I took one of these for a test drive from the AMC dealer in Vallejo, CA in 1969 while I was in the Navy's NTDS Electronics School at Mare Island. Looking back on it, I have to laugh at the salesman's comments. He told me that the company would pay for any noise tickets but you have to deal with any speeding tickets. The little "flipper" air intakes just in front of the windshield were popular then. It had the similar paint job as this one (at least the factory version) and I had to be careful to get off the city streets and out to the freeway. The city cops knew that this things were on the lot. If they just hung around within a block or two, somebody was gonna light one up and they'd catch him!

@@MrGaryGG48 I was about 18 when my friend bought his new. I laughed when I saw it! Looked like a goofy Rat Fink cartoon. I stopped laughing at the end of first gear, pretty impressed through second!
Southern California was hot rod Mecca. The rarest cars were everywhere. No one knew what the hell this thing was, and there were a lot of butthurt feelings from gapped big block chebbies and Mopars. The best factory hot rod that was targeted for street racing.

@@outlawbillionairez9780 While I was attending that electronics school at Mare Island, one of my instructors bought an AMX. It had the 390 V8, 4 speed, and a 4:56 rear end!
He organized a BBQ out at the beach (about 50 miles west of Mare Island) at the end of the school, and most of the class drove out there. On the way back to the school, I tucked in behind the AMX with my 1967 BMW 1600... and stayed there! Of course, he could out run me on the straights but with a couple of corners and little traffic to slow him down, he couldn't get away. It drove him nuts. We stopped along the way for a break and he walked back to my car. He asked me, "Just what the hell is in that thing?? Nothing keeps up with me." I tried to look innocent and told him, "it's got just 96 cubic inches, 96 hp, and a one barrel." Then I mentioned that the secret weapon was that I rarely used the brakes. He could easily walk away under power but I always caught him in the curves or the traffic. It helped that he just flat died at 105 while if I was careful, I could get up to about 110-115 and he couldn't do anything about it. It bugged him, but he still laughed about it.

And now I happy ASF that you showed what happens when you’ve a person behind the wheel of a vehicle with that kind of power that isn’t deserving of such power because he’s not responsible enough to have routine service. Done to make sure everything is safe to drive. In the '50s to '80s my dad owned Marshall Fenn Ltd, for a decade or so the ad agency of record for AMC Canada. So all he drove were AMC cars from about '68-'80 -- AMX, Javelin, Gremlin, Pacer, Concorde, Ambassador wagons. I LOVED the AMX, a true muscle car, which my mother and father hated for the same reason (they were not go-fast people, like their son is). Later, dad bagged Kaiser Jeep, so we had Jeeps, too. By around '82, AMC was in trouble and merged with Renault (of France), becoming AMC/Renault. After that dumb idea fizzled, the whole shebang got bought out by Chrysler. By that time I was in my mid-20s, in office furniture sales in Toronto, and ended up furnishing the whole Toronto (actually, Bramalea) Assembly Plant that started out as AMC/Renault, then became Chrysler/Jeep/Eagle by the time they built it and started producing cars. That plant's since produced Dodge Chargers, Challengers, 300s and god knows what else. All trivia... of no use to anyone but me!

I don't know who told you an AMC was a truck motor that wouldn't turn high rpms . 30 years ago i built a 79 AMX with 304. It would turn almost 9k rpm . Only problem i had was heads kept trying to come up at around 7300. I used arp studs to hold my dart heads down. I wish i had kept that car but i unfortunately destroyed it because the bell housings kept breaking on my 4 speed. I pulled the motor and put it into a 78 ford lwb pickup. We had to put turnbuckle and chains to heads to hold it into truck. It would break the motor mounts repeatedly. It was geared so heavy you couldn't put it in 4th until you were at above 70mph. Fastest damn truck i ever had. It would scare hell out of you.

First of all, I want to say I love these little cars! For the auto manufacturer, Rambler, to have the notion to make such a car makes me a fan from the start. However, this was not a 13.50 et car straight from Hurst as this man implies. My dad had a 69 Charger R/T. The car was bone stock automatic, with a 3.91 positive track differential, running 10 inch Inglewoods. (not sure about the exact width)
We pulled up to an Exxon gas station. The attendant had one of these Hurst Rambler Scramblers parked in front of the station. He asked my dad if he thought his Charger could keep up with that thing, pointing to the Scrambler. Dad said he thought he could. Dad had been racing this car at a local drag strip and was consistently bringing home the class trophy. His best et was 13.95. Since my brother and I were riding with our dad that day, I rode in the Scrambler with the owner to balance the weight load of the two vehicles. This was really not much of a race. The Charger left him at the starting line and kept pulling away the entire race to end by several car lengths lead. This race was repeated with the same result. I noticed as I rode in the scrambler, the 390 ci engine seemed to lack an upper RPM range. The acceleration seemed to level off at around 4,500 RPM. It could eventually reach 5500 RPM, but it took a while to get there. Based on my experience, this car was a high 14 second to 15 second car in pure stock form. I sure with the proper upgrades, this light little car could have been a real beast, but in stock form, there were many cars from that era that could beat it.

    • @paulplack490
      @paulplack490 หลายเดือนก่อน

The quoted 14.3 seconds in AMC's magazine ads was based on a magazine's road test at the time with the standard 3.54 limited-slip rear end and stock tires, on the street. With the optional 3.91 gears, 7" slicks and a prepared surface, they'd run about 13.4 at a little over 100. But you're right - with the stock cam and manifolds and Carter 600 CFM carb, they were rated at 315 SAE gross HP at 4600 RPM, so they were pretty breathless by 5K.
Available "Group 19" parts sold over the counter at dealers made much more power at higher RPM, but oiling mods were needed to keep them alive in racing applications. Still, all in all, a valiant attempt to compete in the performance market by a company strapped for cash. And certainly unique!

I am sure like in other families we use to jokingly refer to AMC as almost a car. Still liked them and were impressed by more than one of their performance. Even the little 258 6 cylinders could be pretty quick in a Hornet or Gremlin.
One year at the Kingman AZ air and auto show a little Gremlin showed up with a 401 in it. It was beating all kinds of cars in the drag races.
Super nice build on the SC Scrambler. In hindsight maybe should have said back then almost a Chrysler. Was sad to see the car side of AMC die off but happy to see it join Chrysler rather than fully disappear.

I get it .. Museum car but the whole entire thought behind the car was how badass and how fast it was with it being wrapped with protective film..it deserved a good burnout .. that's what the hell it was built for not just Museum but to represent what that time meant in automotive history.. obviously this comment is not intended towards autotopia la .. I absolutely love your guys's content

Kills me to know how nice and capable this car is...and going to rot in a museum. Why Why why
Do it down the road after a ton of miles were put on it. Love to see this go down a track.

This was one of my "Hero" cars when I was growing up. Along with the Rebel Machine. Couple things I have an issue with...
No AMC guys would call these Scramblers...it's pronounced ess-see rambler.
IMO they went a little overboard with the paint...too much metal flake and the side panel colors are way too big even for an "A" scheme repro. I'm a fan of the "B" scheme paint.
The smaller Ram Air scoop suits the car much better.
This unibody was introduced in 1963 and lasted through the American, Hornet, Concord, and Eagle nameplates so over twenty five years for that basic structure. They were cheap but they rode better than any Falcon, Chevy II, or Valiant derivative from that era. The motors were industrial at best but the rest of the car was actually built pretty well.
