      I’m sure they can, but you can fake it really easily by following the metronome and just ignoring what Mike’s doing.
      And to be fair, that’s kind of the point of this section, the band provides the backing and the drums solo

  • @wasili411
    @wasili411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    I can understand someone think Mangini's playing is crap . They just can not understand what he was playing. Every drummer is playing rudiments, Portnoy's playing is much simpler. If you haven't achieve the level that Mangini's playing, maybe you can't understand his groove. I compared this part with what Portnoy played and Mangini played at Boston Opera. Playing at London is a big step forward and new taste. In Boston Opera, Mangini is trying to get close with Portnoy's feel but this time he didn't. Then, if you listen back to what Portnoy played before, I feel very boring. Portnoy's playing is very musical but sometimes he doesn't have enough good idea. Mangini's play is too variable. It's very difficult to guess what he will do. DT choose Mangini is very correct, they want more possibilities to move forward.

    • @seanhartel5362

      I think you have it backwards, mate. Mangini is a great technical drummer. But the problem is, he’s not performing a clinic, he’s playing a piece of music. I don’t care how advanced his skill level is, or what types of polyrhythms he’s playing over the 4/4 outro. It doesn’t sound good. That’s the difference between knowledge and wisdom.

This section of song is made for drum solos, not everything is supposed to be in time. I really dig this, not everything should be flowing or in time, because the arrangement of the song allows it. @Zzzlol94 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is the primary reason why Mangini isn’t as good for DT as Portnoy was. On a technical level, MM is just on a another level. He can do these insanely complicated polyrhythms and fast chops. Just one problem, as much as he’s trying to innovate at every turn, his drumming loses the touch with the music and ends up not fitting or being distracting quite often. MP is very satisfying to listen to in addition to being very technical from time to time, MM is extremely technical but only being satisfying to listen to here and there.
      MP created drum tracks that sounded really, REALLY damn cool, which you could also be able to play, with a handful of exceptions. Which is a major reason I got even more interested in getting better at drums.
      Not to complain about MM all the time, D/T is a massive improvement from the 3 previous albums, and the upcoming one should be even better.

    It's incredibly impressive and his technic is awesome. But I think most people dislike this solo because the original Portnoy's solo was in our memory and I think it was more accurate to the song. This drum solo was not supposed to be a technical demonstration but a sensitive ending to a great story and it's not the time for those kind of polyrythm insanity.
    I love Mangini and I'm glad he replaced Portnoy but that particular moment deserved to be more respected. When Mangini first came in DT, he said the fans were expecting to hear some drum parts exactly like Portnoy played them and he wasn't free to do whatever he wants. He should have stick to that for this ending AMHA.

And if Ruddess and Peteucci can’t even grasp a polyrhythm, then perhaps you’ve gone too far as a drummer and shouldn’t be playing something like that. A perfect drummer is defined not only by knowledge of theory and the ability to control his limbs, but above all by the ability to apply all this in the context of music. This example shows Mangini's inability to feel the musical context. In fact, he is completely disconnected from what the rest of the band is playing, for the sake of showing off. This is exactly why he is a much worse drummer than Mike Portnoy.
