    First let me say I'm a huge fan of the show....I'm a Southern California guy. I've always been impressed by how well the DMAX performs, and if I didn't see it for myself I'd have a hard time believing it..Here in Southern Cal we mostly do desert type of off roading and I'm sure that's why I enjoy seeing a different type of off roading. Thanks to all the team that puts together the episodes!

    • @thethepete731
      @thethepete731 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not Graham, but my thoughts on a front locker with IFS are that unless you're spending big money on high end CV axles, it's too hard on parts. A quality LSD at most in the front is about all I would do for the average IFS rig. With a locker you're apt to start blowing axles apart as soon as you get bound up a bit. Better to just pull cable if you have to.

    • @jimmybombaya9571
      @jimmybombaya9571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@thethepete731 I disagree totally, and as Graham said, the rear locker is amazing when its on, I had a Rear locker only, on my 150 prado, then I added a Front locker...if the rear is amazing wait till see where u can go with the front!! twin locked, start on a uphill sand dune and crawl up...

    • @thethepete731
      @thethepete731 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jimmybombaya9571 um what? That has little to nothing to do with what I said. A locked, ifs front end will start breaking CVs if you're pushing it, and I would be shocked if that's not a major reason that Graham isn't running one. GM put a locker in the front of the zr2 Colorado, but I would bet it has strategies to help it keep from breaking parts.

    I won't lie. The D-Max is one of my favourites for all the reasons you mentioned. I love seeing how far you can get with such a basic rig. Did you happen to weigh it before and after to see what the bare tray and canopy added for weight vs the stock bed and topper?
    Also, I think it's worth mentioning the maintenance costs associated with pushing it so hard. As an automotive technician and wheeler, I cannot fathom that you are wheeling that hard with an IFS vehicle (or any vehicle, for that matter), and not replacing front end components like they're a bowl of free candy at a children's party. As much as you "can" do it, doesn't mean it doesn't come with a cost.

    No idea what works best over in Aussieland for the deeper tricks, but here in 'Murica, I'd put that truck on a diet. I love the shows and I am constantly blown away with how much weight you guys carry on those mid size trucks. I understand you have to carry a lot of parts/gear, etc, but there's a couple hundred pounds of factory excess on just about every vehicle out there.
    Pull the carpet and under padding and use Rhino/Raptor liner for easy hose-outs and less waterlogging...remove unused brackets, half harnesses etc. Use more Aluminium/less steel wherever you can and chro-moly replacements where you can't.
    Lots of places to cut weight without completely race prepping the truck, but it's a lot of work.

    Man I love this truck!
    I’m in the USA and I’m running a 2018 Toyota Tacoma for small camping trips / weekend drives.
    I’ve stuffed 33” (255/85r16) maxxis Bighorn MTs under her. As well as a nice by small hybrid bumper on it with a 10k winch hidden behind it.
    Other than that I’m stock, OEM suspension (tuned by fox and about 1” higher than stock). I’ve got a factory rear locker mated to a 6 speed manual (somewhat rare in the states).
    Only thing I’d change on your truck is the tire size but not much. I think the 265/75r16 is about the perfect tire for a little truck. Give you about 1” more than where your at now.

    Great setup! I love the new canopy. The D-Max is almost as legendary as Shorty. As far as locations, more beach trips!!! Those are my absolute favorite.

    Since the canopy was damadged due to poor visibility, try installing a 360 degree video system. 4 camera one has 1 camera in front, one in the back, and 2 more installed in the side mirrors, all hooked up to a controler that combines the video feeds in to a birds eye view. The system is usefull in the city to park a big UT in a tight spot or offroad to see all around, they cost around 400 dollars.There is also a 6 camera system that might be better for offroading, the side cameras are installed in the front and back bumper to have a better view on the corners. It is a relativly cheap and easy upgrade that helps out a lot.

    Mods that I recon for the mighty D-max.Solid axele swap at the front and a front locker

  • @hktcss
    @hktcss 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Aye Graham, nice rig, I think you should add a couple mods that's still on the budget build everyday car.
    1. Front elocker
    2. Rear winch
    3. Staino snorkel colour matched
    4. Upgrade turbo and +15 injects and tune, nothing to crazy but just a bit more pep.
    I also would like to see you guys do a "touring" trip.
    Start from the Otways here in Victoria and make your way all the way back to glass house mountains qld.
    So you go from otways to the high country then to the blue mountains nsw, following the great diving range the whole way in land as much as possible off-road going through till you reach glass house mountains.
    I know a big trip but I'm sure you guys could make a whole series out this taking 8 weeks to do the trip. Having Shaun in his dirty thirty and rocket in the 79 and a few other vehicles both heavily moded like Shaunos thirty to mild like your dmax. Have at least 6 or more vehicles and some towing off-road campers like the metalian or a patriot x1 or a Terra trek.
    Let me know what you think mate? Be nice to see some big trips that are family friendly, have the dog and Mrs and two kids etc.
    Keep up the great work guys cheers 🍻

    I like the mods that you have recently done and I like that is relatively stock showing people what can be done, settle into the mods you’ve just completed and enjoy it.

    Next mods I'd like to see on the dmax:
    How would the Ute tackle tough tracks with front locker;
    How would the Ute sits with rear coil overs for more flex, but with the extra weight of the new canopy now I dunno if that would be too hard to mod.
    Anyway, awasome channel, great context, keep posting!
    Cheers!

    The dmax looks nice power upgrade like Ecu remaped and a exhurst other then that I would leave it the way it sits.
    You have shown that you don't t need big lift big tyres to tackle the hard tracks. Good jobs boys

    Noice, couple of great ideas there, including that ladder, I've nearly come a gutser a couple if times, standing on the tyre or edge of the tray with muddy boots. Always good to see a relatively standard ute out there doing the tough stuff and coming back for more.

    Great overall test/review guys. Well done! A tow test, of say a couple of tons, would be a great addition to the video. Just want that extra towing confidence before buying.

    We’re just about to take ownership of a MQ Triton with a bit of ARB fruit including canopy and drawer system. Can’t wait to get it it out and about.
    Maybe a ‘premo’ canopy like yours one day.

    Nice to see a basic 2" lift and 31's on an IFS ute can easily keep up with the big dogs. Just got 31's on my Hilux, I guess now its time for a winch bar and a lift, then i'll be able to go anywhere.

    Stainless snorkel and custom airbox and a 3inch exhaust for abit more power. rear winch and reverse light. And reverse cameras are handy when you have a canopy
