I've lived my entire life in WNC. I think we are all still in a state of shock this happened. My dad also survived, but will always be traumatized with what he saw. Including his friends house floating down the river, and a herd of cattle floating down the river as well. He found out later it was 75 cattle in total a farmer lost. I hope we never see flooding like this ever again.

In the flood of 77 the water came up over the hood of my dad's 2 cars. I drained the oil, coolant, transmission and rear end, and replaced it with new. We washed the outside and cleaned the inside and he used them for another 10yrs.

I heard the water coming off the mountains BEFORE Helene hit, saturating the mountains, starting the flooding as Helene hit, was more water than what goes over Niagara Falls in a day. It’s no wonder so much has been wiped out and so many lives lost and so many lives forever impacted by this “unusual” storm. We need to see this. The geography has been totally and forever changed. What has impressed me is how supported folks have been toward each other in your area. I wish it was the same here.

Yeah, we live on a creek just a bit smaller than that one in central TN. It was hit with the "1000 year flood" in 2010, and so much trash ended up around the creek and on our property. I still find plastic trash in the woods. It's not nearly as much a concern as human life, but it's worth the work to reduce the plastic an other potentially toxic stuff in and around the river. It's *so much easier* to do in the months following the flood, than years later.

Aloha from Hawaii. Im retired out here now for 6 yrs. I grew up in Shelby. My moms side was born there. My grandmother is buried in Cherokee. I rock climbed and camped all around up there by BatCave, Chimney Rock and Montreat. I took my 3 lil kids at the time back to Shelby about 32 yrs ago. I took them up to Chimney Rock and bought them fudge and pepper jam and stuff. After HS i joined the USN. Got married 40 yrs ago and moved to Colorado. I am glad i took my kids back there. My mom and her side have all passed. I still love and miss NC. I was the first one to repell down Malcolm E Brown Auditorium at Shelby HS back in 1977 lol. Be safe youall and God bless!

9:53 that's why they did this for the mines. The government is realizing up north in the south like us in Florida you're landlocked in some really rural areas. We're so tired of rebuilding in Florida. I have prayed since 07 and contacted VA , TN, and ga emergency Management to see if plans were in place for something like we have in Florida. As of this year you're now seeing the answer I got which was no. Y'all have to stick together in these kinds of times. Govt is just going hard as ever at we the people who mostly work mind our own business and try to live simple lives. But they want us dependant on them. It's a terrible way to live every storm season. I wish y'all the best this just breaks my heart for y'all especially because I truly believe this one and Milton were man made. Once the tech companies realized what was in those mines you guys became a 🎯. 😢 God bless y'all

Looks like the search and rescue people needed to express their heart and put the teddy bear up where he could dry off and if someone came looking for it, that would be a wonderful moment and the rocking chair as if someone could still come and enjoy a sunrise and watch the calm water once again. Very symbolic of moving on. 🥰🥰 God be with you...

People keep saying things can be replaced but be sure that we do know how devastating it can be to lose everything. Those that died have moved on to a place of no pain. Those that survive are truly traumatized and are left to pick up the pieces of lives that are forever changed.

So sorry. Water can change the landscape. It is going to be like this now. Next year new grass will grow, new green foliage, a few more years and it will get greener and cover some of it up. We are experiencing a very mini version of this in Central New Mexico with the wildfire and the flashfloods in the burn scar areas. Water washes away the dirt and leaves rocks and boulders. It doesn't go back to what it was, it will stay looking this way. A forest can still be beautiful after a wildfire and flood, I've learned that.

We are hearing the count for the missing is 1,000. My daughter lived in NC and I’ve stayed with her and drove numerous times right through Asheville going to and from Texas. I always drove that route as it’s safe and beautiful. I’ve been in Texas when we’ve had floods and they will rip your clothing right off your body. Dumpster going where roads were. We always had a back up plan where to go if it rains and floods. I’ve lived on the river most of my life and even now. When I hear oh it hasn’t flooded here. I tell them that means nothing. I know to head for high ground. I did pray for everyone and I know it takes a long time after this devastating flood to become normal or semi normal.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this honest video with us! You have shown the devastation up close without any frills. My heart hurts with y’all. My Grandparents lost their historic home to a flood here in NE Georgia on the Tallulah River in the late 1960’s. We still have some flooding every year, but not that bad. Georgia Power Co. controls our lakes, dams, and rivers, so we common folks have no clue what will happen. So happy that you Dad is okay. You are a good Son! May God bless you all! ✝️

I don’t know a way to describe the feeling when I see piece of furniture sitting by itself perfectly upright, waiting for someone to have a sit down and observe the surroundings. Being an observer of unreal reality, so calm asking yourself did we just experience devastation.
Is the mind playing with us.
    Some might label it disassociating.
Thanks for the video. You are correct the power of water a destroyer and giver of life.

Dude you said a mouthful when you referenced the power of water. Thinking about all you folks up there.
Here in upstate SC we had a lot of wind damage but very little flooding. Be safe up there. 👊👊

I can’t even begin to speak about what I’m seeing. My heart going out to y’all. We have had some serious flooding in areas. But how it went and took everything in its path with a force I have no comprehension of. I see so much debris. On one of our rivers here that flooded the trees had a big white bucket and black sheeting hanging 10 feet above the road way. from the branches. Took a while to figure out what the black stuff was. Sheeting they put under houses to protect from moisture. A bridge washed out. Flooded farms.
But yours has like you said a canyon and truck loads of debris. Plus all the other tragic loss of life.

My thoughts and prayers are with y’all through this traumatic time. My parents live in East Tennessee, over in Newport. I will forever have PTSD from waking up & seeing my mother using the 🆘 text to the emergency services. As they had lost power, cellular service, water, & home phone service; she was worried that my father would run out of oxygen due to the generator running out of gas. Dad is on oxygen after having a bad case of COVID & developing pulmonary embolism (clots in his lungs). Thankfully they both were doing well until this past week, when my mother became unresponsive yesterday, October 23rd, when she was taken to the hospital & then was life flighted to UT in Knoxville. She is slowly starting to follow commands while intubated on the ventilator. Right now we are unsure what caused this as well as her sleeping all weekend long. 😢 Stress, COVID both have a weird effect on the body & brain. Warm hugs to all. 🫶🏻🙏🏼🫶🏻
