Congratulations, that’s awesome. That’s the same model I have and my only regret is that I didn’t buy it sooner. I haven’t figured out how to install the auto lube kit yet either but I haven’t missed it.
As a retired Alaska logger I think this video is one of my favorites. I never worked in a sawmill really, only in the woods as a riggingman and a couple years as a timberfaller. The most dangerous jobs in the United states by far. The second most, construction, is a about half as dangerous. I started as a teenager and transferred to a short line logging railroad at 42, as you get to where you just can't do it anymore. A young man's game for sure. So this comment is about safety. It's not really about priority, it's about ATTITUDE. I was big on it as during my logging career I witnessed many injuries. From daily first blood, (owies) to horrific ones. That made the rest of the crew first responders. And professional help was hours away by medevac. I made sure I always had an updated first aid, CPR card. They expire after 3 or 4 years but that wasn't enough. So I took it seriously and took the class every chance I got. Once or twice a year. Some classes are way better than others. I always encouraged my crew to do the same. Heck, I encourage everyone to. Situational awareness is vital. So if l may, suggest you make a mention of your 1st aid kits, contents and why you chose them. My personal kits are what I put together myself based on my experiences and the situation. Lots of gauze, medical tape, Kwick Clot, etc, even a cotex in my tin hat when I was a logger (I think you can figure out why) Thanks for reading this and, stay safe!
I have a tip for You, Screw the leveling pads to your 6+6, The rails will need to be check ever so often and keep all your blades, when they get dull, in time you will want to sharpen them. (put then in used oil) You will have lots of fun and it will be hard work, but enjoyable work. I have had a mill for 14 years. I will say no more, Been keeping a eye on you two for years.

Well, one thing to be thankful for is that VERY few who get stuck on the freeway to a standstill have that kind of stunning scenery to keep them company! : - D
Now to build a shed for the mill, to keep the elements off of it. And a shed for drying the lumber. Projects seem to beget more projects, but it’s all enjoyable building stuff for yourself!

My brother in law bought a sawmill to cut the lumber to build their house. Now he is so busy cutting lumber to fill orders that he has to work on the house at night. Next thing you need to get is a pevey to roll the big logs that are too heavy to pick up. Great video brother
Nothing brings me more joy then getting a notification that you guys posted a new video!! I wish you would every day!! 😂 haha. Cant wait to see all the new projects!!
Make some money off the sawmill so you have funds for those things you can't build. What's the endgoal for the cabin? Since it is rough land, have you thought about building a walkway bridge over the boggy part for wildlife viewing, strolls? You guys are awesome, so interesting watching your videos everytime.
I am a grandma in the middle of Minnesota and I just watched a sawmill being put together. Isn't the internet wonderful? You guys did great. Even after 36 years of marriage, my husband and I would have been on opposite ends of the property within an hour!
That is awesome guys! You rock! Talk about a hot knife thru butter! That thing cuts so easily - wow! The engine is louder than the cutting. Wanna take any bets as till how long before a neighbor asks for a favor of cutting? After your big projects, I bet it'll make for a nice little side business. Very nice job of expanding the land! Looks like it'll be time to build a couple of new sheds for the boat & mill to keep them out of the weather. Maybe big enough for both truck & boat... Don't you need treated lumber under the mill to prevent rot & termites? It looks like there is a chute that exhausts the sawdust. It would be great to put a bag on that to capture the sawdust for the chicken coop, high tunnel, etc. Safety time: Sorry, it's a former Navy guy safety thing... Eric, @ about 5:00 in... you were in totally the wrong place standing next to that dump truck with the bed up!!! Notice how it swayed? If those bolts, or hydraulic cylinder breaks, it can cause the whole bed & truck to flip on its side, crushing anyone standing next to it! Item #2: when milling, you should have a large fire extinguisher and your hose nearby in case of sparking, fire...
honestly I started watching this channel because I'm interested in homestead but they have become my role models in how couples should be. They are so supportive of each other and seem so in love all the time. I'm sure there are conflicts we don't see off camera but man, I hope my future wife and I can get along this well!
I have a feeling this will pay for itself 10 fold with the cost of lumber right now. What a great investment. Plus being able to use your own beetle kill wood is excellent for the environment.
Why not? There are so many useable dead trees available. Getting a mill makes total sense. You two have made such good practical decisions with your generator, your 6x6, your snowmobiles, your boat, your high tunnel green house, and so on. The days are so short in the wanter you have more time to think, talk, research and plan. You have such long days in the summer, you can just get it done. It is a nice natural rhythm. Getting stuff done makes the fishing and hunting trips more satisfying. The fishing trips make getting things done more satisfying. Thanks for sharing your thought processes with us. It is really helpful.... Also, you can save money and use the sawdust in the chicken coop and then compost it and put it in the garden. Win. Win. Win. The bark can be laid down in walk ways. Anything else can be burned to keep the house warm. There are no negatives.
OMG - You two give me a smile that lasts the entire video. Watching the 'kids' - I'm old so these two are kids - excited and enthusiasm at times is a Christmas Morning joy to behold. Smart move on the mill and I'm sure you'll make great use of it. Way cool, stay safe.
With all the machinery, heavy equipment, electronics, etc you incorporate in your life your channel should be called sophisticated living Alaska. Nothing simple about it when it comes to skills. And I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.
So happy for you guys. I hope it gives you years of trouble free service. Maybe keep a list of the dimensional lumber you cut to tally up what it would have cost you at your big box store to see how long the payback period is? :) Cheers from Nova Scotia
Great new toy, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with it. As you cut different sized logs, be sure to continue to check the level. I've seen a few folks who have saws like yours that didn't recheck the levels and later found they didn't have as many straight cuts as they thought.
Summers in Alaska are beyond description. We moved from Montana to Anchorage in July of 1982. We got to the home we were staying at and being 13 I was bored. I told my mom I was going to go check out the neighborhood. She told me to be home by dark. You Alaskans will understand the humor in that...
So exciting to see this, can't wait to see some more action with the sawmill and watch you put up new buildings! Also, I think these's going to be a lot of bark and sawdust from all this milling, and that can be a great resource in the garden to pave the paths with so you don't get all muddy when it's a bit wet outside.
Friend of mine had one and used to build his homestead, congratulations! He made a 3 sided shed with one side open to let logs in. A canvas ex military drop cloth closed the exposed side for the winter. Just an idea that worked for someone else. Have fun!
That sawmill will indeed pay for itself in no time! And I'm glad you mentioned the chain saw mill, because I was sure the woodshed was made from lumber you milled yourself! I was getting deja vu! LOL I think a forklift is next on the menu! Can't wait to see the projects! :)
I put some type of protective coating like a clear vinyl code or something like a sheet of it I'm not exactly sure what word to use right now but I put that over my chart so that the weather does not wear away the measurements
I think the coolest thing about you two is the way your both all in together. Not very many people will actually go all in like you do, a couple that does is pretty rare.
OMGoodness, all those boxes to open and all those pieces to put together. You two make a great team and I so enjoy your videos. Just please be safe with that sawmill.
Two of the Best TH-cam channels. All of you are just amazing Humans. Thank you both Eric and Arielle and Shawn James for sharing your life with the world.
This video was perfect timing, my husband and I were just discussing the chainsaw sawmill vs a mill like this and which one we could get away with. I think this made my decision pretty clear with how much time can be saved. Thank you!
It's fun to watch you guys progress. I moved to Oregon in 1987, and 'almost' moved to Alaska. I'm watching you guys, dreaming of the fork in life I 'should' have taken.
So excited to wake up to the notification this morning in the UK. LOVE IT! That booklet gave me the chills, you guys did so well. You work so hard and are literally winning! Already looking forward to the next one! ❤💯👌
A sawmill, Omgosh!!! My first thought was a huge log splitter, but this is so much better. Awesome 👍. Can't hardly wait to see all the things you build.
Nothing beats being in on every bit of new development, every new excitement. Well, nothing except being there and lending a hand. But I'll have to cross the Pacific for that 😁. Can't wait to see ALL the projects made possible by having that sawmill. Keep safe, both of you.
Seeing you guys make it feels so heartwarming! Each day your homestead grows and gets better and it's only thanks to your hardwork and love for knowledge. Very inspiring!!
We have a woodland sawmill and would be glad to help you any way we can. We were actually across the highway from you today cutting logs at James’ place.
Sharing your life experiences, your challenges, and your successes, brings joy to many people. Myself included. I wish you all the best and plan to keep watching :)
I see a huge shop in your future and an overhead trolley and lift system- cover so you can handle the super big logs, eventually adding another section of length to the saw mill for super big and long beams!!! thumbs up all the way you two!!! Can't wait for what's next... Your own Sea Plane?! That would be super cool.
I put mine on 12 inch stumps, it was easier to just level them out then to bolt down and build up I made them 18 inches tall. This made saw dust removal easier and kept the unit elevated and dry (no corrosion)
At least all the parts were there. Amazing Now you have your own sawmill. So Proud of you both. Ariel and Eric your Property looks Amazing, and you both look so Healthy and Happy. Can't wait till your Winter. Hug's And kindest thoughts from Victoria Australia.
I knew it had to either be an extended solar system, or a sawmill. That is going to be so cost-effective for you guys, the price of lumber is ridiculous. The 4x6 that you made here in Mobile is $47.67. it certainly won't take long. Great going, can't wait to see it in use more.
Do yourself a huge favor and get yourself a couple Steel Cant Hooks for turning logs. Your whole body will thanks you!! This purchase is probably the best one you have made for your situation. Congrats and thanks for sharing!!
This video was in my top five favorites of your channel. I am from the Midwest so I love watching your Alaskan adventures. What an awesome tool to have!! So excited to see all the benefits of building it will bring you guys!! Thank you so much for sharing and keep up the hard work!!
2:18 - Norwood written on the box! I was so hoping that's what y'all were gonna say! Whoop! Could y'all extend the wood shed to create a covering for the mill? That way, if you should want to, y'all could continue to mill wood during winter and stockpile for the next season. Barn doors for the large opening that would be required as well? Either way congratulations! This is a well deserved and needed tool. I can't wait to see what all y'all do with it!
Great job helping each other. When I lived in the woods in Kentucky, I cut my own firewood. Property had been logged before I bought it, so first year I cut some of the leavings. Then I found out a sawmill sold slabs. I had a load delivered and built a sawbucks to use. I doubled the Xs for the frame so a chain saw blade would fit in between. When I loaded it with slabs and cut between the Xs, each armful stayed on the sawbucks. Saved lots of bending and picking each piece up. All I had to do was put my arm under each cut and load it into woodshed, which I built out of slab wood.
I really admire you guys for taking a manual and putting that mill to work for you. There doesn't seem to be anything you all can't do. I really look forward to seeing all the projects you have planned and hope all goes well for you. Take care and stay safe!
You two are amazing … I had every confidence you would get that new saw mill up and going quickly … well done ! So happy that you were able to purchase this a valuable, much needed piece of equipment … I know it will get well used on future projects … have a great week … 🙏☘️😘
I felt giddy with excitement for you two getting a big shipment at long last. Congratulations on your new mill. 4:58 Eric, please stand well clear of the tip-over range of any gravel truck. With that fence at your back you might not have had room to flee.
I always though you needed a sawmill, now you have one. Of course this leads to a tractor with a grapple. Then a shed for the sawmill, so you can run it in winter. Arial is quite strong being able to lift half a log.
If you’re concerned about the snow, you could build a cover for your new sawmill.😎👍🏽 it’s awesome to see all your new projects & how excited y’all get!🤠🎉👍🏽
Wow, this is an amazing development... the increase in raw creative power is huge. I've only been watching your channel for a month or two, but this is one of my favorite videos. I'm fascinated by the idea of maximizing potential with minimal expenditures, and that makes this video interesting. Have you guys ever seen Alone in the Wilderness with Dick Proenneke? It's a guy who built his own Alaskan cabin by hand, in 1967 (and filmed it himself). Anybody who likes this channel will enjoy his work also. Anyways, this video really nails the essence of what I love about the idea of living in Alaska. Man conquering nature by exercising a rational strategy. A hint of Robinson Crusoe.
PS: Red tool house here on TH-cam has the same brand of saw, and he does some really great tutorials on homemade jigs, accessories, and other tips for your mill.
Good point I overlooked that. Watch him as he helped the Hollar Homestead and didn’t pay attention to what brand. He has lots of tips. Liked his outdoor lighting tips too.
Another awesome video of enthusiastic co-operation and determination. The new sawmill certainly beats the effort and time that the chainsaw took. A great investment !
Was happy to see this pop-up at one in the morning central time. I'm always interested in what you are doing and can't wait to see what you are building with all the wood you are going to mill.
You guys are awesome. I’ve watched your chicken coop and wood shed construction videos multiple times. I can’t wait to see what construction projects you have lined up.
You are going to LOVE the LM29 - we bought ours about 6 years ago here in AL and it paid for itself very quickly. It’s all a learning experience but you’re going to love milling your own wood, congrats you all. Be safe and can’t wait to see more of it. The two of us put ours together in about 2 weeks, those books they came with are handy.
I made sure my now husband and I could successfully assemble projects together before I considered him permanent. 24 years later we still tackle projects with ease.
Congratulations, that’s awesome. That’s the same model I have and my only regret is that I didn’t buy it sooner. I haven’t figured out how to install the auto lube kit yet either but I haven’t missed it.
Good morning Shawn.

Good morning from central PA Shawn ... take care.

My thoughts exactly. They can mill 1/2 inch thick, wide boards for roofing shingles.
For winter it might be advisable to instal a poly tunnel around it.

Great addition to your homestead Eric and Arielle
That woman can work!!! I did not hear one curse word! I really enjoy all your videos, especially the scenery.
Seeing you guys make it feels so heartwarming! Each day your homestead grows and gets better and it's only thanks to your hardwork and love for knowledge. Very inspiring!!
I love this video. Very much like an Andrew Camareta video. Covers weeks or even months of work and filming. You guys are my heroes!
We have a woodland sawmill and would be glad to help you any way we can.
We were actually across the highway from you today cutting logs at James’ place.
Sharing your life experiences, your challenges, and your successes, brings joy to many people. Myself included. I wish you all the best and plan to keep watching :)
The sawmill will be a game changer! Congrats!
Your next purchase should be a sharpener for your blades. Those blades can be expensive. Great job at setting it up.
Cheaper to just take it in and have it sharpened every now and then
@@Mike-bs5pi I betcha they got some good blade sharpeners up in Alaska : )
Yeah my buddies dad runs a farm, hes the saw mill blade guy lmao
WooHoo! Congratulations on your newest “farmhand” to help you with the work. It looks like a beaut! 👍❤️
They probably already know that they could sell tons of their lumber locally. I wonder if Aspen is good for lumber.
You guys never stop buying all the SMART EQUIPMENT!!! Best new toy ever!! Gonna build ya a D cabin????? Yes, maam!!!
...that mill should get 'er done, good luck, stay safe and have a good weekend...
The mill is a great addition to the homestead. Congrats..That will make life fun and exciting.
G'day from tasmania I've been thinking of buying one of these mills, you guys just sold it to me thanks heaps,
Nice! Could you put a bag on the saw dust outtake to catch it all? Use it in the compost heap, or chicken run, or whatever?
The new sawmill
certainly beats the effort and time that the chainsaw took.
The two of us put ours together in about 2 weeks, those books they came with are handy.
so happy you could get your own saw mill. It will save you so much money and give you what you need to build with.
I made sure my now husband and I could successfully assemble projects together before I considered him permanent. 24 years later we still tackle projects with ease.
Never thought about how much work can be done in a day when living in Alaska in the summer with all that day light. Get ur done!
