Thank you so much for making such a fantastic video featuring our book! Altamira is an incredibly rich and diverse biosphere, it's been super fun to open it up to so many fantastic artists! I hope everyone here will enjoy REFUGIUM in its final form!
I’m so excited you covered Altamira!! I’m an artist that gets to take part in this awesome project, I can’t wait for everyone to check this out!! This is the BIGGEST spec evo collab ever
I love how so many spec bio creators like Koseman and Ries got together for this, filling in not just the artwork, but the biological info too. What a team!
I like how the whole "Terraforming an alien planet to make it more suitable for human life" thing is basically one giant metaphor for real-world habitat destruction. Granted, in this case, they're technically just replacing an alien ecosystem with a more Earth-like ecosystem; nevertheless, the parallels are still very much there. There's even the Kicking Wolverton, which was arguably spread to Altamira by accident. If it was accidental, then they'd be a parallel to many invasive species of real-world barnacles, which were inadvertently spread to inland regions when they clung to the bottoms of ships.
It’s even more directly comparable to rats, which humans spread by ships to many regions they weren’t native too, especially islands where they dealt massive devastation.
Just think of Australia. I'm in Europe, but I get anxiety sometimes thinking about how Australia's biosphere has been permanently altered, with the addition of so many placental mammals, that will likely never leave (foxes, rabbits, CATS, dingoes, horses, camels, deer, cattle, banteng, buffalo).
This looks so cool! The blend of terraformed and not terraformed is always an interesting take! Stuff like this brings me back to the good old days, reading Heavy Metal and finding articles in the 'Galactic Geographic' docu-fiction by Karl Kofoed. The art and the way it was written like a scientific paper was such a joy!
I saw Jay Eaton's research in their blog but didn't expect you to cover this project so fast! Great video, thank you for bringing more speculative biology to us
Some people watching this channel need to sub right now, it deserves way more subs. Thank you for divulging such quality content. I still appreciate learning about Simon Stålenhag from you.
Ngl i wish we got hour long vids in this channel, i would sit my ass down in heartbeat and watch em fully when they come out, the current short ones are great still, love em
Man, how sick would a video covering Eaton's Runaway To The Stars project be~!? That work of theirs is such a delight, being more slice-of-life than just some grand, galactic epic.
I want more of this type of spec evo related video's, please, explore more projects, its really motivating and also fun to watch.😅 And thank you for this entry in archive....
I loved this world and its lifeforms! I had seen some of the artist share their work on it on instagram a couple days ago, it was fun to see them portrayed here as researchers and experts!
Wow, this felt like the Super Smash Bros of spec bio creators!!! It is very cool to see so many artists working in such a unique and expansive project; congratulations for all the wonderful work everyone did, including Curious Archive for sharing it with us ^^
Yes!!! Love seeing Simon Roy featured on this channel. Been a huge fan of his specevo work since coming across his dinosauroids design project years ago.
I love this style of video where you document the flora/fauna if a functional world from the perspective of someone in the world. I loved your subnautica videos and this one is great, keep up the good work!
14:55 This is world building at it's peak, one of the most produced pieces of literature since the Industrial Revolution are Agricultural Bulletins, agricultural organisations collect better technics for planting and creating livestock, on a planet like Altamira this would be a crucial piece of shared knowledge for all colonists.
This is so lovingly made! I love that it takes itself seriously at just the right moments to really sell the buy-in. I can't wait for this project to come out!!
Yo those are the legitimate best bug analogies ive EVER seen for a scifi project. Like theyre common enough looking that you can point one out and go "look a pinwheel" just like bugs BUT, they arent just like small animals or juat bugs again, they have a distinctly alien feel to them. And then you see the SPIRAL THORN QUEEN, and i was just flabbergasted at how creative and visually striking it was at the same time without lessening either. Madly impressive stuff here.
Yay, Jay Eaton mentioned! I'm still waiting for the day you cover their setting, Runaway to the Stars. Not only does it have really interesting posthuman designs, it also has a number of nonhuman sentient aliens with complex history and biology all interacting with one another, which I think would be very interesting to see-- considering most projects covered so far only have one sentient alien species.
i think you should make a video about Runaway to the Stars. the setting is super fascinating, and now that Jay has started publicly releasing their comic, it would be perfect time :D
Altamira is quite the place! Say, by the way, here's another idea I suggest you cover in a future video: the alien worlds of the 2005 British-American TV miniseries Extraterrestrial (known as Alien Worlds in the UK) from National Geographic.
"They _would_ be frightening.. if they were more than a few centimeters long." As someone with a generalized phobia of arthropods: That won't stop my fight or flight response from kicking in.
Your other work is interesting, but this video stands out to me being so fast-paced compared to your others. I like it a lot. I hope you do more like it. love your work CA!
When I saw the species information in the comic, I figured it'd be something for this channel. It's pretty sad everyone on Webtoons is sleeping on this project, but I guess they're not the right audience. Been a fan of Simon Roy's work since the Prophet reboot. I've also found Roy's settings, and Altamira in particular, to be quite reminiscent of the work of Leo, beginning with the Aldebaran series (which is the best, together with Distant Worlds, but the others are alright).
Fr, i stopped watching shorts just yesterday, and only watching long videos, to cure my brain, i feel much better already, next step is just cutting out social media all together.
omg i got so excited when i heard one of my favourite artists Jay Eaton mentioned! i love their work so much it’s what got me interested in speculative biology and such
Love these speculative zoology videos. P.S. you should make a video breaking down some fan made monster concepts for Monster Hunter. Would be interesting to hear your on them.

This looks like South scrimshaw. Haven't watched yet but I'm always happy when I see one of your videos cover a project
I really like the alien designs. They don't feel too earth-like but also not too alien.
It's incredible that all of my goats come together for this project 🐐🔥
The art in this is gorgeous. I hope they have great success
this is my favorite kind of curious archive video, in depth information on a speculative ecosystem, more of this sort of thing please
