Awesome video. I might add that it's important to remember that for most people diversity = looks different.
There is more similarity on a biological level between a person and a parasitic worm than the worm and bacteria (even though they both might be microscopic and similar in shape). The complexity of building blocks required to keep a large organism alive is pretty unbelievable... to the point that it might makes sense to have taken 2-3 billion years (search "Drew Berry: Animations of unseeable biology").
That doesn't at all detract from the awesomeness and importance of the Cambrian Explosion mind you... just saying the "unseen biology" is often more complex, diverse and incredible than the things we see that are made of it.

It's interesting how some stick to the eat or be eaten and become smarter at eating stuff versus getting smarter at not being eaten when the first thing that occurred to me was maybe it was more calcium in the oceans from rock erosion as the world started to get some wiggle in it's wobble or some chemical reaction thus allowing soft bodied creatures to grow shells and then some other creatures developed ways to open up shells. It's a fundamentally different approach to evolution imo with the old survival of the fittest merely a reflection of the general mentality of the people who developed those theories back in the days of manifest destiny etc. How unexciting to think that evolution was more like the three little pigs story of simple creatures trying out different building materials for their homes and opportunistic creatures figuring out how to destroy their homes and eat them, not to mention unflattering if the people who leaned into the survival of the fittest and alpha species mentality are defined as the destructive opportunist.

I understand *WHY* we do it, but we should really stop anthropomorphizing evolution, especially on TH-cam . Life didn't "figure out" or "decide" anything, as this implies some sort of concious will behind adaptation. I mean, there very well might be, we don't know. But it's not required, nor is it implied in our understanding of natural selection. People already have some huge misconceptions regarding evolution as it stands, and this language isn't helping. I get that it's shorthand for people who we already know to have a firm grasp on the basics of evolutionary theory. However, when you're speaking to an audience as large and diverse as yours is, I have to assume that a percentage of those people *don't* have that understanding of evolution. Speaking this way just muddies the waters, IMHO.
EDIT: Well nevermind. There's the "Tangent Cam" explanation. Thank you sir!
