Excellent discussion and all great points. I also got hit with one of those bait-and-switch listings. They do that because we are used to getting a what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience on Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's, etc. The lesson is to support local manufacturers and resellers with proven records of quality merchandise and customer service. As the saying goes, it's better to buy once and cry once than to have to re-buy something because the first one was garbage.
Love this Ted, 100% agree. It is so true that we are what you see is what you get country. Honestly buying from these websites reminds me a lot of how we had to be when the interenet first started out. I would always be a little hesitant to purchase anything from websites, especially if they were new, etc. Thanks again for commenting and watching!
Very informative video Bryan! Thanks !
Thanks so much for watching Mike!
Great video. Thanks!
Thanks for watching woodchip! Have a great weekend!
Great content on this channel. Thank you Bryan!
Thanks so much Skippylippy! I appreciate it, and thanks for watching!
I would never buy from these or any other Chinese websites. Maybe if we talked more about these things, we'd have better control over our American companies. I do enjoy your channel, and I love your t-shirts!!! Timothy
Haha! Thanks so much Timothy! I appreciate you watching!
You always leave me smiling, Flynndog. Thank you.
I feel like there should be a "that's what she said" somewhere in there! :). Thanks for watching!
Thanks for a good, well thought-out review. (By the way, Bry, you look GREAT when you've shaved!) 🙂
Thanks so much Scotty! I've never too much cared for shaving, and my job over the last 10 years, hasn't really required it. But I agree, I look like more of a bum with some beard scraggle!
Great video as always Bryan I think I’ll just avoid these websites all together
Thanks so much Jim, I'm kind of in the same boat. I don't think I'll be using them anymore unless for this channel or something.
Excellent discussion on some of the issues involved when buying on the internet (and specifically, directly from China). There are many sellers (not nearly as many suppliers) of woodworking tools and consumables on the web. For me, the biggest differentiators is the speed and cost of shipping and the veracity of the product’s description and capabilities. The speed being normally less important than “getting what you think you paid for”. There are actually some high quality tools coming from foreign sources, but not all of them are. Word of mouth and recommendations from other woodworkers can be a huge benefit, which I think is one reason the review videos are so popular. Obviously, sometimes content creators are biased because they are sponsored by the tool manufacturers, and a prudent person would seek multiple sources and read reviews on the specific products. A good example, in my opinion, are fasteners. You can buy fasteners at your local hardware stores, the big box stores, specialty internet fastener stores, Amazon, etc. The differences can be ridiculous. Tolerances and quality are extreme. Prices (per unit)vary wildly primarily driven by quantity, and don’t always make sense. I have seen boxes of fasteners at big box stores, where the largest quantity was a greater cost per unit than the mid-sized quantities. I used to just always buy the largest, until I begin doing the math on each of the sizes. All that being said, it is still up to you as a buyer to do the math, or in other words “buyer beware“.
Thank you so much for sharing and watching Michael. I really like your analogy with the fasteners, makes total sense and is a great example of the wide variety of quality, etc. you can get online. Thank you so much for sharing this and thanks for watching!
Truth Mr. Flynndog, and only adding the filling of our landfills with most of the useless toxic $2 crap and packaging they ship over here that people just chuck! Looking forward to your shop's open house coming soon! Please keep those update shorts rolling! Is your wife getting nervous you maybe taking up permanent residence in her garage yet, or tools starting to take up more space there?
It is so funny you say that. I keep telling my wife, I'm building a bedroom out there. They would probably like that more than me! :)
I think that MINI in the product description would have tipped me off that it wasn’t going to be full size. You are correct about reading the adds. They all put up the best pictures to grab your attention, draw you in.
Oh I hear you, I guess I assumed it would be small, but not that small! :) Thanks for watching Jeff, I agree with you on the pictures!
I just haven't bought from any of these, but my old boss bought a sink faucet from Wish, saved a bit of money, however the faucet only lasted a couple months before he went to a local box store and I was replacing the one from Wish. I told him it was a waste of time when I installed the Wish faucet, but he was "saving money."
So even though I don't have a boat load of disposable income I will spend more for items I know are of a certain level of quality. But thanks for today's video, and let us see an update on the barn soon please. Hope you aren't still waiting on the sheet rockers. Have a great weekend.
Great story Pat, and i think your story pretty much sums it up. Barn hasn't had much movement in the last week. They drywallers finished up, but the main contractor was on a different job last week. He's back this week and not leaving until it's finished, so fingers crossed!
The Sheet Rockers - What a great name for a band!
Flynndogg… long-time listener, first-time caller! Would you ever review any products from a luthier supply company like Stewmac? A series making a custom guitar with inlays would be really cool. I’m not sure if you are musical at all, but you seem like a talented enough guy that you could probably learn to play a chord or two if you needed to.
I love this idea, I'm going to research that. I'm an avid guitar collector and played in bands throughout college! Funny you should bring this up! I'm definitely going to check this out. Thank you so much for sharing joshua!
I agree that the websites can be misleading, and you need to be very careful that you know what you are actually ordering.
However, from what I gather (mainly from watching other review videos) is that these sites sell products from various manufacturers, and therefore the quality can vary according to the manufacturer. There are a few Chinese manufacturers whose products have been reviewed quite favourably, with Hongdui and WNew being among those. The sharpening guide that you have received half of (it's actually sold in two parts) is also reportedly very good (I bought one, and it seems fine, although I've yet to really use it).
Some products don't really need a manual, and some non-Chinese products come with poor manuals. Ryobi has a bit of a reputation for manuals comprising mainly hard-to-understand pictures. So I'm not sure that lack of manuals is necessarily a big drawback. (I recall Hooked On Wood, which has done a lot of reviews of Chinese products, mentioning some products coming with manuals.)
Excellent points PJRayment, thanks for sharing and watching!
Great points!
Love the lottery numbers bit from Future Bryan!
Haha! Thanks so much Damon! I appreciate you watchign! :)
Total LOL. I love all your editing and extra clips.
I will only buy QUALITY. In the end, it saves over and over again.
That's a great way to do it! Thanks for watching meleader!
You should have started out the video with 'a public service announcement' statement. Very important information for the American public to understand. Love our flag flying on your property, Flynndog. Thank you, again.
Thanks so much Gazman! I love our flag. Looks even better at night with the spotlight on it! :). Thanks so much for watching! :)

Love this William! Thank you so much for sharing this quote!
Don’t forget diamond stones have a break in period. Nice to work some edges that are behind because it’ll cut faster until the fractured stuff that isn’t bonded breaks off. It’s normal. Those you tried are probably just bad like you said but the feeling of it cutting will charge after the surface has been worked on enough.
Wish features many big American brand names. The Benchmade knives they sell piss me off because they’re so far off. Missing bevels, do not feel smooth, edges and metals bad. Durable plastic-like like G10 are cheap plastic.
Thank you so much for sharing this information Fearsomewarrior. I totally agree. I have a set of nice diamond stones and they were really ragged when I first got them, now they are nice and smooth and work great for sharpening. Thanks so much for watching!
As for cheap tools, it depends on what you want to use it for.
I bought a pair of long nose pliers from the dollar store because I use them for nothing but holding wires while I solder them. For that purpose I don't need $20 pliers. I'm not using hardly any force on them and it doesn't matter if the jaws don't close tight or line up.
I completely agree with you there! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have heard of seversl people getting their bank account hacked and the common thread was temu
Buyer beware
That’s scary, Thanks for sharing Sefliming44
I found a lot of blades with a 10mm arbor from several reputable brands. But I don't think it's safe to use a toothed blade with that arbor, it really needs a surrounding shield. The volume of emails is definitely annoying. Temu tries to offer a big discount in exchange for giving them a phone number. I've never given my number but I would expect a lot of text spam.
Thanks so much for sharing Jeff. Good to know that you can find the 10mm arbor. The blade also has some indentions on it as well, that the nut actually grips onto as well. But either way, I would tend to agree with you, it's a little unsafe! Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it!
I have never ordered direct from China and do not expect too ever do so.
If I want cheap Chinese tools, I go to Harbor Freight, at least I get to see what I am buying.
Great suggestion Chashint1!
Talking about getting emails 3 times a day. I just had to unsub another woodworking channel for spamming on TH-cam every time something goes on sale.
Oh boy, that is so annoying. I get it. I'm still getting multiple emails from those websites even after unsubscribing. :(
something to be said for spending a few extra $$ to get American products.
I agree Ken! Hope you are doing well!
Well american-made you can send it back get back faster even though a lot of our products in the US are made in China
That's s a great point Frank! Thanks for watching!
Bryan I usually come here for a laugh or three, this video should be a required disclaimer for all these trash sites. Pay now or pay a lot more later. That's as political as I'll get.
Haha! I tend to agree with you. I don't think these websites, give a whole lot of thought to what they are selling. Thanks for watching Craig!
I’ve placed five orders with Temu to date. All arrived with all ordered items. All arrived well within the promised shipping dates. All arrived undamaged.
Buyers should be aware that many of the similar products offered on Amazon are ALSO from China, and often they are the EXACT SAME product as what is sold on Temu.
Great advice and thanks for sharing johnmack! I like hearing everyone's experiences. Thanks for sharing and watching!
Dogg, man, you've become a consumer advocate. Now who "inferred" did they or did you? Well, done, brother. No real surprises, were there? Go American...not third world.
You're exactly right Mr. Meat. NO surprises at all!
@@FlynndoggWoodwork Dogg, mann, sorry I was out of commission yesterday, but I've bounced back. The meatballs here in the studio are missing you. Keep it up!
@@themeat5053 Haha! I hope your recovery is going well, and your are healing quickly!
