This is the song that, if you'll pardon the bad pun, really lit the fuse on the Doors career. I bought their album in 1967 when it was released and saw them in the summer of '67 at the Retinal Circus, an older ballroom in Vancouver...some people crowded around where the band was set up on the ballroom floor but most people danced. The next time they played Vancouver it was in the Coliseum arena.

This band knocked down the doors with their intense musical genius. With an intoxicating, genre-blending sound, provocative and uncompromising songs, and the mesmerizing power of singer Jim Morrison's poetry and presence, The Doors had a transformative impact not only on popular music but on popular culture. I remember well how everyone was talking about the new group called "The DOORS" Only 3 musicians and a singer make all that sound. The Doors were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore

JM, you’re adding so many great bands from the late 60’s - early 70’s to your reaction repertoire! You, my man, are on top of this game. The Doors is unquestionably one of those bands that stand out. Sadly, Jim Morrison lost his life too soon in 1971 at the age of 27. He joined The 27 Club… the anomalous list of notable musicians who died at age 27. 😢 Thankfully, The Doors left us with an awesome catalog of music. ❤

  • @AliasMark69

They had no Bass Guitar player. All the Bass notes are on a Fender Rhodes 32 key Bass Electric Piano, that sat on top of his Organ. Ray played with his left hand and lead with his right at same time. REAL Talent..... BTW, I built the same pianos at Fender for 4 years.

When on the Ed Sullivan Show, Sullivan told Jim Morrison he could not use the words...'Girl we couldn't get much higher' , he insisted the words be changed to something else.. On LIVE TV.... Morrison looked right at the camera and smiled singing the words Mr. Sullivan did not want on his show. The DOORS were forever banned from the show after that ICONIC Moment in Classic Rock history.

After the performance on the show and while they were backstage Ed Sullivan had one of his people go backstage and tell "Mr. Morrison" that for the stunt he pulled they will never be invited to be on The Ed Sullivan Show ever again. Jim Morrison in his wonderful Jim Morrison fashion came back with "that's okay we've already played on The Ed Sullivan Show".

"So Many Instruments".... Only 4 not counting Jim's vocals. One small Drum Kit. One Gibson SG Guitar. "The Vox Continental organ was what I played with my right hand and the Fender keyboard bass with my left hand."- Keyboardist Ray Manzarek. The song's distinctive organ intro has been characterized as “one of the most recognizable sounds in the history of rock music”.

Not only did this band have a distinctive sound they were the first to hit the airwaves with what was to become known as the "DJ's friend" a recording about 6 minutes long that was unprecedented at the time. It gave radio dj's time to visit a facility because most recordings were about two and a half or three minutes long to be considered for air time.

The Doors didn't have a signature song and so Morrison made that a goal for everyone. That same night, Robby Krieger (guitarist) went home and composed this song. He took it to the group in the studio the next day and introduced them to it. Blew their minds. The rest is history. This is one of the most iconic 60s song of all time.

"Kind of a Jazz flavor". These are basically a bunch of Jazz musicians who got into rock and put a poet as the lead singer. Ray Manzarek gave a whole lecture on the making of this song. Started out written as a folk loungey song and developed into this Latin Jose Feliciano thingy. The intro is basically a nod to Bach. The entire keyboard solo is John Coltraine-inspired. Jim changed the lyrics to introduce death into it with "our love is like a funeral pyre". This is what happens when a good musical idea by one member goes through the rest of the top-shelf talent of a band. Out comes a dead-ass masterpiece.

Poetic genius ahead of his time. Doors couldn’t be categorized, they had their own genre with Morrison at the helm. To me it’s timeless and makes me feel like I’m reliving those years. Songs back in the day were played on the radio much longer than now and listening to this now, boy the memories come flooding back

Of course this is the hit that catapulted The Doors into the conscious of rock fans (radio friendly for AM stations back then but not for Ed Sullivan censors, LOL). Very overplayed then and now. Much prefer the delights we heard on this legendary debut album in compositions brought about by lyrics of the brilliant poet, Jim Morrison, the "Lizard King". Off this album check out “Moonlight Drive”, “The Crystal Ship”, “Soul Kitchen”, “Break On Through (To the Other Side)” and “The End”… all these songs feature lyrics by Jim. Jim and Ray Manzarek first meet when they were both enrolled as film students at UCLA. Jim and Robert Plant are two of the most influential frontmen in rock history.
