      Gazzara5 that’s fair in Hilary’s case. I’m not a huge fan of the Dems and I actually agree with the Republicans on some issues but seriously, what the hell has happened to them? Teabaggers, Donald Trump. Do the GOP really stand for anything anymore? Some of the PC crap the Democrats carry on with is annoying but in terms of policy they still seem to be on this planet.

    • @djamo1969
      @djamo1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Gazzara5 Everything he said was accurate. What was inaccurate? Typical conservative response. Say something with no factual basis to back it up. Reagan did exactly all of those things Maher mentioned. And you’re the one deluded about Obama and Clinton. Another typical conservative cry. Obama was scandal free and your ilk has never gotten anything on the Clintons (except some consensual sex- something that’s evidently OK for the serial sexual assaulter your side voted for), even after 30 years of them being scrutinized more than any two people in American history.

      The deviation started a bit sooner than that. Nixon, the “paranoid moral dwarf” (says G. Carlin) started a continuous pattern of bad Republican presidents that continues to this day. Look up Eisenhower’s party platform. He was the original Antifa, army general fighting Hitler, who was a compassionate conservative before the phrase was coined. Eisenhower’s positions look similar to Biden’s. Since him, Nixon, Ford (unelected college football player), Reagan, Bush, Bush again, & Trump. Worthless bunch.

      Me too..but I wrote it out anyway! Funny, nothing on the internet mentions that the contras were trading cocaine to the Iranians for guns. The web says the guns were coming from America. In “Endless Summer II” they surfed at “Ollie’s Bay” where the guns and cocaine were exchanged. They said everyone knew except the American public. Now the Republicans have scrubbed the internet of any mention of the cocaine.

      Sadly I was born right into this, so anything that came before Reagan got into power was before my time. However, the America that was before him almost looks like a Walt Disney fantasy at this point.
      If you watch old ads on TH-cam here from the 1950s to the 1970s, they paint a different picture. Also, most of the Baby Boomers I've spoken to personally have all told me they had jobs that guaranteed them a wife/husband with two kids, and an affordable mid size home. With little to no college.
      Today you need a Master's Degree and at least one or two others with you to even afford a home these days. And with the economy on the brink of collapse due to high gas prices and oil, I feel owning a home just isn't worth the stress.

    I was in my late teens/early 20s in the 80's as well, but my memory of that era differs from yours.
    The Reagan era was the impetus for deregulation, free trade (a myth in itself), tax-cuts for the wealthy, elevating the military-industrial complex, big spending, and courting the fundie xtians for support and votes.
    Reagan's own economist, Bruce Bartlett, had this to say about Reaganomics:
    "It's nonsense. It's just made up. When it comes to creating jobs Republicans have nothing to offer."

When everybody and his dog were unemployed in a recession that started under Reagan and seemed to drag on forever, and everyone was afraid that nuclear missiles were going to start raining down on us at any time. Oh, and then there was the S&L crisis, the forerunner to the financial crisis which cost thousands their homes.
    Reagan wasn't a great President, or even a good one. Don't forget, he left office in disgrace over Iran-Contra.

    Donald Trump is showing us now exactly why Reagan would still be successful in the Republican Party. Conservatives act like third graders, it doesn't matter what you say as long as you sound tough saying it. Reagan's personality made him a right wing superstar as Trump's is now. Luckily, the demographics have shifted since the 80's. Donald Trump may have turned this election into a reality tv show, but the most polarizing contestant always takes second place. The enemies the he has made outnumber his allies and that only works until they unite under one opponent.

We have turned away from the sprit of one ness that made us great, and the price we pay is increasing income disparity, good paying jobs and benefits a thing of the past, declines in the environment and labor protections, rotten bridges, and empty cities.

    I don't agree with everything Bill says here, but I agree with a lot of it. Reaganomics was terrible and led directly to income inequality. But to forget the progress that Reagan made in ending the cold war is extremely short sighted of Bill. Do you really want to go back to the days of nuclear war being a heartbeat away? Reagan also gave great speeches and was perceived to be a leader, even though I didn't agree with very many of Reagan's policies. Sometimes just having a leader as president is more important than having a criminal as president, as we do now.

      Reagan's role in the fall of the USSR is vastly overstated. The USSR fell because of internal economic and other issues. Reagan had very little, if anything, to do with it.

    • @Dr.TJ1
      @Dr.TJ1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reagan put measures in place that devalued Soviet commodities, causing the economic strife you mentioned. Reagan also met with Gorbachev in a series of summits which led to a number of concessions by Gorbachev including the freeing of dissidents, changes to civil rights, and opening up of trade. Once the Soviet people got a taste of some of the products the west enjoyed, there was no going back. Reagan also got Gorbachev to allow the demolition of the Berlin Wall, which while not leading directly to the fall of the Soviet Union, did help thaw Cold War feelings. I think Reagan did a lot more than you want to give him credit for.

    • @epbski
      @epbski 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dr.TJ1 But a lot of that was based on the decisions of Gorbachev. He certainly could have refused to moderate. In fact, many former Soviets see him as a sell-out. Regardless, the Soviet Union isolated itself from the global economy for decades largely by choice. That is basically never going to work out in the long run. I think it's inaccurate to give Reagan the majority of the credit for the fall of the USSR. If the USSR had reformed and opened up their economy the way China did, maybe things could have been different for them. It's also an example of how China is nothing like the USSR even though some people suggest the West is in a new Cold War with China. That is completely inaccurate and a false analogy. China is not attempting to spread an economic or political ideology. And even if they were, no one would listen because no one is really interested in adopting the Chinese governmental and economic model. Other countries probably wouldn't be able to even if they wanted to. But China is integral to and depends on the global economy; they have no interest in upending it.

      I didn’t give Reagan the majority of credit, I said for the role he played. The role he played was not insignificant and was actually quite substantial. I remember seeing a documentary about the end of the Cold War and how Reagan and his staff were stunned at the concessions Gorbachev was willing to make at one of the summits and how they had to contain themselves in front of Gorbachev in order to not have him realize he had given up too much. Imagine being giddy at what the concessions meant but not being able to display it.
      I agree with you on China and one of the biggest reasons people say we’re in a new Cold War with China is because of Trump’s trade war and tariffs, which were largely a complete failure. China does have some unscrupulous practices such as theft of intellectual property and their dealings with Taiwan and we need to handle those carefully, but they don’t need to lead to a new Cold War.

    • @epbski
      @epbski 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dr.TJ1 Okay, I guess he played a role, but I believe the USSR would have collapsed inevitably even without Reagan because of their inability and/or unwillingness to reform their country and economy. And, by the very end, when they started to make some reforms, it was already too late. I guess what you're saying reinforces the view that Gorbachev was a hack politician and quite possibly a sell-out, as well.
