  • In this episode of Engine of the Week, we’re talking about an AMC AMX engine build done by Rhyne Competition Engines in Gary, IN. To kick off the new build, the shop's GM Mike McKinney says all they could use was the customer’s original 390 cubic inch block, which they stroked to 442 cubic inches. Everything else was aftermarket parts. Check it out!

I love my AMC. Being a Kenosha WI AMC guy I really appreciate Brian Ambrosini getting Indy Cylinder Heads to make blocks, heads and intakes for the AMC platform. These are pricey but worth the money in the long run. My pump gas Indy engine makes 900 horse at the tires with the help from Indy and Procharger. Thank you Brian and Indy

390, 10.0/1 p, on AV fuel, stock bottom end, roller cam and rockers, Carter comp on top a dual plane, open headers for street racing...
blew every 4 speed tranny we put in it... 1973 Gremlin. 1978.
    Cops never attempted pursuit.
    What fun.

Lifter galley oil line, and external line from the oil pump have been done almost since these engines started race builds. Did my 390 the same way back in '83.

AMC's get down one of my fondest street racing memories growing up was my buddy Tom whom had a 68 javelin we built with a 343 very mild Port work on the exhaust bowls and a 300 duration 560 lift " roughf est" hydraulic camshaft 10.1 ,portsonic single plane, Mallory ig 4.56 diff... Why this was such a fond memory was my buddy Paul had a sweet 79 Z28 that had a 350 that he had built himself which had dart heads, Comp Cam, strip, dominator &4.11 rear and an NOS cheater system 125 hp. & A massive GM ego about how fast this car was lol both of these guys we're a couple of my best friends growing up although they didn't hardly know each other now this is a couple years out of high school 1990 what made this so fun was when it came to cars and engines growing up I had an Ace in the hole my father owns and operates his own automotive machine shop in Phx ..this 343amc was a really good combination whereas Paul's Camaro had a lot of expensive bolt stuff so when I told my friend this javelin was a good runner of course he said I'll smoke that turd AMC and the hook was set so Paul Z28 run 12.7 on the bottle little did he know the javelin run 12: 5 on the motor so needless to say we all know it's special kind of spanking that gets put on somebody who's really unsuspecting and overly confident that's why it's such a special memory because my buddy Paul absolutely positively could not believe this javelin did not have nitrous he searched it high and low with a flashlight but like I said no bottle no solenoids,... Classic mouth open as we pulled away putting an easy few car links on him he was gobstopped ill never forget that look on his face he just kept saying damn AMC unbelievable??? Sorry it was so long had to tell the story guys love the motor love the channel keep it up guys

So underrated and for those who have owned them in the past, putting up with being picked on by a lot of even just bullies was never fun. Turns out AMC had a superior engine design they did their homework and the phrase late on the scene, I think helped them. Little things like the decision to put forged steel crankshafts and rods on all 390s and 401s. American Motors had to do it better in styling design engineering reliability and if you watch the commercials they knew how to talk up their underrated underappreciated product.

Amen! There was an magazine that featured an ls with new Edelbrock blower setup, and another story with a 390 with an old school roots blower. Even though theLs had every advantage over the AMC, they got their asses kicked!

My dad rebuilt his 69 amx motor, but kept it 390 and had the pistons re done by someone local. Didn't change much about the engine and was able to keep it mostly original.

Been hanging out with them fo 0:53 for a long time. 😊 I want to bring MC back to the tracks around where I live in Wisconsin Kenosha baby

Very nice. It's too bad the best of the engines which was 71 to 79 didn't come out in the late 50s. AMC had a lot of performance potential unfortunately they squandered it. 530 horsepower is damn good.

The 4032 is the best slug” material so far to date, the next step would be the hyperutectic type same materials, with skirted insert polycarbonate type synthetics.. For street you will never really need it nor the thin rings NHRA guys use.
I’m actually building a 19 71 401 here in. early 2024, for my J10 Rig. 291-C heads are all done, block in shop almost done, will have this reroute oil line like displayed here.
    Mains #1-4 set at 0.0175 , just under 0.002” #5 main 0.00275” .just under 0.003” , rods 0.00175” clearance too.
Block will be drilled tapped to receive BBC cam plate for my roller 0.504” I/E lift cam.
Had local PNW shop grind the cam.
Will be using the Comp cams RRA and BBC guide plates, Pushrods to be the 040”restrictive so I don’t fill up my VC lids and drain the oil pan.
I plan to increase the oil pan capacity, about three Qt volume by adding 17Ga meal to sides stockpile pan and eliminate the starvation issue AMC are known from stock pan.
I've gone thru enough encounters, trying to discuss the LV upgrade with ppl on forums, FB and being a life long mechanic and around hydraulic machinery, know that is a PERFECTLY Good device design.
Most tractors use this exact thing internal / external both.
Automotive grade Copper hyd-line has about 5,000 PSI burst strength, NI-Copp material has about 8,500 BS, Steel lines has about 11,000 PSI, so there is NO issue there using and this very LV bypass-Design on our beloved AMC V8’s. NONE whatsoever.
Street - race app, perfectly fine.
I know some ppl LOSE their minds over this very thing because they Crave they are some supreme wisdom ONLY, is the standards what makes AMC work and Live.
    .
One thing will advise ppl is If you are using the LS chevy RA with trunnion needle bearing , there are Bushing replacements for them. Do those and get rid of the needle bearings which are wide spread known to fail.

@@Al-mx6ru I don't know anything about my AMX's history, It now has an Offenhauser intake manifold and an Edelbrock 1405 carb. It was most likely upgraded for unleaded gas, but I don't know if the pistons are original or forged. Much of the car is still original.

My guess would be at least 15k. I'm getting a 401 rebuilt, and using the stock crank and connecting rods, it'll still be 9-10k. This build uses a very expensive aftermarket stroker crank that adds something like 3-5k (can't remember the price), custom rods, EFI, etc.
