Remember seeing them on metro detroits Woodward Ave many times. Was the unofficial testing venue for all kinds of cars in the late 60s and early 70s.

Raced one on Woodward once, with my 66 Ambassador DPL 327, kept up well enough to get invited to join the AMC group that hung out by the Normandy intersection.

If I was going to build a 60s AMC I'd start with a 66 through 69 Rouge 2 door hardtop. For the motor I'd go in completely different direction. Start with a 4.0 and destroke it with a 199 crank. Bore to 3.900 for a 3.5 liter inline six. Forged rods and pistons. Sell the head and build a new DOHC head based on either two GM LQ-1 heads or the heads from an Infinity Q-45 VH V-8. Port fuel injection, tunable engine management system. Lean the engine over to the right to balance the weight side to side. Maybe a small supercharger for instant boost. Shoot for 375 to 400 hp. Six speed transmission. Up dated modern front suspension with rack and pinion. IRS in the back. 4 wheel discs. Lightweight body panels on the trunk lid, hood, front fenders, doors and bumpers. Lowered front and rear. Some discrete aero aids. Something unusual that you could drive on track days or for autocrossing.
Like Hot Rod used to say Dare to be Different. 32 Fords, Gen l/ll Mustangs and Gen l Camaros are boring.

Wow, you've given that a lot of thought and we think that would be an awesome build! Let us now if you ever do it and we'll come watch you blow people away at the track! Thanks for the comment!

Too old and my eyes really aren't good enough anymore for spirited driving. Did have a 68 AMX back in the day though.

This is one of those cars that you like, but wouldn't want to claim ownership of.
