I agree with you. The refs are so afraid to decide games for teams, that they don't call the obvious penalties, the ones written in the book. But in fact, it's the players that decide the results of a game.
The players decide the game for good or bad, if a player gets a 5 minute major then it’s not the refs fault. It’s the players fault, refs not calling a major penalty simply leaves it open for players to take liberties with each other’s safety and escalates the potential injury next time it happens.

The refs call penalties to dictate the pace and feel of the game, not to enforce the rule book. They should probably revise the rule book considering how many infractions they treat as a grey area.

Standard trash from NHL refs during the playoffs. They "let them play," which means letting multiple crosschecks go, along with the wrestling match in the corner and multiple blatant slashes. By my count there are probably 6 or 7 minors penalties that happen in the corner (total, from both teams), all uncalled. Then someone inevitably gets frustrated and does something stupid. In this case it's Krejci, going straight for the balls. Now the refs are looking at an obvious major penalty, but they're in a tough spot because it's the direct result of them letting multiple minor penalties go. And a major takes a key contributor out of the game for Boston. They try to tidy everything up by downgrading to a minor, but now everyone is mad. Boston's mad because none of the other penalties got called. New York's mad because Barzal just took a cheap shot to the nuts and it only resulted in a minor penalty. The idiot refs just need to call the rule book. The teams would figure it out quick. Because this whole thing is just stupid.

Do you really think that the league isn't telling them exactly how they want the game called? They have supervisors in the buliding, Toronto watching the game live. Especially when it's the older guys who usually have had some amount of back problems. I personally think hitting to the nuts is always bad form, i think he should have given a really hard slash at the knee instead. Would that be potentially debilitating, sure. But so are shots to the spine. I get the some cross checking will happen from pushing people away from the net or pinning to the boards but those were just cheap shots to the back. Definitely should've been called because he's just trying to hurt people. Refs let it get out of hand and stupid happens, we see it every series, every year.

Those were typical stick nudges that occur in every hockey game. Barzal's "cross-checks" were not penalty worthy. And if DeBrusk hadn't cross-checked Mayfield in the back of the head in Game 2 maybe the games wouldn't have the nasty edge that they do. And DeBrusk didn't get called for that cross-check so the Bruins got away with one there.

The refs also couldn't say 2 minutes for spearing because no such penalty exists. An attempted spear that makes no contact is a double minor 4 minutes. Any spear that makes contact is 5+game.
NHL refs are genuinely the worst. Why wouldn't you call cross checking on Barzel, he hit the Boston player multiple times from behind, and he was near the play looking for the puck, but he didn't have the puck.

Those cross-checks are typical for those corner scrums for the puck. Barzal took a couple of those cross-checks himself early in the clip. The cross-checks that Barzal was dishing out were no more than the garden-variety nudges one sees in every game. Remember the cross-check that Mayfield took from DeBrusk in Game 2? Yeah, that one didn't get called either - but that one easily merited a penalty. At least the league fined DeBrusk $5000 the next day.
I'm pretty sure every player in that game cross checked someone. It's pretty standard in the playoffs. But if you don't like it - fight the player like a man. That's respectable. You look like a tool if you're gonna smack another man in the nuts.

You don’t need to fight in hockey. Krecji is a European player, many of them don’t fight nor should they have to. It’s hockey, not MMA. If a teammate goes down then sure, stick up for him. But there is no requirement to fight in the NHL. So to say, “when you get crosschecked in the back you just turn around and fight home like a man” is stupid. That is not hockey. Hockey is not only a North American sport. It is a national sport. And the national hockey league has players of different nationalities. You can’t hold European players to the NA standers. This has been known for decades.

If referees start calling penalties, a few games will be wacky, but players (and coaches) will quickly understand that it will not be tolerated and start to play differently. It will also bring fans back to the game. The NHL isn’t doing too great in the fans department.

Cross checking within a certain limit is legal or at least not called. Soft to the lower back isn’t called. Spearing is. He got away with one.

The interpretation is specific and simple. Referees, however, have some (in my opinion too much) leeway in whether to call a penalty or not.

Well, the refs couldn't say "two minutes spearing", the poor guy would never get another date.
The refs also couldn't say 2 minutes for spearing because no such penalty exists. An attempted spear that makes no contact is a double minor 4 minutes. Any spear that makes contact is 5+game.

NHL refs are genuinely the worst. Why wouldn't you call cross checking on Barzel, he hit the Boston player multiple times from behind, and he was near the play looking for the puck, but he didn't have the puck.

@@afcgeo882 Its playoff hockey.... for a decade the officiating has been basically no calls unless its OBVIOUS and I do mean obvious. They let them play, that's what the fans want we want the scrums we want the emotion. We want the gladiators on ice battling.
So many people annoyed with the fans chanting "asshole" and the refs not giving out major penalties.
1)I personally love the chants of the crowd. They're finally able to go to games and chant what they want again. It reminded me of the good ol' WWF days lol
2) The Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win for a reason. Refs don't want to dictate a 1-1 hockey game by giving a team a 5 minute PP if it's not totally warranted. Go watch the NFL if you want to watch officials decide a game instead of the players.

The refs screwed this entire play, the 3 missed crosschecks lead to the spear, then they topped off their own mistake by calling it a slash
Those little cross checks are never called I mean I like that there is some consistency.
Those cross-checks are typical for those corner scrums for the puck. Barzal took a couple of those cross-checks himself early in the clip. The cross-checks that Barzal was dishing out were no more than the garden-variety nudges one sees in every game.
Remember the cross-check that Mayfield took from DeBrusk in Game 2? Yeah, that one didn't get called either - but that one easily merited a penalty. At least the league fined DeBrusk $5000 the next day.

I'm pretty sure every player in that game cross checked someone. It's pretty standard in the playoffs. But if you don't like it - fight the player like a man. That's respectable. You look like a tool if you're gonna smack another man in the nuts.
So i guess the cross checks on Barzal in the beginnig of the video are totaly fine, right? At least he was not complaining about it. He went to the other side and did the same to Krejci -> got smacked in the nuts.

You don’t need to fight in hockey. Krecji is a European player, many of them don’t fight nor should they have to. It’s hockey, not MMA. If a teammate goes down then sure, stick up for him. But there is no requirement to fight in the NHL. So to say, “when you get crosschecked in the back you just turn around and fight home like a man” is stupid. That is not hockey. Hockey is not only a North American sport. It is a national sport. And the national hockey league has players of different nationalities. You can’t hold European players to the NA standers. This has been known for decades.

If referees start calling penalties, a few games will be wacky, but players (and coaches) will quickly understand that it will not be tolerated and start to play differently. It will also bring fans back to the game. The NHL isn’t doing too great in the fans department.
