They are doing the dance called the Texas Tommy. That band in the background was possibly Sid LeProtti's band from the Barbary Coast. This dance had open sections that look like what we call square dancing. The closed sections of the dance were often danced with great verve and had acrobatic elements thrown in. The Texas Tommy paved the way for the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug.
Lindy Hop came from Jackson FL. Swing Came from New Orleans. Jitterbug is a derivative. It ended up in our community because it thats where it came from. Along with Hambone. Country & Rock.

What makes this film so important also ; if you do the math, we are watching people born around 1889-representing the FIRST Generation of African Americans born immediately after slavery. Even back then, black people still had the moves! When I was growing up in the 5o's and 60's I always looked to see how the black people danced and tried to imitate them, because they were always the ones with the best moves on the dance floor.
The moon walk goes back to a black tap dancer, Bill Bailey, in 1955. It's posted on TH-cam, something like "Bill Bailey, 1955". He does the moonwalk in that video, though in those days it was called the "Back-Slide".
Tom Jones - I wonder whether any of the sidemen in LeProtti's bands played with any bands that DID record on the West Coast in the 1920's, maybe for Sonny Clay or tbe Spikes Brothers.

Fun fact: I was doing research for a history paper on the Jazz Age and I was looking through old New York Times articles from that period. Apparently some people were so scandalized by jazz dancing that they got it banned, and there was one article quoting a woman complaining that because of the ban, kids were leaving farms to go into the city to look for dance halls (I imagine it was easier to enforce the ban in rural areas than crowded urban), and that white young men and women had begun frequenting black dance halls because of their "known dancing ability".

One of the most memorable compliments I every received was from two sincere African American men I didn't know taking the time to compliment me concerning my dancing style and interpretation of the music being performed.
I look at this and think about my great grandmother my granny would have been 5 or 6 around this time she would tell me stories about her mother putting her to bed before they went out to barnyard dances
Wow you’re completely right. People were definitely more active in this time, with hardly anything else to entertain themselves but dancing they had to do it pretty often on top of the labor they already did at work. And I believe this is still a time they walked most everywhere. I’d say they probably didn’t indulge as much either due to finances. It’s amazing to see how small changes in society can make such a difference like that
