Karen was a once-in-a-lifetime talent. She had the voice of an angel. Effortless, pure, beautiful, and so very melancholic. She sadly passed away 40 years ago from complications of an eating disorder, which at the time, was virtually unknown to the general public. Her death from anorexia was one of the reasons that the public ever even heard of the disorder.

One take. No auto-tune. Just pure talent and professionalism.

Karen was one of the greatest voices of her generation. From the late 60s thru the 70s and on.
Her brother Richard Carpenter played piano/keyboards and produced the songs. So many hits.
We lost Karen way to soon.

The VOICE that will always pass your heart to your soul. Karen Carpenter the most admired and influential singer I have ever read about and heard. If you go down the Carpenter rabbit hole it will change your whole view on what singing is about. They had in the 70's 14 #1 adult contemporary songs in their first 5 years which is unbelievable. Rated best female drummer in the music industry ever. Forgot to add sold over 150 million and counting.

@@mikebowman8680 My opinion about their music has changed like from night to day. I am a rocker from the 70's. They (Karen Carpenter) is a once in creation. Watch all their live video's and her incredible drumming. Neal Pert was quoted as saying you would have had to ask Karen when asked who is the greatest drummer. Buddy Rich also said she was his favorite drummer. WOW.

@Kevin Boney that was some high praise indeed. If they had only left her behind the drums she might still be with us. What a loss.

Karen's voice was one in a million for sure. Her brother, Richard, played piano and did all the arrangements for their songs. He also sang on the backing vocals. So clean and beautifully performed music. 👍. Nice reaction.

The Carpenters have so many fantastic songs. Other big hits include "Rainy Days and Mondays," "We've Only Just Begun," "Close to You," "Goodbye to Love," and "Top of the World." But there are so many gems even deep in their catalog. I love "Road Ode," for example.

  • @jazzmaan707

Karen, the voice of an angel, as many describe her voice. She was also called "one take Karen," because in the studio, she usually did just one recording take, and it was perfect.

The more i listen to their music the more and more i appreciate the genius of Richard Carpenter. He was a genius at picking and writing songs for his sister.
I this song is a remake of a remake of a remake. But nobody can top this with Karen singing. Simply the best ever.
    THE VOICE!

Richard got stuck in an oldies/AC funk and that's why they bombed in the late 70s and 80s. He didn't evolve their music at all.

Really nice reaction. Thanks so much for not PAUSING. Lucky to have grown up with this dynamic duo. Both so talented. Karen was a top flight drummer also, but her voice still gives me chills and a tear in my eye. Such a beautiful woman with such a beautiful voice lost unnecessarily at such a young age. RIP KAREN!

Nice reaction, welcome to the Carpenters rabbit hole. There’s a lot here and the Carpenters mafia will find you via TH-cam algorithms. You are perceptive on the meaning of the song, this will help. As written the original title was Groupie (Superstar). Richard got permission to clean the lyrics for Karen’s more wholesome image. Be with you tonight was Sleep with you tonight. Richard also did the arrangement and made it a Carpenter song. The OG artists were Delaney and Bonnie in 1969, it’s on TH-cam as Groupie if you want to compare. Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell wrote it.
To keep you going down the rabbit hole I’m going to suggest, Close To You, We’ve Only Just Begun, Rainy Days and Mondays, for Rainy I’d recommend the “official video” AKA Live at the Desert Inn. It shows off Karen very well. I should mention but I bet it already has, I just started writing. K & R are sister and brother, R is older. Karen passed in 1983 at 32 from complications of Anorexia Nervosa. A devastating loss at the time and to this day. I’m so glad young people are discovering her and them now. Also I’ve never seen a reactor have issues with a Carpenters song. Richard doesn’t strike or block to my understanding. There is a need to see Karen in many of their videos so please unmask them. Enjoy!

Luther Vandross did a cover of this. This was a huge hit in the 70’s. This group had so many hits. Karen Carpenter had a very unique smooth voice.

The original version was released in 1969, under the title “Groupie”. This arrangement is brilliant. The lyrics describe a female groupie who fantasizes about loving a musician on the road.

Welcome to the 70's, where music was not auto tuned. Please fasten your seatbelt when the smoking sign is turned off. For the song I thought she was a possibly a groupie? I miss the HELL out of Karen;s voice. If the Carpenters had been around from the 80s to the present, it would have been fascinating to see how they would've keep up with the trends. We've Only Just Begun was her best IMHO. I'm not hintin' or anything, I swear! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
