@@kermitfroggie5334 They don't give everything for free. If you hire them, they cost $995 monthly. So, I'm wondering, even before you sell your first copy, you'd be spending thousands of dollars...Some things just make me say hmm...

The first couple were on the money, and then....
1) Royalties: It depends on what kind of publishing you're doing. It makes no sense for a traditional publisher to front the costs for editing, layout, cover design, and printing and then you get 100% of the royalties. Even when you self-publish via POD (such as Lulu or KDP), the publisher charges for the printing.
2) ISBN: Yeah, it's steep price, but the rights don't transfer based on who owns the ISBN. Unless you explicitly sign away the rights, you keep the rights. All a company-owned ISBN means is that you can only publish the book through them; that's it. You can take your book wherever you want, change publishers, whatever; while you'll lose the ISBN, you won't lose your rights.
3) Vanity Press: I knew this was going to get a mention. A vanity press is meant to create books you want to give away, such as at a family reunion or a doctoral thesis. They are not meant for anyone looking to sell their books.for a profit.

I’m from Australia, and last year I was with a self-publishing company where the print cost to order a single copy of my own book from them was $14!!! I’d been with two other publishers and the print cost per book was $5-7, max. Glad to say that I parted ways with them! The red flags took a while to really make themselves known.

@@brinpritchard1927 Hi Brin. I’m trying Amazon’s KDP platform now. They launched paperback in Australia back in May, which was great timing. Print cost is higher than I thought, but still okay at $8.25 each, but that differs from book length and trim size. I could almost write a book on the experiences I’ve had with publishing and publishers. 😓👨🏼💻

Maybe a better thing isn’t to just tell people “to watch out for scams but to tell them not to participate in and perpetuate scams like “catchy descriptions”, and various ways to make your book appear on front page and lists. Another scam many people seem to have no issue with is publishing “low content books”
i'm currently finishing up mines and my 14 year old daughters book, and I am so overwhelm by what I have to do to protect it. I wished I had help..but let me suck it up and do it...dang!!!!!

This topic makes sense because there are a lot of videos from authors boasting with their news about companies offering free ISBN's. I don't blame them because they are trying to educate. However, the word free should scare anyone. Free ISBN's is nothing but a cheap trick from companies.
Unless you're in Canada ... then the FREE ISBN is coming from the government which is nice.

FREE ISBN's also mean that, the company that GIVES YOU those, will be the ONLY ONE YOU will be allowed to sell YOUR book through.

Hi, I published my book on Amazon using their ISBN. That was 2 years ago, I have done no marketing and recently removed it from Amazon. I have auto-audited again and added images (100 coloured) I sent the manuscript to Austin Macauley London and they have offered me a Contributory Contract. I a worried the Amazon ISBN situation may stop AM from publishing my work

Dorrance... Publishers. I did some basic research into them when they offered to publish me following my copyright filing. Yeah... so... they're sort of like, "Literary Mercenaries."

How are you defining "royalties"? I'm confused about how anybody could get 100% of the royalties-if that means all proceeds from the book's sales. The company bringing the book to market has to get money also. So, does your use of the word royalties mean some subset of all proceeds? I love your videos. I'm learning a lot.

Thanks for the valuable info in all your vids. I am aspiring author/designer and recently finished my first book. Just about to make an installment with Xlibris when I found you in my research. Not sure I can thank you enough. Lol! Looks like what I want to do with mine, but it's a full 230 page or so fiction novel. It's anime style but not a children's book so I don't know how to approach formatting it. I think it could use some illustrations (not many), but a black and white and color novel? Can that even work? I did my own cover, so this particular vid was super informative as far as the sizing and spacing. I appreciate the help. I'm just going about getting it formatted for KDP/Createspace. Trying to decide b&w or color.

Thanks so much for your help. Currently I'm publishing through LULU. They are pretty reasonable but if not for your advice on the ISBN number I would have been in a situation that I would regret in the future. Also how many books have you published? I think it's good advice also to purchase the package deal through Bowker...Boh-ker, Bow-ker?

Hi Ricky - you don't need to pay for an ISBN + bar code. Your book cover designers will do the bar code so you don't need to pay for it.

Uhhm just wanna ask how if you know any way to get paid in kdp if amazon doesn't support the banking from my country? This message always shows up : ( "We currently don't support electronic payments to this country. Please select "I don’t have a bank" to complete setting up your payment method." Previously, when they did not support Canadian banks, I received checks from them ... is that not an option for you in your country?
Since the books I write are short, Amazon doesn't charge me very much for author's copies.
Can you print on demand from several companies simultaneusly?
I thought authors were sent complimentary copies.

I don't know - I haven't done any work in that area. I would research it carefully before entering but to me, there should always be a choice as to whether you sign the contract or not.

Hello! I had a quick question regarding the ISBN. So, I published a book a few months ago through Page Publishing and they assigned me an ISBN. Because of this, does this mean that if I wanted to publish a sequel or any other material related to the first novel, I would have to go through them again? Or could I find another company/get an agent to contact another publisher? This whole process is still very new and quite scary to me, so when I did things through Page Publishing I was sort of letting them hold my hand through the process.
You can go ahead and buy your own ISBN for the sequel. You don't have to go through them again.

When you order an ISBN number, do you have to have your book to send them electronically? How do they attach the number to the book?
Hi Pam - you can order a pack of 100 from bowker so you don't need to know anything except your publishing company name / your name when you order.

What do you know if in the contract it doesn't state all of where the royalty is going, it tells you a portion goes to Amazon and a small portion to them and you get the rest but you find out later there are hidden fees not listed in the contract? What do you do, should you seek legal advice regarding this or just count it up as a loss?
Hi Barbara - honestly, I am not sure. I think you'd have to speak to an attorney to see if you have a case and you have to decide if the issue is big / important enough for you to put the energy into it. I hope you find a good resolution.

There are plenty of "hybrid publishers", offsprings of big names, which are highly unserious. I got an offer where i would have to pay a 5 figures upfront, without getting anything in turn. Not even distribution via the parent publisher. I surely said No.

I have a question. I am a little confused. I was going to purchase an ISBN (10 pack for $250) from Bowker. However, they stated that their ISBNs are seven digits. Aren't ISBNs 13 digits? I tried to call them, but no one answered.

You need to be a Canadian resident.

With our company you pay us a fee to do the work and then you keep all royalties and rights.
Authors have no choice but to assign the copyright of a book to a publisher including film rights if the book Is to be published with 10 per cent royalty.

NON-SENSE! Author's DO HAVE a choice. If you get it 'copy-written,' than YOU get to make ALL THE DECISIONS. INCLUDING film rights.
@@billyrichards8834 Self-published books are not recognised in academic circles so people should stay away from them. Would-be publishers do retain the copyright of the book if it is to be published and the majority of book proposals are rejected. It is not a win-win situation for any author.

Amazon stated that you don't need an ISBN for publishing an ebook. Is that true ?
KDP will assign you an ISBN for use on your Kindle. It's not actually an ISBN it's an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number), which is just for for the Kindle Book. If you only ever plan on publishing your book on Amazon and Kindle then you can use that. If you want wider distribution than Kindle you'll have to look into the requirements of each platform. Generally I do recommend you get your own ISBN number because it's YOURS and you control it and are the publisher on record. But, I do know it's a big expense if you are in the US.

If you publish with an Amazon ISDN can you switch to your own?
It's complicated to do so - but I believe you can if you start a new listing.
You MUST contract through 'Amazon' EXCLUSIVELY, for at least 90-day's, after that, MOVE ON!
So I contacted this company that said the only thing they get is 5% of every book sold I write the book and they do everything else. Is this good?
I don't know. It really depends on all the other terms of the agreement (who owns the rights to the material, what you pay upfront, how you can order print books if you need them, and where you get distribution). And, most importantly, what your goals are and whether this option is a good fit for your goals.

Hi Vance - I don't have personal experience with them. I do see a few red flags on their website that make me uncomfortable but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good company to work with. I'm having trouble attaching a link right now but search "allis self publishing service director" - they have gone through many of the companies and offer insights ... they give Dorrance a 'Caution' rating.

I believe that pricing was CreateSpace ... this video is a couple of years old now.
This is not really helpful because publishers can just lie to you like Newman Springs did to me. Finding a good, honest publisher is just too hard and I am just going to throw my manuscripts into the garbage. Even if I were to find a publisher, they are just going to prostitute my creation while I get paid nothing.
