    Wow! I hate to repeat myself, but I wish I'd found Book Launchers a year ago when I finished my book and started formatting it for self-publishing. I stopped counting the mistakes I made on my first book when I needed both hands. I'm now an avid fan and won't repeat these mistakes. Thanks Julie, I'll be watching all your videos this week.

    Lovely video. The point that sticks out to me is when she said "dotted line". She's absolutely right. There is a such thing as reading the fine print. If the line looks dotted you might need a magnifying glass to see what you're signing on. Is it really a line?

    Great list Julie. The "not telling people about the book" is an interesting one. I found I had to force myself to tell people as imposter syndrome made me want to go quiet.

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh such a common monster - imposter syndrome! It can be hard but I also find when you remember that you wrote a book for a reader to enjoy or benefit from then you are doing them a disservice to not let them know the book exists!

    Sometimes life gets in the way. I had rushed to release my fiction novel. Guilty. Then I pulled back, slowed down, corrected things that were wrong and THEN planned a build up pre -release. I needed to get this book out and going, and I planned for the long haul anyway, not a huge launching success. Then I was dealing with an elderly dog I knew I was losing soon, and did. That hi-jacked everything and I just threw the book on Amazon, bought some to personally sell. My heart was no longer in the build up. I should have waited, but I had already started to tell people. I still plan to have some book signings and promote , promote , promote. Selling personally, as that is the higher profit margin. I have a website. With the millions of books on Amazon, I know my chances of this book being discovered is slim, I hope for marginal success. And I did the cover, I am an artist as well. Feel free to critique it, it fits my novel to a tee, I love it. " Horsehide" by Tracey Williamson on Amazon. I learned a ton from writing this first novel, and I wont be making these mistakes again, but doing the covers is something I still plan to do for myself. Just subscribed...I have more to learn, thank you.

      @@BarnFlowers Hi! You're very welcome. You'll see above how bad my trilogy did 1 1/2 yrs ago ha! I am only amateur. I like ProWritingAid, but that's just me. You are a talented storyteller and I like how you use the senses with smell etc. and such vivid settings. You also have a very popular genre with sixth sense and horses and missing children, that all creates a great story. You are also a very talented visual artist as you create such a unique abstraction of horses on you cover! I'm glad I helped, for what I'm worth. I have a lot to learn.

      @@BarnFlowers Hi Tracey! You are a patient and kind Zen Master! I feel bad as my feedback about your "Look Inside" at Amazon would be better at a writer's group website and not where many can read it who might buy your novel. I go on and on and who am I? I just thought in terms of the video title and thought maybe you wanted feedback but really you didn't and my feedback for what it was worth wasn't going to boost your sales. It kept nagging me and I should have returned here to delete it long ago. I only hope you sell a million copies! It's hard to put your soul out there and you need all the encouragement you can. Also I don't think readers are that fussy. They can get into your story and cruise along with it. Sorry about doing the feedback here plus I'm not even a published author etc and probably gave poor insight. I was trying to "help" but the second thoughts kept nagging me. Thanks for sharing your talent with the world!

    What if you don't know many people? I posted my series of 3 fiction ebooks 1 1/2 yrs ago on Kindle Unlimited. I told 3 people, and they bought it, only I kind of felt maybe it wasn't a book series for them. None of them bought any of the other 2 books, nor did they send any comments to me (I never asked them to comment as It's their free will.). I created my own covers, however, now I feel more objective and admit they were bad covers. I also only posted on 4 avid reader sites on FaceBook. They are very popular sites where even by the minute other indie authors are posting their books so yours ends up way down the list in a short time. I lost confidence and didn't advertise also due to low budget. Also your books are free to Kindle Unlimited members and none did the "Look Inside", and none dowloaded a free copy. Ninety days later I pulled all three books from "Live" on Amazon. Now I dug deep into my savings and paid for pro designed covers, worked on a rewrite using pro writing software, ProWritingAid. (I also had hired 3 different freelance editors over a several year period.) I'm having my series pro-formatted by a very talented formatter, which will take a while. Again the problem is I don't know anybody, kind of a theme in my life. What would you do in my case?

    I'm an artist, but I won't make my own cover because I know there are many better out there. You say that do it yourself book covers don't work but one of my biggest pet peeves with all the non-fiction self-help books out there is that the majority of them showcase the author on the book cover. Why?! Why is that professional?! I get it if it's a biography, but I never understood it if the book is offering specific help for the reader. So, I'm not convinced that any "professional" book cover is any better than coming up with your own book cover, especially if you've done enough research to have a book cover that offers insight into what the book is actually about. I'm NOT a pro and I'm still working on my first book but it's just my thoughts.

    So, if you are a professional artist you cannot design a good cover?

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cannot is not the word I would use but it's quite possible it won't be an effective marketing tool for your book if you do. A professional artist can create stunning imagery that can be used on the cover but the actual cover design is likely better for a pro. We've redone A LOT of covers done by professional artists or graphics designers that haven't done book covers before because they weren't going to stand out in a category and lacked some of the essential elements of a great cover. The thing is - a cover is really packaging and it's a marketing tool more than a piece of art or a beautiful graphic.
