- It wasn't uncommon for Ford, GM and Chrysler to put their cars on drag strips and other racing venues. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" was an adage that really worked! Not to be left out, American Motors also fielded cars in all types of racing. Today's feature is what AMC put on the drag strips in 1969. This is the last Super Sport AMX ever built by Hurst Performance #52. The rarity of this car and the quality of its fresh restoration will surely please the muscle car and race car enthusiasts!

I had the 1970 AMX 390 4 speed back in 1974. I paid $4000 dollars for it with 3000 miles. Could have kicked my ass for getting rid of it.

Owned a 69' AMX #9076, Red with white stripes, Go-pak, 390. It had sat 11 years after being used for Khana's. Never got it up to where I wanted it and had to sell it a few years later. The next owner painted it blue and then totaled it a few months later. Sad... This one is a beast!

What a wonderful find and brilliant restoration. Lucky Dan to have all 5 of the red/white/blue cars and to have purchased it from the original owner who still had all that documentation. I can forsee a great AMC exhibit at a future MCACN should Bob want that.

What a beauty. In the mid 60s, I had a white 4dr Ambassador with the "Rebel" drive train; floor shift, 327 4bbl, 444-1 posi. A sleeper. Absolutely great street racer. Beat lots of "better" cars in Renton, WA. 1st time I went to Puyallup Drags, I won my 1st 12 races. Lots of fun.

That is so funny my 1969 coupe 340-s barracuda raced it 60 thousand miles drum brakes never had a problem stopping it usually went 140 mph daily you have shown me a motor I will build god will give me a few more years

Absolutely beautiful example and glad to hear it will be thoroughly thrashed on at the track! AMC PEOPLE in my experience are a quietly confident group and rightly so. My ss story is this. My brother-in-law was a member of this group and had at the time 89-90? A 71 AMX and a not original 68 and was always looking for of course a ss. The first part he found and I have no idea how was the intake. The gentleman who had it was not an American motors man and had no idea what he had. It is one that has amc part number along with edelbrock. I believe he wanted 800 for it but during their conversation had relayed his desire to add a blower to his 😖Chevy. Well we showed up and inspected the manifold then I was signalled to retrieve the lovely rebuilt and polished 6/71 blower we brought courtesy of Detroit diesel and built by them and polished by myself. Total investment 0$. Then found not five miles from home a gentleman who had hoarded amc parts from a dealer and had a rambler convertible that was run in some round the world rally!? He wouldn’t sell the rambler but all the parts went home. Trannies,intakes, small chamber dog leg heads bare in the boxes,blah blah!! The car! It was in Georgia, don’t know the city but the house was next to a women’s prison and the city was the capital at one time. Now homework done we drive down from Ontario trailer and check in hand (in a76 mk4 Lincoln! ) the car was a rolling chassis everything seemed right, engine was there but car had been hacked badly to accept a big chev so firewall and tranny hump all destroyed. Last thing, now I might get the numbers wrong here. We pulled the steering box off the frame to check the serial number, and yep it didn’t match the dash. It was the right car. 49 on the frame51 on the dash. Supposedly a hurst mix up? True or not that’s what my brother had researched. Unfortunately we passed on the car and it was bought and is I believe restored and back amongst the few. RIP Peter DeFreitas. A true fanatic that was driving his 71 his 68 and his scrambler until the end. Long winded I know but man he loved those cars! My sister will have them I’m sure until her son inherits them! Cheers.

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk thank you I'll be looking forward to that. That car sounded magnificent and look the same. I like all things muscle it doesn't matter the make or model. But something that rare it's just never seen not even on video much less in real life. To certain point I guess I'm a closet AMC guy. There's even a specific gremlin body style with a specific front grill treatment that I would like to have. I came close to buying a rebel SST but even though it had been wrecked and sure enough I have. But I don't think cars available anymore because the old boy passed on so did his wife and everybody including his great-great grandchildren by no exaggeration has a dog in the fight. The man had 500 cars and I was privy with his consent to go and look at all of them. No he had collections of every make and model type. He did group them together and they were parked outside someone fared better than others. But he had a mountain lion that had her Nest or layer whatever they call it. Right in the property among some of the better cars. It was loaded with rattlesnakes. So nature did a real good job of protecting his collection. But anyway I could go on about some of the AMC stuff he had and probably still there some of it. Okay I'll stop there and I'm known across TH-cam car channels for my lengthy commentary so my initial commentary got a frame it as my grandma would say. Sometimes you just don't need a whole bunch of words to describe the circumstance or classic vehicle. Thanks for bringing these to us

I have been a fan of AMC cars since the mid 60's. The 390/401 engines were very strong and revved like no other. My friend had a "The Machine" back in 1972, he sold it in 1976 because of gas prices. To this day he hates himself for that.
If he could talk he'd say I'm the quickest super stock ever made,behind the hurst hemis,so dominant the NHRA shoved me from ss/e all the way down to ss/c and I still won.

Crowed Pleaser ! Everybody Stood up in the Stands to Watch the Front end Come off the Ground When the Hurst A.M.X Ran ! Super nice Edition to the Series ! I heard the S.T.R.-11 Cross-Ram Manifold was Built for 2 Cars Since it Split in Half top and Bottom the other was for a chevy z28, and the Intakes are Bigger then the 202.25 1.58 exhaust ?.A.M.C Valve Cover Breathers Keep the Positive Crankcase Pressure from Blowing the Seals, Perking ,wich When Plugged Can Cause Idle Surge Also .

I remember seeing a car very similar to this one in the late 70's or early 1980's at Seattle International Raceway ( SIR) now pacific Raceways in Kent WA. . It may not be this particular vehicle, however it seems very familiar. . That was a long time ago and I was into Hemi's at the time. 😆.

We called that type of front wheel/tire "Pizza Cutters" My GT350 has the original blue "overspray" around the trunk, rear of the hood and even some blue overspray on the gas tank, Shelby also did a rush job on the blue stripes just like your AMX. Thanks for sharing your car through,

@@IfThisCarCouldTalk I liked that the over-spray was put back, some judges "I hear" don't like it when a car is over restored. One of the worst offenders is restored WWII jeeps. Some jeeps are too perfect when finished. Have a great day.........

Is this car for sale? My dad owned one in 69 or 70, but I cannot find the last reported owner, other than he was still drag racing it in 2003. Unfortunately that was 20 years ago.... But I've been dreaming of trying to find an authentic Hurst AMX for decades.
