Swinub's always been a favourite, but I was never big on Piloswine. Mamoswine has helped the entire line rocket to one of my all-time favourites, and I'm glad to see that piggy boy getting some appreciation.
On one hand, I kinda wish Mamoswine was closer to an actual mammoth, but on the other hand it could fall under the "it's barely a Pokémon, it just looks like a cartoon animal!" category if it was. The swine elements are keeping it connected to its evolution like and the ski glasses section around its eyes give it more personality without making it overdesigned or too goofy looking. It's definitely one of my favorite cross gen evolutions as well.
Ice-ground isn't just a good offensive typing- it hits OVER HALF of existing pokemon for SE damage, as well as only being resisted by water-bug and ice-bug, two rare typings that are rarely seen.
Mamoswine gets Freeze-Dry too which is pretty funny to throw against some physically bulky water types as Mamoswine's Special Attack is servicable (mainly good for Quagsire and Rotom-W)
Freeze dry Mamo in gen 6 is such a fun off meta way to catch so many checks. Besides that, Mamo has been a refined prediction players best friend. If you click the correct button, something is getting ruined if not outright KO’d. Perfectly designed
I remember as a kid trying to evolve piloswine in gen 3. That boy was level 70 something before I gave up. I didn't have Internet so I couldn't look it up. I just saw Mamoswine in the anime haha
think this video is really underselling mamoswine in gens 6-8, even after 5, Mamo was still a frequent threat in OU despite being a UU mon because of its unique typing, ice/ground is an amazing combination that covers both electrics and opposing ground types, and the power creeping of electric and ground types over the generations made Mamo even better for this unique role, especially in gen 8 which had the strongest collection of electrics types ever in OU, mamo could handle all of them as well as cover the common ground/grass/electric types that were used to parry the electric damage as well. Mamo was also one of the few switch ins to arctozolt and could survive its Low Kick coverage with bulk investment and KO back with EQ, Stealth Rock Focus Sash and Bulky Toxic Lefties Mamo were seen in tournaments making use if its unique offense and defensive tools on the right teams, definitely an amazing pokemon thats still completely unique and would create new team options if it were in gen 9 right now, one of my favorite competitive pokemon of all time that people still continue to innovate with throughout the generations
Just being able to fuck up every bulky mon in OU that’s not water type was huge in Gen 8. Pex - EQ, Torn-T - Crash, Corvi - with rocks up you only need to get two flinches, Ferro - two crash flinches into EQ, Blissey - no phys def to begin with
Always love seeing new jimothycool analyses. Your videos really stand out in all the right ways, and I always learn something. Lots of respect for your work!
Mamoswine's one of the highlights of Gen 4's new evolutions. It massively improves Piloswine, making Pryce much more threatening in his rematch team, while also being truly viable to use against Lance. Piloswine wasn't fast, so the chances of you getting off a Blizzard or Icy Wind before you got nuked was pretty slim. But Mamoswine, armed with Ice Shard and Ice Fang, was a game changer.
Glad to see a video centered on my favorite Pokemon of all time. Honestly, I liked Mamoswine in Gen 4, but playing Gen 5 OU was where I really came to love it
they were seriously allergic to making crabominable not low tier and niche as hell "you know how both ice shard and mach punch would make total sense on this thing? well too bad it gets neither. its just an outclassed trick room attacker and nothing else. fuck you."
That's why Mamoswine is still the one of best Ice-Type Pokémons in Smogon with Weavile. He deserved to show one of terribles defensive type. Pokémon SV could be interesting to see how he's going to be. Snowing climat have change as well, doing it tougher, but you must have a friend to activate the snow (Slowking and his Chilly Reception is his best friend so far). Overall, he's in my Top 10 favorite Pokemon in Gen 4 due to his strength.
I think ice electric is actually still better, but I could be wrong. They cover each other's resistances so well, and so much is weak to one or the other. There's a reason regileki was broken with tera ice instead of tera ground.
I have this beautiful final gym leader or elite four member idea, where they’re always vague what type they use, and 5 of them are all of the water/ground pokemon, then they just send out mamoswine and completely make you regret thinking grass types were a good idea to bring
Since draft leagues are getting a resurgence, I'm here to advocate for Mamoswine in this format. It might've fallen in smogon singles, but it kept being outstanding in draft. The lower power level and the variety the format provides makes Mamo really useful for his offensive capabilities and utility. Not only that, but Piloswine is also amazing, it still can hit hard and the extra bulk from eviolite is pretty useful.
Mamoswine actually got further buffed in vgc recently due to how oblivious blocks intimidate. This might actually give mamo more ou viability in gen 9 considering how crazy the lead meta has become with Glimora, Garchomp, Landorus, hell even lead specs dragapult is a lead nowadays, mamo can beat these mons and even stop taunt attempts due to oblivious blocking taunt
Mamoswine was my favorite Mon in the gen 4 anime and when I learned competitive in gen 6 ou whenever I considered my ground type id often choose it over lando and it gave me good results still

Baxcalibur is another example of an offensive Ice-type with notable defensive utility due to Thermal Exchange letting it uniquely punish things like WashTom and Moltres, or maybe even consider Ice Body to combo with Galarian Slowking's Chilly Reception to greatly ease setup. It's a bit of a shame that this neat defensive utility becomes rather overshadowed by Baxcalibur's sheer offensive might that is comparable with similar offensively broken Ice-types like GDarm and Chien-Pao
Bax to me is an example of a mon that was made with a single goal in mind. Most pseudos can be run as mixed attackers or even defensively/for utility, but Bax is designed to just click strong physical moves and nothing else, just like Chien and Gdarm. Ice Body+Sub is a newer but fairly common set now but basically does the same thing. Personally, I wish it offered more as a Pseudo but at least it does its one job well. If they lowered its speed and increased its bulk or gave it reliable recovery, it would just become another defensive Ice type to complain about.

I was playing Sacred Gold (a Heart Gold challenge hack) and went up against Lance. He left my poor Mamoswine alone in a 4v1 that quickly turned back into my favor because of its Choice Banded Ice Shard sweeping Lance's powerful Dragons. That's what made me love Mamoswine, and he's going to be a monster in the new Snow mechanics.
Just in time as I caught a Former Alpha Mamoswine that's ready to go to Paldea when The Teal Mask drops, but I'm tired and don't wanna put the Distant Past Ribbons on them for now.
Mamoswine is a great example of what I wish more ice types were. Unfortunately, with the way that ice types match up defensively, it is very difficult to design a Pokemon that works this way, with perhaps Baxcalibur being one of the few others over the years. I think if they redid how ice types work on the defensive side, perhaps giving them one or two more valuable resistances, we'd be able to see a wider variety of viable ice types. Perhaps a resistance to one of Fairy, Dragon, or Electric could help. A resistance to Electric specifically would even make Ice types one of the few checks to boltbeam users, which could be interesting.
Mamoswine and Magnezone are like the ideal examples of how a good evolution can help otherwise underwhelming mons 2 stage mons. Where's my parasect fix now?

I’m surprised We haven’t had an extremely OP ice type Champion with Mamoswine as the signature pokemon. Assault vest plus Snow makes it even more powerful than previous gens.
I was a big fan of Arctozolt in generation 8 - insane breaking power, but balanced by the prediction-reliance of its STABs and the time limit on hail turns, and outside of hail, it's pretty helpless. It having to survive on the strength of boltbeam coverage over its own inherent strength has always been cool to me.
