful land and the river 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
You should have prayed before it hit to prevent this, oh wait that had no effect on the outcome
Excellent job of documenting the damage along the river. I'm sure your footage will be of great help in the rescue and reconstruction.
Praying for y'all. What can we do??? Thank you for showing us - our hearts are broken for you!!
Thoughts and prayers with everyone stay strong! Seeing all this devastation is bad but the landscape and mountains around is beautiful.
Please rebuild the hospital out of the flood zone. Praying for all affected by the storm.
Of at least raise it on high enough stilts (whatever that is) to better survive the next major flood.
My little town is crying! And so am I! My grandparents and my parents were born here and 6 siblings! We will prevail Erwin is strong we'll be ok!
Crazy to see that much damage that far inland from a hurricane.
Hope they recover quickly from this.
I'm thinking the total for all the damage Helene had done is going to be over a zillion dollars. The last death count I saw was 40 but I'm sure that will at least triple. This was a storm of centuries. I've heard that if the Atlantic's water temperature rises a half of a degree more there will be a permanent hurricane 🌀 in it
@@JohnD-JohnD thank you it is devastating 🙏🏼🙏🏼

The power of water is always astonishing to me. Praying for all those who felt it’s furry first hand.
Thank you for sharing your time and talent to capture this event. Well done.
This is the town about 20 miles from where we lived in Telford, TN. I-26 is the road with the bridge washed away. I used to drive this road often as you go over to Asheville, NC
Yes I still do! Just had a Dr appt in Asheville a week ago m. Idk what we will do when I go back in December
My husband drives for a food distribution company out of Johnson City. They deliver to Asheville and surrounding towns daily. Not sure what they are going to do now.
Bridge scour is the removal of streambed material caused by swiftly moving water from around bridge abutments or piers. Scour can become so deep that streambed material is removed from beneath the abutment or pier footings (known as undermining), compromising the integrity and stability of a bridge structure
This could be one of the most expensive hurricanes ever. Such loss.
NOLICHUCKY RIVER caused all this!! I was at that river Saturday!! unbelievable destruction!!
Ofcourse it will be... Inflation is real.
@richdiana3663. Without a doubt. Over 350 mi. from Helene, getting 60+ gusts in coastal SE. Fl. Unheard of in my 72 years here!!
@buckydoedowner9040 = 🤡
I don't think people realize just how devastating this is for the years to come! Food production and manufacturing took a massive hit with this hurricane and there's another one on the way!
Then, on top of that you have the inflation!
I’m sorry for everyone affected by this, I wish you well and a speedy recovery. You have your life, everything else is just stuff. Try to remember that Mother Nature has no “favorites”.
Such a beautiful area with the mountains and forests. I hope they get all the help they need to recover from this disaster.
Wow…just unbelievable. I never thought about a hurricane damaging Tennessee. Many Prayers being sent up for you all. Love & Hugs from Oregon 😢🌿💚🌿
Ol Mother Nature can shake us off like a bunch of fleas at any given moment. Prayers for you all. 😢
This was a Geo- Engineered Storm , No Mother and No Nature involved !

God seems to be behind Mother Nature. Not us. There’s many reasons why
Your prayers are irrelevant and do absolutely nothing to repair even one blade of grass of damage. 😀
She certainly has a way to do a reset. This would be called wiping the slate clean.
Love Erwin. My Lay religious chapter (a couple of years ago) selected to have meetings in their local library because it was between our cities of Asheville and Bristol. The library folks were so welcoming! They even had a library kitty cat named "Story." It's so heartbreaking. Asheville got hit hard, my son and his wife and children, their town of Damascus, VA, got hit hard. So sad. Prayers for all. --- Also, I like the music it helps gather the courage to view this sad devastation. 😔🙏
I like the music, too. I hope your son and others in his region are okay.
@b_michigan7783 Yes, thank you, we are all safe. However, I have tried reaching my friend from my chapter who lives in Asheville, but they have no way of communicating - cell service and the internet are down. I'm praying she and all are okay.
@b_michigan7783 friend in Asheville just contacted me. She is safe and still in her home!
The power of of water and nature. Nature should always be respected
Thank you for sharing, we have people that need our help, sending prayers from Illinois.
I lived in JC for slightly over 2 years working at Eastman on the large project they built. Its heart breaking to see damage to this area.
@@DriftlessWarrior Thank you for your service.
Wow!! 😨
Looks like that stretch of I-26 is going to be out of commission for awhile. It's just unbelievable how fast this all happened.

Scour can become so deep that streambed material is removed from beneath the abutment or pier footings (known as undermining), compromising the integrity and stability of a bridge structure
@@TheNashEquilHere's some information about 100-year flood maps and the likelihood of flooding in a 100-year flood zone:
What is a 100-year flood?
A 100-year flood, also known as a 1% flood, is a flood that has a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. The term "100-year flood" is an estimate of the long-term average recurrence interval, and it doesn't mean that a flood of this magnitude will occur once every 100 years.
Flood zones
Flood zones are labeled on flood maps to indicate their risk level. The labels are:
Low risk: B & X
Moderate risk: C & X
High risk: A
Coastal high risk: V, VE
Undetermined risk: D
Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs)
These are flood zones with the highest risk of flooding. A 100-year flood has a 26% chance of occurring in a 30-year mortgage.
100-year floods compared to 10-year floods
A 100-year flood is less frequent but deeper and more destructive than a 10-year flood

You can lead a stubborn stupid mule to water, but you can not make it drink.
Hurricanes like this that hit Florida initially have been steadily increasing in both frequency and intensity for several decades now due to CC. If you choose to ignore scientific reality because it does not agree with your willfully ignorant political takes, well that is on you. These type of events are not going away in the future because some ignorant fools think they can wish or pray them away. They are just going to keep happening with greater frequency and intensity going forward until people actually choose to face reality and take action that is more than useless self aggrandizing “thoughts and prayers” BS! 😀😀😀

My thoughts with the people of Erwin and surrounding locations. The wonderful trail community for thru-hikers passing on the AT. It is so sad to see this.
This is eastern Tennessee. Interstate 26 near Interstate 81.
There has been devastation equal to this all over the u.s. and world this year
