My point of contention, was that if Stearns values a particular player as a difference maker, then going the extra mile within reason may be necessary to get said player. Your right, the correct approach to analyze the Mets overall situation is to detach. I was speaking from a fan's perspective and thats where the emotion came in

I dont see where the Mets can add another FA. The roster is set. The Mets want to rely on prospects. And the only spot for a rookie is to move Vientos to 1st base and have Baty and Acuna play 3rd. And maybe Mauricio if his knee is healed.
Every situation is different. Soto didnt win either with Judge, torres, volpe, and stanton. He did win a world series with Brian Dozier, yan gomes, and matt adams. Soto has proven to be a winner and difference maker, not too mention an extremely good post season player

Cohen flexed and threw Pete and Boras under the bus. If he doesn't cost a lot then it seems like maybe he could help DH if he pans out, we still don't have a real DH (Winker/Marte platoon I guess). If he costs anything that's valuable then hard pass. His defense is terrible every year so I don't really see him as an option to play the IF as his negative DWAR kills his positive OWAR. Stats wise he has a positive OPS+ v LPH over his career and Winker has a much better OPS+ v RPH so my guess is the interest in Torkelson is a v LPH DH platoon with Winker. Just looking at his stats if I was going to try to use him for something that would be it.

To me the gamble is silly unless the Mets are trying to save payroll. Torkelson is the embodiment of a Pete decline. He strikes out 170 times when healthy and cannot hit .240. This is what the Mets are afraid of regarding Pete. So youre getting a worse version of Pete for a fraction of the price.
Your right in that Torkelson would be a value option. If stearns see's great value, that may be enough to entice him to make a move. In the last year, Stearns has taken a flier on many players who appeared to be washed up or even out of baseball. A 25 year old guy who hit 31 homers a year ago. The mets can probably get him for 2 low level prospects, so the price will not be a deterrent. I can definetly see your side of the equation as well

Torkelson is not good. He needs a lot of work. Mets need to do better. If you’re aspiring to win a championship, you don’t experiment. Want a young bat, go for Casas. “Moderate risk” is not a near guarantee.
