I think I realized that the fact that this is all made up doesn’t matter, because I keep coming back to this and every single time I enjoy it immensely
If you haven’t already, there’s a comedian named Doug Stanhope that’s also a great storyteller. Look up "Doug Stanhope This is Not Happening” for a good laugh
Think about this: you just watched a puppet tell a story for 20 minutes, and felt thoroughly intrigued and engaged. An ample display of the power of storytelling.
The way Randy connects very loose topics with an overarching main topic and then it spirals out of control is definitely very ADHD, and very impressive that despite how frequently he changes topics you can still follow what he’s talking about without questioning it or getting lost, especially for neurotypicals.
@@beardedemperor I mean, Randy just said morgan doesn't exist, so... i don't see how a person that doesn't exist in a made up story could have done anything wrong.

You should watch the whole set (Randy Writes a Novel), it should be still up here on TH-cam. It's also amazing and this bit has a lot of throwbacks to the earlier bits.
@@Double-R-Nothing it's not so bad depending on the controls; if you have one of the ones with an ergonomic clamp thingy (kinda like those sticks with the clamps at the end you use to pick up trash on the floor) it's not that bad but yeah if the guy is just using his hand in the head itself than it's gonna hurt.
It is. I used to teach puppeteering classes and attend competitions for years. The year we won first place was with a 15 minute production I did lead for, toward the end I got so weak I had to drop the arm rods just to support my arm and the weight of the puppet. No matter how long you practice or how experienced you are it never prepares you for the pain of the performance, nowadays there are devices to assist with the weight and move the weight to the shoulders/ribs of the actor. I wish those were around when I was involved.
What's even more impressive is that the head/mouth/body is controlled by one hand and both hands by the other at the same time and it's always so well executed!
I saw this live in 2016/2017, and when he dropped the "I made it up" line, the instant response from someone in the audience was a guy's very angry and very frustrated, "Aw, FUCK YOU." And without missing a beat, Randy responded: "Oh shit, Morgan's back."
The thing that makes this story so believable despite it's bizarreness is that it's got the type of details that are so true to real life, especially stuff like the way the dude was writing. You've met or will most definitely meet someone during your lifetime that share at least one of the odder aspects of Morgan. Also helps that it starts out very simple and escalates at a steady pace, and even at it's craziest it doesn't feel downright unrealistic. heck sometimes weird shit happens in real life that we could never even conceive in fiction lmao
@@oz_jones I was actually glad when he said he'd made it up; it meant that a lot of horrible events never happened. Plus I was just plain impressed with the story as well as the storytelling.
You are quite right about how life sometimes is crazier than written fiction. If you ever want a good example of this, go look up the story of the Russian 2nd Pacific Squadron from the Russo-Japanese War. The level of stuff that happened to that squadron of ships...you can't write comedy that good.
This guy is the most skilled comedian I’ve ever seen. Not only does he make a super funny and entertaining story that sounds realistic, but he also tells it better than most comedians would while controlling a huge puppet and giving it realistic motions like a normal human. I don’t know why he isn’t more famous by now
There's at least two people controlling the puppet. You can't control two hands and a mouth at the same time. And to be fair, we don't know for sure that the guy voicing him is one of the ones controlling the puppet in this clip. It's entirely plausible, but not guaranteed.
@@amokriinprolgiid3409 …no it’s literally just one puppeteer. Notice how whenever both of Randy’s hands are moving they’re more or less moving in the same direction or are cupped together. The puppeteer is holding two sticks with his non-dominant hand - this is a technique most of the Henson puppeteers use (including Randy’s performer who has done some work with the Henson company). Also, it’s a bit odd to think this is a pre recorded track or done by a separate performer - there’s a level of movement in the performance that can only be achieved by the person puppeteering and doing the voice at the same time, particularly considering this is a standup act that requires a level of being present that would be next-to-impossible if it’s multiple people doing something. And even then, there’s plenty of videos of Randy performing live (including in the special this is from) of him interacting with/reacting to audience members that can only be achieved by a single puppeteer doing voice and movement.
There's something so freeing about watching a puppet tell a story and letting yourself believe every second of it. I can make excuses like "oh, its just a story from the puppeteer," but that kinda ruins the fun, and even when I think that, I still have agreat time listening to the stroy and watching the physical demeanor of a puppet, I feel like a kid watching an R-rated movie again.
it's because with the puppet Randy can be extremely more expressive than a standup comedian on stage, with his fast, flailing movements and ability to flop on his desk like he does near the beginning of this video. any standup comedian who would attempt to imitate his movements on stage would get CTE by the end of a 1 hour special.
"I'm baffled by how a puppet can be so expressive in its delivery." Analyze the entire thing... All of the movements are, essentially, simple: it's *good timing.* The puppet movements, though simple: synchronized with magistral comedic delivery - sort of a, two-level juggling act.
Randy’s design is deceptively well crafted. The shape of his mouth appears to change based on the angle of his head, and his eyes can look either dazed or panicked just depending on context. Tilted back with mouth wide open looks like smiling, Straight ahead with mouth shut looks apathetic etc. Not to mention the little contraption used to move his arms.
I love how Randy can turn a topic that could be explained in a minute into 20 minutes and still have it be hilarious and fascinating the whole way through.
I’m not a boomer and I can prove that comedy can be just as funny without the cussing. Comedy I can let my children watch. I’m also a disabled soldier that has a doctorate in expletives, sooo....
If you watch the entire set of Randy Writes a Novel, there are a lot of "quick things" before he "will read us the novel." Totally would buy the novel if it was real though.
I often forget that there is an actual person controlling this puppet, and that I'm not watching a puppet move itself as if it was alive. That's how A+ the performance is.
i LAUGHED AT THAT THEN IMMEDIATELY REALIZED THAT I DID, sorry for the caps lol, not even know what the fuck anuy of it meant. Any chance you can elaborate or explain to my dulled american brain how it actually had impact or bearing in the story. Thanks
I'm incredibly impressed by how accurate and "natural" (humanly) he makes the details of Randy's movements. Everything from timing to angles, small complex movements and flow - it's amazing. Especially considering that Randy is not a ventriloquist puppet: He (seemingly) does not have his big manly fist, wrist and big Submariner watch all up to his elbow deep inside Randy. He does not limit Randy's movements to only those of his head and a few rare and rough arm movements (like most ventriloquists and their dolls do) - but he operates Randy's whole visible body. And he can't control Randy only by ring or paddle linkages operated by the fine motor skills of fingers and finger tips. He has to make all these damn-near-perfect movements by much rougher mechanics, and instead of therefore limiting the scope of movements, he gives him a full, natural'ish, very active and granular body language. Including extensive gesticulation. For (most) ventriloquists, they do their act while being a full visual part of it. They can see everything, both the audience, the stage, and have full view of how their control of the puppet "comes out". With Randy however - there's none of that. He can't see what most of Randy's movements looks like, he doesn't have orientation and visual input on what "the audience sees", how the movements come off. So to achieve this level of precision and accuracy without having any of that "visual input" / visual feedback of the result / "output" of his controlling manouver inputs - that gotta require some wild amount of training. I know it's a bit gushy, but man - I don't think most people have any sense of the extensive level of practice and training it takes to hone this skill to this kind of level. It's absolutely amazing.
@@MetFanMac He doesn't actually like to have a screen. I think it was this recording (or maybe Randy Was Sober) where he did actually have a screen and at one point made a note how a woman in the back was fucking hating an entire bit. Oh man... The arm power it must take to do a 20 segment of just talking. That's some impressive puppeteering.
This is only one segment in the show. It goes for well over an hour.
If you practice something, you get good at it. Yeah.
What's even more impressive is that the head/mouth/body is controlled by one hand and both hands by the other at the same time and it's always so well executed!
I saw this live in 2016/2017, and when he dropped the "I made it up" line, the instant response from someone in the audience was a guy's very angry and very frustrated, "Aw, FUCK YOU."

But it isn't though a florist with that kind of house and an Audi?
You are quite right about how life sometimes is crazier than written fiction. If you ever want a good example of this, go look up the story of the Russian 2nd Pacific Squadron from the Russo-Japanese War. The level of stuff that happened to that squadron of ships...you can't write comedy that good.
A story so unbelievable it’s believable
And even then, there’s plenty of videos of Randy performing live (including in the special this is from) of him interacting with/reacting to audience members that can only be achieved by a single puppeteer doing voice and movement.

it's because with the puppet Randy can be extremely more expressive than a standup comedian on stage, with his fast, flailing movements and ability to flop on his desk like he does near the beginning of this video. any standup comedian who would attempt to imitate his movements on stage would get CTE by the end of a 1 hour special.
The best part about this story is that it ties beautifully into his bigger dramatic narrative of that show about how and why stories fascinate us.

Randy’s design is deceptively well crafted. The shape of his mouth appears to change based on the angle of his head, and his eyes can look either dazed or panicked just depending on context.
Tilted back with mouth wide open looks like smiling,
Straight ahead with mouth shut looks apathetic etc.
Not to mention the little contraption used to move his arms.

His puppeteer trained with the Muppets so I would assume he has a rig under the table linked up to a camera, just like they do.
@@MetFanMac He doesn't actually like to have a screen.
