    Top of Ike, towing and still only at half throttle. The automotive industry has truly come a long way. I’ve made that drive several times and that is impressive by any manufacturer. These are good times in this segment for sure.

    Very impressive! This vehicle is probably best in its class by a good margin and this episode may be TFL Truck's best production yet quality-wise. You have raised the bar. GM and Chrysler have their work cut-out for them, the race is on -- its good for us all.

    great review. I am a little biased, currently on my second expedition, and hoping to upgrade to the 2018 soon. good point about towing help for the occasional tow-er. We tow a camper only about 4-5 times per year so any extra stability and assistance is welcomed, especially with a vehicle full of people.

    • @csh000
      @csh000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      scotty_rides we tow will a vehicle full of people too. I had a difficult time finding a 7 passenger SUV with enough payload to support both the camper and family before I bought my current SUV.
      Do you know what the payload ratings are for the new Expedition? I can't find it anywhere.

      I have and looked again since the revision. No mention of payload ratings or GVWR for the Expedition. Although I did see page 37 states the receiver is rated at 930 lbs max with weight distribution so that is limiting factor for me. I use 10% of trailer weight on the hitch as a minimum not a maximum.

I am new to the RV experience and would like to have feedback. I am not too much fan of a pickup all year long and thought this SUV might be the solution. Thank you

      Don Leamon Although when ebs first came out they had issues, those have been worked out. They're pretty damn reliable now.

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There should be some examples now that the EB V6 has been on sale since 2011 in the F-150, Flex, Explorer, and Lincoln MKT and Navigator. I doubt the EB V6 is especially unreliable, but when it comes time to fix something, the repair costs are likely to be higher than what's needed to fix an OHV V8.
      The mileage improvement claims have already shown to be largely nil.

    • @KB-bh9hp
      @KB-bh9hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SurelyYewJest Well there's always the v8 option with the 5.0. Personally, when I bought my explorer, I went with the 3.5 duratec, which is supposidly, a very reliable na engine, but I have no gripes with ecoboost engines, I just agree that a na engine will be cheaper to mantain, but that doesn't mean a eb is unreliable like you said, it just means it'll be more expensive to mantained over a long period of time, 10-15 yrs. I'm essentially just restating your points because I liked your post, well said.

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Puff the Magic Dragon I don’t believe there is a 5.0 option as of right now... I am kinda surprised by that but it makes sense the 5.0 while an incredible engine doesn’t really have a lot of low end torque to move a heavy SUV...or it wasn’t getting the CAFE numbers mpg Ford needed.

    I recently began driving an '18 Ford 150 Raptor and tow on occasion with a single axle trailer loaded right up to its GWR of 3,500# and tongue weight just under 400#. I thought I was nuts because I NEVER have to brake in tow mode on long steep downhill runs. It grade shifts excellently and I think (not totally sure) that it applies the brakes itself (no brake lights noticed) to hold back. So you guys having only one early on brake application on Ike, maybe I am not so nutty.

    I know that road very well. First drove it in 1973 when it opened. Drove Loveland Pass before that. Still like the pass, more scenic. When they first head up hill you see condos on the right. Owned one and a house and property for over 15 years. I might have driven that road 3 00+ times. The gas station they stopped at is 1/2 mile to the north. A 7-11.
    Was impressed by the trans grade braking. Someone said use cheaper brakes instead of trans. They do not know how to drive in the mountains. Have smelled overheated brakes many times at the. Seen several accidents from overheated brakes.
    In the last scene standing in the parking area. Look at the mountain behind the left .guy. That is Mt Bethel. The 2 dark vertical lines are snow fences to keep snow off the avalanche chute to the right, Loveland Basin ski area is a mile closer. Feb 1988 they got 77 inches of snow in 5 days. CDOT caused a avalanche there. Buried the interstate. I had to sit there 5 1/2 hours for one lane to get cleared.

      Yeah that's chevy.... can't tow can't OFFROAD for shit they get stuck in grass with 4x4 lol
      But as a Toyota fan - our yotas tow just fine no issues other than breaks & Toyota breaks although reliable absolutely suck .... tundra Tacoma FGT SGT TGT and most all Tacoma breaks sucked
      & Chevy can tow more weight but it's newer trucks suck at gearing!
      Most people who want to tow with tundras do air ride & stuff & some swap out our axles for Chevy 2500 axles for towing

    • @ilovetoyotatrucks
      @ilovetoyotatrucks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even Corolla & camery brakes suck .... the RAV4 06+ had decent brakes and the newest tundra has been improved but for towing I've herd it's still not going to compare to diesel braking wise.... & TWINN turbos on a 5.7L would just be scary AF....i imagine the supercharger does VERY well!

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. A couple others had really low brake app counts. There have even been times where a particular example of a particular truck model has had more or fewer brake apps than a previous example (of the same truck) they tested.
      The brake app test is useless IMO. I get the logic behind it, but the results they've gotten over the last couple years they've had it, indicates to me that there are factors outside just a truck's engineering that affect it.

    • @MrTruckTV

      As I recall they aren't the same size, one is smaller for faster spooling at the start.

    • @Stuka87
      @Stuka87 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are the same size, just mirrored from each other. They are really small turbos and spool quite fast. Which is why they have great torque, but fall on their face past 5000rpm. A compound turbo setup requires the exhaust from all cylinders to be routed to one turbo, which then feeds another turbo.

      All depends on the total weight of the trailer, Did you end up buying one? I have said I would never want to tow a trailer unless it was a heavy duty truck but now, with this expedition it has me rethinking that. Towing 6,000 lbs at 60 up the hill is impressive.

      Think of the expy as derated f150 because of heavier interior weight and more cushioned rear suspension. If you can live with slightly lower towing and payload, the expedition provides a better driving experience - especially with more passengers.

Living in the southeast I'm wondering how it will climb our eastern mountains on 95 degree days? Mostly an oil temperature concern with two turbos cooking oil?

      4 gauge Electric fans have belts? No wonder you think it takes 5 hours to change a fanbelt... On a more serious note, every modern car will be more complex than its predecessor. That's simply how technology has come about in these computers on wheels. Doesnt discount the capability and "TOP NOTCH"ness of the OP's comment though.

      4 gauge But the new fords are also much more reliable than the old ones. They may be more expensive to fix, but the trade off is they break alot less.

      @KB-bh9hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alan Bowers It doesn't mean the products will be unreliable. What's more reliable, a model t or a new ford? Thr answer is obvious, most of these will last hundreds of thousands of miles without many issues, that's just how new cars are. I agree they're harder and more expensive to fix, but the trade off is they don't need to be fixed near as much.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Puff the Magic Dragon sure I agree. My point was merely for 4 gauge who doesn’t seem to actually have experience on modern cars. Certain aspects can be more unreliable but like you said in general they are better than they were.

    This is why I always say Toyota may be more reliable suvs long term but overall ford does well in most areas. Technology,safety,towing,ride quality, family friendly=Grand scale of things better. My assumption is this may be a better tow rig than lets say a sequoia or landcruiser.

    What you guys can do maybe city driving MPG. Since they say 17 or whatever on these cars / trucks but its never accurate. Just like you guys do the highway maybe you can try at least 20 miles city and the rest we can calculate or 50 miles its not to long. I feel like you dont need to do the 100 miles city.

    • @KB-bh9hp
      @KB-bh9hp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D Jay T The only advantage of that would be offroading and maybe towing. Things most explorer owners will never do, I didn't say no owners, I said most. Plus, if you wanted a badass offroader , why not buy a raptor or the new Bronco that's rumored to be priced similarly to the explorer, according to a supposed ford engineer claiming they wanted a 30k starting price, but that's just a claim, who knows if it's true. The 2011 to current imo body explorers are great, among some of the best family cars out there, aside from hardcore offroading, they do everything well. They're safe, reliable, reasonable fast, attractive, comfortable, decently roomy, and enjoyable to drive. The old explorers were great, my grandparents owned one from the early 90s until 2010, when it was totaled and they now own a '04 explorer, they love them, but they love my 2017. I don't even have a loaded up model, it's the base because my parents didn't want a huge amount of tech features, plus we wanted a car that would be reliable long term. The higher end explorers are pretty reliable, but not as reliable as the lower trim levels it seems.

    This SUV looks promising for Ford...just hope the durability is there....this is a market GM has owned IMO with the Yukon Denali and Caddy Escalade...They owned the cheaper versions too like the Suburban and Tahoe....raising the bar is a good thing...I’m kind of blown away that there is no V8 option but then again Ford doesn’t have a V8 right now with enough muscle to propel this truck with authority, the 5.0 lacks the torque required.

    • @kingdaniel3519
      @kingdaniel3519 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You're shitting, right? The 5.0 lacks torque? It's putting out 400 lb-ft, that's more than enough to push the truck and your fat ass down the road with plenty to spare.

    • @benjaminwayneb
      @benjaminwayneb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Ford's 5.0 has 395 hp. and 400 ft lbs. of torque, G.M.'s 5.3 has 355 hp. and 383 ft lbs. of torque. The 5.3 is a dog compared to the 5.0.

    • @r.emp1re
      @r.emp1re 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think ford should try a 6.2 with cylinder deactivation ... If they can get more power out of a 5.0 than Chevy can with a 5.3 imagine a 6.2 ... I'm guessing 500 ft/lb of torque!

      I think Ford is kicking GM's ass to hell and back on the interior game. I legitimately think GM is taking five massive steps backward, going back to acres of hard, poorly fitting, and weak black plastics with therrible graining. I hate to say it, but I work at a Chevy dealer - I am entirely unimpressed with nearly everything they have out right now. I think Buick and GMC, on the other hand, are doing great interior-wise.

    Question: using a sway bar system is smart on the SUV because of the independent rear suspension. But how would you use a sway bar system when towing a boat? The tongues on boat trailers are so long I’m not sure how you would do that. Any thoughts?

    Its a timed test, but either its pedal to the metal, the speed limit, or 60 mph? Not sure how that equates to fair. If the expedition could attain 70 mph then why was it held at 60? Or was it full throttle? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just a bit confusing. Has the testing changed? Are they all going to do 60?

    7000 pounds is a hitch weight of AT LEAST 700 pounds. The three of you (assuming 225 pounds) weight almost 700 pounds so you were just at the cargo capacity of the vehicle. If the hitch weight is over 700 pounds, which I suspect it is, there's a good chance you were over the rated cargo capacity of the vehicle.

    Hi guys, here in the UK we have had severe weather (snow & ice) as a result of cold air from Siberia moving west over Europe. Is it possible with all your knowledge of off-roading and 4x4s to provide simple guidance of what sort of tyres work in which types of weather. A lot of people are buying small SUVs here in Europe, some with 4wd and some with 2wd. However when bad weather hits, the country grinds to a halt because people are uneducated about how to drive in bad weather, how to prepare their vehicles and what to do if they get stuck.
    I believe a simple video showing the different tyre types (winter vs all weather) and accessories such as snow socks, chains etc - how and when to use them would prevent so many unnecessary incidents
    Thanks - peace and love from the (freezing) UK 🤧

    With a payload under 1500 pounds it ain’t going to be too realistic towing much above 5000 pounds. Especially if you fill many of those seats.
    If this had 2000 pounds of payload available it would be a literally perfect rv hauler for a family of 4-5.

      Mostly correct, but vehicle has been out for two years now. Under 6500lbs and 23ft trailer, it performs amazing and minimal issues, those with problems are generally towing at or above 7500lbs with an insufficient wdh hitch and >30ft trailers... the area everyone is testing now is popular 6300lb uvwr 32ft trailers ... Mostly with good news from what I can tell, but lots of people using blue ox or pure pride $3,000 hitch setups to get rid of trailer sway danger.
