Eh it's also technical effort. As opposed to when they were new and people were pushing the envelope as a new thing. It's not really artistic design, just more effort. It's an interesting thing because while you can say global illumination in an engine is more "advanced", there are old games that use completely baked lighting and shadows that looks better in linear hub levels, because they put a lot of effort into manually getting that effect right by hand rather than simply having it all done automatically by the engine. It’s a shadow of a shadow. I’ve never seen a studio literally destroy their own game franchise’s legacy like Rocksteady has. Honestly the way they did Batman was horrible.
SweetBaby Inc (woke writing/game consultancy) worked on this project, to 'improve' Rocksteady's ESG score. You can tell even with details as simple as moving Harley's bat so it covers her butt as she walks, as opposed to AK where it was tilted to one side because she's walking in a confident, show-offy way. In AK the devs gave her animations personality, that included her awareness of her own nice physique. She flaunts it. But that's objectifying, says SweetBaby, because the player can look at it! Tilt that weapon way down so it obscures her butt! Let's remove those parts of Harley's character, turn her into a generic wacky girl with a blunt weapon. Then have her look at her old costume from those prior games and call it a "phase she regrets". So progressive!
@@blamcheese Sweetbaby Inc. is one of the biggest enemies in the gaming world. I'm very curious about who's behind them and what their ultimate goals are.

So in 9 years they've achieved : - Significant downgrade in lighting and weather effects - No more extra time and effort towards animations and costume design - That impactful weighted combat is now gone for mobile game tier combat - The dark and heavy atmosphere is now a catoonish, goofy out of place feeling in characters and setting That's just sad. Edit: Ok so it's actually a fair point that both these games don't have to feel dark and heavy, my bad. However in terms of how much the atmosphere and settings are likeable and unique, I think the difference is more than obvious.
The Suicide Squad was always cartoonish to be fair. Batman was supposed to be dark and heavy because it's inherent to the character. Also, this is set in Metropolis and not Gotham, two polar opposites in terms of looks. Other things are unforgivable but people forget this isn't a Batman game
Yeah, the atmosphere is meant to be different, but this doesn't even have an atmosphere, it's FLAT in terms of lighting, artstyle, everything. And the colours! It seems to be a trend they just make every special effect rain rainbow or something, but it looks dumb. There's not art in this, it has zero aesthetic value, or emotional value, or anything. It's just an overly expensive mess of a game. @@mrqeufeus

Batman Arkham Knight was so terrible on release it literally got a full country wide refund in Australia because it was completely unplayable and broken. @@Tabako-san The launching of the game was messy as shit, but AK's story and gameplay were genuinely some of the best in the entire Arkhamverse - assuming Suicide Squad actually does take place in the Arkhamverse, which it might not be since Shark and Waller are alive, and Deadshot isn't white.
Current Next Gen means: Unfinished games with promises of a full complete game 3 years later or so with battle passes and pricey microtransactions and add-ons.
Because the new gen consoles are a con the technology really doesn't warrant this to be a next gen exclusive Arkham knight looks like it would be harder to run.
@@blamcheeseand also lazy devs. They are adopting technologies rather than the implementation of their creativity and even worse, most of the developers now using upscaling for the graphics, so that there will be no optimizations needed. Imagine playing at 720p upscaled and calling it as "next gen". Those are the days where we don't have fancy graphics options called ray tracing or anything and still producing better graphics than today!
Lighting Also unrelated but when this guy runs suicide squad he's running on the worst possible graphic settings. Still though arkhams Lighting is PEAK
Seeing these modern games with their highly advanced graphics, there is one common thing they are always missing, and that's an understanding of lighting. Games coming out lack proper reflections, deep blacks etc. which gives off that matte colour look that we see nowadays.
Thank you for describing what I didn't have the words for. It was the biggest difference I noticed in the entire video. The best words I could come up with to describe it were "pastel" and "samey"
AK sounds so lively, SS always sound so empty and lifeless, the sound design is awful, like it's missing so many effects and environmental sounds to make the world feel alive. It sticks out like a sore thumb in the cutscenes, like watch the first handful of cutscenes for both games and notice the lack of sounds in SS.
Techincally the sound is might not be crisp. I would expect crisp sound to be like a crispy potato chip sound. Eh ignore my ramblings, I get your sentiment.

Funfact: Arkham Knight is running on a modified version of unreal engine 3 due to budget contraints. That just tells you how commited the old Rocksteady team was to their craft
I think they also were more comfortable working on their in house modified Unreal 3 than switching to the brand new and untested Unreal 4. They had built Asylum and City on Unreal 3, and instead of throwing all that work out to start working on Unreal 4, they kept with what they already knew.
Maybe budget constraints is the wrong way to describe it. Unreal Engine 4 was very unproven at the time and also had a lot of issues until later in the engine's lifecycle.
It was actually unreal 3.5 so basically unreal 3 with some features from unreal 4’s beta at the time. But overall it was modified and probably better than current unreal 4

@derbyblade9572 actually Arkham knight has a shit ending (I'm putting my explanation here since my other comment got deleted for slurs. How annoying, anyways the reason I consider Batman Arkham's ending shit. It's he loses in such a dogshit way, which would NEVER happen to Batman. He gives up his belt which has most of his gadgets in them, I say most because Batman SHOULD have other gadgets for lock picking in his suit just like in the animated series and the comics but no he doesn't then belt is the only thing makes Batman dangerous against gunmen then. Even though he doesn't NEED his bat suit to take down gunmen it just makes it easier, we see this in the Arkham origins cold heart Dlc. But he just willigly gives up on his life as Bruce Wayne all because scarecrow was holding a pistol...but scarecrow is ALONE WITH NOBODY HELPING HIM OUT, man! Batman is held at gun point! If only he could move so fast he could knock the gun outta scarecrows hand and knock him out at the same time! (Referring to the Multi fear takedown which is Canon and I don't care if it's supposed to show the thugs too scared to shoot properly because he's still able to dodge bullets and rockets in game which both surpasses the speed of sound And he can't outspeed scarecrow? A Fodder who gets one tapped by Gordon? It's almost like he's forgotten like he's Batman similar to how Shepard forgets about his godly Charisma in mass effect 3 out of nowhere.)
it has an over-saturated filter to compensate for this, but consequently very low contrast (resulted in lighter shadows and less light-to-dark differentiation). Contrast makes things pop and can make otherwise dull graphics look gritty and detailed. The second game was obviously going for a lighter, more playful look but in some areas it just doesn't look right. I also don't understand the unnecessary atmospheric fog affect, it makes things even harder to see in front of you.
To add to this, it looks fine during the day because the colors are a lot more visible under the light but during night time the low contrast makes things significantly harder to see.
That's the price you pay for every game having "upscaling in mind" nowadays. How can you afford shadows and ambient occlusion when you cant even afford to run the game at native res anymore?
@@kristoffseisler2163 Even aside the shadows and ambient occlusion, at a base level, suicide squad is STILL visually inferior on so many levels. Stop trying to ignore the REAL issue, which is laziness and mass cost-cutting despite the industry being more profitable than it ever was before. Sweet Baby Inc at work here.

- Significant downgrade in lighting and weather effects

- The dark and heavy atmosphere is now a catoonish, goofy out of place feeling in characters and setting
That's just sad.
Edit: Ok so it's actually a fair point that both these games don't have to feel dark and heavy, my bad. However in terms of how much the atmosphere and settings are likeable and unique, I think the difference is more than obvious.
I think costume design is the one thing they did actually put effort into lol
The Suicide Squad was always cartoonish to be fair. Batman was supposed to be dark and heavy because it's inherent to the character. Also, this is set in Metropolis and not Gotham, two polar opposites in terms of looks. Other things are unforgivable but people forget this isn't a Batman game
Yeah, the atmosphere is meant to be different, but this doesn't even have an atmosphere, it's FLAT in terms of lighting, artstyle, everything. And the colours! It feels like SS has no shadows on any objects.
it has an over-saturated filter to compensate for this, but consequently very low contrast (resulted in lighter shadows and less light-to-dark differentiation).
Isn't SS mostly missing shiny reflections that pop out?

Yet somehow the cutscenes seem very high production. Feels like the game was made in another studio meanwhile the cutscenes are made in a movie stuido😭
@@qadi796yeah the best thing about the game is the character face models and fidelity of the cutscenes. They look like real people. Incredibly expressive. But that should be expected in 2024 with how far motion capture has come. The actual GAME content is so bland it feels like a mobile game at times
That’s weird since they spent tons of money on ads for it. So I’m told anyway.
@@qadi796 a lot of games nowadays care more about putting effort in the cutscenes than in the gameplay

it's so strange how all of the dynamic range/contrast is drained resulting in a grey mist
Post-2010s cultural revolution left everything feeling grey, joyless, Soviet. Who could have guessed it would happen?
@qoph1988 yeah the impact of Gamergate beyond just video games in addition to a rise of fascism and ecological collapse being ignored is truly disturbing. a shitty video game is much more important than any of this though.
Noticing that in a lot of games lately, RE comes to mind first

@@qoph1988Soviet art had great vibrant aesthetics, Western propaganda always made a point that the Soviet Union was all about style and lacked substance.
More people must realise that it's not how many pixels a game has that makes it look good, but rather the art and lighting. Those two are FAR more important and end up making the product look sooo much better for years to come.
the game look like PUBG Mobile with Suicide Squad event skin
This is why the older games looked so good
@@Dipj01[some] older games looked this good. Many didnt. And this isnt a fair comparison.
@@Dipj01Arkham Knight is a smaller game made run at 1080p 30 frames. Suicide Squad is a multiplayer game attempting to run at 4K, 60 frames per second.
The Matrix unleashed runs at 1080p 30 frames so extra horsepower was available. This generation, 60 frames per second framerate is prioritized so there is less extra horse power available to make games look much better.
However gamers boldly voted that they rather a focus on 60 frames even if minimal graphics improvements were the result.
With Batman Arkham Knight, I could feel the seriousness of the game. With this new game, I can feel the seriousness of the problems in the gaming industry.
3:38 the Loba voice line from Apex?
The funny thing is it probably also doesn’t take much hardware to max out the graphics of the older games, and it has become more apparent that older games have superior graphics to optimisation ratios then today’s games. To design and create is one talent, to optimise is another.
Modern game devs have no talents, they are bugs
Modern corporate games are made in the same way as modern corporate websites. Multiple devs cobbling together packages without really understanding what they do or how they will perform.
I mean it's great that you can go no-code in unreal (for instance) and make a game but all that abstraction comes at a price and the low bar to entry means that it's likely you won't know what that price will be.
crazy and now you cant play games unless you spend thousands of dollars/euros and games look like THAT should be illegal.
The new game will be laggy asf on max while Batman is butter smooth while looking better
thats technically not true arkham knight did have a terrible pc port. but i see what u mean
The water in suicide squad looks like Jello when you wobble it.
I get it's different dev teams, but how does a game that's practically a decade older look THAT much better? (Honestly, the graphics are still stunning by today's standards)
