I was around 7 at the time so I had no cellphone nor did I have keys, so I was locked outside my own house crying and crying for about 2 hours before my aunt realized what she did and came back and got me... It was a horrible experience, I was still extremely afraid of the dark at the time, and every single sound of movement I heard made me want to shit myself.... it was also very cold and I only had on shorts and a t-shirt... it was a very very bad day for me.

My parents didn't buy me a new flip phone, they had a box full of all their old flip phones and every couple years they would give me a "newer" version if I was good. So yeah, thats cool. I cant do that to my kid/kids, give them a fucking Samsung note 10. A phone roughly the same size as a Kindle, it won't have the same effect. Although, I could go find that box of flip phones.
