I used donkey guard against 5 former NFL linemen in a bar fight outside of Tucson. It worked so well and struck such fear in them that the 5th one that came at me tried to donkey guard my donkey guard, but I donkey guarded it back which trumped his counter-donkey and created a donkey singularity thus creating the universe we now inhabit. You're welcome.
Neil Melanson was also one of the first people advocating the use of leglocks more and more Eventually leglocks exploded, and even he was amazed how big they became etc. Pioneer in his own way that man
Beautiful breakdown. I thought the pacing of the video was excellent, good information but not too much so viewers wouldn’t be overwhelmed. Great editing as per - keep it going my man.
Just realized I called pre-k “shallow” a lot, where Lachlan and others use shallow to refer to a lower down K on the shin! Apologies if that causes confusion haha.
Great breakdown - have watched a K Guard system where the guy advocates for not connecting hands, rather using the non-entry hand for framing in the armpit while the free leg knee shields across the high chest/neck line. Feel like that would help mitigate strikes even more for sub setups/off-balance
I think knee shield half is the best home base guard. Being a one in one out guard you can transition to inside position (butterfly, half butterfly, x guard) and outside position (closed, k, dlr) guards whilst also controlling distance to protect vs strikes, whilst threatening either stand ups/underhook half guard dog fight attacks if top player is passive, or sweep or sub attacks if they pressure in. Obviously being in a fully established shoulder crunch butterfly guard, ashi/50-50/saddle positions, or a fully established deep k guard or even a high closed guard is better, but harder to get to initially. Plus a lot of guard recovery from various positions go straight into halfguard, and its easy to pull from a failed single leg.
Damn what a goated lil channel you have. Came here from the Nicky Ryan run vid. Concise and clear breakdowns, snappy production, and a soothing voice. Easy sub, well done.
Awesome breakdown. We released a video on the k guard recently and it became our best watched video ever. It’s very popular and I personally use it a lot in mma too. Thanks for the breakdown
Excellent video. The freeze frames and highlighting certain moments to explain is great. This video explanation is a quality most mma analysts can't even dream of getting to.
Keep these type of videos coming. It's the reason I followed you! It would be great if you also slowed down the clips after showing the techniques so to better see them. 👌
I really love your style of explanation. Not only the depth of explanation but the video editing, the way you highlight specific techniques in the fight footage is super clear. Awesome work, looking forward to more technique vids!
I think Diego would’ve finished that wrong side triangle if the round didn’t end there. It was deep and those are so hard to escape. You also have a really strong kimura option there. What a stud.
I have been trying to get good at k guard for mma for a while now bought neils instructional and everything. Thanks for making this well structured video breakdown!
I switch to k guard from rubber guard a bit if I’m getting stacked, but mostly if they are posturing out of closed guard earlier. Play more of Lockys style of K guard to backside 50 unless there’s an easy pendulum or dump to arm bar. Pretty much agree with all your points, excellent video!
Upkicks from the bottom fighter when both are grounded would be the biggest game changer for bjj/wrestling/striking. Massive deterrent to ground and pound.
I’ve been adding k guard into my guard play system and honestly i love it, im a heavy triangle attacker, outside/inside dela riva guard player And k guard just slots perfectly into my game.
Great video! I think this channel gets more and more important for serious competitors. And huge shoutout to White in Black! I didn’t expect to see my old coches Yigit and Ozgur Hanay. You have to make a breakdown for Yigit’s brown belt IBJJF nogi world championship run.
Would have love to see you breakdown Mike Mallot’s loss to Neil Magny because a K-guard entry spelled the beginning of that ending sequence. Not sure if it was a gas tank thing (he was definitely tired at the end there) or the fact that he went a more traditional jiu jitsu route seemingly looking for a heel hook which allowed Magny to get some shots in from standing. Either way, great video as always! Love the channel!
I hate playing guard, but when I do, it's pretty much always K guard. It's fairly safe and you can almost always get one of those 3 things out of it: leg entry, stand up, upper body attack. Great video!
Its a great offensive uphrade over closed guard for sure, and a natural transition when they posture/stand up. I think without clothing for lapel grips and friction closed guard isnt great when strikes are involved. Good intermittent way to stop a pass and break posture, but i reckon its better to use that brief window of broken posture to get your grips and switch to something else. I also think knee shield half guard is great for stopping strikes and getting up/getting the underhook for dogfight. Plus it transitions into half butterfly easily and from there youve got your x guards, ashis, saddle entries, or the clamp.
It's not about 1 guard, it's about blending the guards. Even full guard can have a place when mixed with other guards. K guard, Turtle, Half guard (with dog fight intention), Butterfly guard, and all of the other alphabet guards Underrated are some of the other auxiliary controls for finishing the RNC. For example, the omaplata and reverse calf slicer, as shown in the video, can help control for a RNC finish
It is body dependent imo. I think with a specific physical advantages full guard can be good against an opponent but, If you don't have long legs, It is difficult to control your opponents posture and defend yourself against strikes. Also it kills fighters ability to wall walk or give their back and tripod which are some of the most effective techniques in mma.
Great breakdowns I really enjoyed watching and learning, we just started using this gaurd at the gym attend, after this I can't wait for Saturdays open mat!!! Thanks!!!
Love this breakdown but I think a few examples are not k guard per se but rather pendulum entries to top lock. Not tryna be pedantic as I understand the main idea of this tactic. I think they go hand in hand. When the top player defends the top lock they can enter the legs through a very BJJ style k guard a la Lachlan Giles and Rani Yahya
Great breakdown! I love going to kguard from closed or from any guard retention scenarios. Always thought it was underutilized in mma, and whenever I did see it used, it would be successful since most are unfamiliar with that position and are afraid of leg entanglements
I don't know a lot about k-guard, but from one watch of the video it definetly seems like in mma it's complimentary to more traditional guard types a lot of the time. I think the important thing is to be adaptable with how you mix attacks and sweeps. I don't think k is objectively superior, rather the skill to transition to it in order to work out of the bottom position is a strong skillset to have.
First time here an i must say well done . Very informative with great breakdowns along with usable footage of real life situations. Excellent all around. Ill be back
allright! 1) start from close guard (and probably some half guard positions too) 2) hook the leg to transition to a knee shield position 3) flip over and get into a deep K guard 4) ? 5) profit
Thanks! That means a lot. I left all my gear behind when I moved to the UK recently, so I'm making do with just a camera (no monitor) and a crappy lapel mic...Hopefully the channel can make a few bucks soon and I can pick up some nicer gear to keep getting the production looking good!
Thanks for this insightt! As a whitey I had only a very vague idea of what k guard was and how it could be used. I'm currently training for MMA and I hate being stuck in closed guard when I get taken down - now I'll know to start looking for the k guard entry!
Great analysis. I’m 52, brown belt, in decent shape for an old codger, but I’ve got to say that loaded low back position kinda freaks me out. Thoughts?
Thanks mate! Appreciate it :) Loaded low back is never fun, I play a lot of inversions, k-guard and DLR stuff and my back is toast at 29 years old haha
'shallow' K works best in MMA when you have an active overleg and you're constantly looking to off balance. If you're passive and allow collapse you'll get squashed.
I think deep k or even a deep k on someone who is standing square is better than that shallow k. I as the attacker in guard jus have to cross my ankles and sit heavy and that arm is useless. You just have to be away of limiting them getting a deeper angle because then there's and armbar or triangle but realistically adjusting /finishing either is incredibly hard with one arm trapped. You've lost an anchor to control posture as you adjust the triangle and you can't extend them well with the armbar (although if they don't have the best bas or if that under hook side leg is strong you can hamstring bump their shoulder for a roll in your example. It's one of those things where when you do things right it's great but you got to be clean asf with it or you're getting hammer fisted to the er
I think that there is a lot of opportunity to set up attacks from guard in MMA by underhooking the leg. Seems like in MMA a lot of people will try to stand up in guard without controlling the arm and therefore exposing themselves to k-guard, pendulum sweeps, and inversions. You don't see it as frequently in spot bjj because bjj players know not to expose themselves to having their leg underhooked.
I have actually researched this quite alot. Theres quite decent guards that are used in mma that people are turning a blind eye. First guard is underhook half guard by demian maia to dogfight or just standing up. Butterfly guard, half butterfly is used a lot too for standing up. Turtle if you count that as a guard. Theres one that is underused but used if someone knows. I have seen it used by khabib, and by other prominent mma. It is also the guard recommended by firas zahabi and john danaher Its called vale tudo guard, which is basically the williams guard, clamp guard and the pin shoulder guard by neil melanson. Its all modified clamp guard basically. Its interesting guard even though people dont really see it, you can see how people try to transition from closed guard. The Z guard or knee shield is also interesting a leon edwards, uses this alot to shrimp away and create space to stand up. K guard and the funk roll actually looks very similar. Maybe theres a connection there. Best guard to use in what i have seen to scramble up is the octopus half guard or side octopus. Best guard to just stand up. Used by gsp, khabib, thiago alves, bisping and many more. Very overlooked
Good video but i feel the closed guard is really poorly represented in this. Ground and pound opportunities exist against K guard users as well. Especially since its a leg lock entry mostly. How many times have we seen fighters get beat up or lose position when going for the legs? How many times have we seen fighters using a simple closed guard shut down G&P and then attacking with the various forms of closed guard submissions? I agree that k guard is a viable option for MMA but i hardly think its any better than many similar positions that we have been seeing for years
I have to admit - as someone who primarily trains CJJ/MMA ruleset, I came into this video *extremely* skeptical (if you can't be on top, the priority is standing up....and intentionally putting your legs over your hips to this extent isn't ideal).... ....and in the first part of the video, I found myself confirming the skepticism....just seemed like an inefficient way to get the stand up and that it'd be more worth it to just get better wrestling..... ....but by the end of the video, I was a lot more convinced. Yes, you must focus more on wrestling in this ruleset, but - if you *must* be on bottom and it *must* be full guard - this is a surprisingly solid option. So while extremely contextual (I'll still be relying on my "Demian Maia"-esque bottom half as my primary bottom game, I will be exploring this option in future training sessions when in bottom full guard (and because of this video).

The rule set makes wrestling dominant.
In one championship rules where you can knee a downed opponent in the head. This is exceptionally high risk.

This work grappling. But look how close the hand to the face. In mma, hammer fist still hurt like hell
You have options from K to limit the power hand, and I'd rather eat a close hammer fist from the offhand than a postured up power strike tbh
