  • Many books - even good books won't sell. There are no guarantees when it comes to selling non-fiction books but in this video Julie Broad, founder of Book Launchers, explains the most common 5 reasons non-fiction books don't sell. Things, like not having a large audience or not hitting a really hot topic, can dramatically impact your initial launch sales. Over time though there are some steps that can help you grow that audience and build your book sales.

    If self publishing, join a writer's club that critiques. Listen when other writer's are being critiqued and apply lessons to your own writing. Then have your own writing critiqued. It can be extremely helpful to see where your readers are losing interest or not following your train of thought.

    Excellent points! I love that you shared yellow is your least favorite color, yet that is the color of your book jacket. Perfect example of how you are marketing to the reader vs. yourself.

I see authors make a new non-fiction update, changing the cover, blurbs on the back cover, etc. as this brings new extended life to an already published book.

    I KNEW target audience was gonna be on the list. As soon as I saw the title of this video, I said to myself, “one of the reasons is going to relate to audience.” 😜 The others are amazing tips, too!
    Taking all of this info, my question would be: What would a first-time author do? What if they haven’t built their following yet, because that’s what their book is for? Not sure if you’ve done a video on tips for first-time authors yet. Just popped into my head. 😊

    You have presented the realities of what make or break book sales. I will like to add one: I read somewhere that poor content will in the long run kill book sales, and I think I've seen that happen with a very popular female writer who published a children's book that was criticized for it's bad writing, but was initially selling strong because of the Author's popularity. But now, compared to the Sales of her previous nonfiction book, her children's book has been classified as disappointing. So, I think book content should also be considered.

    So-#1-it’s official then. Getting a book published is for *extroverts only.* But life’s real, full-time thinkers are the introverts; if readers want well-resolved (NON-fiction) they need writers who spent their time thinking and not “doing the dancing bear.” Di - lem’ - ma!
    Introversion cannot be “un-learned.” Like hight, blue eyes, flat feet, or congenital blindness, it’s innate. Much like society not so long ago simply ignored the needs of people in wheelchairs, what we are really dealing with here (and every bit as shameful) is an industry that simply can’t be bothered catering for introverted writers. Basically, it ignores its thinkers-and it shows. (A lot.)
    The problem lay in designing systems that enable introverts to sell like extroverts and remain introverts. Introverts need-we demand-our due outlet.
    When (1875 wasn’t all that long ago), in an age of classicism, literary agencies first appeared, their entire modus operandi was *to let the writer write and we’ll do the rest.* THEY did the publicity, the marketing and selling, etc.-and for which services they took their slice. Somewhere between then and now, however, all of that non-writing slog snuck right back onto the writer’s front porch-and guess what: the agents still took the same fees. (Odd, that.)
    Benjamin Franklin said, “If you can make it, Someone will buy it.” Was he wrong?
    So here’s the thing. Are there any agents out there who are prepared to do what literary agents did, originally? If even for a much larger percentage, I don’t think so-and I really can’t figure out why. Talk about a gap in the market! If I could find an agent willing to work along with my rather severe introversion I would be prepared to offer him or her perhaps thirty percent on my first-and maybe even my second book (I have five, gathering dust. I have things that need saying.) Even at that, l don’t expect any takers.

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For simplicity I do make generalizations yes, but if you are writing a history book would there still not be a promise to the reader when they are done reading? How do you market the book if you're not still looking at the category you're in, the audience, how your book is different, and what the promise is when someone is done reading the book? Why would someone read your history book over another on the same subject? Those are fundamental principles to marketing books regardless of category of non-fiction.

    So. Non-fiction books are more popular than fiction? Strange-but true! And yet, whereas whole herds of fiction beta readers are jumping out of the screen at you to get you to send them your unpublished book, finding a non-fiction beta reader is like mining for hen’s teeth. (And no; the “I’ll read anything!” beta reader is not what the doctor ordered. If you’re a beta reader, you too need to specify.)
    Go figure!
