Pharrell is an insanely eloquent and clear speaker, and Rick did such a great job of asking timely, thought-provoking questions to have Pharrell dive even deeper. This was a great interview. I could listen to them have "casual" conversation for hours
I have diagnosed ADHD and music is the only thing that makes me feel normal. When I got on meds, I realized meds gave me a bit of the feeling that I get when I'm making music. totally engaged, the outside world falls away, and I can keep following the thread all the way to the end.
oh! can't wait for 3k to talk about his wack flute album posturing as ambient music when he really lacks the technique to bring us something melodically/harmonically substantial!!
I am just commenting, because there might be a chance rick Rubin or Pharrell could read my words. I already reached a point where I KNOW my art won't reach any kind of heights of any of these both careers, but I am thankful for their work and thoughts, because I feel as creative I am not alone with certain thoughts. Anyone else stumbling across this, keep on creating, hone your craft and speak from the soul/heart. Your perspective an view on the world matters, at least to you and to the ones around you. One might not get monetarily enough, but you feed the souls of your loved ones.
You're greater than what you see. You don't know anything of where your art could reach, don't tell yourself otherwise especially if its not a choice you wish to make. You control where you go by your decisions and thoughts, be wary of the story you tell yourself.
@@ExamplesOfMyExistence Thank you for that very self-reflective comment! I appreciate your view on my struggle. Sure I've got a certain view of my artistic as well as personal journey I go through while being creative. I don't know maybe I just want to vent a little bit and vocalize my inner frustrations. It might be part social media and simply lack of eyes on my work. I mean without trying to sound like I want to be an "influencer", it is just. At the end, Art / Music is meant to be looked at and heard, otherwise it isn't art. The play and reaction with the viewer and audience is in symbiosis with the creation process of the artist. Otherwise what is it other than a therapeutic practice, or a hobby?
@@LevelH34D No problem family. Of course we all vent, and I understand the frustration of the lack of validation and/or acceptance. I do have to ask though, are you not an observer of the art you create? Is getting views on social media from random people really what makes this expression of yourself art? I’m sure you go out into the world whether for work or a social life maybe food, the clothing you wear when you go out, is that not a unique expression of yourself that’s others see and experience constantly? Brother when you talk to others are you not sharing your personal vision? It’s all simpler than we think, start small with little things you can share and show, decide what you want to do and how to do it, but be patient with yourself and allow it to come. Perhaps you reach no one as you say, if this isn’t satisfactory change what you’re doing. Art is expression brother, what you want out of it is what you will work to get. Do not do the same thing with no results and expect it to change (I don’t know your life or things you’ve done, take these words as you will)
haha so true, Pharrell is the living legend because hes seriously been following his curiosity his whole career, like my big brother through my whole journey as an artist
I don’t know why, perhaps from growing up a musician and not too much younger than Pharrell, but I found myself crying all throughout the entire Piece by Piece. Especially as a Filipino-American, they really did Chad Hugo well, despite the lawsuit issues they’re having. I’m nowhere near as successful as a musician, but it literally was like looking at a reflection of my own life, and what a creative way to do so. I really hope him and Chad patch things up.
@ really? Tell me what’s better, Neptunes sh!t or everything Pharrell did after that? All that music was laid down by Chad. Down to the drum programming. Also, Pharrell never could work alone, always needed some kind of muse when Chad stepped back. Just because Chad prefers less spotlight doesn’t mean he’s a snake. Pharrell wouldn’t be capable of the things he does now if it wasn’t for Chad. Even Pharrell would say that. Why you think he slowed down on the music to seek other ventures? You obviously didn’t watch movie thoroughly. TBH, Pharrell’s the real snake, but I mean that in the best way possible. He’s an inspirational icon either way. This whole beef is just unfortunate.
@@pastensebro both of them apart probably wouldnt be were they are today. You can say “whats better neptunes stuff or Pharrells solo stuff” and come to the conclusion that neptunes stuff is better but you can say the same thing about neptunes stuff vs solely chads stuff. Them together is better than either apart. I just hope they resolve this issue before they are both no longer
Never heard Pharrell speak in interview.... Very in depth and thoughtful person.... He speaks like as he knows, what he knows, he really knows... Very confident in what he says and how he speaks. Very insightful and thought provoking as well....
best pop songwriter in hip-hop history...the stuff he wrote for MJ and Prince...like "You Don't Have To Call" and "I'm A Slave For You" and the whole Justified album for Justin...some of that stuff would have been MJ's or Prince's best single on whatever album they would have released in the 2000's...but apparently, they didn't hear what was special about Pharrell's work...
Him and chad were giving out hits like free candy. Here you go Snoop, Britney and Justin. Heres a hit for you Nelly, Jay Z and Usher. Have a couple hits Gwen, Ludacris and Kelis. Lol
The 26:00 minute mark totally had me fixed on Acts 17:26 .. "From one man He made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands." ... Pharrell gets this for real.
This is a powerful interview. Thank yall both. I really resonate with what Pharrell was speaking on regarding the Spiritual impact of Music , and how he found that early in the Church. As a child I do not remember much about the sermons in ( Baptist) Church , but in hindsight I do remember feeling things through the music , voices, and instruments that were used . The choir , and the musicians spoke things I couldnt explain until now in that music.. I keep learning that Music is really a spiritual vibration… and the voices, momentum , and instruments in the music speak their own language.. I always say that I want more Rap Musicians to utilize more live instrumentation because it would literally bring life to their music .. and I think eventually major healing/redirection in messaging too..
I love hearing topics around church and music, as well asv sound and universal concepts. This chat covered some dope points. One of the bars that I really resonated with is when Pharrell said: "Anything that is concievable, can happen"!
When Pharrell said at the end that he has long prayers and even pray for people he lost in contact with, that's a person who cares about people. And him teaching his kids empathy and humility through actions. That's very inspiring to just help people just because (no rewards or expecting of getting something back)
LOVE this interview!! So much respect for the both of you as artists. Would love a music collaboration with you two!! Also, took my family to see your movie for my birthday. EVERYONE LOVED IT!!! (Ages 46-10) We were dancing in our seats. It was so much fun. Thank you for that magic! 🥰🧱🎶❤
Hearing Pharrell say when it comes to creating about his self it’s usually uninspiring, like a mirror looking into a mirror but when it comes to creating for others the potential is unlimited. I relate so much to that commissions feels so much more fulfilling than person projects
It’s The “I Want This For Everybody For Me”! Clear indication that if you push through fear, push through doubt, you can & will achieve “Greatness & Phenomenal Things”!
"being able to do what you love...endlessly, I want that for people." wow, thank you for your well-wishes and beautiful energy, Pharrell. It is received and I will draw/paint/create for the rest of my life. No one may see my creations, and that's ok because I am in love with the journey. I am grateful to be connected to the universe and the earth in this way.
Praying for Pharrell. I love his perspective on church and God. Many ppl need to have a relationship with God and understand how the Holy Spirit is so powerful. It can shift a room just with worship and music
Man P your amazing, wise words always lift up. And thank you through my love to your music and persona, you give a remind to us to never give up and motivation to continue, because we exist.
Pharrell, maybe one day i could tell you in person but just in case Im not able too, thanks for the lesson in humility. I’ve never considered how egotistical I was until now. Your music is phenomenal but your perspective, outstanding. Thank you.

didn't have any expectations clicking on the link, but in the end it's good to say that Pharell seems like a great guy! loved the stories about music in church and his appreciation of the "existence".
Great conversation/interview! May I suggest that all the backgrounds be nature landscapes? That tree behind you and Matthew McConaughey was beautiful and comforting. It really soothed the tone.

Ironically he says he knows all these parts in his life but there is more at play then one realizes especially looking back. It's clear to me he was thinking wrong about it because he would say certain things such as I wouldn't of ever dreamed of this. To me even though he says liberated, looking back can be a whole different perspective than what was lived because of what ur future self could be doing and/or just a different narrative is written when all of the pieces fit and ur dreams actually are unlocked and understood. Like in real time, finding these things out versus thinking back and having new knowledge so when u dive in ur memory u can see what at the time wasn't there as a fully understood perspective; the makings of ur true self in full action as opposed to living it, not realizing up until it becomes present and then being ur real self without knowing how u got there. Both great but one is more fulfilling and the other one probably won't get to see that and might die before their real self is revealed to them if not recognized as a newborn and on...

The way Pharrell pauses to collect his thoughts… really want to learn from that. He commands attention
The way he recollects his church experience, hes describes it so fresh and heartfelt and excited like hes still that kid in church, it just grabs you
Testament to Rick also. He gives the space.
