My stepfather sexually abused all of us children from a very young age. When my mother found out she packed us all in her car and left. My mother never forgave herself but the fact she was our savior, never questioning our truths was instrumental in our healing. I became a Sexual Assault Counselor helping others through their trauma.

Years ago I asked the volunteer coordinator for the rape center in Lancaster, PA if they ever got calls from Mennonite and Amish girls. “Are you kidding? 86% of our calls are from Mennonite and Amish girls about their fathers, their uncles, their brothers, and even their grandfathers.” This woman deserves so much praise and respect for standing with her children through such horrific terrorizing. Bless you and your children, Audrey.

WOW! 86%...yeah, I knew that that went on in Amish / Mennonite circles, but I had no idea it was THAT high. With numbers like that, there are a couple of Amish grocery stores near me that also make excellent sandwiches that I've always loved. But with statistics like that, huh-uh. No more.

Terrible suffering, the lady & her precious children went through, but thank God who freed them! I have a lot of admiration & respect for the lady- surely her resolve & tenacity to achieve freedom, if not full justice, was used by God! I've never been able to digest the depravity of the human heart that is bent on covering injustice. So sad that those Amish made the girls think Church is the worst place, & probably that God is not the wonderful Person He really is.I pray for this family to know the real God.

What Audrey said about romanticizing the culture struck home to me. I grew up in Michigan, where the Amish were not all that unusual, but it's just the touristy stuff you are allowed to see. Pretty quilts and home made jams. You hear about the barn-raisings and see the horse and carriages ambling along the side of the road, and everyone looks so peaceful and happy. The fact that the man of the house might knock his wife and kids around or molest his daughters is the last thing that would occur to you. Thank you for raising awareness.

exactly, as they present God loving, God fearing., I respected the neighbors i have and also "wanted to be like them or romanticized", as it is a hard way of life, but very simple. Knowing her story and now others, shows yet again, then men never take responsibility for all the pain, trauma and heart ache they cause. She is so brave to leave and be shunned ect. I no longer will be doing business or driving my neighbors any more , now that i know what really goes on behind closed doors, as when i did drive them there were tiny subtle signs, but until you see stories of women who left or tell what really happened then you really don't know because again they quote scripture and are god loving god fearing people. I'm glad i know the truth now and i just pray that 1 day law enforcement will help the women and the women 1 day will have the chance to save themselves and their children! My new prayer for these communities is that the men really find God and stop abusing their women, ( and children), and my other prayer is that the cycle ends. I will pray that women will find new ways to learn what is abuse and what is real love!

@@lgspeical7879You mentioned that you drive them & that you now going to stop because of the Deceitfulness behind this society. Had me thinking that maybe your act of kindness might be seen as an escape route for a woman or child knowing you are allowed to be in the area. Of course I may have misunderstood but if I was trapped and I saw how there might be an unsuspecting means of getting out - like hiding in the trunk or back seat of a vehicle that’s been seen as acceptable outsider. I was friends as a child with Audrey's daughters while they lived in PA. My family has gone through a somewhat similar situation to theirs, and ended up reconnecting during the pandemic as both of our families were going through court trials. Audrey was an awesome support for specifically my mom during my family's court process, and so from experience, I know how strong and brave she is. I'm so grateful that both our families are safe now and working through healing, and I'm so glad that Audrey's able to share her story so people are aware how much goes on behind closed doors in the Plain community. Plain communities are so romanticized to the extent that folks refuse to believe horrible things happen, so this type of advocacy is so very important.

My own SA experience was at the hands of an LDS church elder, who's wife refused to acknowledge what was happening even though it was happening to her own daughters, too. She asked us why we can't just let it go. My own mother, although she took action eventually as I attempt to seek justice these days, did not attempt to press charges or pursue anything, caving to pressure to change wards instead. Even though I finally got her to talk about it, for nearly 30 years of my life, she just tried to pretend it never happened and actively avoided the topic or any responsibility for how it was handled. I'm sure you know well the frustration from your own situation, so I just want to say it again: Thank you.

After enduring years of abuse myself, I thought I’d found my Prince Charming. Everything I did in my life was to protect my children, he knew that. Thirteen years later, my children came to me with the accusations against him. I immediately believed them. We all loved him, the kids would not have made it up. It absolutely broke me. I ended up in the mental hospital a year after the report, and weeks after he plead guilty. Those years are like a blank, it’s just like a blur. Somehow I got a job, went back to school, dealt with damaged children and started counseling. He only got 10 years adjudication. He never even saw the inside of a cell - he reported to police booking with an attorney and bail bondsman. He arrest was front page news in our little town (the kids & I had a different last name). No one from our church ever called me, no note of sympathy, not even the pastor came by or called. Some people even avoided me at Walmart or community events. What he did was the ultimate betrayal. I was so angry, hurt, guilt ridden, and just plain sad for a long time, but finally had to let it go so I could move forward. I’ve never remarried, don’t even date, and don’t trust anyone. I’m glad to see how many here who have experienced what have, were able to move forward and heal.

So much better if it’s your mother. I also had a lousy marriage, although nothing as colossally toxic as what you endured, and lost my ability to trust. I can only imagine, as a mother, how mentally and emotionally broken I would be after finding out that the man I married, and had trusted my babies with, had violated and betrayed my trust AND violated my children and broken their hearts as well. As parents, we are given to guilt so easily for so many reasons because we want so much to protect our children in the best way we know how! What a strong woman she is, to have had to overcome so much adversity in her childhood, and then to have to overcome even more adversity as a mom and wife. My God, that’s enough to make me want to invoke Moses’ law of an eye for an eye. Even if they didn’t harm women and children. The animals being mistreated would be enough for me to be so angry. Then add in what these men have done to their own wives, daughters and sons! How many generations has this been festering??? We all need to rally behind brave women like Audrey and help it be an easier option to get the people out who need and want to get out! After the service, I went through the reception line and said to the pastor, "I hope you realize that the blood of that child is also on the boys hands". He said nothing. I gave him a week. I went back the next Sunday to see if he recanted anything he said. He did not, and I never returned to that church to hear his misogynistic word! This woman is a tower of strength. An example for us all. Thanks for letting us have this chance to see a fuller picture. I was victim of Bahia and new agers. Mine was nothing in comparison, but it's given me an insight into religious mentalities. It is scary that something always claiming to do good, that it is needed yet will deny all. I know I will never get over the readiness to blindly accept their lies by the public.

Audrey, I hope for you an unending well of support and care and community. You are so incredibly strong and creative and I wish you had been given kindness instead of this nightmare, but thank you for standing up for your daughters. May your strength send ripples through those communities that allow more women to break free.

I hope you and your children were able to get counseling.
My father SA 4 of the 5 girls in our family.
I'm sure my mom knew about it. Started when we were just very young children.
Years later my mom still said.....Get over it ! I'm sick.of hearing about it !….
I made sure I got counseling. Years of it. Probably reason why 3 ofus 4 became drug addicts. Two have died due to drug use. It's called self medicating. Although my one sister who died young, did try to talk to a professional about it,and actually so did my oldest sister ( I just remembered that). She was instructed to write my mom a letter about how she felt about it ,etc. The letter asked my mom why she didn't stop our dad, protect us me My mom got so outraged she threw the letter away, blamed my sister ( as she did when first found out) and was cold to my sister and would hang up on her Everytime she called mom, even on Holidays.
Once I realized my mom knew, and didn't bother to stop the SA by my dad, my relationship with her changed..Before she was everything to me. After that, the hurt of knowing she allowed it to happen for years,I've never fully gotten over. She's gone now,and I'm still so angry with her for not stopping him. We were 3 when it started..Continued thru teens with my oldest sister. I ran away as a teen. A really dysfunctional family with a Narcissist mom, and a Narcissist dad.

You are one terrific woman. I am in awe of you. Many things you talked about resonated with me and I wasn't born or lived Amish, but we lived in the country and were so sheltered. When I started my period, I never knew what it was and my mother threw a pad and a belt on the bed, slapped me on the back, and said, You're an old woman now and that was it. I didn't know what to do with it and I had to ask my sister. I didn't know my body parts either until I asked my husband. I have been recently diagnosed with PTSD from my childhood and I am 68 yrs old and have so many things that happened in my so-called childhood, that I have violent walking nightmares. I wish you and your family the very best.

You are a great and strong woman. You should be very proud of how you protected your children.
The fundamentalist societies that place all the blame on the women are creating the abusers. Yes, people have sexual thoughts but obsessing every minute that women are trying to tempt them, they teach girls to be ashamed, they teach boys to think those thoughts are girls' fault and they create adults who complete those viscous circles by spending their days obsessing about how women are trying to lead them astray.

These kind of things have leaked into the Mennonite circles as well, with the women having to do so much to keep the men pure. Downcast eyes, high necklines, full skirts, no pullover sweaters only cardigans,.....
Fortunately there ARE good churches out there that upholds godly living. For anyone who's thinks the plain churches are all peaceful and holy, they are NOT!!!

It's not only the Amish! My ex, a Lutheran Brethren (Synod, Fergus Falls, MN), though we lived in ND at the time, raped all three of my daughters. I was *shunned* and abused by the whole synod, the countries surrounding where we lived--and, he got off scott-free! He got away without paying child-support. And, ND Courts gave him all holidays and vacations, including Mother's Day! And, when my girls didn't want to go with their dad, the Courts threatened to put me in jail! Wow!
However, though not Amish, all the other manifestations this woman relates was applied, Bill Gothard was big (Basic Youth Confliths); courting, devotions, first night--and, boy, 'the woman is responsible, as mentioned here, for the purity before marriage and his satisfaction afterward (even if he was impotent, figured out anger can be used instead of arousal, which makes all encounters rape)... Oh, man!
I suffer CPTSD. These people can absolutely destroy lives!
