Quite simply the finest female contralto in music history, and to my ears, the purest, most pitch perfect voice in all of music.

@marlamay Thank you for the validation. It was tough loving Karen back in the day. All my friends thought it was sissy music. But I persevered and endured because I knew an angel's voice when I heard it. Now, in 2024, so many new people are falling in love with this sweet soul's voice. So validating, now I am starting to cry... why????? Happens so often.....

Sir, you just stumbled into GREATNESS. Karen and Richard Carpenter were the #1 American act of the 1970’s. Bob Messenger on sax. I’ll be back…
I’m back, I had to leave and saw this, quickly. I see the Carpenters Army has arrived and is treating you with welcoming and informative arms. I’ll correct one comment I saw. I mentioned the late Bob Messenger. He was an OG Carpenter as he was one of the original band members. He was a triple threat. He played tenor sax, flute/electric flute and electric bass. Karen drummed on the first and 4th albums and scattered songs throughout. On the 4th album, Now and Then only Jambalaya was not her drumming, it was Hal Blaine. Hal was brought in for album 2, Close to You and did a lot of their studio drumming. He didn’t travel so for the majority of their run Cubby O’Brien was the road drummer. I’m sure you got a lot of suggestions and I like to give one that’s outside the box.
In 1970, so early on, they performed live and outdoors the Bacharach/David Medley. It was requested by Burt Bacharach and Richard put it all together. What special is it’s a showcase of Karen singing lead and harmonies live while simultaneously drumming. It was done at a military hospital in honor of Veterans Day for The Ed Sullivan Show. I’m an OG fan, I was 14 in 1970 when I bought the album Close To You. I hope you enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole. You knew on the first listen that this was beyond special and you are very right. There are NO BAD SONGS only lees GREAT ones. You have to rank them and it can be painful to choose. I’ll link the Medley below, it doesn’t get blocked. I have requested it a lot and they’re all up. It’s rare for a Carpenters song to get blocked but there may be some. The big ones, generally no. I hate that about the music industry, they don’t get what’s happening. #KeepingTheMusicAlive

Karen's voice is mesmerizing and her drum skills were 1st class; her brother Richard was a musical genius, he selected, arranged and produced all of their songs. You can thank him for that Sax solo. In their video "Close to you" you can see Karen playing the drums while singing, she was that good.

  • @daleb1279
    @daleb1279 ปีที่แล้ว +108

It was brother Richard's song choices, arrangements, keyboard skills, and the genius of stacking his and Karen's background vocals, that allowed his sister Karen's beautiful voice to soar and to top it off, she was a world class drummer, who viewed herself as a drummer who could sing. Sadly, she died from the effects of anorexia at the far too young age of 32. They had just over a decade of hits. Leon Russell who wrote this song and Superstar among others they recorded said he only ever wanted to hear Karen sing his songs.

The Carpenters were played in my house too many times to count when I was growing up. I love their music and amazing gifts. It was heartbreaking to hear about Karen struggling with the eating disorder that over time took her life. You will find great songs if you dive in. Her voice and songs will hit your heart every time. 😊

Warm buttered honey timbre, always perfectly on pitch with no studio gadget assistance, and in the recording sessions she nailed every single tune, every single time, in just one take. Perfection in musical beauty was her default setting. As the voice of The Carpenters, she set the soundscape for a generation... and then she was gone. She left us so much to cherish her memory for.

The Carpenters were a brother and sister duo, Richard and Karen. They did have a band that performed with them, but was mainly Richard on keys and Karen occasionally on drums. Some of their harmonies were created in the studio with a method Richard put together. Richard and Karen would create as many as 100 tracks of the same run at different keys and tones. They would then "stack" the tracks to get the results they wanted. At live shows they would have the band harmonize with them for some effect, but wouldn't be the same result as the stacked tracks.

Richard was a masterful arranger. Karen’s voice was pure, smooth perfection (without auto tune.) She had unbelievable breath control and she made you FEEL every word she was singing. Check out Superstar, Goodbye to Love (where the power ballad was birthed), and one of her drumming videos.

Richard and Karen Carpenter were brother and sister. Karen sung and Richard did all the producing and the arrangements and played the piano in the background. The background vocals were actually Richard and Karen using a technique called over dubbing . . . when they record their two voices together and they play one recording over another so it sounds like a lot of people singing, but it's only Richard and Karen. Karen Carpenter died at the age of 32 from anorexia.

Carpenters were my favorite group as a young kid. As I got older, I got more into rock and roll, but they remain in my top five. Karen had an absolutely angelic voice that, over forty years after her death, still gives me chills. She was also an incredible drummer. As a drummer myself, I was always in awe of her. However, legendary Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine played drums on this track as well as most of the other tracks on this album and other Carpenters albums.

The Carpenters got their inspiration from them and mostly all of the voices you hear are just Richard and Karen using multitrack recording for their harmony and backgounds for the full sound that they get. Richard arranged almost everything they recorded. Karen had a sublime voice and great drummer and Richard a genius at music arranging. Tragically she died way too soon.

You're about to fall into a very big rabbit hole here. Wait until you see Karen deliver the same vocals while masterfully playing the drums (which she did with the same level of expertise). She and her brother multi-tracked their two voices to create the "Carpenter Sound". Iconic. Get onboard, you're about to go for quite a ride! (Bob Messenger on sax on this song). By the way, this song ("A Song For You") is, in my honest opinion, in the top 3 best performances of theirs. Couldn't have picked a better tune to start with.

However, as I got older I came to love the Blues.❤ That journey led me to Leon Russell, who I fell in love with. He wrote this song and sang it beautifully. Sorry, I think it's his voice, but I prefer Leon's version of this song. A side note, Leon Russell was also a cowriter on the Carpenters song Superstar. He, Bonnie Bramlett and Delaney Bramlett. Also, there are some great clips of her on drums from the Budakon, Japan concert, 1974. She even plays a cover of "Johnny B. Goode" with another band member, Doug Strawn singing the lead. BRO, Back in the day, the radio was filled with the Carpenter's music!
With favorites like "Superstar"; "We've Only Just Begun", one of the most requested wedding songs ever!
"Rainy Days And Mondays" is a good song when you're in a "blue" mood.
You can't forget the Carpenter's at Christmas time! Karen Carpenter's voice gives shades of emotion regardless of the season.
Karen passed away much too early, with a physical heart that couldn't stand all the stress anymore.
She's always had dietary issues in the past, but her heart just couldn't beat any longer. RIP

They were so underrated and under appreciated in their time because they made easy listening music look easy to create. The truth being anything but. Love so much that new, younger listeners are discovering Karen! If you loved the sax solo here, check out Rainy Days and Mondays which also has a sax solo. For a more upbeat Karen, see Please Mr Postman; another sax solo.

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is a song completely different from their norm but is fantastic with a great arrangement by Richard Carpenter. Was put out at the beginning of the Star Wars era. Recommend it highly.

All those harmonies in the recordings are either Karen or Richard Carpenter dubbing the music. Richard was classical trained on piano and made their arrangements. Karen was a drummer. This brother and sister had so many hits.

Beautiful song here written by Leon Russell. I read it was for his then girlfriend, Rita Coolidge.
Karen Carpenter sings this beautifully, but Donny Hathaway’s version is amazing!

She was so young, too famous too fast, and died of anorexia. Beautiful talent.

I have to compliment you on actually listening. You listen better than most of the reactors out there. When you stopped the audio, I knew why. Really enjoyable to watch someone who's paying attention. Yes, those two were Richard and Karen Carpenter. Karen had to be coaxed out of her trap set onto the front of the stage because of her incredible singing. Richard arranged all the music, and wrote a lot of it. ALL the voices you heard were just them, overdubbed. It was a "he" who did the sax solo. Again, I have to compliment you on playing the audio version that actually included it, while a boatload of reactors play a video of the Carpenters on a TV show, which omitted the solo. I'm intimately familiar with it because I transcribed it for my jazz-improv class in college. The player was Bob Messenger.
I have a couple suggestions for them that most people aren't going to make. A lot of my listening was from LPs I bought, which contained many gems that never played on the radio. Just two... "Ordinary Fool" is a jazzy piece that has Karen sliding and swooping into and out of notes, really sultry-like. "Desperado" is a cover of an Eagles song that Karen soulfully interprets. Again, nice reaction. You got ears on! :)
