I really do hope you take the feedback about lack of diversity to heart at Shadowborne Games. I remember I and a few others trying to bring this up during the original campaign, but as so often before within the board game community, not being sincerely listened to. It’s not good enough that diversity is solely explained by there being fantastical, non-human characters when every human character is white. It’s not good enough to say “keep politics out of board games” when all art has a degree of politics. Representation matters, also in board games. Shadowborne Games, now that you are growing as a company with a growing level of attention and fans you have a unique position to affect change and I would say an obligation to do so. I say that, as I believe you are a company that is willing to do that as you learn from growing.
What Karim said. I think this is really important and a responsible thing for a publisher to do. Lead as you mean to go on.
@@ghyslainabel How does Lord of the Rings relate to our own world other than there are humans and trees and mountains (and lots of other stuff we don't have here).
The movies even were produced in New Zealand and looked totally at home with the landscape, and New Zealand has Maori people that haven't changed their skin color yet.

This. Absolutely. Witcher kickstarter was popular because of the IP but the game... dudes on a map playing poker dice... ;)
Witcher has a brilliant combat system..! Add the monster trail expansion and you have an amazing and super thematic combat system!

Thanks for this great review, I'm glad you guys enjoyed the game, too! As an intermediate painter I do feel bad for the huge boxes, though I enjoyed painting every mini so much. These are my absolutely favorite minis in a board game, until now, when it come to how they turn out painted. I'm so happy every time I see these minis on the table, even the terrain, we use it all the time. So yeah, it takes up a lot of space, but it's worth it for me.
As someone who has begun painting his copy and finished quite a bit of bit, I can confidently say: Yup, these are good miniatures and not just big. The heros are up to GW standard and made from HIPS, although not as rich in detail, and the monster minis are below GW-standard, but great for a board game mini made from PVC, and that for a fraction of the price (a GW mini of that size would cost about 150 $ alone, you might know). You still can prefer standees, though, of course!
Also, just glue your minis except the arms! You won't experience them falling apart no more after that.

I think you are mistaking quality with fidelity. Of course all great art needs some combination of both, but a highly detailed figure you have no wish to display is a bad mini regardless. Minis are just sculptures, and sculptures without sufficient artistry are just high fidelity lumps of material... in this case plastic.

Thanks for your take! I went back and compared and you are correct. These models are great for the price, but not quite up to GW’s standards. Even so they are effective for immersion and really help less experienced players get into the game.
I love you guys so much! You always manage to put a smile on my face (thank you!) while covering awesome games I will never get to play, but dream of having at least one session of them before dying!

This is a Master Class in board game review. Which is…something to be proud of? I was once bitten by a coniferous tree. What a pine in the ass.
I haven't heard anyone say this yet, but this really reminds me of old school Battletech (or the new school revival of the IP). Attacking locations, dice, managing cooldown on attacks (it was literal cooldown from weapon heat in BT), ammo turned into animus, and in the hardcore campaign rules for old Battletech, losing weapons permanently.
Plus, like old school Battletech, lots of rulebooks and tables, etc... line of sight, targeting, initiative, facing hexes, attack locations... and lots of custom minis. Plus lance size = 4 mechs and Oathsworn is always 4 players.
Went all in. Still in boxes as house is being remodeled. So glad to hear and see this video lol. You guys are Brilliant!
Me stopping at when Kefka is showing his RPG collection and seeing he too is a Free League fan. I love Vaesen and I'm very surprised the Mythical Britain book isn't in there.
I don't need mythical Britain, real Britain is already enough! (jokes aside, I do own it, and if it's not there, then it's somewhere else in the house).
@@NoPunIncluded it's a fantastic book. I really need to run it. I love Free League so much I even got Twilight 2000 AD but then the world decided to make that RPG real and haven't touched it at all.
Created a game group just to get people to play this. After discovering the miniatures, I had to create a craft group to paint them. Worth it 100%
I laughed harder then I should have at the carnivorous tree bit.

Saw Oath and got super excited, then realized it's Oathsworn and got slightly less, but still very much, excited.
Oath is not really the best game of this decade.
Instead it's likely the best game of all times.

Thank you for the fair review! I've been standing on a $1 for a while, since Cthulhu: Death May Die happens at the same time (and it is my favorite game, so all-in). Your video helped me decide I don't need Oathsworn - too big, long, clunky and rules-heavy. Sticking to C:DMD, Jaws of the Lion, Sleeping Gods and Dice Throne Adventures for the co-op campaign fun.
Yea, C:DMD seasons 3 & 4 are pretty much manditory, which doesn't leave much dosh or time for Oathsworn

A+. That was one incredibly entertaining review. I cant believe I just typed that, but it is true. There were several laugh out loud moments. Oh and it was very informative about the pros and the cons of the game. Looking forward to seeing more of your reviews. Including Flamecraft.
As someone who spends a lot of time on myminifactory looking at cool miniatures to 3D print, I can say that there are way cooler monster designs and figures out there. On the other hand, most of them are extremely Kingdom Death Monster super-grim-dark and also they'd be much harder to mass produce without failures. I wasn't originally too keen on the kinda grimdark, kinda not-typical-fantasy theme, but now I think that it works in the game's favor in being more widely approachable.
As my absolute favourite reviewers, I'm so glad you guys loved this beast of a game. I've really, really enjoyed Oathsworn. So much so that it inspired me to create my own channel and review it. But, that's also thanks to you two. Seeing how much you enjoyed this, and don't enjoy most other bloated kickstarter games, our tastes seem to align so much. It makes me curious to try other games I've ignored over the years because of bloat and expense that you have loved as well. Things like Too Many Bones or Sleeping Gods. But, I'll have to finish Oathsworn's campaign first, and that probably will last me til after Christmas.

Actually right now they have a ‘reprint KickStarter’ so you can buy the standeepack alone so you can save the minis space :)
And regarding the minis, I think you overlook or pass some of the reason why someone like me like the minis, it is not because of the size, or to have grey plastic, it is actually to paint it, it’s an insane value for money in that regard, and I LOVE that we can play a epic story chapter, unpack a cool mini and (hopefully) defeat it with our own little story and then I paint it to show off our trophy on the shelf :) OR right now we just completed the story section and had to stop and then I paint the minis ready for the next combat section…
For people that paint the minis, they are very fun to paint, you mentioned that the sculpting is ‘so-so’? Well that actually makes the minis very fun to paint, instead of an overly complex one :)
criticisms. I'm a native speaker and still have to see that typed out to make sure it's correct. The word you wrote is when you critique the computer game Sims and all it's expansions.
A couple of things about the App.
The narration is wonderful, though at times we wish there was a secondary voice to break from the monotony
Be sure to doublecheck the epilogue in books at the end of each chapter. There are rewards given that the App omits (typically Iron/allies)
Occasionally there is some art included in a Chapter, sadly clicking on the art doesn't expand to fill the screen, kind of a shame.
So essentially you would recommend picking up the Standee version over the minis right? I've been on the fence about which would be better and I really don't have the space for all of those extra boxes. The Standee version is way more appealing because it's one box.

Standee version for the win. Less plastic, less space, less painting and you can chain Story and Encounter...
I got the standee version of the game, and I'm really glad that's the route I decided to take. The game is so good, but it really doesn't feel like I'm missing anything consequential, and having the whole game in one box (taking less space on the shelf), with quicker setup and take down, and not having giant plastic obstructing what I'm doing, while saving 2/3 the cost of the all in is a lot of win. The game is one of the best I've played in this vein and well worth someone's time if what they see interests them, here's hoping for a sequel in the future!

Personally I am almost done currently on chapter 19, and while I can say the writing is very well done throughout, their were certain chapters that were just bland. Also I realized they give you options of choice, but the real choice doesn't matter and really is just what type of token you want. Then you go to the combat which is really fun, but the battle flow system is really unnecessary gimmick, those cards always come back to your hand. Lastly the game seems to be rather easy, compared to what many have stated, I have only had one knockout so far in the game. Characters tend to loose 2-3 health in every battle, but the monster goes down before defeating the characters. Which is probably why the update pack boosted many of the Special Encounter Boards stats. Still think the game is really good, just personally think its over hyped based on early scenario's which are harder due to the lack of tokens and items you can get, when later scenarios become quite easy based on cards and abilities you have that just can decimate the monsters.

My gaming group and I feel that the greatest and best genre of game is “plastic miniatures rolling dice to kill other plastic miniatures”.
Massive Darkness is our favorite game.
Sometimes someone brings a eurogame to the table, and they are….. fine.
Now, I’ve admittedly not watched your videos before, but I got a strong vibe you are the polar opposite of my group and I.
I was confused at first when you showed how big it was with all the miniatures and you were coming across like that’s a bad thing. 😅
So this review was really interesting from that point of view.

You can still glue the miniatures without ruining the armory. There are a good guides on TH-cam that go over where to glue for each miniature.
I believe the kickstarter that is running now, comes with pre glued base miniatures.
I'm a big fan of magnetizing. Ive done it for tons of model sizes, and a fully magnetized set is absolutely magical.
Standee version seems a great option. The monsters generally appear as a surprise by opening up box..then its oh wait need to paint first. Standees open up the letter and carry on playing.

Great review ^^ though I don't understand the hate against Tainted Grails story, I really think that the story is one of its strong points :D very excited what the 2.0 update will do for it
Same. TG was one of my favourite campaign board game experiences ever and the story had a lot to do with that because the gameplay was mostly repetitive.
It's a great game. I ordered additional standees thinking that I'd use them and sell the minis. However, the minis are so much fun and the standees so bland, that I've never reached for standees after the first encounter. If you have seen the standee version, I think you'd agree, bloat or no bloat :D
I’m sitting on a $1 pledge trying to figure out if this will live up to the hype. I just received Chronicles of Drunagor, and backed Euthia. How many giant games does one person need?
I have over 100 games and have owned and sold on others. Oathsworn is one that will never leave my collection as I really believe that it is one of the best games that I have ever played. Luckily my wife left me shortly after my copy arrived so I now have her sewing room to put it all in!
@@haxan6663 I share your sentiment. I'm 10 years into the hobby so have seen my fair share of games. I'm an original KS backer for the Standee version and went all-in in the new KS. It's not leaving my collection.
Great review! It looks very intriguing and I will be curious how it compares to Frosthaven. 21 scenarios seems a tad on the light side for $125 but if they are thick and meaty perhaps sustainable? My daughter snorted out loud when you put the house over the rat and said, "Disney". Brilliant.

This video made me back the standee version. Minis are great. I have many miniature games. But, it seems most of the minis are used once then put back in the box. That’s a lot of money for single use pieces of plastic. You guys think that the standee version will be worth it?

nah, it's just fur texture but BIG.
Its ok. Composition is good and concept is cool, detail is so-so.

At this moment this game is one of my top 10 of the last 5-10 years..
There are some minor hiccups , but the game is a frigging accomplishment

I am so tempted to back but have read a criticism that the players' actions are somewhat irrelevant.
Wow I’d seen this endlessly advertised on BGG and assumed it was another bloated, OTT mess. Your recommendation has definitely got me keeping an eye on this one - cannot even fathom how much I’d prefer the standee 😂

Was watching while shaving my face. The unexpected “how bout deez nuts” caused me to laugh. I took 2 damage to the face 😂😂 and I can’t stop laughing or get the shaving cut to stop. Love it
They now offer the standees as a separate purchase on their website, so you can have both.
I was an all-in and don’t regret it but the standee version would be just as good.
You can partially glue the minis in a way that makes them work as intended while still allowing changeouts.
"The expansive story needs something mechanical to reward the players that engage with it" - totally unlike King's Dilemma, I'm sold!

Put me in the small pile of people that prefer standees over miniatures.
Glad I backed the new campaign, standee version as I have no room for any more minis that are not really needed and I stopped playing with Swoppits over 55 years ago, well apart from Kingdom Death Monster. The new campaign is welcolme by everyone except it is probably causing the scalpers to tear their own hair out.
Whilst I wait for delivery, I have my newly arrived Chronicles of Drunagor AOD 1.5 to entertain me and I am wondering why you haven't reviewed this and 1.5 Chapters in is immersive and fun and the writing is better than Tainted Grail.

I did recently go through Sleeping Gods and realize this type of game may not be for me...especially when I can play a solo video game (300+hrs on Skyrim and now firing up Fall Out 4) for a lot less money and not dependent on a gaming group meeting.
This episode (wait, does anyone remember how 'Space: 1999' started with a title sequence... "This Episode, This Episode"? No? Fine.) Where was I? Oh yes, Elaine dropped some of the best NPI moments to date here without question... but what does she have against meat-eating trees? 😄 Don't say collection, either.

From what I heard the standee isn't great either for other reasons. Like the rule of you facing the monster. How do you determine that you are facing the standee?
The standees have artwork for both the front and back of the monster/minion so you can determine facing
